Re: Names

  • I feel like Violet Olivia and Hazel Elizabeth both make more sense as a sibset. Maybe it's the V's and O's then the A's and Z's.....

  • It was brought to our attention last night that my husbands entire side of the family will be saying our sons name in Spanish..so we need to consider how the name we choose sounds in Spanish....which makes picking a name THAT much more difficult. :/

We liked Judah...but then his cousin said it in Spanish and we were like "Nope". Names are hard.

My friend had that issue, so she chose names that wouldn't/ couldn't change in Spanish.
    Mason and Hunter.
  • @scifichick09  Oh yes.  My mom is English and my dad is from Wisconsin; they tried to find names that didn't sound too different with those accents.  They were only moderately successful, especially with my name (which is too unique to share here) but I never minded!

At least the internet has been invented and you can look at lovely lists of bilingual names!

  • @scifichick09 I love the name Javier, but just can't use it. We have no Spanish heritage and my husband hates it anyhow. But you could use it! I could live vicariously through you & your Spanish speaking relatives would have no problems! :)

  • So...... I've never really thought about boy names. Turns out my husband has and feels strongly about one particular name. But my sister (21, in college, no boyfriend) has already decided that she's having two boys and a girl and one of her future/imaginary boy names happens to be the name my husband likes.... We find out in a  few weeks what we're having and hopefully it's a girl but I just don't know what to do..
I tried telling him I can't take my sister's name but he says that's not her name, it's his. I even had a dream last night that they were fighting about it and I was sitting back crying and eating ice cream.
  • @Kaylea31 will you announce the name ahead of time? Because maybe just warn her that you let DH pick the boy name and it's one that you think is on her list?  My cousin "claimed" Mason a few years ago & now that she's pregnant, isn't going to use it. It didn't interrupt anyone's naming plans in the meantime, but dibs on names are inherently rude IMO.
  • Any thoughts on the name Sophie?  Both my husband and I love it, goes with our french last name, is a name in my husband's family, and I think it is cute and chic.  But Sophia/Sofia is so popular and Sophie is close to that so I'm hesitating... honest thoughts?
  • I love Sophie!

  • I love Sophie. We were thinking about it too but also had the same reservations.
  • You're right on both accounts - Sophie is both very cute and very popular.  Only you can decide how comfortable you are with the popularity.

@kaylea31 my bestie loves the name Henry for a boy. has told everyone since she was 17 that her boy will be named Henry. she is 29 now, has no kids and 3 of her friends named their son Henry. She was pissed for about 30 seconds. then she got over it. hopefully your sister will do the same thing. agree with PPs, you can't dibs a name.

I hate people who steal my names.  Your her sister, I don't think you should do it. If you were like a distant cousin, I wouldn't care.

  • My husband vetoed Maelle tonight. I knew he would but I was still sad. That's been my #1 pick since before the BFP.
  • Yep our best friends who are struggling with IF have the name Anwyn picked out for a girl. We really liked Anya but are backing off. I think it's a case by case situation

  • Anwyn??
Maybe Anwen. It's a traditional Welsh name. His dad was a welsh immigrant and that was they name they picked out for him if he were born without a penis.

@Kaylea31 my sister had the name Emily Elizabeth picked out for a girl since she was a kid. Everyone knew it. But she ended up never having a girl. But if someone had used the name before she knew she'd never have a girl, I can imagine she would've been really upset. Tough situation!

I like someone else's idea of preparing her for the possibility by telling her it's always been your husband's favorite name. You don't want to hurt her feelings but he loves the name and it's on your list.

    PS- what is the name???

Yep! Hey, maybe that's where she got the name from!

  • My aunt (my mums baby sister closer to my age than my mums) who has no children & has struggled with IF for a number of years declared recently that a girls name we had been thinking about is her girls name. On one hand im annoyed that we cant use it given that she was told over 3 years ago that there was only a 2% chance that she could have a child & has had failed ivf treatments so it is extremely unlikely that she will ever get the chance to use it. We could go for it but it would be a drama and not worth the hassle. And on the other hand i know how difficult it has been for her to watch all her neices and nephews having children over the past number of years when she has stuggled with IF and i feel like a complete b***h for even being remotely annoyed about it when im lucky enough to be pregnant when she has stuggled so much.

also what swear words are we allowed to use here cause i swear a lot irl & generally type how i talk?
  • Speaking of Emily...my daughter has a girl in her class at school with the name "Emma Lee" it drives me nuts just thinking about it! No. Just no.
  • Ok so we decided on Chloe, but are having tons of trouble with a middle name. People have suggested Chloe Grace, but H says it is too southern sounding. Any suggestions?
  • Chloe Olivia
  • I have a Chloe Elizabeth. I also liked Chloe Jane, Chloe Elise, and Chloe Paige.

  • So we've basically decided on Wesley, most likely he will go by "Wes". (My dad and grandfathers middle name). Any middle name suggestions?
  • @L Jane
What kind of names do you like? And how many syllables to your last name?

  • @Ljane I have 2 Wesley Allens in my family. I also like Wesley James or Wesley Owen!

@L Jane Wesley is great because it'll sound good whether you keep the middle name classic or even go more modern, like Wesley Emmett, Wesley Carter, Wesley Eli, Wesley Kingston, Wesley Cole...

  • For the record, I love all of the beautiful girl names, seriously the last 2-3 pages are filled with pretty timeless names, and I'm drooling!!

I'm at a dead end with boy names. My husband is the pickiest man when it comes to names. We're trying to stick with family names for middle names like we did with our first, and they consist of: Lee, Scott, James, Wyatt (apparently we're all very southern). I'm waiting to find out H's grandfather's names to add to the list...
    DS #1 is Marshall Evans
We're thinking of the name Jackson Lee for this babe, but I don't know. We like names that aren't as common, and Jackson has been sooooo popular over the last few years. H previously vetoed Jackson with our first son, but now likes it and wants to call our second son Jack-Jack. Yes, like in The Incredibles. Every other names has been "No", except for Bryer Scott. I liked Bryer Scott, until family compared it to ice cream.

  • Thanks for all the recs guys!! Our last name is 2 syllables and starts with an R. It was crazy how easily my husband and I decided on Wesley, because deciding on our older sons name took forever. Lol.
