I've been lurking this thread for a while, but I just wanted to chime in and say that I had a midwife at my preterm delivery without any complications. Even with my water breaking early and not knowing how labor and delivery would go, I had complete faith in my midwife and everything went smooth in terms of delivery. Had I had an OB on call that day, I'm afraid they would have pushed for a c-section (which I did not want!) but the midwife understood my wants given my situation and I was able to have (for the most part) the labor and delivery I wanted!

ETA: I just remembered that there was an OB on call the day I delivered, but there was no need for him to come to my birth, especially since we had the whole NICU crew in the room ready to go in case DD needed anything immediately.

  • The wording was wrong. Not knocking anyone choosing to go with midwives, to each their own.

Personally I have a preference for someone that can operate, trained to deal with the very extreme cases, have gone to at least 8 years of post bachelor education at top medical schools. I happen to have a group of very unfortunate friends. A close friend of mine almost didn't survive childbirth. Her organs started failing, her platelets level dropped too low for birth and needed a transfusion, she had no complication throughout her pregnancy. 3 other friends that went with midwives ended up transferred to the on call OBs for emergency C sections while in labor due to fevers, baby heart rate dropping and failure to progress.
  • @AliceAlice I also chose a midwife that practices at a major hospital in my area with a nicu so if anything complicated was to happen the OB is there.  That said, obviously midwives aren't giving c-sections but the rates of c-section and induction are absolutely higher with OBs and that's not just having to do with complicated pregnancies.   It may not apply to all OBs but there are certainly OBs that push c-sections after a certain amount of time to speed things along.  The hospital I go to also measures c-section rates for complications with patients that had to be transferred from midwife to OB care and the stats show that the midwives let you labor longer than the OBs thus lower rates of c-section (again, this is just at my hospital, I have no idea what it's like at others).

I also don't think it's fair to imply that midwives do not have proper training.  All CNMs go through extensive schooling and training and are different than lay midwives that are only trained by attending births.  At the hospital I'm giving birth at, the midwife can do almost everything the OB can with the exception of a c-section.

Yes, I am so over it. My numbers are still stable and within limits, but I have had a few post-meal numbers in the 120's (one-hour, limit is 140), when the same meals gave me lower readings a few weeks ago. I've been upping the exercise to compensate, which seems to be working - lots of squats and brisk walks after lunch, 30 minutes on the stationary bike after dinner. Fasting numbers are still ok, though all over the place from mid-70s to low-90s with no rhyme or reason. I'm definitely sick of having to think about what I am eating all the damn time, and I really want a cookie.

Yep, so done! So fed up eating the same things on rotation, i literally just want a big bowl of sugary cereal!

I hear you @madamerwin with the same meals having different readings, i had the same breakfast everyday last week & whilst 6 of the 7 days were fine, one of the days readings was over target. Its so frustrating!

eta: i also really want a jam doughnut

I would love to have numbers these good! +1 to no rhyme or reason with the meals. 1/3 a cup of black beans gave me a 1 hr of 185 yesterday. wtf? And I'm getting bruises from insulin injections. I don't even care about sweets. i just want a damn fruit smoothie.
  • @Gretchypoo that's weird, black beans are what have been giving me wonky numbers too!

    So weird!
  • Last night we decided that we should go for a nice dinner on the monday night before i go into the hospital to be induced since it would be the last time that itd just be the two of us before we become 3. I declared that i would have all the nice food and dessert if i felt like it as itd only be one day and the baby would be here. My husband said i shouldnt (to which the automatic knee jerk reaction of "ill do what i want & youll not tell me what i can and cant do") but now feeling guilty for even thinking about it. Urgh!
  • @Gretchypoo Sorry about bruising!

    xxx needle trigger warning xxx
Could you be hitting muscle? I can't do shots in the thigh b/c of that.
Also, you don't have need any speed or force on the pen or needle when you're inserting it :) My grandpa was a 'jabber'. He was also a Marine, so maybe it's a mental thing, lol. I had the most luck by barely pinching up fat, fairly slowly inserting just the needle (no pushing in skin! ever!), unpinching, and slowly pushing down the plunger...and I think I'm out of unsolicited advice on bruising now ;)

  • I am sooooooo over poking my fingers.  My numbers have been mostly good, though right before and around Christmas I allowed myself a few indulgences which spiked a couple of numbers (plus we all had the plague right before Christmas so no cooking/take out resulted in a few higher numbers).  But doctor wasn't concerned with it at all.  Baby's measuring in the 45 percentile and I've actually been losing weight (doctor even mentioned possibly upping my limits if I keep losing too much weight).  So things are on track, I'm just over this whole checking business :-p  You can also add me to the list of certain meals giving inconsistent readings.  Oh well.  I'm absolutely ready to have my body back but I'm not ready for this kid to be out yet.
  • @Lafreeman21 I switched to thighs bc it is getting harder to find places on my belly to squeeze ;-)

The problem is the pen. When i do a regular injection with the syringe it is easy-peasy. But the pen I have to push harder with my thumb and I think it shakes my skin so I get a little bleeding and sometimes a small bruise. I think my technique needs work...
  • @gretchypoo Sorry :/ I wasn't very coordinated with pens either.

  • @Gretchypoo ive started noticing bruising now aswell on my sides & its getting sorer to inject now too :(
  • @Janefelicity I'm sorry to hear that :-( Good news though, youre almost done!! I hope your sweep works this week :-)
  • Fingers crossed @Gretchypoo! How are you getting on this week?
  • @Janefelicity I have a cold that has made me miserable and travelled 8 hrs for a baby shower that exhausted me for 2 days but otherwise good! they increased my insulin again so I'm finally getting consistently good numbers :-)
  • Thankfully aside from an increase, followed by a slight decrease in my nighttime insulin everything has been pretty steady lately. I have even been able to space out my visits to the Diabetes clinic to biweekly instead of weekly, which is awesome.

Im counting down till the end though because I am so sick of timing when to eat! I'm counting down till I can eat an everything bagel too! I cannot eat white bread without a huge spike so bagels are a no go until baby is out!

  • @hispenguin when i was first diagnosed i tried wholewheat bagels but it wasnt any better readings wise as the dough is a sweeter, denser dough than ordinary wholewheat bread unfortunately. Not long left to go before you can enjoy all the good things again, hang in there!
im curious to see after the massive restrictions in diet do we all immediately go mad and have all the things we werent allowed or if we continue with the healthier, lower carb & sugar regieme going forward.
  • @Gretchypoo 8 hours is a long drive for anyone never mind a pregnant lady with a nasty cold! Thats tough going! Did you enjoy the shower?
  • @Janefelicity the shower was lovely :-) In 2 wks H's friends are throwing him a baby shower 2 hrs away (4 hr trip) I'm so exhausted after this weekend I told him idk if I can do it.

@hispenguin +1 to missing certain foods. I miss orange juice. But I do think I'll be more thoughtful of food choices in the future.

@becbec28 I love the idea of having a list, hahaha!  One of my coworkers had some delicious biscuits this morning and I was thinking how I want to make some after the baby is here.  I may steal the idea of putting together a Pinterest board for it.

I've been having a hard couple of days because I either had some kind of food poisoning thing or mild stomach bug.  All I've been able to eat is crackers, toast, and bananas which has not been great for my blood sugar but I don't know what else to do.

  • I ate lower carb after GD last time. mostly I think I became aware of carbs more.

I don't like juice that much so I never added it back to my diet. love bagels, so I ate them. if it was a choice at the movies of popcorn or candy, I was more likely to chose popcorn.

I didn't stop eating carbs like I was on the GD diet, but I was more selective. and of course there's always the option of eating wedding cake or going to Chinese food  (blowing your diet) which we just don't have right now.

  • I have already had my cheats :-p  Maybe that makes me a crappy mom taking the risk but I dunno.  I mean, my numbers have mostly been under, for a while there I was struggling keeping my weight on and baby is measuring only 45% with tummy to head measurements being just fine, so I figured I could cheat a little (esp since doctor even said they might up my limits if I kept losing weight).  Mostly at the snacks...which I don't take readings after those :-p  Just little cheats, not like I'm chowing down on giant fudge sundaes or anything :-)
  • I have a few things I definitely want to eat after I deliver, but I plan to be MUCH more aware of my carb intake in the future... H and I started eating healthier early in my pregnancy anyway (he's lost 25lbs), so while I don't plan to limit myself quite as much as I have on the GD diet, I'm not going to go back to how I ate pre-pregnancy. It's crazy how many carbs everything has (especially sugar!), and since they say that 50% of women with GD go on to develop T2 diabetes within 10 years, I plan to do everything I can to get into better shape post-baby. At this rate, I will probably be to my pre-baby weight immediately after delivery (maybe less), and my goal is to lose another 20lbs after (which would put me at my ideal healthy weight - which is really the top end of the "normal" BMI). The possibility of developing T2 diabetes is enough motivation for me to get my butt in gear.

  • FFC- im sick and just beyond exhausted and last night I'd gotten home from a huge weekend away. So we ordered pizza. I missed my afternoon snack, ate 3 hours early and went to bed too early to even have my evening snack. I didn't take my blood sugar either. I literally ate pizza in the bathtub bc the jets were helping my back and went straight to bed.

Flame away, I know it wasn't good for baby or me but I was miserable and H was not in a helpful mood (also sick and exhausted)

the idea of cooking or even leaving the house to get a decent meal was so overwhelming I literally cried.
  • Aww @Gretchypoo, sometimes you need a break!  Pizza one day is probably better than being completely exhausted and overwhelmed with trying to find a better dinner.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Gretchypoo I'm sure the occasional splurge doesn't hurt! And pizza probably isn't THAT bad in the grand scheme of things... Better than a big ol' bowl of white rice or a half of a cheesecake.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @madamerwin oh, it was bad. Pizza Hut and like 5 pieces.... And then I slept 11 hrs (with pee breaks. obvi ;-) ) Tonight: minestrone soup!!

Just get back on track and it'll all be fine! Gotta say, pizza DOES sound good. I've been making pizza with a cauliflower crust, which sounds gross but is actually good. Aside from not being crispy, you can almost convince yourself it's real pizza. But it's a pain in the ass to make, and I miss REAL pizza. Which is weird, because I've never been all that in to pizza, but now that I can't have it I want it.

Still, better than eating a pint of ice cream or half a cheesecake, I'm sure :)

  • @madamerwin LOL! Exactly, I didn't even eat a cupcake at my baby shower! I've been so good!
