Re: All Things Breastfeeding

  • @kvruns I feel like I do too!! I don't know if it's just the fact that I feel like I do is nurse so I smell like milk 24/7 but I am feeling the same way!

  • How do you balance nursing and pumping? Now that he is nursing this is good but I still want to pump some for night feedings, etc. I don't like pumping after already nursing 30-45 min not to mention I usually just get an ounce or two

How old is baby?  It's not recommended to pump until 4-6 weeks until supply regulates. If baby gets a nighttime bottle, then best to pump @ that time to make up for that feeding. I always found nursing way easier.
Once I did start pumping, I pumped after first AM feed and sometimes before I went to sleep.
Also, an ounce or 2 after a feeding is great! Baby doesn't need very much per feeding.

I was EPing from days 4-8 bc he wouldn't latch so pumping already started. After my LC appt he will nurse which is good. So far I've pumped first thing in morning, sometimes second feeding and once at night. I almost prefer pumping to nueskng in the morning since I can get enough for 2 bottles
  • I had to pump this past weekend as I had two doctors appointments both Saturday and Sunday and as much as I'd love to have fed her before leaving,  I knew not to expect the timing of it to work out and she does NOT eat after being woken up, she's too drowsy and ends up hungry in an hour and then a cluster cycle starts.

SO we tried the bottle this weekend and I am so happy to say she had no issues! She is 12 days old today. Took the bottle no problem both days, then nursed without a problem when I got home as though there was never a change.

Now I am going to start a stash in the fridge/freezer for the times I really don't want to wake up so that DH can feed her, or for times I need to leave the house for more than a couple of hours.

I pump an hour and a half after she nurses, that way it's smack in between two feeds and I can get 2ish ounces, or more in the morning. I know they say you can cause nipple confusion or screw up your supply but I took a big chance and it has paid off big time. I can't describe how freeing and how much of a relief it was to know DH was at home feeding the baby.

  • @PrettyPalomino glad it worked! We haven't had any nipple confusion issues and we've even used 5 different bottle types. I've actually found my supply increased when I went back to nursing 4 days ago vs EPing the days prior
  • I've been dealing with oversupply and forceful letdown since my milk came in. I'm frequently engorged and leak through breast pads all the time ... because of this DD often only takes one side per feeding and even then will not fully empty my breast. I have been pumping several times a day to try to help with this, but it's hard with a 1 year old to chase around. Anyway, now I think I might have developed mastitis :-(

This afternoon I picked up DS and when he pressed against my chest, I felt pain in both breasts (different spots on each). I couldn't feel any hard lumps and nothing looked red, but within the hour I had the worst headache of my life, severe body aches and chills. I took Ibuprofen which helped a lot and have been nursing/pumping all evening. I took a hot shower and tried to massage each breast where it felt painful. Well, now after nursing again I'm sitting in bed with body aches again and chills so bad my teeth are chattering and the bed is shaking. I'm going to call the doctor in the morning, but is there anything I can do in the mean time to help?

Call the after hours line for your doctor - you probably needn't antibiotics sooner rather Than later. Also try cabbage leaves, send hubby to the store and then stuff your bra with the leaves for an hour at a time. Idk why Or how it helps, but it does!

  • @mrsmoose5 I had the same thing and my doctor has put me on penicillin and a topical ointment for my nipples. He said breast infections are really common this early. Definitely don't put off calling your doctor. After two doses the fever disappeared and I feel so much better.
  • @mrsmoose5 you need to stop pumping. When you pump you are telling you body to make more milk which makes oversupply worse not better. Block feed, use cabbage leaves, talk to a LC, and your supply should regulate to produce only what LO needs. Breastfeeding is a supply and demand system. Don't tell your body to produce more milk than it needs to by pumping :)
  • We started supplementing yesterday. Baby girl was born 9lbs 15oz. She was down to 9lbs when we left the hospital and then 8lbs 15oz one week after birth at her first pedi appointment. Pedi was not concerned at that point, but we made a weight check for a week later. I was exclusively breast feeding. I feel like I definitely have enough milk, but I don't think she's getting any hindmilk. I'm not sure if it's because she's not a long eater and passes out 7 minutes into feeding (I do everything I can to try and wake her up to feed longer) or if it has something to do with the breast reduction I had in 2008. I continued to feed her every two hours during the day and every three at night. At her weight check yesterday, she was down another oz to 8lbs 14oz. Pedi now wants us to supplement by after two feedings daily, bottle feeding her (either pumped or formula) an extra 2oz. We have another weight check in a week. This is so different than my first because my first would never latch and I hardly made any pumping. This time, I can actually feel my milk and I leak everywhere, as my three year old kindly points out. In between feedings I'm able to pump 2oz, which I only do once or twice a day. Hopefully supplementing this little bit will help her start to gain weight.
  • The past four nights LO has been up for his 1am feeding and it has turned into a complete meltdown each time. I figured out last night that it's because I'm not producing milk for him, or at least not enough. I'm trying both breasts but there's just nothing there. Daytime feedings are no problem. It's 7 am now and we're golden, it's just the 1am feeding that seems to be an issue. Last night I caved and gave him Similac so he would be full and stop crying.

Has anyone had this before? Any advice on what I can do to improve supply in the early morning hours?

While I haven't experienced it, are you hydrated enough?  Throughout our night feedings I drink another 24oz of water in addition to the 86+oz I drink during the day.

how often does he feed at night? Only at 1am? If so, I'd start feeding him at least two more times at night. Nursing is supply and demand. If you only feed once at night, you're telling your body that you only need milk for one feeding. And your supply will drop.

I you are a heavy leaker, disposable are you best options, but I use reusable at home to give my nips a break.

I received these as a product sample and they actually work well. I prefer them to Bamboobies during this time of overactive let down

  • Anyone else have 1 breast significantly more full than the other? My right one has always pumped at least 50% more and I've noticed it is much more full still. When nursing i alternate sides to try to keep the left side production up but it seems to be doing the opposite

Yup. For the second kid now, my right just produces more and has a faster letdown. I just go with it.

  • Getting seriously frustrated with nursing!  Generally, nursing itself is going AWESOME. DS2 nurses infinitely better (latches better, drains breast faster, etc) than DS1 ever did.
He was born at 9 lbs. 1 oz. and was 8 lbs. 9 oz. @ pedi appt @ a week old. At 2 weeks, he was 8 lbs. 15 oz. - so still not back to birth weight.
I guess I'll try to force in a few extra feedings, but he's just not interested in the 2-3 hr daytime and 3-4 hour night time feedings. Tack on an hour or
so to each of those and that's his "hungry" times. If I try otherwise, he just munches on my nipple and causes pain.
    Ugh....

  • @atcwag I'm in the same boat, she's two weeks old and just a couple ounces shy of her birthweight. The doctor asked me to wake her and feed every 2 hours instead of on demand nursing we've been doing every 3-3.5 hours, but waking her up to feed has been a horrible experience.  She just munches on my nipple for a couple of minutes and falls asleep, then cries when I take her off and we go through a cluster feed cycle for the following 2 hours.

I've made the executive decision to not wake her anymore, she eats only half of what she would if she had woken up on her own just a half hour or hour later. I think this is a mommy knows best, go with your gut kind of situation.

This was us with DD1 and it was so stressful! Feeding on demand wasn't what she wanted and needed and ultimately worked!

have you done a weighted feeding with a LC? That may also help assure you that you are doing the right thing!

Agreee the weighted feeding at my LC appointment was very helpful bc I was afraid he wasn't getting anything or getting enough but it showed him gain an ounce after one side and then another after the other side which was good
  • So, not exactly sure what's going on with my son. I've been having my husband bottle feed at night with my pumped breastmilk. I pump about 2-3 times a day, enough to get about 12 oz, 6 oz I freeze, and the other 6 for night feedings with daddy. With eating every 2 hours, he should only need 4 oz. (2 oz every two hours) but the baby just will not sleep for daddy and fusses and cries for more milk and ends up eating the full 6oz after just a few hours. Then, baby somehow ends up on my boob again for the rest of the night. None of us are getting sleep at night, I just want to know what is going on. He's not like this during the day. Anyone have advice for us?

    1. Are you pumping when daddy bottle feeds to make up those feeding sessions?  If not, this is a sure way to have supply issues down the line. Nursing is a supply/demand system, so supply will go down if your body isn't triggered to make more milk during these times.
    2. Nursing is about more than calories. Baby may very well just need your comfort. Check out information on 4th trimester.
    3. Is daddy pace-feeding bottles?  Holding baby upright with bottle horizontal, not pouring milk into baby's mouth? Taking breaks every oz or so? Taking 15-20 min to finish bottle? Pace-feeding is very important for BF babies.

  • I pump one session during the night/early morning usually. I actually started gradually cutting down on pumping because I had issues with a clogged duct and oversupply and ds was choking on my letdown in the beginning. I'm just now getting that under control.
He does great with pace feeding. He burps him very consistently and always holds him upright because of the baby's reflux and walks him around the house. We initially thought it was because of the reflux he was acting like this, since his pediatrician said reflux babies tend to soothe eat. Apparently, that wasn't the case since we have been giving him his medicine before bedtime.
I suspect it may be a comfort thing to, even though it took me about an hour to get him to sleep last night without the bottle, but I'm wondering how to combat this. I need my sleep too and would really like DH to participate in feedings as well.

We had a pedi appt today, she's back up to her birth weight plus a couple extra ounces! She gained 7 ounces in 6 days which is obviously a big relief and confirms I am indeed producing enough.

She lost pretty much a whole pound in the first 2 days of life, and it took 2 weeks to gain it back. Despite this the doc is still pushing formula to supplement... but I don't think that's necessary.

  • Question about pumping. I am going to start next week (baby is 6 weeks).
How many times a day do I pump? And for how long each time?
Can I pump right after feeding? If baby gets hungry again a half hour later (cluster monster) will he be okay or will he remain hungry and make for a really cranky baby? Or should I wait until he's on more of a schedule?
Sorry that was more than one question. I clearly neeed advice.

How many x/day depends on why you're pumping. Are you returning to work and need a stash?  Just want someone to give a bottle/day?  Want a small stash for a night out?
With DS1, I started pumping around 4/5 weeks in preparation for return to work @ 12 weeks. Daddy gave 1 evening bottle/day and I pumped during that time to replace that session. I also pumped after first morning feed and sometimes before I went to bed.
I always pumped for 15m. That gave me 2-3 letdowns. Some say to pump until milk stops flowing, but I found I always dribbled milk, no matter how long I pumped. I always used breast compressions while pumping to help with flow/letdown.
I only pumped when I knew I'd get a stretch of baby sleep so I wasn't nursing right after pumping.

I made my own out of the tons of thin, flannel blankets I had from DS1. I cut them in to rectangles or squares and sewed around the edges. Way more economical, especially because I go through 20+ a day.

Can I pump right after feeding? If baby gets hungry again a half hour later (cluster monster) will he be okay or will he remain hungry and make for a really cranky baby? Or should I wait until he's on more of a schedule?
Sorry that was more than one question. I clearly neeed advice.
The standard rule is that you pump in lieu of a feeding so as to continue to regulate your supply. But when building a stash that is kind of hard I always just pumped one extra time before bed because it meant I could sleep on my stomach a little longer.

Question: have any of you eliminated foods by choice and are seeing results or effects in your baby?  I'm developing my own food allergies while the baby is not and think I might need to cut out a few foods but I am worried about how that will affect him.

I've had the best luck pumping in the morning, about 30 minutes after LO eats and while she is either happy or down for a catnap.
Pumping both breasts typically yields more milk from each one rather than if I just single pump and I get more letdowns when double pumping.
I'm trying to pump at least once a day to build up a stash prior to going back to work, but if you're just looking to have enough to give you a little freedom, you may find that an occasional pumping session is plenty and if you find that LO only takes one breast at a particular feeding, it's nice to pump the other.
Fwiw, I'm better this time, but I was a terrible producer for the pump last time and I'd get maybe one ounce at a time. It was frustrating! However, persistence is key and I found that even those small amounts add up! Even now, if I don't quite have 4 ounces for a freezer bag, I just keep the bottle in the fridge and the add a few days worth of milk together prior to freezing, that way I'm freezing a whole bottles worth of milk and not wasting bags or making it harder for me when I go to use the frozen milk.

  • I made my own out of the tons of thin, flannel blankets I had from DS1. I cut them in to rectangles or squares and sewed around the edges. Way more economical, especially because I go through 20+ a day.
You are an inspiration! If only I could sew.

  • What do you do with your breast pump accessories after you pump? Do you boil them every time?
