I had been reading about the amount on Kellymom, which is primarily why I was so surprised that she "increased" her volume, but I have not read about paced bottled feeding! Thank you, I will check that out. She is primarily breast fed but takes a bottle once a week.
Does any one else have one boob that sucks? I only pump two times a day typically but can only get one ounce from it and he hasn't eaten for three hours or more and other one I get like four ounces. Any tips to increase that side I always offer the bad side first I should prob pump they side throughout the day but I'm too lazy I have had mastitis on that side and was having issues in beg w him latching on that side etc but now is fine
@john5111 I'm having the same issue and also had mastisis and several plugged ducts on the now sucky side. As far as I know, what you're doing is about all there is to do, you can do some of the lactation foods to increase overall supply, but that will not target just the one side. You could also pump that side in between feedings to stimulate extra production for a little while and see if that balances you out. I haven't tried that yet because it does take more time, but it might be worth a try.

I had a plugged duct and nipple bleb earlier this week. I had affected my supply. Anyone have a good indication of when supply should return to normal?
@shaylair I just had an appointment with my LC and talked about this. They drink from the bottle too fast and don't know they are full before they drink too much. She said that once my LO goes to daycare it will seem like they are blowing through my pumped supply and to request paced bottle feeding.
Thx yes I keep saying I'll pump that side after feedings but I get too busy/lazy lol just worried when I go back to work I won't make enough @winnie1122

So I gave up on my right boob. I was only getting 0.5oz from it and C started to refuse it. It dried up and she exclusively eats from my left. The awkward part is my boobs are noticeablely different in size. It seems to have adjusted nicely and I get 4-5 oz when I pump.

How do you know if you're drying up? I've had a cold for about 2 weeks now and then food poisoning this last week. So I know I'm not as hydrated as I should be. I'm still producing milk, but it's less and today my boobs have pretty much hurt all day, but no discoloration, warmth, or hardness. TIA

I've heard it helps to have a practice day. Plan a whole day as if going to work, nurse before then have someone give baby a bottle the rest of the day while you pump the amount of times you think you'll be able to. You can then see if there is a difference between what you've pumped and know how much freezer milk will be necessary per day.
@hreed7289 logically, you only need 1 days worth of freezer milk. I had 4-5 days worth just in case.
I just finished my first week of work and only used the one day of freezer milk. LO then got whatever I pumped the day before. He doesn't really care for the bottle and easily goes 3-4 hours between feedings at daycare.
@setosh that's what I was afraid of, but also secretly looking forward to winding down the BFing
After getting over the mom guilt of not BFing it honestly helped my stress level. He spit up more with my milk and I had to use nipple shields. My production was really high so I had to pump at least 4 times a day along with BFing. It was just too much for me.

I'm doing something similar. Although I haven't returned yet, M will need 3-4 feedings so I want to have a week's worth in the freezer. In theory I'll pump enough when I'm away to cover what she takes in. So she'll just drink yesterday's milk once I go back.
I was really worried at first b/c LO still eats every 2 hours and I was only getting 3-3.5 bottles. But I forgot that he is actually getting more in the bottle than he gets from me. So he's actually only been eating 2-3 bottles. Which has left me with at least another days worth of milk in the fridge.
For those of you who have LOs with a dairy allergy, how long after eliminating dairy from your diet did you see the symptoms go away? Today is a week since I went off dairy and he still had blood in his diaper this morning. They seem to get better throughout the day but the first one of the day still seems bad to me.

@winnie1122 The doctor told me it could take 2 weeks, but it took a month before there was zero blood in her poop. I think after 2 weeks I couldn't see it but they tested it and said there was micro drops of blood still. At 4 weeks, her poop was tested and finally zero blood.
@winnie1122 I am going dairy free because Q has eczema and it's most likely due to a dairy allergy. My pedi said that it can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to clear your system and start showing results. It's only been 4 days for me, but I feel like it already looks better! I can't wait to see it in a month or so when it's all gone. Seeing results makes going dairy free worth it
@arhodes6 Definitely worth it. As much as I miss my cheese, cream, and butter, I've actually been having fun trying new recipes and dairy alternatives! I think I'll probably lose some weight too, so there's a bonus. I made pasta with cauliflower alfredo today and was pleasantly surprised! And I really like almond milk and coconut cream. So I don't think it will be so bad!

Didn't know where else to share this and I know you ladies will understand: I just had to throw out half a feeding (2.5oz) of pumped milk because I found a mosquito floating in the bottle! I have no clue where it came from!! Normally I'm the type to pull the bug out and eat/drink anyway, but this was a mosquito and I work in a hospital. Who knows what type of blood it drank before its creamy death. So upset!! This is why you have a freezer stash!
M must have gone through a growth spurt and my boobs must be adjusting. The last 2 days I feel so engorged between feedings. I pumped last night to relieve the pressure, but unless I want to keep doing that I know I shouldn't. Feels like my milk came in all over again. I'm used to that feeling first thing in the morning (sometimes she sleeps through the night and sometimes she doesn't) but mid day engorgment is for the birds.
@LDSJM123 I had a similar experience last week, suddenly I was super engorged! I actually ended up with a plugged duct on one side and a (very very mild) case of mastitis. Super lame!!!

That is what I'm afraid of.. ugh! We have an out of state wedding next week. Maybe I should pump to avoid a blocked duct or worse, mastitis. The under side of my boob (wear underwire would hit, but I haven't worn any) gets so sore too.
Any tips my baby suddenly will not take a bottle I purposely had given him at least one a day from the beg and now he'll just scream even if im gobe help! I go back to work soon so he needs to take one
@john5111 AJ also hates bottles. After research and talking to my pediatrician and the daycare ppl, these are my words of comfort:
1) A good daycare knows how to get a baby to eat 2) Babies can go up to 15 hours with out eating before it is dangerous 3) A healthy baby is not going to starve itself. Your LO will eventually take the bottle because he's hungry.
AJ has been in daycare for 3 weeks. He currently will wait 3-5 hours between bottles at daycare, when at home, he's hungry every 2. He has added extra time nursing at night either in an extra nursing or extra long nursing (both before bed). He's still making good wet diapers and isn't fussy.
i know as mommys we worry, but he is still learning and if he's otherwise healthy, then I would not be too worried. My LC told me they develop a "nipple preference" will try to wait to get what they want.
My baby took 2.5 ounces at the sitters on Friday. This was HUGE because he's been refusing bottles for 8 weeks or so (after taking one a day consistently for 6/7 weeks). He hadn't eaten for 6 hours before he finally gave in and stopped refusing it. This leads me to believe that yes, if babies are hungry enough, they will take it!!! Super hard though! I feel your pain. My son is at the sitters now once per week. Our pediatrician sid he may have a harder time learning to take it because of the infrequency. With that line of thinking, maybe your baby will figure it out faster! For a long time, my husband used a syringe to give him milk. We also tried a sippy cup and baby spoons. You are doing a great job @john5111
Thanks girls! It's just weird he would take them randomly before I finally got him to take a couple yesterday but only from me not my husband. Not sure if I should just start doing more bottles even though it's a pain now I have a few weeks before I return to work and I work mon-fri 8-5 ahhh
Has anyone switched from breastfeeding to formula? Due to work constraints & having to bb away for a couple of overnights, I just don't think we can continue but everytime my husband tries formula, my son makes a gross face & screams. we've tried different kinds of formula & bottles & nothing seems to work. any tips, tricks, ideas will be helpful!

Have you tried half BM and half formula OR gradually adding more formula to the bottle? While I only was able to BF LO for 2 weeks, I tried the Medela Calma nipple which supposedly mimics the breast but isn't cheap! Honestly though, it's trial and error for bottles...we got lucky that he happen to be okay with the Medela, Phillips Advent and Munchkin Latch bottles all with slow release. Good luck with whatever you end up figuring out and what makes DS happy!
@erinjay1015 we've been doing both since birth. Do you pump? You might have to try a syringe first. The latch bottles are really like nipples. That may help.

I slowly mixed the breast milk into the formula and eventually took it out all together. The bottle thing wasn't an issue for us because my milk didn't come in until day 5 so he had to eat somehow. We first fed him with a syringe and then bottle. He takes avent bottles with the slow flow nipples the best. We recently graduated because I use formula with rice starch due to spit up issues. I hope this helps.
Diapers have just been getting worse even though I eliminated dairy 3 weeks ago and the doctor just had me come in to pick up hypoallergenic formula samples to try over the weekend before his 4 month checkup on Monday. I never wanted to do formula if I could help it, we had a really rough start breastfeeding but finally got the hang of it and I've come to really love that time with him. This allergy thing has made me feel like I'm poisoning my baby even though I've been trying everything to get any allergens out of my system, and when they told me I needed to switch him to formula today I pretty much had a meltdown. I want his stomach to feel better and I obviously want to do what's best for him, but it's killing me that this might be the end of being able to breastfeed him already. And I know this is silly, but I just gave him the first bottle and about cried because the hypoallergenic stuff smells and tastes absolutely awful. He didn't like it and I felt super guilty. DH probably thinks I'm insane because I've been texting him through my meltdown about this and he's trying to reassure me that it's really not a big deal and the baby will be just fine, but I am really emotional about this. Ugh. I know a lot of you have switched or are switching, so at least I know in my head it will be fine, but really didn't expect to be so upset. I just hope his diapers start looking way better soon, then I'll feel a lot better about it.

Definitely mix the two together at first. And pick one kind of formula to stick too so his body can start adjusting to it and he gets used to it. As far as bottles - my LO will only take the ComoTomo type. It looks so much like a boob. We tried like ten different types.
