Anyone else's lo still wake up constantly during the night to eat?! DS just hit 13 weeks & sleeps maybe 2 hours at a time during the night when he was at 4 or 5 a couple weeks ago. He is EBF.
Any tips for pumping bottles for babysitters when you EBF? I'm working from home so I'm not usually away from him even if I run errands because he just goes with me, but I've had a few days this week where I've had to be gone and leave him with grandma and I can't keep up with pumping bottles for those occasions. I have to wait until at least 2 hours after he eats and goes to bed for the night (which isn't until 11 most nights) and even then I can't get a full bottle unless I wait until 2 or 3 in the morning! I have to leave him with DH for most of this afternoon for a class I'm teaching and I'm freaking out because i only have 4 oz to leave for him. He usually eats 6 or more I think.

I read that most moms have the most milk in the morning hours between 2am and 5am.... Could you sleep a little then wake up to pump? I totally understand your worry but your son will be fine!!! My son is refusing bottles and a lactation consultant told me that the hospital pediatricians believe babies can go up to 15 hours without eating at all before they start to worry. Also you could try pumping one boob while he's eating on the other. This is a bit hard to coordinate but I've gotten more milk this way. Apparently hormones help more milk to be released. Good luck with your class and baby @winnie1122
@winnie1122 I got a suction pump off of Amazon for like 14 bucks. It's way easier to use for pumping one side while he eats on the other. I can usually get between 1 and 3 oz per feeding that way. I prefer it because then I don't have to try and time it with his feedings or take the extra time.
@erinjay1015 yes. My LO is 12 weeks and we are still up every two hours. The most I've ever gotten in the night is 3.5, and that is rare. No advice to give from me but I feel your pain.

My daughter is 11 weeks and still nursing every 2 hours. And she goes 5-6 hour stretches at night. I find that I pump the most ounces first thing in the morning. So I pump one side and nurse her on the other. Not at the same time though they, because I'm just not that coordinated. I read that if the breast is emptied, it only takes about an hour to fill back up. So unless she's cluster feeding, I don't worry about her not getting enough.
@erinjay1015 we were doing every 2 hours to eat until I got the zen Swaddle. Then we got 3-4 hours. Now at 13 weeks, I Swaddle him with one arm out and I've gotten 4-5hr stretches at night.
Any tips on getting LO to focus while nursing? He's starting to be interested in a lot more, which is awesome, but his feedings are taking forever because he keeps popping himself off...it's really painful. I've had to go back to two handed feeding and force his head still.
LO is 12 weeks this week and the last few days has really struggled breast feeding all of a sudden. She's obsessed with her hands in her mouth and they keep getting in her way while she's eating and she will pull off all frustrated then start rooting again and then pull off mad again, so on and so on.... after awhile I just sit her up and give her a pacifier if she wants it because I kinda think she just wants to suck without having to handle a let down. Anyone else have babies that are struggling with feeding at this age? We EBF and have been doing very well with it. I'm hoping it's just an off week.... advice? any light at the end of this tunnel?
@FTM53 I will have to check out that swaddle! My son never cared to be swaddled before, but one thing I've learned is that he is ever changing in his demands!
He gets distracted by his dad's voice or if a new person looks at him so I just ask my family to stay away while nursing. I've also noticed that if he's getting easily distracted he's usually just using me as a play thing anyway so I sit him up & play for a few minutes & try again. Is there any type of motion your son likes? I pat my son's back or butt when feeding, which I'm not sure if it helps but it definitely doesn't hinder his focus.
I'm dealing with a distracted nurser too right now and it hurts! I went back to my LC for it. She said to try different positions (football hold, upright, baby and mom belly to belly while mom reclines). Also to try to make sure nothing else is going on in the same room at the time, even turning off the tv. None of these things helped a great deal. The only thing that seems to work is nursing when baby is drowsy.
I got scolded for feeding my baby too often st the breast today st two month apt he's like he needs to go 3-4 hours everytime! I'm struggling w this grr
@john5111 They scolded you?! At 13 weeks, my LO still eats every 2 hours. I'd call BS and ignore them on that. BM goes through babies much more frequently and easily than Formula. You know your baby best. If he's hungry...I say feed him!
@john5111 I use Mommy's Bliss and it's done wonders. Saw improvement within 24 hours.
Chose them them because it is the probiotic and sunflower oil as a carrier, nothing else. I keep it right next to his vitamin So I remember to give them both daily.
Gerber makes one, but it has a bunch of preservatives and garbage in it. You can also get some in the refrigerator section of Whole Foods/fresh market type stores. I've heard these are better because they are ultra live probiotics, but you need to keep them in the fridge and I believe they go bad.
My son is getting fussier with feedings. Lately he starts his feed normally but after a few minutes, he moves his head down and back, taking my nipple with him. At first I thought milk was no longer coming out but when I lean in close, I hear him swallowing. Then I thought he might be getting squirmy to burp. Tried that with no luck. Any other babies doing this? Thoughts on why? Advice is welcome!
@austinjl My little guy does this too. Sometimes he does need to burp and that works and sometimes he just fusses and shakes his head until he doesn't seem hungry anymore and I get sick of being a chew toy and pop him off. I heard somewhere that it has something to do with your let down slowing down and in turning your nipple into a "straw" they're able to get more?
@austinjl yep mine does this all the time. Not sure why but sometimes walking around while nursing helps calm him, if you can pull it off. For my LO it distracts him enough that he calms down!
@austinjl my LO has started this after leap 3. Now that he can see further and track things better, he seems to get distracted and is like "nurse, nurse, nurse, 'HEY! What's rhat interesting thing over ther?!'" And away goes my nipple. A friend calls it "nip-lash". It sucks.
My son has been doing this on and off for the last week or 2 as well! He should b starting leap 3 in a couple of days! Sometimes i switch breasts when he starts to pull my nipple/or if he is getting really fidgety!
Took P to the docs this morning because he had several diapers with blood in them over the last few days. Apparently he's allergic to the dairy in my diet, so I have to go dairy free as long as I breastfeed. Which is not going to be easy for me...ha. But I guess there's a chance he'll grow out of it, which I'm hoping for. Food allergies are my nightmare! Glad it wasn't worse though, finding blood in his diapers really freaked me out!

@winnie1122- sorry you have to go through that! DD1 was allergic to dairy too. Her pedi said 80% of kids outgrow it by 2 years old. I was told to try dairy every 3 months. At 6 months she cried for 4 hours so I continued no dairy. At 9 months she was perfectly fine! I hope your LO outgrows it quickly. I think being dairy free helped me drop all my baby weight quickly. FYI- the organic section has lots of dairy-free chocolate bars
@holly142 Did you cut it completely down to any product with a hint of dairy or just kick out the dairy heavy things like milk (duh) , yogurt, cheese, etc? He never acted super uncomfortable, he just had the early symptoms of eczema and then the blood in his diaper. So without those I don't know if I would have even suspected an issue!

@winnie1122 I had the same problem with LO at 3 weeks. 5 weeks of no dairy at all and she didn't improve. We also tried cutting out eggs, wheat, nuts and soy and nothing made it better. I ended up switching her to similac alimentum and that still didn't help. We're on Neocate now which has no dairy at all and finally no blood and happy baby. She has the worst case possible with dairy. I hope she outgrows it too because I can't imagine her having to avoid dairy her entire life. I did cut out every little bit of dairy. No creamer in my coffee or sprinkles of parmesan on my pasta.
@babycakesday Ugh, good to know the worst case scenario but sorry you had to deal with all of that! I hope we all have allergy free babies eventually! So far I've cut it out completely, but I'm just afraid I'll slip up and ruin it.

@winnie1122- at first I cut out all the big stuff. DD was better but not great, so I cut out all dairy. I didn't even eat things that were cooked in butter. It was a little awkward eating at other people's homes because I was afraid of dairy, but overall it wasn't bad.
@winnie1122 my guy is allergic to dairy too! We had consistently green diapers and then some with blood. I cut out dairy completely, no butter, not even things with "hidden dairy" like whey or casein. It took several weeks but he is definitely improving. Most of his poop is yellow now. I was told it could take a month or more to completely clear both of our systems.
It is hard but I've built an arsenal of "safe foods" and put everything I can't eat on one shelf in the fridge so I dont even look at it. Daiya shredded cheese isn't bad, Luna and Larry's Coconut ice cream is delicious, dairy-free Ben & Jerry's is amazing, Lara Bars are a great snack!
@stellaluna14 Good to know! I did get some of that non-dairy Ben & Jerry's to soften the blow...lol. I'm realizing how much dairy I really did eat, bleh.

My sister told me E drank 7 ounces at her last feeding. I was really really shocked. But then she spit up for the next 3 hours and barely breastfed before bedtime. Is it harder for them to know when to stop with a bottle??
Is she doing paced bottle feeding? Look up on Kelly mom.com if you aren't familiar with it. I go to a breastfeeding support group and the LC said babies will just reflexively suck if they are fed in reclined position. She also said babies take 2-5 ounces of breastmilk and that doesn't change over time because the breastmilk itself changes to meet baby's needs.
