  • @mrsdrwombat, @skysong113, @jwatt5, @fivetimesnoluck, @Sasha29 and anyone else I forgot--thanks so much for your kind words. We had a good appointment with the urologist today. He's doing more bloodwork and then he'll decide which medication to prescribe for DH. I'm feeling pretty optimistic. I'm annoyed at us that we didn't go in sooner when it became clear DH's motility was not a fluke, but I think we would have still done the IUIs. I wanted a summer baby so badly--and of course we still could have one, I'm only 1DPIUI.

Since it will take at least 3 months to see results, I proposed laying off the IUIs again until February, but DH wants to keep doing them. So question (that I should really ask my RE): does anyone know if 6 IUIs is the actual max or do some do more? At this rate, we'd hit 6 IUIs before we even saw any treatment results. Personally I feel like it would be a waste of time and effort. However, my insurance doesn't seem to have a limit on the number of IUIs.

@skysong113 I'm glad your baseline went well! Good luck with the letrozole. FX for some good follie growth.

@JWatt5 Way to keep up your spirit, haha! You're your own personal cheerleader. FX for a good scan!

@fivetimesnoluck I'm so glad to hear you're ok! I'm happy you were still able to do your IUI. It's great that you have a big distraction, although of course it would be better if it didn't involve downed trees and power outages. ;-) I hope you get power back soon, and your TWW goes by fast. FX for success!

@LoweeeK That is excellent follie growth! I'm sure DH is in the same camp as your H re: hating the early morning collection. Get him to bed early and ply with coffee if necessary, haha. Good luck!
  • @Bababatty I think you will get varying opinions on the IUI's. I was always under the assumption it's not the IUI itself, but the medications you are on that dictate the success rates. I've seen other women who have RE's tell them after 3-4 IUI's there's no point and only IVF is the option after that. We did 4 rounds of Letrozole and IUI without any success. My RE suggested moving on to injectables and IUI. So IMO IUI is just a way to get the sperm where it needs to be, and the medications are really what dictates the success rates. But I think everyone's doctor will say something different. It so happens that our insurance only covers three injectable and IUI rounds. So we'll max out at 7 IUI's Four with Letrozole and three with injectables. (currently at the tail end of my fifth IUI).

  • @LoweeeK Good Luck!! I know, my husband whines about collection times too. He now calls my RE's collection room, his 'masturbation station' lol (TMI, sorry)...

@fivetimesnoluck So happy you are safe! Not the best way to wait out your TWW, but effective!

@JWatt5 This is my first month on injectables. I made my husband jab me the first night... then I did it myself yesterday. Definitely not as bad as I thought, but I totally psyched myself up and did lots of jumping around too :)

I hope everyone is having a great day so far!

Here is our updated tracker - feel free to update and/or edit any info pertaining to your cycle!

ETA: Welcome to the board, @BabyBuckWay - I am sorry for your struggles with IF, but hope your stay here is short! I am sorry I haven't spoken to you yet - I don't know how I missed you!

As for your question on Letrozole, I have taken it the last two cycles for IUI and I can't say I experienced any noticeable side effects aside from the very first day I took it, I got a headache that was harsh, but brief. How did your ultrasound go last week? Have you already had the IUI? I haven't participated in IVF (yet), but I could see how your RE may not want you to produce as many eggs in a IUI cycle as they do with an IVF cycle. Since they aren't retrieved, and each one has the potential to be inseminated, I would think they are erring on the side of caution. (I know it's easy for us to want to produce more to up our chances of getting KU, but large quantity of follies in an IUI also ups the risk.)

  • @Bababatty I would totally put my foot down about waiting. Obviously I am not a medical professional, but common sense dictates that you want to have the best chance possible for conception and if you know the MFI is an issue and you are about to have it addressed, then why would the doctor want you to proceed?

I believe that sometimes the caps have to do with insurance, but I also think it has to do with statistics. (It's over my head, but basically, as I understand it, your odds for success greatly diminish if you are not successful after 3 or 6 tries.) My doc does everything in 3s or 6s. We are on 3s because of my age. We did 3 TI cycles before moving into IUI and this is our third and last of those.

Hopefully you will get some good info from the urologist and you can feel better about more IUIs! Keep us posted!

  • @mrsdaddario I'm so sorry about the BFN! Creepy Internet hugs to you. I hope you do something nice for yourself.

Thank you and @fivetimesnoluck also for thoughts on continuing the IUIs. I also thought it had a lot to do with the medications. I talked to DH and did put my foot down on continuing with IUIs until after he has taken the meds and we've done follow up tests early next year to see if they worked. So if this cycle is a bust, we'll just try on our own for a few cycles.
  • @mrsdaddario  So sorry about the negative.  Those days are always so hard for me so I'm hoping you get to spoil yourself tonight.

@LuluMurph  Welcome to the board!  Fx that your first IUI is a success!

@Bababatty  Sorry to hear about the issues with your husband's sperm.  I have seen a lot of people have a lot of success after seeing a urologist so I'm hoping the same for you!

@fivetimesnoluck  Glad to hear you made it through the hurricane safely.  How is your two week wait going so far?

@Sasha29 That’s awesome news that you responded better to the upped dose of letrozole.  This month the nurse told me that with letrozole that they like to see follies 23 or above.  I had never heard that before but that’s great news for your 25mm!

AFM, I went in yesterday (CD 15) and had two mature follies (22 and 27).  But my progesterone levels came back quite high so my doctor thought I was already starting to ovulate.  He had us trigger last night and then did the IUI this morning to hopefully not miss the ovulation.  I had what felt like ovulation cramps last night so I'm a little worried that the timing was off for the IUI.  We also hadn't BD in a few days so if I ovulated early, there's no real chance this cycle. Good news is that DH sperm count post wash was 60 million this time!  I was shocked.  Just hoping and praying there were some eggs in there for them to find!

  • @Katkirch thanks!  Question for you- my Dr. doesn't do any blood work other than the initial screening of levels, but it looks like you had it done post meds (assuming you're on meds).  Is that normal?

@LuluMurph  My doctor has me pee on an OPK first thing in the morning CD 10-14.  I'm supposed to go in the day I get a positive.  After 3 cycles, I never have gotten a positive so I go in on CD 15.  They always test my estradiol, progesterone, and LH and do the u/s.  I'm not sure what all they're looking for but I know they are looking for estradiol levels to be high.  Mine never are so they've had me come back the next day to repeat. Once they see my LH surge they've given up on my estradiol levels and had me trigger.

Not sure what others do but the blood tests are normal for me.

  • Hi there everyone, I've posted a little here and am jumping in again for October.

@mrsdaddario I'm so sorry about the negative beta.  Hugs, friend.

What is the thing you are most looking forward to doing this autumn?  I really like wearing scarves.  Is that weird?  I live in San Diego, so we don't have much cold weather, but I really like being able to snuggle up with sweaters and scarves.

  • Hi!!! @mrsdee15 - love scarfs as well so I guess I'm lucky I'm in Canada!

For anyone -I have a general question that may sound kinda funny but I'm new to IUI's and Meds - did anyone ever feel something around their ovaries during their Injectables?

Maybe it's the Endo/Endomitriomas I have (she said the I Injectables about make the Endo worse?) but I swear I feel something more than my normal pain. May just a bit paranoid of overstimulation, they won't do the IUI if I have more than two follicles. Sorry to be asking a funny question but it's kinda weird and has been happening all day.

  • @mrsdee15 TW Loss:  We will do one more after this one.  My RE normally only does 3, but with the first IUI resulting in loss, he started the count over.  With the holidays in December, we would likely finish any remaining testing during that month, and start IVF in January.  I'm just hoping this IUI or the next will work and we won't have to move to that.

@JWatt5 I don't do injectables, but I do get pain around my ovaries after I do the Ovidrel trigger shot.  It normally lasts for 2-3 days and then it's gone.  I hope you find some relief soon!

  • @Katkirch Thanks! TWW is going well - half way done and haven't had much time to ponder all the symptoms (or lack thereof). Too busy cleaning up and putting things back together! Next week will probably drag on for ages. Glad that you got in when you did! Hopefully the timing of the IUI was right on!

  • @LuluMurph - I was curious about your doctor's approach when I saw that you already have the date scheduled for your next IUI. I am definitely not a medical professional, but by hanging here and going through three IUIs, I would say that most REs monitor with an initial U/S to ensure that you have no cysts or other factors that would prevent you from being able to take the stimulants (in your case, the Letrozole). This is most often done on CD 3, it seems. Then we have a second U/S between CD 11 and 14 to determine the follie size and count and this is when the doctor typically makes the decision about when to trigger and schedule the procedure.

You're seeing an RE, right? I am not able to see signatures on mobile, so I don't know your history, but I can't imagine a good reason for the doctor to not perform the mid-cycle ultrasound. You can risk high order multiples if you have produced a lot of follies, or you could have a ovarian cyst (sign of being overstimulated), or you could be ovulating at a time other than what is assumed and the IUI could be pointless. Do you use OPKs or do you chart your temps? What was the timeline for your first IUI?

Of course not all doctors operate the same way, but I would be concerned about missing ovulation if they are just picking the procedure date based on typical ovulation schedules.

  • @Katkirch Hope your IUI timing was good! Sounds like some nice follies!

@mrsdee15 @ReesaAnne16 welcome! Sounds like we're cycle buddies, I also have an ultrasound next Friday with hopefully IUI shortly thereafter.

@fivetimesnoluck nice to be busy during your TWW, though I'd guess that's not the reason you would normally like to be busy  ;)
  • Thanks, @skysong113 - you're right, but at least it has kept me busy!

How are you doing?? Do you have a date for your IUI or did it already happen? Hope you have a great weekend!

  • @fivetimesnoluck I'm doing okay- work driving me nuts, but at least it's Friday! I have a follie check next Friday, IUI hopefully following shortly- currently taking letrozole. Going to see Noises Off this weekend, looking forward to that! Hope you have a good weekend too! When do you test?
  • edited October 2016
@skysong113 I have been testing the morning of my beta so that H and I know together before I go to the lab/we both go to work. That will be Thursday, 10/20. This time, just because I triggered a little later, the beta is on what would typically be CD 2 based on my last several cycles. So, if I still haven't started on 10/19, I will definitely be super anxious.....

Sounds like you have a fun weekend planned! I recall when my high school put on Noises Off! Funny!

Fingers crossed for some good, round follies!

  • I'm currently waiting on AF so we can start our second (and possibly last) injectable and IUI cycle. This last BFN hit me pretty hard, and though I promised H we would give it another try I just am not confident in it. Our insurance covers two more IUI cycles but I'm not sure if I have the heart to do the third. I feel at this point our only option is IVF. So naturally I am already looking forward to getting that ball rolling. So October could be our last IUI. If AF would hurry up and show her face, I'm guessing I'll have CD 3 baselines sometime next week. And IUI the week after.
  • @mrsdaddario - I'm sorry you're feeling this way. It's hard not knowing what the heck is going to work and what isn't going to. Hopefully AF shows soon and you can keep things moving along. *hugs*

AFM - appointment today showed that I have one follicle growing at a good pace (13mm). Is it bad I'm frustrated with that?? I made one on my own last month, I just really expected to hear that there was more than one with the injections. But one is better than none so, Next scan is CD 10/Monday - thinking IUI will be mid week.

  • @fivetimesnoluck OK, so I'm not crazy! Here's the quick rundown. This is my first IUI. We did an assisted home timed intercourse last month. I was on the low low dose Let with ovidrel. BFN

I went the other day for my baseline ultrasound and my RE already scheduled me for my 2nd US and IUI. Thought it was a little odd that he was comfortable scheduling that since he could be completely wrong with my ovulation. And he doesn't do any blood work after the initial carrier screening
  • @mrsdee15 you're right - which is what I was afraid of going in but seemed to have completely forgotten about that now. I should be much more grateful. Thank you for reminding me of this!
