Thanks everyone! I'll have to think more. @nktrodden826 we're in LA - so probably demographically similar! Maybe he'll just have to get used to just correcting everyone. Or DH and I will start over. Oy.
@caribbeanmama I like Jillian, too. If not for the family's situ, it would have been on my girl's name list.
If it's a boy, it'll be Dylan. My H loves this name and as long as I can pick the middle name (top of my list is Gregory after my uncle), I'm ok with it.
I'm fairly positive that it'll be Catherine Carol if it's a girl. Both of our mom's are named Kathy (short for Katherine/Kathryn) and my maternal grandma an my H's paternal grandma are both named a variation of Carol. Her nickname would be either Katie or Cece.
Yeah...we have no boy name. This pretty much solidifies the fact that I'm probably having a boy. We've thrown around the names Pierce and Dylan, but they just don't seem right. I really love the name Micah, but DH is all "It's a girl's name or a boy named Mike from the Netherlands." Ummm...it's a biblical name. DH wants to name a boy William, but that's his name and I don't want two in the house. Plus, it's become super popular. I would LOVE to name a boy Benjamin Claude after his grandfathers, but DH is worried that it would be weird since his half-brother is a Benjamin and the half-brother's son is a Benjamin.
Making lists of boy names is excruciating in our house.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment. Sorry! I'm named after my grandmother whom I've never met. She passed away before I was born. I've never liked it. I wish my parents had given me my own name and not the identity of someone else. Naming a child to help remember someone else is a lot to put on a kid. I completely understand this may be a UO, but these are just my thoughts as someone named after a passed relative.
I can see your point. I don't agree with it, but I respect it.
Personally, I don't understand this fascination with making people yoonik through names. It's how dreadful names like Jaxson and Nevaeh came about (sorrynotsorry). We are all part of a collective. Family is the most important life value to me and, well, my family. I am not saying the sentiment to distinguish an individual is wrong - I just personally don't agree with doing it through a name. It's a very New World concept, and also part of cultures that don't share such long histories or traditions. My kids are part of a family and a history and traditions that are bigger than them - and that includes (Jewish) naming traditions. For me, personally, that's always been a comforting thing.
I will say that my parents never told me much about the great-grandmother who I'm named after, so I don't feel a personal connection to her, specifically. Rather just more of a family connection - which is fine with me, but DH and I vowed that we would make sure our kids know why we chose their names, and the personalities of the people behind them. (And yes, our kids will still be their own individuals.)

Ouch! This comes across as implying that those cultures are somehow inferior by utilizing the naming process as a means of carving out an identity. Especially given the larger historical context of having names imposed, it can be quite empowering to create through naming. There is actually an interesting sociological and anthropological basis for this. I'm not saying that I love Jaxson and the like, just thought it was a little harsh...

Feels like UO is starting early lol
Oh, I didn't mean it that way at all. I'm really sorry it came off that way. It was more an observation than a value statement. For example (just one random example), my understanding is Mormons get very creative with names. That itself is part of their culture and tradition - which is super cool! It's just not mine.
Thanks for calling me out - totally not my intention, I apologize.
A name shouldn't be given or used to define a persons personailty or identity, naming a child after a family member or important person is a beautiful way in my opinion to honor and give special meaning but I don't see how it could define a person - sharing stories with your child about their namesake should make them feel proud or even special to have the name but I don't see many parents pressuring their child to be like that person/defined by it: "little Earl your grandpa Earl wouldn't have done that', or 'you should be a police officer like him' or 'which Earl are you again?"
I will say I can see how someone who recently passed could be hard for some families but I can also see it be healing and honestly by the time the child is cognizant of their name and the history everyone would have time to adjust and your child will have taken the moniker for their own. I personally love seeing a beloved name take on a new life of its own.
Unique, traditional, personally significant, our names only have the power to define us if we let them - I see that excuse as a crutch.

Hey! Thanks for clarifying. I'm sorry I read too much into your observation. I do think it's awesome to be part of a family with deep-rooted history and traditions. Your post actually reminded me that my husband has an extensive family tree on his mother's side that they traced for several generations (she's Polish). I'm curious to see the names now just because (!).
@virginiaunicorn11 I'm LDS (Mormon) and haven't come across any families with creative names. It's definitely not part of our traditions or culture. Maybe it's just our area but most names are family names i.e. Jacob, John, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, etc. I will say though that working at a Navajo school, some of the names get pretty interesting especially when they are actually English names and not Navajo for example I have a LibertyBelle

@virginiaunicorn11 and @caribbeanmama thank you for those two perspectives, they were both really enlightening and I can see from both how naming practices as a function is empowering on both sides given historical context and actually work against the specific forms of oppression imposed on a group of people. Intersectionality!
@cssme13 that's interesting re names like libertybelle I live in an area of LA with a big Filipino (and Latino) community and know a Liberty and an Ivybelle. Libertybelle would not surprise me here!
We know we are having a little girl...........First name is pretty much decided but it's the middle name we are debating now.

I like all 3 so I keep flip-flopping. Hubby is a fan of Wren, I think it's just me not wanting to make it permanent yet since we still have quite a ways to go. (BTW, I'm a traditional southern girl and half the reason I'm a fan of all of these is because her monogram will be cute- I've always loved monograms and mine is awful so I want hers to look good- crazy I know!!)

@Mrymntgrl Maeve is the second on my list for girl first names, so I'm partial to that one. I'm from NY, so the monogram thing isn't that important, I guess...question, though. Why does it matter? Not being rude - genuinely curious. I didn't know that was really a thing until you mentioned it. The only time I've seen them used by me is for weddings.

Giiiiiiirrrrrl. Monograms are a southern girls life. I'm pretty sure everything DD has, has a mono on it. And I pretty much love that we have the same monogram.
@Mrymntgrl@MrsLa3 Add me to the monogram all the things train! It's the main reason I want to decide on a name asap! I actually do my own monogramming (I do vinyl and embroidery) so it's KILLING me to not be able to start (uhhh... yes, I'm only 14w tomorrow, it's a problem, I know). I honestly don't think I could go with a name that doesn't have a "good" looking monogram. My son has a lot of personalized things but I know that everything this poor girl has will have her initials on it. I guess it's only in true Georgia fashion that I do it...
@virginiaunicorn11 some just look better than others. Like mine since I got married has my last name J in the middle of course and then another J is the start of my first name and my maiden name starts with a C. So its JJC when in the monogram. It looks ok in some scripts, but definitely not others. It definitely is a bigger trend in the South- I know some girls that have EVERYTHING monogrammed- clothes, diaper covers, bags, tshirts, cups- if it can be embroidered or have a decal added, they have a monogram. I just want a few choice things, but I definitely think it's cute. If you go on Etsy and put in monogram as your search you will see the wide variety LOL

@jsweet I just looked it up but it actually depends on the size of the lettering if the last goes in the middle or the end, if all the letters are the same size then you actually do first middle last. If you have the two outside letters smaller with the larger middle letter, than you do first last then middle/maiden name.

Thanks, this is so interesting. So when you're thinking of initials, are you also considering the visual depiction of a monogram? I think about initials, but it's more audial - or making sure they don't spell anything awful.
I've had my girl name picked out since I was 14 or 15 years old. Aurora Lynn (nn Rory) for a boy I love Jack. But DH is leaning toward Duke. DS is Dean Thomas ... so Dean and Duke would be cute
I don't think I've ever had anything monogrammed in my life! Actually, now that I think about it, I've never had my name put on anything except for a 31 bag with our last name as a wedding gift. I feel a little neglected!
So today, I discovered that one of my great-great-great grandmothers was Felicity Elizabeth. Felicity was an old favorite of mine when I was pregnant with my second, but her father wasn't sold on it. I think to avoid any 'Ana' confusion, since my little girl is Lilliana Joy, I think I'll be going with Felicity Elizabeth Marie.
@mamaof2hopefully - I love Dean. That is the middle name of this little one if it is a boy. We have a tradition in my family of picking out a first name that we like/is their own and a middle name that is in honor of someone we love. My grandpa passed away last year and his middle name was Dean so that will be the middle name if we have a boy and I am almost tempted to break tradition and make it a first name but my DH is set on the first name we agreed on.
We are having twin Boys and we are not sure right now the conversation goes between Declan and Liam and William and James. We have 2 other kids, DD Elodie Colette and Step son Shane.
So I want to bounce this name to see what comes to mind when it is read! Let me first say, I (and my extended family) love uncommon names that have a certain ring to them but aren't so so so weird that people just stare lol. My DS is Langley Evan (unique 1st name and semi-normal middle name if he prefers it). People usually say 'what is it? As in 'did I hear that right' and after I repeat it, they like it.
Our NIPT says girl so...we are loving the name Ireigh [eye-reigh] no middle name discussion yet..but ???
I'm not looking for approval, just 1st and 2nd impressions! Thanks guys! And if you think you have the perfect middle name, I would love to know it

@BKinney0506 I am not sure yet what my thoughts are on the name because I'm still not 100% on pronunciation. Does "reigh" rhyme with "neigh"? Or is it like Irene without the final consonant? Or something else?
My feeling on names/spelling in general is that different can be fun-- like Langley as a first name. If I look at it I can pronounce it and if you say it I can guess how it's spelled. You may have an awesome sounding name in Ireigh (I'm not sure yet!) but the spelling/pronunciation issues are big ones for me.
@mamadcb it is Ireigh like Irene without the n. We chose that spelling because we don't like how Irie or Eyrie or Ayrie looks. Also went with that spelling because a lot of girls we know have the spelling, Ashleigh (ashley), Kayleigh (kaylie), Leigh (lee). And thank you for the congrats! I am so excited

I'm not supertraditionalist when it comes to names, but Ireigh is in the "stare" category for me, personally. It's nowhere close to Langley, which is uncommon but familiar and pronounce-able.
But hey, it's Murica, and you do what you want! Congrats on the baby girl, that's super exciting!
