I'm exclusively pumping and DD is taking 4.5 oz at a time of breast milk only. I'd like to buy more bottles but I don't know if I should buy more 5 oz bottles or the 8 oz ones. Do breastfed babies drink that much or do they typically stay around 4-5 oz? I know the composition of milk changes to meet their needs but I'm not sure if the volume changes too. She's 8 weeks old.
@sboston06 I wondered the same thing... We have the LifeFactory 4 oz glass bottles and I am wondering if I should buy some 9 oz too... So far when E needs more milk we just refill it as needed but maybe I need bigger ones?
@karabby FYI if you are interested, they make coolers to ship ice cream in to stay frozen. I work in the chocolate industry so we ship a lot of stuff in the middle of the summer and can't have it melt.
It depends on the child. My son pushed his bottles down to 3 a day, so while he was at 27-28 oz a day, he was eating 8-9 oz each bottle. That was 100% BM, and he kept it up until about 9 months when he started to prefer solids.

Don't buy anymore 4 oz bottles!! My LO is taking at least 6 oz each feeding and he's only 8 weeks. He's on the bigger side, but definitely sucking it down!
We came down to visit my in-laws for the weekend. In my brilliance, I didn't bring my electric pump. Out of desperation and pain, I went to target and bought a hand pump. 5 minutes later I filed a 6oz bottle...from one side. Ouch
Anyone gone on mini pill? Did u notice a decrease in milk supply? I am debating starting it but scared it will dec my supply. With my first I got an iud and noticed no change but I hated having the thing and wanted to not have one this time
@john5111 I don't have anything helpful to contribute, but can I ask what it was you didn't like about having an IUD? I originally planned on taking the mini pill, but due to some changes I had to make in my life after my son was born, I don't see any more children in my future & I've been thinking about scheduling an appointment to get mirena. I'm not on any form of birth control right now but would like to start something for peace of mind just in case...
any other mamas who had/have an IUD, please feel free to contribute what you've liked/disliked about your own experience with them too!
Mine told me to add oatmeal cereal to his breast milk at 4 weeks. He was spitting up bad/eating every 2 hours and still seeming hungry. It helped a lot. Now that we transitioned to formula I get the Similac Spit-Up formula and it has rice cereal added. I wish they used oatmeal though. Rice has arsenic in it. I know I'm alive and so are hundreds of millions of other people that eat rice, but I'd prefer him to get oatmeal.
@jjtruffles- I had the Mirena x 2 (total of eight years) and loved it - I have an appt on the 4th for another one
the initial insertion is painful with some cramping afterwards, and you may feel the strings during sex for a few weeks until they soften. Then, I never noticed it again. I was one of the lucky ones that had my period go completely away too ☺️
I sucked at taking the pill so the mini pill is definitely not an option since you have to take it at almost the exact same time every day.
I spotted after for quite a bit then no period but then randomly would have blood run out when I'd stand up I felt like it made me moody and no sex drive when I had it out I bled worse than after giving birth so I don't want one again
I'm on the mini pill. I started taking it like 2 weeks after I had LO. I didn't notice a change in my supply but I was already starting out low. Also, I haven't gotten a period yet.

I've been on it for almost 2 months and my supply has been fine

I had Mirena put in at my 6 week PP appointment. It was just a little uncomfortable but felt way better being inserted right after having a baby than it did when I got my Paraguard put in 10 years ago. I have not noticed any supply issues with my milk. I have been spotting on/off the last few weeks, that's slightly annoying, but nothing heavy. As mentioned sometimes the strings can be felt by your husband. They'll soften up, or my OB, will trim them down. Overall no complaints. And I love the peace of mind and not having to remember to take a pill.
@jjtruffles- I had the Mirena for 1 1/2 years between DD and DD2 and loved it. It was uncomfortable going in but didn't hurt at all when taken out. About 40 % of people on it never get periods. I was one of those lucky ones!
We are currently using condoms until DH gets snipped next month. So no more birth control for me!
@jjtruffles - I had MIRENA put in 2 weeks ago. My SIL is a OB/GYN and she recommended it as a mindless way to handle BC. The insertion wasn't bad, just a little crampy afterward for a few hours. I've had some spotting on and off and my supply has been unaffected! I love that I don't have to worry about birth control until I'm ready to have it out.
@jjtruffles I had a Mirena put in at 6 weeks PP. My midwife had me hold baby while she inserted it as a distraction and I honestly hardly felt a thing. Tiny bit of cramping after. I started my period a few days later, it lasted about a week and since then it appears to have gone away all together (I'm 12.5 weeks PP now). I can't tell it's there!
I have hated my mirena so far. The insertion wasn't bad but I had it put in 8/23 and I am STILL needing a tampon most of the time, which can be normal for some. I have a follow up appointment Monday about it to get things checked though.
@Stellalluna posted a lactation smoothie recipe, and I send her all the creepy interent hugs for it lol Lincoln and I ended up with thrush (nipple thrush is no joke ladies! Yikes) so his intake dropped, and in return so did my supply. It got to the point where I was having to supplement 1 feeding at night (around 8 or so) with formula, just to have enough milk. I wasn't even leaking at any time, any more. After 2 days of making this smoothie, I was able to catch 1oz (in a bottle, from leaking) and hand express another 1/2 - 1oz (before deciding to stop), while he fed off the other side. I definitely have much more milk than I did (he just started his thrush meds today so I know that isn't the cause of the increase). And I didn't even add the brewer's yeast (couldn't find it) so I can't imagine how much more that could possibly help. I did add chocolate to it, because who doesn't love chocolate lol I think it makes it taste even better.
I know we discussed this awhile back, but for some of you who were having trouble weaning from the nipple shield like I was earlier on, I tried again this week and it worked! I don't know if he just learned to latch better after using the shield for so long or what, but the transition has been surprisingly smooth. I thought I was doomed to need it forever.

I really thought after the "hard" part of learning how to breastfeed improved, I would start to enjoy it. Fourteen weeks in and I do not like breastfeeding. Anybody else? I guess it's not required that I like it for me to continue but I'm just a bit bummed about it. My son enjoys it so that's most important.
@austinjl I'm with you on that! It's like being pregnant...I'm glad I'm able to but ready to be done with it when it's time. Very glad it got easier though, the first 2 months were rough.

@austinjl I find myself dreading it when two hours has gone by, and counting down the seconds til DS is finished. Love the benefits though, so I'm going to try and keep it up as long as possible. One feeding at a time... ugh!
I love breast feeding but my LO hates it. OK he doesn't hate it - but he gets super fussy and frustrated and flails around/grunts/won't finish a feeding sometimes and I have no idea why. Which makes me super frustrated. Why can't you just sit and enjoy the boob!
Hi mamas! My LO is 12 weeks old tomorrow, and as of the last week or so has been SO distracted and sometimes fussy when eating. We EBF, and have failed at trying to get him to take a bottle, though we try at least once a day. I am wondering if trying to force the bottle (even though he won't drink it) has caused confusion. He is generally happy between feedings, though he is eating less during feedings and feeding more frequently. I'm not sure what to do....I'd love for him to be able to take a bottle so that dad can watch him and have that bonding time, but I don't want to cause any trouble with breastfeeding. Any thoughts ? Thanks!
@knottie have you tried different bottles? My Li wouldn't take a few different types in the beginning but loved the mam bottles so now that's what we use. She also hates when the milk is cold so we have to make it room temp. Just to complicate matters...there are a few reasons your lo may not like his bottle!
@kellz14 My older DS was like that. He would flail and scream every time I tried to latch him. Then he would pop off and on (no tongue or lip tie) and would only take an ounce or two at a feeding. I think he was just so curious and wanted to look at everything other than my boob. It was VERY frustrating. Just know your LO isn't the only one that hates it. PS he did have acid reflux... but I don't think this was why he didn't like nursing. It might be worth asking your ped about though.
My little guy was born 11 lb 15 oz... i know.. its NOT a typo! Anyhoo, he eats every three hours about 5-6 oz a time. I pump while at work but I only get 2-2.5 oz each pump so he gets formula as well. We havent had any issues with him, other than I can't keep up with his feeding needs. He will be 12 weeks this Saturday. When he sleeps he will go 4-5 hours without a bottle, the longest was 9 hours!
M is still eating every 2 as well. Sometimes she'll stretch it to 3 but not often. She does give me a 6 hour stretch at night though, and I'm thankful for that! @shaylalr
