Pregnancy Chatter and Questions - Week of 10/17

Re: Pregnancy Chatter and Questions - Week of 10/17

  • @helloaustin123 My OB said coffee is fine as long as you're  limiting it to a couple cups a day.  I've cut back from two cups to one small cup so that I can still have iced tea if I want it.  From reading less than 200mg of caffeine a day seems to be the agreed upon safe level.
  • Loading the player...
  • I hardcore pulled back on my coffee habit, but I let myself have a little from time to time.  I listen to my body and if I'm already cramping a lot on a given day I just skip it and drink extra water.
  • Ok good to hear! Yeah my OB said limit to 200 mg a day. I skipped the caffeine in the first tri with my last pregnancy and I planned on doing it with this pregnancy too but I've noticed lately I have been craving it!!
  • I think caffeine is supposed to be under 200mg a day. I typically (and constantly) google whatever caffeinated drink I may want in order to see if its actually worth it. But, for me, as long as I keep it under 200 a day I'm happy. I did the same last pregnancy as well. I am totally in awe of anyone that can nix caffeine, ever. Especially in first tri!

Pretty much this exactly. I have been sticking with my morning (relatively small) coffee.

  • I drink one cup of instant coffee a day, which has less caffeine than brewed. Didn't know there was a connection with caffeine and preggo cramping so maybe I'll just quit completely. It makes sense because I always had to cut back bc of AF cramps
  • @meg2704 I second @riverraine - I got on a waitlist for DS at 6 weeks and I was still waiting nearly 3 months after he was born to have a spot.

  • @Praying41, I started showing 27-28 weeks with DD1 and early 20 weeks with DD2.

I'm usually a 1-2 cup of coffee a day type of person; my OB said it was safe to continue that throughout my past two pregnancies.

  • My Dr told me not to give it up, just don't go crazy.  Also mentioned was the amount of mg per cup varies on the brand you use.  I have already switched to decaf but like @wifeinraleigh28 mentioned it's not the same.  It's probably why I keep making it and then leaving it on the counter.  My subconscious is telling me it's not worth it.
  • I'm a coffee drinker, but I don't have more than one a day usually.

  • I don't drink coffee but I LOVE my Diet Coke. I have cut it back to 2-3 a day and next week I'll go down to just 1 a day. I read somewhere that weening like that is better than having the caffeine withdrawal. I like flavored green tea so I will probably switch to that for my morning caffeine.

I am graduating from an associates program in December and will be applying and interviewing towards the end of November. What are everyone's thoughts on telling potential employers that I'm pregnant? I'll be 13 weeks Dec 16.

  • I've cut back on my caffeine intake. I used to drink 3 sometimes 4 12 oz
cokes per day. Now I am trying to limit myself to 1.  Some days it's easier than others.
  • Is anyone else taking B6 and unisom for nausea? My OB recommended, and I just picked it up today. Is the unisom just to help you sleep or does it truly help with the nausea as well? I read somewhere that it was initially created as an anti nausea medicine, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.
  • I'm drinking 1 cup of coffee in the morning and drinking herbal teas throughout the day. For me I'm really trying to push the fluids and drinking 3-4 Tervis a day!!

@MotherHen b6 and doxylamine is actually first line in the algorithm for nausea due to pregnancy :) you take half of the unisom dose that you would for sleep

  • I managed to give up real coffee while TTC and was drinking decaf until I developed a pretty sudden and serious aversion to it a week or so ago.  It's kind of odd to not have coffee as part of my morning routine now.  I'm craving Teavana Youthberry tea from Starbucks like crazy, but while it's very low in caffeine, the hibiscus in it worries me so I'm not giving in to that.

Is anyone still drinking coffee or did you give it up for first tri?
Still drinking coffee. I cut back from 2 cups a day to 1. I also drank a cup a day through most of my first pregnancy. My midwife was ok with it.
Edit to add, I switched to black tea in first tri with my son because, basically, I wasn't sure of the risks and I was scared. A bit more researched in the subject now, I feel comfortable drinking 1 cup of coffee a day in first tri.

I am!! It seems to be helping.  I take unisom and b6 together at night and sometimes another dose of just b6 in the day.  I have all day nausea and it seems to tone it down for me.
  • I also still drink caffeine.  Usually one coffee in the morning (30mg caffeine) since I drink a flavored kuerig one and usually 1-2 cans of coke zero.  I've started drinking sprite instead due to my nausea.  I do try to limit caffeine to under 200mg per doctor recommendation.  I was a lot more strict with my first kiddo but have been more laid back with my last pregnancy and this one.  I also drink caffeine while nursing and have had no issues.

I had blood work and urine test yesterday and the nurse commented on how hydrated I am so I guess I'm not doing too bad staying hydrated and drinking caffeine.
  • I scheduled my appointment for 11/15 and set up a countdown for it on my phone :) I have been using a 6/25 EDD because that was what FF said but when I put my LMP in other calculators it says 6/27. O was on CD13. Not a big deal but I WANNA KNOW!!

  • I'm bloated too! This will be my third already Looks like I have a cute baby bump. Edd 7-12
  • I think a big part of my struggle is that DH and I have a daily morning habit of walking approximately 3 miles or so around our neighborhood, which includes a stop at our neighborhood mom & pop coffee shop. I can't just not get a nice hot beverage, especially now that the weather is getting cooler. I can only handle about 1 apple cider each week, so I usually just order decaf now.

@sevenn I'm curious about the herbal tea. I keep reading that some herbal teas might not be safe during pregnancy, but I love tea and would love to know which herbal teas are good, or even recommended during pregnancy. Apparently there is a pregnancy tea called 'tea for two'... anyone try it?

  • My OB said no more than one cup a day and asked about my soda in take. Which is very low.

Had a rough day yesterday woke up and my boobs were not sore anymore which has been my biggest symptom so I called the OB office wanting to leave a note for my nurse and ended up crying on the phone with the lady who scheduled me an appointment yesterday afternoon. My doc did a pregnancy test (since it was the fist time seeing her) and told me everything was normally and talked a lot to me about nutrition. I am unfortunately home alone most of the time as my husband works a lot and I am a full time student. She politely said I need a hobby lol!

I just found out that under the Affordable Care Act, breast pumps may now be covered by your insurance.  I called my insurance and I am 100% covered for a breast pump from an "in-network" provider and 80% covered from an "out-of-network" provider.  I know it's really early, but I wanted to share with you all because breast pumps are expensive!
Mine is about doneski after two babes so I am definitely doing this for this baby.

@mirdamae03 I believe each new pregnancy/birth you can request a new breast pump! :)
Yes, I was bummed my insurance was grandfathered in when I had #2 so I didn't qualify last time. I have a new insurance this time so I will be able to take advantage of this sweet deal.

Those of you who are deciding to stay home after baby, when/how are you telling your employer?
I have my health insurance through my work and am so afraid to tell them I'm not coming back and risk having my insurance cancelled on my last day of employment.

  • @brij2006 most companies will keep you on the insurance through the month that you leave so if you leave June 2nd you will be insured through then after that they will drop you because you are a cost to the company. Even if you didn't tell them until after your 8 weeks some companies will require you to pay what they put out while u were away but that depends on the company. My mom does this stuff for a living so I have heard all the stories. I would look into other heath insurances asap just so you know the cost. Obamacare opens after November 1st so you can look at your options

Wow really!?  That is annoying.  They were handing them out like candy at the hospital when I gave birth to DD.  A guy literally popped his head in my door and said "breastfeeding?".  I nodded my head affirmatively while cramming food into my face.  "What insurance carrier?".  I told him and he made a little note then hands me a pump.  Ummm.. OK cool!  Already had one from DS, but hey.... why not.

I am still drinking it... however, I did reduce the amount that I am drinking from 2-3 cups (8-16oz each cup) to only 1-8oz cup a day... I tried to go cold turkey my last pregnancy and it made me have migraines... wasn't about to do that again! Lol
