  • @MrsFreeman2010 , I LOVE Tucker! That was our top choice if this baby was a boy and now I'm a little sad that we won't be able to use it. Also, love Clara--it was on my short list for this girl!

  • @MrsFreeman2010 Love it! Also love not telling anyone. I know our families are curious about our choices, but we're not saying a word.

  • @MrsFreeman2010 I love Tucker and Clara as well!

I am really struggling with girl's names.  My favorite names are Elliott and Clare but H vetoed Elliott for a girl and doesn't love Clare.  We agree on Paige and Hailey but I am not crazy about Hailey and Paige doesn't work with either of our middle name choices (Jean and Darr, I don't like having a one-syllable first name with a one-syllable middle name).  I like Kenna but H doesn't think it is a real name (it may not be).  We also both kind of like Scarlett but don't love it.  Anyone have any ideas that are similar to these?  I'm starting to worry that we'll end up with a girl and she won't have a name for like the first week.
  • @RainyDays86 I'm biased, because I have a Paige but I love it! And she's Paige Leigh so I have no issues with single syllable first and middle. And to throw it even more off our last name is single syllable! Between your two middle names I'd go with Paige Jean.

I also like Hailey! But I have a Halle which is close but slightly different and less common. I don't see anything wrong with Hailey Jean or Hailey Darr.

Kenna is not my style. I tend to agree with your DH that it's a more of a nickname for McKenna.

  • Yall...I really can't decide between Hadley and Grace. DS is Wyatt. It would be Hadley Grace or Grace Patricia or Grace Lynn (both family names). We'd probably call her Gracie. Please tell me which you prefer! DH likes both so he's kind of leaving it up to me.
  • @RainyDays86 I love Scarlette Darr

@champhe I am a fan of Hadley Grace. A close friend just had a Hadley Mae and I think Hadley is just such a sweet name and Grace is always lovely.

  • @RainyDays86 - I am a huge fan of both Clare and Paige, but I understand the one syllable dilemma. Hailey and Scarlett are not my style, but are solid choices. Suggestions: Violet, Juliet, Charlotte, Hannah, and Hazel. Out of curiousity, is Darr a family name? I've never heard of it, and it's rather awesome for a middle.

@champhe  - Of the two, I'd definitely vote for Grace. I have a difficult time picture an adult, professional woman named Hadley. Grace is a beautiful name, which I think ages well.

  • Thanks for the input everyone! @kayemjay2 Darr is H'a grandmother's name. Her actual name was Dorothy but she went by Darr only her whole life. It's a little weird but I like it for a middle name.
  • @RainyDays86 That's super cute. My H's grandma was Dorothy, as well. She went by Dot, so that's on our potential middle name list
  • @champhe My vote would be for Grace Lynn. Just because if she does go by Gracie it doesn't flow as well with Patricia. Hadley Grace is a little more trendy but if you still love Grace/Gracie she could decide to use her middle name into adulthood as I know many adults who go by nn/mn in their professional lives.
  • We are the kind of people who keep the list of names private from friends and family and then finalize at birth. DD is Ariana Soleil. Our last name is really Hispanic so we're trying to keep the names easily pronounced in Spanish and English. The list for this LO so far is:

Violet - (I keep thinking of her as Violet but actually don't love the name)
Mila Wren - (DHs fav so far but I'll have to convince him on keeping MN)
Emilia - (too popular or weird sibling set)
Belle - (maybe more of a MN?)

  • @erinh2005: (Hi again, LOL.) I love Mila Wren! Violet would be my second choice. Belle as a MN, yes.
  • @erinh2005 I really like Mila Wren also! It has a nice flow with it.
  • @MrsFreeman2010 and @nda_roxybabe We made the mistake of telling our possible names to our families early on, and not everyone was super enthusiastic (fortunately they didn't say anything negative, but we could just tell). So we've decided not to reveal the "final" name until it's born--although I think they all know that we're going to do what we were going to do anyways, because that's how we roll! ;)

@erinh2005 I love Mila Wren as well! I also like Emilia and don't think it would be a weird sibling set, but I really like Mila.

@RainyDays86 I was trying to think of some names similar to Scarlett and came up with a couple that @kayemjay2 listed...I second her suggestions!

H and I have always liked Ivan for a boy, and it goes great with our last name. (The initials also give a great nickname that some of our friends have already taken to calling the baby, even though we don't know yet if it's a boy!) H is definitely set on Ivan and I'm on board. The only thing that bothers me is whether it will now be associated with Ivanka Trump. Would anyone else worry about this? Am I overthinking it (like I do everything else)?!
  • @erinh2005 - I think Violet is lovely (and underused!). Maybe the fact that you are already calling the baby that is  a *SIGN* :)
  • @erinh2005 what about Violet Belle?
  • @L1C4gal I am partial to initial NNs especially for boys and I agree that the connection with the trump is a bit of a stretch so I think you're good!
  • @SKZW and @erinh2005 Great points! Thanks for the input. I'm not sure if it would change our minds (H is really excited about the name and I'd hate to take that away), but always good to be prepared--hopefully for nothing, like you said!
  • Joseph John is the name we are going with. Joseph for my husband, his father, and his grandfather. John is for both of my grandfathers and my husband's other grandfather. My dad's middle name is John, too.

I love seeing the names that everyone is choosing!

  • @achays11 I somehow missed your suggestion until just now (bumping at the laundromat...alone - so basically on vacation!) but yes! I thought of that one I was just contemplating whether her name would be seen as a literal object "purple colored chiming object" or if I was overthinking it lol
  • I would definitely not think of it that way @erinh2005. I think it's a beautiful name.
  • Wow its like you copied my baby name list! Hubby isnt thrilled with any of them and gives me the dumbest suggestions. Its like he is trying to annoy me but swears he is serious.
  • So our final two we've come up with are either Kolt Thomas or Kaden Thomas. Our daughters name is Kennedy Madison... thoughts?!
  • Just discovered the worst baby names of all time: Frank Zappa's kids are named Moon Unit, Diva Muffin, Ahmet Emuukha, and Dweezil.

You can't make this sh*t up
  • Hi everyone,
I am looking for help with names. We haven't really given it much thought and because we're team green we need male and female names.

We would like a name that doesn't cause people to think up nicknames for it. In other words, we want a non-nickname-able name. Or at least one that doesn't have such obvious nicknames that people are always trying to inflict said nicknames on the kid. At the same time we don't want a name that is already a nickname of something else as the formal name (e.g. Kate -- a lot of people are given the name Kate, but people assume it's short for Katherine even when it is not. We would like to avoid names like Katherine, which people like to shorten to Kate/Catie without permission, as well as names like Kate.)

DS's name is like Katherine -- it is one of those that everyone just assumes should be shortened. Think Benjamin. Everyone will call your kid Ben, even if he wants to go by Benjamin.
DD's name is exactly what we're looking for. There isn't really a nickname for it even though it's three syllables. So people call her the correct name every time. It's also a bit unusual but still well-known -- not one you'd mistake as a made-up name. We'd love to think of another name like that.

Our front-runner girl name was Cassandra for a long time, and perhaps it still is, but when DH said this nickname thing I was like, "we totally can't do Cassandra" because she will definitely be called Cassie, Cass, or Sandra.

  • @kat81 DD has one of those names that could be a nickname, but isn't. No one has assumed is was short for anything. We also have friends that named their son a name that could be shortened and they just told everyone that they would not be using a nickname and only call him by his full name.

You can definitely use names the way that you want. You just have to be vocal about it.

I understand, but it has been a huge annoyance for DS who is special needs in the first place...so it's just one hassle I wish he didn't have, even though I REALLY love his name (the full version!) You can use it how you want but some names get forced into nicknamehood more so than others and there is only so much you can do. People will still do what they want to do, too. This is why we might still go with Cassandra, but I really do think that a name like Benjamin is one of those ones that people will just shorten for you as the default, whether you like it or not. I'm prepared to correct right and left when the kid is a baby but I don't know what my kid will be like and whether I want him/her to have to take on that burden, just like may people on here don't want their kid to have a name that gets mispronounced or misspelled right and left. Obviously it's not the biggest deal in the world, but I'm open to name ideas that people won't screw up. :)

  • We have family who insist on adding an e sound to the end of names ( Matt becomes Matty...Jenna becomes Jenny) which annoyed my MIL enough she didn't name her children anything that could be made that way (ex. Natasha...). We also did this with out daughter and now they call her by her middle name with an extra e- Rosie. Grrr. I have corrected over and over again (to no avail) especially because she is first named for the matriarch of the family.
  • @kat81 I understand, just giving personal experience. Hopefully you will find a name that works.
  • I get the nickname thing too. There are a couple of girl names I really like but I don't like their nicknames at all so we've vetoed them to avoid that risk. @kat81 I don't know how many of these will be your taste but in addition to ideas people have already given, I had the following non-nicknameable ideas: Emma, Emily, Nora, Hailey, Zoe, Scarlett, Erin, Margo, Avery. Hope that helps!

@hp_momma we've talked about this before but I LOVE Paige! It's a front runner for us for sure if this one is a girl.
