  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I love that movie! Like, way too much. I'm a sucker for ridiculous 80's movies and that and Girly Just Wanna Have Fun are both favorites.

  • Yea, I enjoy going to any sort of Dr. I especially like when I'm a new patient and get to fill out paperwork (preferably ahead of time). I've never minded. Even the yearly gyn or dentist or shots.

  • @RainyDays86 I am with you on the hospital thing. My husband is a doctor and his hospital is like a weird second home and extended family. Especially during residency when he was there 90+ hours a week, I spent soooooo much time there!

@nda_roxybabe - I agree that Kohl's has some very bad "original" pricing. Some time ago I looked up their diamond rings and a ring of worse quality than mine had an original price that was about twice as much as mine which was bought from a jeweler and certified, not from some random store. Savings are not quite as much as they pretend.

With that said, I've paid some ridiculously low prices for a lot of things. I remember last summer walking out with 13 pieces of summer clothes for the kids plus like 5 pairs of kids' socks for $22 bucks. I don't even think I could do that at the consignment store. So of course I had to go back later that day and do it again.
Second this. I also hate Kohl's and think their original prices are ridiculous...BUT when they have clearance with codes you can stack on top? Their pricing is basically unbeatable. Last week, I got 15 short sleeve onesies, 5 top/legging set combos, 1 long sleeve/long bottom one piece outfit, and 5 rompers for $75 shipped. All super cute stuff.

@kat81 , add me to the baby hating train. I just don't like them. They are so fragile, boring, and needy! I'd take my 2 year old over a baby any day. And he drives me crazy, lol. Obviously, I knew what I was getting into by getting pregnant again, but when I think about what's to come...I just get a little sad at how my life is about to change again. And, to be truthful, I don't get all the fanfare over babies. The "ohhhh...so cute!", etc, etc. I've long worked in offices that are primarily female and the way that all work stops dead in it's tracks when a baby arrives to visit has always annoyed and confused me.

I don't really have my own UO today...I thought of a good one in the car this morning and then got to work and totally forgot it. Baby brain, man.

  • @Kipperoo I think that babies are cute but only after a certain age. They are very weird looking when they are newborns. I think people at work will be excited to meet my baby, which is a nice environment to be in as a mother, but I agree about it halting work too much. Because of the timing of everything, they probably won't meet this one until the fall at some point, at the earliest, unless people happen to be in on random days that I come in over the summer. (I work at a University, so people are in only sporadically in the summer.)

  • Don't have a UO but wanted to add that I love getting my teeth cleaned and agree that babies in their early stages are scary. Though I'm just awkward with babies in general.

  • Hate hate hate the dentist. And it's not like I've had awful procedures done that would make me never want to go back, (FFFC maybe?) I've never had a cavity. I just hate the scraping/cleaning of the teeth.
@CherryBananas why do the dental assistants and dentists feel the need to try to have a conversation with me while they have tools in my mouth!? I mean come on. Let's get this over with as quickly as possible!

  • I live in the northeast. It's just after 5pm and it's pitch dark out now.

MA is considering ditching the time change. That will be interesting if they do it.

Someone asked aboutbsome states being split between two time zones, I know the Florida Panhandle (or at least part of it) is an hour behind the rest of FL.

@RedInLove: That's what got this convo going! I saw that Beacon Hill was considering it. But I think that discussion happens every so often, with zero change for an outcome. Here's hoping!
  • I guess my UO is that I don't care one way or the other about DST. DD has always been a bear to put to bed, so it's never made anything better or worse.

+1 on not loving the dentist. I went in right before I found out I was pregnant and scheduled a follow up. I cancelled it because I decided I would wait til after baby (illogical, I know...I'm making excuses).

Not sure if this is a UO, but I am utterly baffled that anyone would want someone in the delivery room other than their partner. That includes moms, mother in laws, sisters, children(!), photographers... it's complete insanity to me that someone would want people there OR that anyone would assume someone would want that.
I agree. I don't want anyone else in there unless, for some reason, my husband couldn't be. In that case, I might have my brother or mom stand by me. Definitely no pictures, and my husband is under strict rules to stay above my waist.
  • I was in my sister's delivery of her second child and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. It was so much different being at her delivery vs the others I have been to.  I don't have a problem having my mom or sister in the room with me in addition to my husband, but I can also see how others might want it to be a private moment.
  • @KMD1106  and anyone else that hates the dentist- I really hate the dentist, but you should really consider having another cleaning while your pregnant. Pregnancy can cause havoc on your teeth and gums! Some dental plans will even cover an additional visit while your pregnant (3 in the year instead of just 2). Again, I don't usually advocate for the dentist (as he is by far not my favorite person to visit) but the dentist is super important while pregnant! And gingivitis can actually cause pre-term labor, pre-eclampsia, or low-birth weight!

  • The only people in the delivery room with me are DH and my mom. And my mom stays up at my head. My MIL threw a hissy fit about not being in the room but come on, I barely like the lady does she really think I want her in there seeing my legs wide open?! When I was getting ready to push with DD1 she tried to barge her way in the room "because she had a snack for DH". Thank goodness for my amazing nurse who about chewed her head off that DH was the least priority right now and he could wait for a snack and maybe MIL should come back with a snack for her DIL too since she's the one pushing the baby out!

When I had DD2 we were letting her come down the birth canal on her own before I started pushing but my legs were already up in the stirrups. Apparently my OB thought it was so cool that her head kept turning around in the canal and you could see her basically doing a 360 turn over and over. He felt he should tell all the nurses that walked by to "come look at this!"

My UO which I thought of this morning at my MFM appointment, is that I don't mind/maybe even like hospitals.  My dad was a doctor so growing up my only exposure to hospitals was visiting him at work which was fun.  And while I don't get excited per se about going into hospitals now as an adult I don't have any anxiety or fear about them and I would describe my overall view toward hospitals as favorable.  I don't think I've ever met anyone else who feels the same way.

I don't hate the hospital, but I don't love it either. I'm more neutral toward it. It's like hating, I dunno, paying the bill for an awesome, delicious dinner. That's a bad metaphor, but hospitals are there to HELP, ya know? That they're kind of depressing is just the necessary evil part of it.

I'm pretty sure that was the worst argument for anything ever, but I can't figure out a better way to articulate it.

+1 to no more DST. People have said they don't mind it, but has anyone said they don't want to get rid of it for any real reasons? Why do we still haaaaave it???

  • We really went back and forth about who to have present for the delivery. Looking back, I'm glad we had the extra support and were able to share such a special moment with my mom and sister. Plus, my husband ended up nearly passing out {I wasn't impressed at the time} so having backup to help coach me was great.

This time around I am actually considering a photographer. I'm not one who would share the photos on social media or anything, but I would love to have quality documentation of such a special day and experience. The birth photos I've seen bring me to tears every time- I love all the emotion they capture!
  • I'm definitely having my mother and husband in the room with me. Hubby doesn't want to be south of my belly button, but if my mom wanted to sneak a peek as the baby comes out, I'm sure I won't mind. She's a nurse and has seen it all plus it's her grandchild, so we'll see that day.
  • I overheard a pregnant lady on the phone inviting her MiL to be in the delivery room in Target the other day. It was so awkward. Also, I never understand how dads (or anyone) manage to stay right by mom's head and not see anything. When you're knees are by your ears, it seems impossible.

I'm sure my mom saw some, and I remember with DD1 my DH had the "I'm staying by your head" thought but he said during the moment that it's so amazing that went right out the window. But then again he also has a medical background so he isn't squeamish or anything.

  • My sister asked me to be in the room when she had her first kid, along with her baby daddy and his mom. It was amazing to see my niece being born, so I asked her to be with me when I delivered DD. Then I had a c section instead, so she missed out.

My sister also had a ton of people waiting around in her room while she slowly dialated. Like 8 or 9 people. Wtf?  DH and I explicitly told people nobody was coming to the hospital until after the baby was born and we called to say we were ready for visitors.

  • Oh and my OU: I don't think that mom using  pot for her morning sickness is not the worst person in the world. I wouldn't do it, but I can kinda get the trusting a plant more than big pharma (I'm thinking of all the birth defects caused by zofran, prescribed by doctors...)

    SITB:

Lots of reasons! The biggest one - a lot of patients (especially ones with dental anxiety) find it easier to relax if they aren't feeling ignored. We also spend all day talking to each other and it kinda feels weird having a conversation over someone's head and not try and include them. I swear it's not making us work any slower!!!

We have a lot of patients who have been seeing us for years and years that genuinely like catching up with us when they come in, but we are pretty good at judging who wants to chat and who wants to just get down to business. If a patient comes in and immediately asks for the headphones for the TV, they probably don't want to socialize.

Liking this for the awesome gif, but personally I was happy to have my parents in the delivery room for #1. Because we arrived at the hospital at the last minute and didn't have our paperwork, they actually weren't allowed in until I got my epidural and everyone could understand and trust my wishes to have them there. So they were there for pushing. It worked out great because my dad (who is actually a doctor--different kind, though--and has delivered lots of babies) was the most useful person during the pushing phase--way better than the actual medical personnel in there or DH, as this was our first and DH didn't know what was going on. My mom said that getting to see a delivery--especially this one as it was her grandson--was one of the best moments of her entire life. She remarked that she had delivered 3 babies herself but had never gotten to experience a live birth from the other end. She has thanked me profusely many times for giving her that experience.

For #2, we lived far away from everyone so there was no doubt it would just be me and DH. And DH was a rockstar this time (and I was unmedicated, so it mattered!)

This time we live near my in-laws, and I want to give them that option if they want it...but I might be just as happy to do it without them, as it was great with just me and DH last time (this time will be unmedicated as well because we're at a birth center.)

Oh! I have a UO that's sort of along these lines. I really do not care if I crap on the table in childbirth. I think I might have during DD's, but I didn't ask because I don't care. I mean, why care?? You're in pain and possibly working harder physically than you have in your life; blood, fluids, and a baby are coming out of you; it's, like, part of the process... WHO. CARES.
YEEESSSSSSS!!!! It's so weird to me that this is people's #1 fear. I wish I could "love" this many times.
FWIW I also have no idea as to whether I crapped either time. I kind of think I didn't, but it doesn't matter!!
