Oops I never posted my stash shot! Here is all of the sewing (and purchasing) completed! NB + OS prefolds with covers, pockets, and wipes- hoping to report back on how these are working out super soon! We have 0 disposables so it's gonna be ride or die!!!
I need to post my stash too, but I notice some familiar prints in some of your ladies' pics! I washed everything together (inserts out of pockets) and only washed natural fiber inserts more than once. Don't use fabric softener as it will cause absorbency issues later with the inserts I've been told. Also, check your water hardness because you may need to use a water softener to prevent mineral build up which causes stink later! Any of you ladies doing cloth for a second time have any other helpful hints? I've just been reading A LOT as to prevent as many issues coming up later as possible. I have some disposables to get through the first week and then we are going to prefolds, fsts, and covers until he or she is big enough for the OS. I'm excited to pre-stuff, but I'm worried I may have to use different inserts than I stuffed with depending on baby and then have to re-stuff everything...so I haven't stuffed yet!
For those that have started washing your cloth, how much soap are you using? I bought tide orginal powder and that scoop is huge! Are you doing a pre wash cycle with soap? If so, how much in that too? Or just going straight to a regular wash?
@LDSJM123 we use the All free and clear powder soap. I do a short wash on cold with a little less than half a scoop, then regular hot cycle with the same amount of soap. Seems to work pretty well so far!

Tide powder is great for cloth as long as no one has a sensitivity to it (I use it) ...if you are just prepping you can do a regular wash. Once they are being used it depends on your machine, but it's usually line 1-2 for prewash on cold and then line 4-5 for main wash on any temp.
Thanks ladies! The lady at the cloth diaper store recommends washing all cycles on cold as not to "shock" the fabric and elastic from going to warm/hot to cold and back again. Which makes total sense to me. So crazy how there are so many different ideas. Suppose it's just like parenting, we'll figure out what works for us.
Ive been making my own detergent for years and only use 1-2 tablespoons per load. So to see that giant scoop, I was blown away.
@LDSJM123 I've been washing them with Mrs Meyer's concentrate, just the recommended amount for a load. I've been doing a cold pre-rinse and then washing them on hot.
I've been using 365 free and clear regular powder detergent, cold, extra rinse cycle. It works great and we started cloth from birth and had no trouble with meconium staining. Only one stain so far and it is pee on micro suede- going to sun that one and see if it'll come out. Wondering if micro suede is just going to have more issues than other pocket interiors... PS my newborn covers were all too small! Newborn pockets are great, but switched to OS covers for prefolds from day 1
Time for a check in and update! I think everyone has had their baby.
We waited 1 week to start cloth. We were using newborn fitteds and thirty size 1 covers. My husband HATED how wet our daughters skin felt. The fitteds don't wick the moisture away. So he requested we not use those. I have a handful of NB AIO's, but our kiddos thighs are too skinny for them! So when she chubs up a bit, we'll give those a try. Anyone have suggestions on wicks away moisture?
We were open to not liking cloth, but I'd really love to find some that my husband likes. Both for cost savings and the environment.
I am currently using disposables until DS is big enough to fit into cloth. He's such a little peanut. However with the amount of garbage we take out now, I'm really seeing the environmental benefits of the cloth more and more.
I'm also on disposables right now. We received a ton at our baby shower of newborn diapers so we plan on going through them before starting our cloth. Plus LO is 19 inches long but only weighed 5lbs so she has super skinny legs. Definitely needs a little more chunk before her thighs fit nicely in the cloth.
We've been doing cloth since day 1! M was born 7lbs and 20 inches with pretty skinny legs but we haven't had any fit issues. Mostly we've been using prefolds with a variety of covers. We also have a handful of AIOs, a few bum genius and a few Diaper Rite (which I actually preferred over the bum genius).
We just started yesterday! We had one accident. I didn't tighten the snaps enough because I was worried it would be too tight and bug her. She doesn't have very chunky thighs at 5 weeks but they work well now. We are using cotton inserts with flip covers. She doesn't seem too wet from them, but it doesn't get rid of all of the moisture.
We've done cloth since birth but I have a pretty big NB stash. I use prefolds with covers (homemade) and our 2 snappi's. DH hates prefolds so he has his own collection of NB pockets- Alva and some FuziBunz from when they were doing clearance sales plus a couple homemade. The last few days baby has been fitting into OS so I'm testing out what fits first. We have 2 Diaperrite and 1 Flip cover that fit now. Also found our 2 Bumgenuis pockets fit sooner than any other brand pocket. Laundry has been okay- one extra load of diapers per day. Using coconut oil from the kitchen as diaper rash cream, old pillow cases as extra wet bags, and homemade scrap cloth wipes with a little water and witch hazel to wet them. Since he was born $0 spent! Hooray!
What's everyone's favorite diaper for overnight? M is a heavy wetter it would seem so he soaks through prefolds and wakes up instantly. I've been doing all in one's with extra inserts lately and it seems to help but I don't know if there's some secret combo I should be trying.
We're also in disposables overnight but cloth all day. It was tricky since my newborn diapers are prefolds and covers. I only got 3 "newborn" covers but 6 more size 1 thinking they were the same. Nope. The size 1 was too big for a while but now they all fit and the newborn covers will be too small soon! I find I'm skipping the snappi most of the time and they work just as well without it. Today I tried on a one size pocket snapped to the smallest size and it's way too big so we will stick to just prefolds for a while.
Hey guys, jumping on the cloth train. Bought a bg free time and 5.0 to try, but wondering if anyone uses fuzzibunz as they're pretty cheap at Costco. Overall, anyone have any preferences yet?
@mnkenned Most of my stash is from fuzzibunz. I love them and the costco deal is spectacular. They come with everything you need and the quality is great.
@mnkenned We had 2 FuziBunz newborn and now we have 3 FuziBunz small OS- they're great quality and we love them! I'd recommend them for sure. Even without a double gusset we've never had a leg hole leak.
I wash mine every two days. I don't soak them because her poop is soluble and easily washed out. I do a cold wash first with half detergent and then a hot wash with full detergent and a cold rinse.
I have enough diapers to go 4-5 days but I'm noticing stains, that thankfully come out with some sunning. So now I'm going every 2-3 days. I haven't started rinsing them yet, just throwing the dirty diaper in the wet bag. (Exclusively breastfed) I do a prewash cycle with half the amount of soap, followed by a heavy soiled wash with full amount of soap, followed by an extra rinse. I do everything in cold water.
DS is still so tiny that our cloth diapers don't fit right. We tried to transition last week but holy blowouts. He needs to chunk up a bit before I'll be comfortable letting him always be in them. I'm using Honest Company diapers for now so i don't feel like I'm totally ruining the environment. But I'm eager to dig into the cloth full time. If my husband and I have another child someday I'm going to invest in smaller sizes rather than one size fits all. Because they definitely don't lol
We mostly have fitteds with covers for our newborn stash, but I do have a handful of newborn BG AIO's. Even those Just started fitting my daughters tiny thighs in the last week or so. And she'll be 7 weeks tomorrow. I can't even imagine how big one size would be! @DachshundMomma

They button in a way that allows them to be smaller but he's just too small right now. I'm hoping by the end of the month he'll fit. We just got out of newborn clothes and he's 5 weeks old. You'd think with all of the feeding he does he'd be huge but nope lol.
Anyone having trouble with diaper rash? She just starting getting it this week. I'm not sure why!
We have a rash (bad!) right now too! I'm currently stripping all the cloth in case it's a yeast rash. I've ruled out ammonia burn because the diapers don't smell like ammonia when they are dirty. I tried coconut oil and burts bees ointment, to no avail, before switching to disposables so I could try some not cloth friendly ointments. I didn't want to mess with using liners. I'm giving her toosh 24 more hours and then I'll be scheduling a doctors appointment.
I'm doing the same thing! It started as a tiny spot, but I opened her diaper this morning and it is horrible! It's definitely not ammonia for us either. I'm trying coconut oil right now. I hope the other creams clear it up for you!!
M's look like popped blisters or the area under a scab that's been picked. And as of the last diaper change, they're bleeding a tiny bit. I feel so bad Good luck to you guys too!
@DachshundMomma - LO is size 1 in disposables, and the bg AIOs are way too big still. My friend suggested prefolds and they're a lot better fit. I ordered a pack of 6 osocozy prefolds and two thirsties covers (you could get away with one) to try out and it's like $25 on amazon. I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twcliGrpgnI which helped my confusion a ton about prefolds.
We are doing our diaper laundry every day. We have enough we could go longer but the diaper pail fills up by the end of the first day so it just seems easier. We dont pre-rinse since the poop is still water soluble. We do a short wash on cold/heavy soil and then a hot wash/cold rinse heavy soil load.
I finally went through all the disposable diapers so we started using the cloth diapers last night. They're definitely bulkier than the disposables, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I plan on doing ny first wash tonight.
Hows it going for everyone? What's working? What's not working? Likes/dislikes?
We are using 100% disposables. My husband was not a fan of how the prefolds/fitteds and covers worked. I have an entire stash of pockets/AIO's that still are a bit too big on M, but when they fit, I plan to try again. Really hoping to convert him, I love cloth.
It's been 75% reusable for the past 2 months. We still have a box of size one disposables that was given to us at our baby shower that I am trying to go through. I am having trouble with the overnight. I prefer the disposables since she stays dry. The few times I've used the reusable, she ends up leaking through. have y'all found any solutions that work overnight?
After much trial and error my current favorites are the Fuzzibunz pockets! It's going good, we were doing mostly prefolds originally but M is such a heavy wetter that he was soaking through them like nobody's business! Now that he's big enough for the pockets we have gone with those most of the time (mix of fuzzibunz, Alva baby, kawaii baby, and bumgenius).
@babycakesday we struggled at first with the perfect nighttime combo too. We finally figured it out! Fuzzibunz pocket stuffed with two Alva baby soakers, one microfiber, one bamboo. This combo is what led to him sleeping basically through the night!

As for night solutions, we are just doing disposables. No shame. @stellaluna14
