Our A/S is on Monday. I hope that'll help us get serious about talking about names. This is #3, so we're a little too chill this time around. We have no names, and have bought nothing.
Found out we're having a girl, and we really like Clara for her first name. We're having trouble deciding between Rey, Grace, and Dianne for a middle name. Dianne is my mom's and my middle name, so that's my obvious choice, but DH isn't crazy about it.
So happy we settled on a first name for our little boy. We have decided on Samuel which was my favorite name the first time around but we ended up with Peter for DS instead.
Now for the middle name. My Dad passed away in 2015 and his name was Brian, My husbands Grandfather is Robert and I just plain like the MN James. I obviously would love to honor my Dad but I don't know if I like the way Brian sounds as the MN.

I vote Dianne. I think passing on family names feels more special unless you absolutely love one of your other middle name choices.
(And Rey feels too Star Wars trendy to pair with Clara to me).
We're going with Michael Keith ( 3rd gen FN Michael on Dad's side and 3rd gen MN Keith from my side)...we're just plagiarising. Nicknames are rough, Mike is grandpa's name, don't want son & dad to both be Michael, and hate Mikey. I kinda like Micah, just smashing the two names together. I'm hoping that a nickname spontaneously appears after birth like a rainbow so the poor kid doesn't end up 'hey you'
DH spent part of the weekend coming up with a list of comic book, movie, TV show names he likes. When he was done, I was able to veto ones I didn't like... But, I get the feeling he didn't actually take any of them off the list. He did self veto one after saying it out loud: Domino. I can't remember any of the others right now, but I feel like this is going to be an uphill battle.
@Lafreeman21 that's a lot of Michaels for one family. My uncles name is Brian and a cousin named his son Brian. Everyone still calls that kid Little Brian, even though he's in college now.
Are you considering naming him Michael but calling him something else entirely? Normally I'd think that's weird, but I understand wanting that family tradition.
A friend's son is (xyz) the third. They call him Trey, I guess in reference to being 3rd?
@FreshBakedBrownies@MrsDramaK I like both Trip and Trey pretty well ( hadn't heard trip before). I also thought about AJ, for almost junior. Husband is firmly in the call them both Michael club. I think that's a recipe to be solidly ignored for 18 years, lol.
We have 2 Jrs. in our family (my uncle and my cousin) they went by their middle name. My dad also goes by his middle name, I think just because he likes it better.
@MLRocha I feel you on Domino. For awhile DH was obsessed with "strong" names like Leonidis, Maximus, Achillis, etc. I won't name my kid after a tendon, and I used an awful lot of vetoes that day. Sorry husband, Thor just isn't going to happen either.
My dad is a 3rd and uses is first name. His dad went by their middle name & the grandfather had passed by the time my dad was born.
i agree with PP that Trip & Trey are common for 3rds and work well. I've also heard Chip & Skip for 3rds. Or just unrelated nicknames like Buddy, Max, and Bug.
@yagodevil I seriously went to bat for Achilles for a while, until DH finally convinced me it just didn't sound right with his last name. Sad day. I'm totally like your DH on this one. My list originally consisted of Leonidas, Achilles, Constantine, Lancelot, and Tristan.
@scifichick09 they don't sound great with our last name either, that was my main sticking point. Besides Achilles, all I can think of is the movie Troy and what if our child isn't as badass as Brad Pitt? It's a lot to live up to...and DH has needed to soften his expectations of having a son in that regards.
I'm going to mention Constantine and Lancelot to him though, because it's adorable when his eyes light up

Nicknames do just tend to develop over time and stick or not stick. I was in a playgroup when I was a kid and me and this other kid were Pookie and Bookie. And I grew out of Pookie so only like one person still calls me that, but literally everyone still calls him Bookie. I still cannot tell you how either of us got these nicknames but they stuck.
We finally had a name conversation last night! Because my fiancé was pretty buzzed and I thought I'd get some honest answers out of him . We didn't decide on anything but at least we had a conversation - here's as far as we got:
Girls: He hasn't really thought of any but likes my top two - Natalie and Mackenzie. No middle names as of yet.
Boys: I was terrified of telling him my absolute top 2 because I thought he'd veto them and I'd cry forever. Carson and Carter are not off the table! FX! We both like Jackson/Jaxson. But I do NOT like the nickname Jack so I wanted the 'x' spelling but he hates it . Boy's middle name will be Willis - I don't care for it at all but it means a lot to him because it is a family name. We are in a battle because he likes extremely common names (Kyle, Kevin) and I would like something a LITTLE less...everywhere.
Hahah okay. I was thinking about the first name start with "D" tradition. I have a friend who's family does that and his (married) brother's name is Dane.

@spicyweiner Eleanor is my favorite girl name! Our last name starts with E also, and for some reason I am digging the double-E thing. I also like Eliza and Eloise, though Eliza is my niece's middle name - is that weird?
We are waiting until we find out the sex to really start in on names, but so far, here are my favorites:
Boy: Harold Theodore August Arthur Felix
Girl: Eleanor Eliza Eloise Clara Evelyn
If it's a boy, I want to give him an uncommon, kind of badass-sounding middle name. Like Axel or Rex. Or Duke, after our cat. For a girl, the middle name would likely be Sue, which is MIL's middle name. This is actually at my insistence, not H's. We are both close to my MIL, and she has done so much for us in so many ways, and I want to honor her. But not a huge fan of her or my mom's first names - both VERY 1950's. So middle name it is.
We are having hell with names. We have had a favorite boy name for years, Major.
It's now in the top 300 and that's a bit too popular for me. I know this will sound crazy to some, but I feel like a name like Major should be fairly rare, not 1000 boys a year. We still really love it so there is a chance we stick with it. Everything else we come up with we like, but not nearly as much.
It doesn't help that the rapper T.I. has a son named Major and they are on a tv show.

It's #360, so really not too bad. If you like it - go with it. FWIW DD1's name has been in the 900's and DD2's name in the 200-300's and I've met 2 others with DD1's name and zero of DD2's name.

So I thought we liked Phoebe Marie for our girl's name but H mentioned how much he really likes Anna (anne-ah). So Anna Marie long-3-syllable-dutch-last-name.
I'm worried that there will be too much A's in our family. I'm April our son is Augustus and then Anna. This would be completely coincidence, but is it too much?
And I just realized that she would have my exact initials too.....
@Kashy17 I love both of the names Phoebe & Anna! You might have three A's but they are all different sounds (at least with my accent) so that seems okay to me. I know siblings that are Phoebe & Felix and that is way too similar for my taste even though the letters are different, they are pronounced Fee-bee & Fee-licks.
So, I like to read the current months BMBs every so often to read the birth stories and see the cute babies.
This brings me to the point that I'm no longer the ultimate fangirl, because somebody in Sept. gave their son the MN Samwise. She clearly beats me for that title!
@krob I'd be concerned about nicknames with Major and I agree with Spicy, I think of the military-- if he is in trouble are you gonna call him Private? (joke!)
But I wouldn't worry too much about where the name is on the list if you love it.

Whilst not quite the same level as naming a child samwise, big GoT fans here & we're going to call our little girl Arya

Sigh. I am JEALOUS. Since our first pregnancy I've begged my husband to get on board with Samwise. I feel like it isn't *that* crazy of a name and Samwise is a great role model! He is selfless and kind and steadfast... He showed a ton of bravery and Frodo could NOT have done it without him.

Yeah i assume Major would be weird for a lot of people. For some reason i don't think military at all. Maybe b/c i know a couple of major's. they are both in their late 30's/40's.
What sort of nicknames would you think would come of it?
