Re: Sleep Regressions/Sleep Help

  • @DachshundMomma a friend of mine went through this with the same age baby. Have their ears checked out!
  • Loading the player...
  • @hreed7289 I will. It's mostly only happening at night. During the day he seems to be just fine. I caved and gave him a dose of Tylenol early this morning. It just breaks my heart to see him so upset and in what seems like a lot of pain or extremely scared. We cosleep so I'm right there so I don't think he is afraid I've left.
  • @DachshundMomma Good luck! I hope you figure it out. That must be terrifying.   :(

anyone else going through a 5 month regression?!
For 3-4 nights he was up every two hours. Two nights ago it was every 1.5 hours (my fault because he had really bad gas. I think b/c of the grilled onions I ate). Last night he legit did not sleep. Not even really in my arms. He was tired and cranky, but would not sleep. He kept fidgeting and fussing.

  • Thanks so much everyone on the encouragement.  I also reached out to one of my friends who is a L&D nurse and she keeps things real.  She reminded me of how tired and miserable I felt after not sleeping all night and as an adult only require 8 hours and baby needs 14 or so hours and is trying to grow and develop and how terrible she must have felt being so tired.  She reminded me that we both need our sleep and a little crying won't kill her as long as I know her basic needs have been met.  I laid her down last night and she started the same pattern of waking up after 40 minutes screaming.  I stayed strong and let her cry alone for 5 minutes then went in and just rubbed her back (so I didn't feel like a complete a hole and so I didn't think she felt scared).  The first cry session I gave in and picked her up...I could immediately tell it made things worse so I didn't give in again.  I'm glad I looked at the clock because it felt like it took an eternity, but in reality, including the 5 minutes of crying alone it took 20 minutes.  She woke up again after 50 minutes, and again it took 20 minutes of crying before she went back to sleep.  45 minutes later she woke up...but get this...it took her 6 minutes!!!.  She then slept for 5 hours and I think the next wake up was purely out of habit and she went right back to sleep until 730 this morning!  I'm hoping tonight she remembers and we have even more progress.  I also turned the sound off of my monitor.  I could hear her easily as she is LOUD and our rooms are adjacent but I could still watch her on the video to make sure she was ok.

My friend reminded me it typically takes babies 3 or 4 days to learn a new routine like this.  She had her youngest (now 13) sleeping 10 hours at a time by 10 weeks.  She is a baby Goddess.

@DachshundMomma - that sounds exactly like what my LO was doing.  She skipped the stirring and fussing and went straight to screaming and thrashing around like a fish out of water.

  • @FTM53 - YUP!!  Dealing with that right now!  My LO has seemed to be a few weeks early on regressions/rolling/etc so I'm going with it is an early 6 month regression...it is terrible...but getting better after last night
  • @FTM53 it really is. I am sure it has something to do with his teeth too but as someone who also suffers from night terrors, I feel extra awful.
  • Is there a 6 mo sleep regression? I want my sleeping baby back!!
  • DD2 has been waking up 4-5 times per night for 3 nights. I'm hoping it's because she just had a tooth pop through.
  • @schaze I read that there are 3-4 months, 6 months, 8-10 months, 12 months, 18 months and 2 year regressions.  Not all are as bad as others and not all babies get all of them.

  • @DachshundMomma L did that for a bit. She wouldn't fully wake up sometimes, but she'd kind of suddenly cry in her sleep.

  • I got 6 hours of sleep in my own bed last night. It was broken up, but it was 6 hours and in my actual bed not the rocking chair!! I think he's been fussy because of teething because he started off up every hour wanting to nurse and fussy at the boob, but slept 3 solid hours after I gave him a bit of Tylenol.
  • @mnkenned Congrats!! I'm so glad you're having success!! A sleeping baby is a blessing. Remember though, if she's BF'd, 4 hours is the max they really go at night. Hope it continues!!
  • @mnkenned Awesome job momma!! Glad you're making progress.

On a side note can you tell me about that sleep sack?? It looks comfy!
  • We're going to have to re-sleep train E. It's been weeks since she's slept in her bed. Not looking forward to it!
  • We officially started sleep training now that we all have a clean bill of health. But DH is arguing with me about how often to feed him at night. I say 3 hours b/c DS is exclusively BF and APA says 4 is normal/max unless they sleep through on their own. DH wants just go to 4 (right now he's at every 2 hours). I feel so frustrated.

@TiffRox81- it's actually by Boppy. I really like it because it's double layered cotton and the inside is like a terry material, so it's thick and warm without being fleece.  I got it at BBB and when I went back to get more I couldn't find any :(

    ETA: found it on Amazon:

  • @FTM53 We're kind of trying to figure out the same thing. Right now, DS is getting up every 3 hours to eat, and I'm worried he's getting in the habit of waking up too often. I'd like to stretch it further between feedings. I do think he's waking and crying because he's truly hungry, just based on the fact that he goes back to sleep when he's fed. But on the other hand, he used to sleep for 8 hours straight, so I know he's capable of longer stretches. All I can say is thank God for side-lying nursing!
  • Elijah wakes up every 2 hours looking for boob.  And I'm thinking he's not hungry because he's not doing much sucking before falling back asleep.  Anybody have some successful sleep training stories to share?  As I'm typing this I hear him on the monitor...lol...was just up there an hour ago.  Anybody else start nursing for comfort and it's gotten out of control?!?!  Poor baby can't seem to stay asleep....
  • @labecker55358 @austinjl. i am with you ladies.  declan used to sleep to thr. the night and then stopped and will get up 1 to 2 times a night.. sometimes more..i always nurse and he is eating but i am not 100% if he is comfort nursing to fall back asleep or what.  going to attempt sleep training and transitioning to the crib while i am off next week!
  • @mnkenned Thanks!! I love it! My only hesitation is the biggest size available is 6-9. Being that she's already practically 6 months, and SO MANY 6-9 things already aren't huge on her....I'm not sure how much time we'd get out of it. Would you say it runs true to size or a little on the larger/small side?
  • Last night was the first night in weeks that E has gotten to sleep before 9pm. Granted she still slept in our bed, but this is progress!
  • Not sure what the mix is here....I think most people do bottle feeds from time to time? For those of you that are using bottles, have you stepped up feedings beyond 4oz consistently? I'm starting to think that's what we need to do. She can take down 4oz in about 17 seconds. Seriously! I haven't timed her, but I bet that's close. But based on what I'm pumping throughout my work day....not sure my production will allow for that! I might have to start supplementing the extra ounce with formula. I might try sacrificing a couple of my freezer stash bags and do some increased bottle feedings over the holiday weekend and see if that makes a difference with the sleep.

We're still doing 3oz bottles with the slowest flow nipple when she gets bottles. We are also still following paced feedings. They seem to be ok. I'm back to work in 2 weeks, so I'll be able to gage her sleep then. I'll be on a second type shift 3 evenings a week, so she won't be nursing before bed.

    Edited- I can't spell.
  • @TiffRox81 LO gets three 4oz bottles while I'm at work. Due to supply issues a few weeks back, I've had to use 3 bags of my stash, but, yesterday LO only ate two of this 3 bottles, so I can replace it.

He eats the 4oz bottles in no time flat and will NOT tolerate paced feedings, but he seems to be full for 3-4 hours after a bottle. As my supply continues to improve, I'm hoping to increase it to 3 5oz bottles or 4 4oz bottles. I've added an extra pumping session to help increase supply. I've read that babies max out somewhere between 19 and 30oz a day, by average is 25oz a day (roughly 1oz per hour).

If you're seeing him hungry more often than 1-1.5 oz per hour, then you probably need to increase his oz, but otherwise, I know that my LO will tank up (clusterfeed) in the evenings still right before his long stretch of sleep. He'll want to nurse at roughly 6pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm (bed between 9-930).
