Baby Name Choices & Discussion!

Re: Baby Name Choices & Discussion!

  • To add on a couple names that are non-nn names. (They're not exactly all in style right now... but you never know!)
    Sarah
    Rachel
    Claire
    Emily (sorta...)
    Eve
    Laura/Lauren
Lilah (some might argue this is already kinda a nn)
    Ruby

    Luke
    Trevor
    Kyle
Andrew (definitely has nn potential but not so obvious that I think people would do it automatically)
    David
    Ezra
    Eli
    Scott
    Spencer

  • @ShadeofGreen816 My newphew is Andrew and my MIL insists on calling him Andy even though my BIL and SIL tell her over and over again that his name is Andrew. She respond with "but I like Andy better". Like it was her choice :expressionless:

MILs nicknames that she insists on is probably the top reason I choose to avoid names with nicknames!

  • For the non nickname thing... As a teacher I ask students what they prefer in the beginning of the year, I have found quite a few students prefer the non nickname. Jennifer, Michael, and Matthew, so I just go with what they want.

I personally want a name we can create into a nickname. I love Samantha-Sam, Addison-Addy..... I'm having the hardest time coming up with names... I never thought it would be this hard!!

I prefer not in style, or at least "timeless," like David. My nephew's name is William after a family member and it just happened to be very popular when he was born (maybe it still is.) But it is a timeless name. I prefer either obscure or timeless-popular (even if this is "boring"), not current-popular. Not because I'm so against being trendy, but I think I just don't like the current trends!

  • I posted in the Baby Name board also...but is anybody else getting frustrated about not agreeing on a name with DH? I know there is still time (12 week countdown!), but I am starting to obsess a little over names. I thought we had mostly decided on Griffin, but the more DH heard it the less he liked it. So once again we are back to discussing and not agreeing. The only names we have on our maybe list as of last night are:

    Henry Davis
    Lincoln Davis
    Finley (nn Finn) Davis

Henry is DH's top pick. I like it, but not sure that I love it. I tend to go towards names that aren't so "common" (didn't realize how popular Logan was until after he was born). And not sure that is sounds as good with Logan as Griffin did. What are opinions/thoughts on the above names?

    BFP #3  8/29/16, EDD 5/5/17, DS #2 5/11/17

  • We cannot agree. It upsets me. I have tried to bring up the subject and get no where. I can't figure out what his aversion to it is but it's hard to let it go. We probably have closer to 10 weeks left because of twins so I'm eager to get it figured out:/ ashhhh

If you have a rough delivery (which kind of everyone has in a way), then sometimes your DH caves on naming at the last minute. This happened to me and my mom once each....

  • @newmamaro Griffin was top of my list too, but H doesn't love it. Agreeing on names is so hard!
  • Oh gosh we haven't even started talking names yet  :s

    @kat81: sneaky  ;)
It actually wasn't on purpose in either case, really. But I had a normal delivery with #2, just with no pain meds or anything. And that shook DH! Plus I had lots of afterpains. There were two middle names that I liked that DH didn't like. We had already decided on a first name (but only for a girl--luckily that's what we had, we were team green!) Anyway, when we were finalizing the name after DD was born DH immediately was like, "I think the middle name should be X or Y" (the two middle names I had chosen previously.) And he is still totally cool with it today.

As for my mom, she wanted to give her 2nd daughter her maiden name as a middle name, which is feminine-sounding. My dad wanted to give her HIS middle name, a family name that is basically gender neutral. They couldn't agree. Well, once my mom had an emergency c-section and a really sucky L&D because of that, my dad immediately caved and said baby should have my mom's maiden name as the middle name. As the next and final kid, I ended up getting my dad's middle name.

I guess I'm just saying that if you don't finalize the name until birth, the scales might be tipped in your favor. But make sure you're prepared and clear-headed, though. I remember I had wanted one of the middle names mentioned above for DS, but was not in the right mind to really advocate for that. We went with something else and I was like, "wait!" the next day but it was basically too late. So...now that name might be #3's middle name, if I can convince DH (he still doesn't like it much). It is a family name on my side that is gender neutral.

actually neither have we other than my post above to ask for non-nickname-able suggestions. We basically have NO ideas.

  • @newmamaro My vote is for Finley! Its on my "just in case this LO turns out to be in the small percentage of misread ultrasounds" list. And I love nn Finn!
  • @newmamaro, I think those names all go well with Logan. Finn and Logan are really cute together.

  • @newmamaro - I also love Finn and Logan together. Sounds like a great pair of brothers :)

@caileajayden - That's a great name! Noah is a classic, just like Michael (creeping on your siggy)- can't go wrong with those.

@caileajayden: Good name! My only feedback is on the spelling. The extra Z is unnecessary... unless it's honoring how someone else spells it?
All of this. Love the name in general and if there's a specific reason then go for it. But I tend towards "less is more" with extra letters.
  • I agree, Noah Alexander is a great name. Just drop the extra Z. I would have loved to go with Noah, but DH didn't want to.

I also agree with this, but since it's the middle name, I care less about traditional spelling. If the extra Z makes you happy, go for it. If, however, you were using it as a first name, I definitely would've questioned the reasoning.

Agreed. We are using Alexander as a first name. I feel like the different spelling is forever going to have to be corrected. But as a middle name it is less likely going to be an issue.

  • We have decided on Alexander as the first name as well.

@Rebecca517 yay!!! It really is a strong awesome name. And I love Alex also!

  • We were firm on naming our little girl Eva, but now I'm questioning it because we're very close with my SIL and nephews (one of which is named Eli) who live in the same town. I've caught myself calling my nephew Evi a few times now- we see them 2-3x a week, otherwise I don't think it would be an issue. DH says the names aren't similar at all, but I'm thinking they might be.. especially since she's not even born yet and I'm already mixing up the names  Opinions? We also really love Lucy so we'll likely name her Lucy instead
  • @momma2char: That's a good question. I can see how there'd be a potential for mix-up, but I agree with your H, the "e-l" and "e-v" are different sounds. I think once you have that little baby, too, you'll be calling her Eva (or Evie) like 100x a day, and the name will become so settled in, and ingrained, you won't mistakenly call someone else by that name, you know what I mean? Eva is a great name, and so is Lucy; I like them both!
  • @momma2char, I agree with @SKZW! It might seem like the names are similar, but there is enough of a difference that I don't think it will bother you once baby is here! Lucy is also adorable.

  • I can't remember if I mentioned this before in this thread, but one name H and I both like for a boy is Rowen. Partly because we like the nature component and partly because it's not common. We're having a girl, so we won't be using it this time around. However, all of a sudden, I'm seeing Rowens pop up! I've never personally seen it spelled with an "e" before. I haven't known any Rowans, either, but have heard of it that way, commonly for girls. But in the past two months, I've seen two facebook announcements for new Rowens in my general location. I wonder if that name is becoming more popular.
  • @starphish18: I've seen that name a lot in my online travels on baby name sites, definitely. It's a great name! Relatedly, a name on my own short list right now is Ronan, for a boy, which means little seal---so sweet!
  • Quick Question: If you're considering a name that happens to be a street name near where your parents live, is that a deal-breaker for you? Would it be automatically off your list, or still a possible? Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't factor that into my decision at all unless it's something REALLY uncommon and you live essentially ON that street. Just know that when they're a teenager, they'll PROBABLY steal it ;)
  • @SKZW That wouldn't bother me at all. In fact, if they still live there when the baby is a little older, I think the kid would love it! It'd be like "their" street.
  • @SKZW that wouldn't bother me at all. I doubt that anyone with make the connection unless you say something or if it's uncommon.
  • @skzw lol! Too funny! I don't think that will warrant much regret imo!

I'm wondering what people's opinions are regarding sibling names (opposite genders) that start the same. For example, Lucy/Liam, Maren/Max, Brianna/Braden, etc. I've never pictured myself doing this with my children's names, but the name I like the most for this little one starts the same as DDs. I know it's ultimately a personal choice, just looking for other's opinions. DH doesn't seem to think it's an issue at all. Thanks in advance!

ETA: Sorry if this has been discussed before!
  • @Icarriedawatermelon, personally it wouldn't really bother me and we even toyed with the idea of a same letter name for this baby. The question for me would be, if you have more kids, would you be okay having all of their names start with the same letter? If two had the same letter, than I would have to have them all have the same letter. That's just my weird brain though.

My weird brain is also saying that if this LO is a boy, he will have the same middle initial as DD and therefore if we have a third baby their middle initial would have to be the same.
