Re: All Things Breastfeeding

  • @desoky01 gotcha well for me I have one side that maybe gets 3oz and that's after not pumping:feeding for hours so 2oz from one isn't out of the ordinary for me especially if in middle of day or night. I think it's actually average

  • Does anyone else's kid randomly act like he forgot how to nurse? I'm about to lose my shit, as he is sitting here screaming but every time I put him to the breast he just keeps crying and acts like he can't find it. He only does this once a week-ish but it drives me up a wall. He hasn't eaten since 2 so I know it's not that I have nothing for him and now he is starting to fall back asleep because he wore himself out from screaming. I've changed him, walked around with him, burped him. I give up.
  • @leighry could it be gas? This is what mine does if he's really uncomfortable while nursing. Maybe try burping him to see if that helps
  • @leighry my LO did this last week a lot and has occasionally this week as well. When I walk around with him I keep him to the breast and then he latches. It's almost like she's super hungry and then gets frustrated but when I'm waking around it kind of distracts him. Good luck!

  • @leighry LO sometimes does this too, but it usually means she's tired but not quite able to go to sleep on her own. I can usually snap her out of it if I swaddle her and shake her bottom a bit until she finally relaxes. These little crazies are so not in control of their bodies and it's often frustrating for them - which is frustrating for us!

  • I think my D does it as well when she gets so tired as well, if she couldnot sleep for long time. i sometimes just let her sleep little bit and she can nurse better when she wakes up.
  • @erniebernie1 I do think he is a gassy baby in general (the farts this kid rips are unbelievable), so that's why my go to was walking around and trying to "bounce" the gas out..

Otherwise I feel like these episodes only happen at like 2am so I don't know. Maybe it's any combo of gas/tired/hungry and he just can't handle it. Thanks for the input ladies  :)
  • LO is at 8 weeks and has now been nursing in excess for almost 2 weeks. Are any of you who had the same crazy feeding still going at the same pace? I fear when he slows down that my boobs might explode.

  • @SandNStarsNJ I found (and find during growth spurts) that they slow down almost gradually giving your boobs time to adjust to the new demand!
Only issue I have is when he spends nights cluster feeding the one time he decides to sleep through the night I wake up so super full I have to pump one boob while feeding from the other. But it's not that bad because I pump once in the morning about 3-5 oz from one boob and help build a stash or allow for a daddy feeding that evening!
  • We had a weight check on Monday and goal weight was 10lbs. For the first time ever, she met (and exceeded) her goal weight! She weighed 10lbs 1.5oz, which means she also finally passed her birth weight. Such a relief and now hopefully we can keep it up. I was looking at her visit summaries online and it's so hard to believe, but she went from being in the 99% for weight at birth to the 26% at Monday's weight check. Her two month appointment is this upcoming Monday, so hopefully she has continued to gain well.

On another note, I started back to work and have been getting about 6oz total from two pumps at work. Not as much as I was hoping for or would like.
  • My LO is 9 weeks and for the past few days while nursing he eats and is then pulling away like he's done, multiple times each feeding. But if I put my boobs away he freaks out, like he's not finished eating. He's just super wiggly! Anyone else experiencing the same thing?
  • @LauraJosh11 my D is 8 weeks and she does it as well. she turns her head the other way but she is also lookıng for more . i cannot decide if she s really finished or what.
we introduced her bottle dor the first time fee daysago and i dont know if that could be the problem ?
I have two questions ladies: How long do your babies last between two feedings at nights ? ( for exlusively BF babies) DD used to wake up after 4 hours max and then she had few nights she went for 5 hours. last two nights , i wake up and realize that she had not nursed for almost 7 hours, i worried and woke her up. H thinks that i should let her sleep but i m afraid if something is not right. she goes back to sleep easily after nursing.
second question : her poop was normally mustard color but last few days the color is between green and mustard. First i thought it s the green leafs i had those two days but i had not eaten green much yesterday and it s still green today. have you experienced that? should i contact her dr ?
  • @laurajosh11 I sometimes have the same experience, especially if there is either something else going on that he wants to see or is startled by or is gassy and needs to burp/fart but wants to eat as well.

@Zoefer After those first few weeks your LO should wake when hungry (it's when they are newborns that you need to wake them because they will choose sleep). And the time between feeds at night should lengthen, so go with it. Personally, my DS goes a max of 3 hours but at this point he's just plain huge and probably needs to drop a feeding at night. To the poop question, green is still good and your LO is going to process what you ate slower so it would make sense that 2 days post leafy greens your LO has green poo. If it's solid, bloody, black, etc then you need to worry.

  • @ZoeFer you're doing everything right! It's normal for baby to start sleeping for lengthier times during the night. Nothing is wrong with baby! Their brains need rest too when going through growth spurts, so sometimes you'll notice them sleeping longer periods during one as well.  In regards to green poo, my son started having that too after a lengthy growth spurt. When I did my research they said it is perfectly healthy, it just has to do with the amount of hindmilk and foremilk they're getting that may change the color of baby's stool. With the growth spurts they get a lot of both. As long as baby is still having wet diapers and doesn't strain when pooing, she's doing just fine

  • So I haven't started pumping yet and I'm feeling super guilty. Every time I think I'll start I don't. And I worry that I'll be taking away milk from DS if I do pump since I feel he uses everything I have most days. Sigh... at least I have until mid April to start a stash but that will go by fast. Just venting really. I need to motivate myself if I want to have anything in reserve for going back to work.

I was was thinking of pumping at night after I put him down since that is typically his longest stretch of sleep. Only problem is I'm still dealing with DD at that point too but maybe I can read to her while I pump or something if it doesn't freak her out.

is it bad that I sometimes envy formula feeding moms because they have an endless supply and won't have to deal with transition to a bottle? I know breast milk is amazing and it's why I stick it out but I'm still a little jealous sometimes.
  • No, @rspalding001 I feel the same way too sometimes. I made the decision to breastfeed because I can and I felt it was best for M. But honestly if my milk suddenly dried up and I couldn't do it anymore I would not be sad about it. I know a lot of women who really love it but I am not one of them.
  • @rspalding001 I think that in the middle of the night after I feed him (pumped bottle) and then go to pump so the whole routine takes a while. I think gosh if I was just doing formula I could go right back to sleep. But then I think of the cost of
formula and I suck it up at least until I'm back to work then not sure what will happen since I don't think I will pump well at work.
  • When feeding and massaging the breast I often feel what I think are ducts with milk. I try to massage them since I think I had one clog before. They don't hurt (just the one time a week or two ago) but I can feel and move them. Should this always be the case or is it a precursor to a clog if I don't keep working on it?
  • @rspalding001 I started out at about 3-4 weeks just pumping once a day (like 10-15 minutes) first thing in the morning. V is usually still a bit drowsy after his first feed of the day (don't count motn feedings) so I would nurse him, put him back in his bassinet and pump while he slowly woke back up. I kept the milk in the fridge for a couple days in case I needed to leave V with anyone for a short time then freeze it. Basically I kept 2 pumps worth fresh and rotated the rest into the freezer as I pumped more. I slowed down pumping when I had over 50oz in the freezer.

I'm on my 3rd day back at work and I've had to use a little of the frozen to make sure I covered the first few days but I think I will be able to pump close to enough if not more at work for the next work day. I plan on freezing any extra from what I leave at home each day and if I don't have enough for the next day I will thaw some out so that I rotate my stash. I haven't decided if I'm going to pump at all on my days off or not. I'm off tomorrow so we'll see how I feel about it in the morning. Lol!
  • How do you rotate in frozen BM? DO you rotate it in so it isn't there too long since BM changes over time or would you just wait to use the frozen until you stop nursing or pumping?
  • @rspalding001 You are describing my exact predicament. If one baby isn't needing me, the other is. And once they're down, lunches are made, things are cleaned up, etc, the choices are: shower, sleep, or pump. And LO is nursing every 90-120 minutes so guess what I'm least inclined to pick??

@kvruns I never rotated frozen in but rather used it when I didn't have fresh or refrigerated milk available. Suggestion on that btw - make sure you date and record the ounces on the container for reference later on.

Has anyone used a sling for breastfeeding? I use a wrap for carrying M around in right now but I was watching some videos on nursing in the sling and it looks so much easier. I'm thinking this might be a helpful tool when nursing at a restaurant so I can have a hand free. Right now nursing using a cover occupies both hands.

I've used it more as a support for baby's body while I'm walking around. I'm still supporting her head with my one arm, but at least i have one hand free.

Once LO has decent neck control as they eat vertically in mine (Boba), but yes. Though I always kept motions slow. Haven't don't it with this guy yet because he loves his side.

  • I finally developed a good relationship with my pump and was getting some good output and now it's been crap lately. The only change is I've been pumping less so maybe it isn't responding as well. Totally stinks that these past couple days I've gotten half of usual during middle of night/morning pumping :( especialy tonight I'm no where near empty but nothing is coming. Boo
  • @kvruns You need to try a different pump. I've read that sometimes it has nothing to do with how much milk you have or don't have and everything to do with how your body responds to that particular pump.
  • ZoeFer said:
my daughter started to feed only around 5 min per breast, and sometimes she only takes one breast and doesnot look for more. it made me very nervous but when i talked to a LC , she thought it might be just enough her. she is gaining weight well enough and she s pooping peeing a lot. So i try not to worry. she swallows so fast for about 4-5 minutes and then she sometimes get so frustrated if she needs to suck more then 2 times per swallow. i realized that she might continue to nurse for another 5min or so slowly only if she s very hungry at night. I really dont know if this is normal at all
My DD does this too. She used to nurse longer and take both sides, but I guess she has gotten efficient and maybe my letdown is fast. Glad I am not the only one! I hear about all these babies nursing for 15-20 min each side and wondered if she was getting enough! She seems content and is growing, so I'll try to stop worrying.

  • A few questions :s
    1. STMs, how much do you build up your freezer stashes? I've got a pretty big stash already (i think), and go back to work March 20.
    2. Does anyone have experience donating milk?
  • I have a huge freezer stash. My free pump is dying, seems low in power, and I thought my milk was drying up. I also experienced a plugged duct. I started going through my stash because it's good for 2-3 months so those early ones need to be used. I pulled out my old pump from my first kiddo and I'm pumping back to normal amounts. I'd hate for all the milk to go to waste so I may donate some. The news just did a report on donating milk and it seems very easy to do.
  • @camcbeth according to Kelly Mom it is good in the freezer for 6 months :) nice job getting your stash up! I'm jealous!
    Babysizer Cravings Pregnancy Tracker
  • @anne11716 That's awesome if they last 6 months! I don't remember where I read it from where it lasts 2-3 months. Online probably.

On on a funny note, my husband is super weird and prefers not to touch it. We've been together since high school and yet he is "grossed" out by all the milk bags. He won't even test it when it's heated. I filled a freezer drawer full and a door pocket. I focused this time on pumping and saving because with my first kid I dried up at 3 months. But I was also back to work and feeding half formula and part of it was the birth control. I noticed I slowed way down after I got mine again.
  • I go back to work tomorrow and Evelyn still hasn't taken a bottle...my poor husband! I'm a nervous wreck and have been crying all day! I've even done this before but It's still so hard and it seems too soon. OMG, and 14 hours?!?!! I pray she eats!!

  • Thinking of you @MrsBigTime!

I crried yesterday because LO has been eating every 1.5-2 hours again during the day and just be going through a growth spurt. I have a week and a half left until I go back to work and I'm soooooo worried about him going to daycare even though the lady is so wonderful and she has a max of 5 kids. I stress out with one how is she going to do 5 exotically if he's eating as much as he is?!! Ah

  •  So here's my daycare question for breast-fed bottles: My DD  was easy and took 3 5 ounce bottles a day at daycare.  But this LO doesn't seem to be willing to go that far in between feedings. Exactly how many bottles are those of you who are returning to work already sending and how many ounces each to accommodate how frequently  they're eating?

I left my first 3 3 oz bottles, he ate every 3 hours. But that's exactly how much I pumped so I couldn't leave more. What if you left 3 is bottles and some smaller ones, like 1 or 2 oz as a top off if he needs it . I think the rule of thumb is 1-1.5 oz per hour
  • Tried pumping for the first time yesterday. I only did it after he'd nursed and pumped from the side he nursed from... three different times pumping got me 1 ounce total for the whole day LOL. So sad
  • @MrsBigTime how did the first day go?
  • *hugs* to you @rspalding001. That is so frustrating.
