Well I threw up this morning in the parking lot and then most of first period. So my administration knows. They were extremely supportive. Still feeling tired/blah. I'm so thankful it's Friday
Hi all! I'm a preschool teacher. I teach English, Math, and Science to 3, 4, and 5 year old Arab speakers. This year I'm teaching the 4-5 year olds. I'm pretty lucky and only have some light headed and indigestion. Nothing else so far so I haven't felt the need to tell anyone. My work BFF and very good friend outside work knows. If anything sets in, we have 2 teachers in the classroom so I should be alright if I do get morning-sickness ever. ETA: If i can keep it under wraps, I'll tell admin at the end of first trimester.
TTC1: May 2015

I teach high school science, mostly seniors. We were back for our workweek last week, and holy moly was I exhausted from working all day and chasing my one year old around all evening.
Kids start back on Monday. I'm nervous this year because I am teaching an extra class (like some other PPs have said, our school is waaayyyy over capacity), so I only have a prep period every other day. I also lead a curriculum development team AND I am a 'junior department chair' (my current DC is going to be promoted to admin next year, and I am being groomed to take their place), in addition to sponsoring a club and the soccer team (though their season is in the spring, so I may need to bow out of that for this year). AND I teach AP, so I'm worried about going on maternity leave a few weeks before the national exam...if this kid comes early, I might be screwed. Here's hoping I make it through this year with my sanity intact!
@SnarkasaurusRex, I also reach AP. Last time I went on maternity leave it was November through February and my school found a good job finding someone with experience teaching my subject area.
I am usually able to finish my AP content by late April, but we are getting a late start this year, so I am a little nervous. I am thinking that my district won't look as hard to find a long term sub with subject experience this time since it will only be for a few weeks before the AP exam.
I guess I will see how it goes and do my best to get through everything before baby arrives by cutting out some of the optional activities and projects that I usually do, which is a bummer because that's what makes the course more enjoyable for both myself and the students.
@SnarkasaurusRex - whoa. That is A LOT you have on your plate! We just finished our first week of school and I went to bed right after my 2 year old did! I was asleep by 8 every night. I highly recommend going to bed early! I will FX for you this school year!
@SnarkasaurusRex@chelle087 I teach an AP too - the plan was to not be pregnant for another month but... what are you gonna do!? I'm certainly not complaining! I really hope to finish the curriculum before baby comes along, but I'm very worried about the month before AP exams. We tend to NOT get very good long term subs - like, often they are just a warm body. I've really got to plan ahead to how I want to structure things so that kids can work pretty independently to review and prepare, but are still held accountable.
Hi Everyone! I teach 6th grade math and go back Tuesday for meetings... Kids start after Labor Day. I am super nervous to go back because I am super sick mostly all day. It's going to be very hard to keep a secret, and I don't know how I physically will survive without a nap or resting. I go to my first 8w appt on Monday(tomorrow) the day before I go back. If I'm this nervous about Meetings, teaching is even a scarier thought!
***This is cross-posted on another thread, but I'm hoping for good feedback from you girls. And ps, sorry it's a novel.
So, you all know I'm a food service director in a school district. I took over earlier this year as the interim director, had to fight to save the program (they were contemplating a management company), and was finally named the official director in May.......except I have not received my contract yet. I was told all summer that "it's with the town attorney" and then there wasn't a board of ed meeting in August, so no chance to approve the contracts, but we get them in September.
Okay.....so, I was told to carry on as if I have my contract. I worked a few days over the summer (not a year round employee) and was told that I work 10 days past the end of the school year and 10 days before the school year begins. I went back a week and a half ago, but because no contract I'm still submitting time sheets. I heard through the grapevine today (from a reliable source) that my supervisor freaked out on Friday, wanting to know "Why is she working?!", and that he refused to sign my timesheet. What in the ever-loving f*ck. Payroll pushed my hours through because they know I worked and deserve to get paid......but what do I do? Like I wasn't scared enough before about telling my boss that I'm pregnant, now I'm completely freaked out and pissed off.
First day of inservice today--and...yikes bikes!!! I am exhausted. I have not stopped going for 12hrs. Coming home to two needy toddlers and knowing that there is another set on the way gives me major anxiety. So nervous that I'm going break once I'm juggling four children and a classroom full of "my kids." Anyone other STM experiencing the nervousness of being able to juggle it all??
@java1982 I'm a FTM, but can totally relate on the exhaustion. We've had two, 13 hour days and I cannot feel my legs. Everyone is telling me how tired they are and I so badly want to say, but not as tired as first trimester tired! Good luck juggling t all mama, you'll do great!
I teach 4th grade and we started back Aug 9th! The beginning of the year is always exhausting and pregnancy fatigue is absolutely kicking my butt!
My classroom feels like it is miles from the bathroom, but I was blessed with a great class this year so I can step out if needed!
Morning sickness aka all day sickness has ramped up this past week (9 weeks) and my biggest fear is puking in front of my class!! Fingers crossed I can keep it together!!
I haven't told my principal or other teachers yet, I will likely wait until 12 weeks (after my next appt) as long as I can keep it together (no puking)
I love this thread...because truly "there is no tired, like back to school teacher tired" and then throw in a little first trimester fatigue
I teach 4th grade ELA - most of our school is semi-departmentalized. Haven't told my principal yet but I have told a few of my close teacher friends. I co-teach with a special ed teacher for most of the day - I let her know and it's been a life saver. I've only had to excuse myself a few times when I felt sick but she totally understood and took over. I'm really lucky.
We're already in our 5th week of school so I'm glad to almost have the first 6 behind us but man, it is an exhausting way to start the year!

@Beckyf321do you have it in writing when they said to start 10 days before the year? They can still be held accountable to a verbal agreement but it would be easier I would think if you have an email or something.

Also a teacher. Tuesday starts the 3rd week for us. I teach 12th grade and I'm the cheerleading sponsor at small town Texas school so, football is life. Next week is homecoming so pray for me.
@wagnerw tomorrow is my first day with kiddos, too. I've been laying in bed for a half hour, contemplating just going to bed and skipping dinner, that's how tired I am.
Telling my principal in the morning. It is still early but morning sickness is kicking in and I am just tired of not talking about it. Also she is 4 months pregnant so hopefully it goes well.
How is the first week going for everyone who started back this week?
I am riding the struggle bus. Not so much actually teaching the kiddos, but the pure exhaustion once getting home. I have absolutely no motivation to do anything else. I've been at school from 6:20-5:30 every night that I just come home in tears. Plus I threw up for the first time last night. I hope this gets easier.
How is the first week going for everyone who started back this week?
The first day went well just going off pure excitement but then the second day I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a bus. Very hard to be motivated. Having a hectic, traveling schedule hasn't helped. I've been napping after school and still in bed by 9pm.
I was doing okay until today. I had that hit by a bus feeling @wagnerw. Then I got to work and found out that administration forgot to tell us about all this extra stuff that we needed to do with our homeroom students. I wanted to walk right back out of the building. By the time 4th period rolled around I thought I was going to just pass out (and I still had over half the day left!) I intend on going to bed right after I put DS to bed at 8 in hopes that I can make it through the day tomorrow.
I've been on the struggle bus all week. I am a zombie by 10am (which is mid-period 2 for us because we are on a 4 period day). On our A day schedule I teach two, 83 minute, ninth grade classes back-to-back and I need to eat about every hour to keep from feeling nauseous and getting a headache...so I have to sneak food between class periods. I saw my principal today, and she asked how I was feeling, I was like, "yep, I am definitely struggling!" She was very supportive and asked everything I had tried for the nausea. It makes things easier when the principal "gets" it.
I am 8 weeks and I told my boss last week, it went really well. I have told a couple other close friends at work and I think I'm going to wait until 12 to tell the rest. My symptoms have gotten better so I've been getting through the days pretty well (except for my hormonal anger-or just regular anger towards administrative decisions). I am actually getting really excited about when I will tell my kids. Not sure when I'll do that 4 months?
I'm 6 weeks into school and both my classes are great (we are departmentalized - I teach 2 sections of 4th grade ELA). I think this may be my easiest year in terms of kiddos. And it's a good thing because I've had to excuse myself quite a few times because of all day morning sickness. Luckily, I coteach for quite a bit of the day so I'm free to step out as needed.
Question - since most of us won't take the full12 week maternity leave (I'm guessing) before school is out this year, are you taking the remaining time at the beginning of the year? I am not due til April 25th and we get out of school a month later. I definitely want to take my full 12 weeks but I am having a hard time figuring out how it will go to be gone for the first 2 months of school. Thoughts?

I'm officially over a month into school (although it feels like MUCH more) I am counting my lucky stars every day for a great group of kiddos who have made it easier on me...but I am still SO tired! Some days I would love to teach from a laying down position I'm nearing 12 weeks and the end of first trimester...so I am hoping the nausea subsides and that I gain some of my energy back!

I'm due April 7th, and we are out the end of May...I won't take any time off at the beginning of the year because I will technically have gotten more than 12 weeks home with baby and I don't think we can split our leave up like that?!
I'm not sure how your 12 week leave works, but we have to use our vacation/personal time and I would love to start the school year with some sick days just in case!
I should have about 9 weeks off before our summer officially starts. In total I will have about 19 weeks at home (between maternity leave and summer vacation). In our district, we get 6 weeks paid, but can take up to 12. I will start the school year on time because I don't want to start the year unpaid (after the summer unpaid). I do think I could split it per FMLA, but, honestly, it's a PITA to get anything but the continuous weeks approved.
@ebloom3 That is really nice that you get 6 weeks paid! I wish my district did that...I technically get however much vacation/sick time I have accrued over the years as "paid" maternity leave...but it stinks to have to use all my personal time/sick leave.
I feel like with an April due date though I have the best scenario possible...I will have my 6-8 weeks (depending on actual day the baby is born and last day of school) plus summer and then start the year with my new sick/personal days...which is about 11. It will be nice to have some flexibility if baby is sick or something comes up!
This past week was rough. We had open house and I had two doctors appointments plus soccer for my toddler. I am looking forward to this week with less extra stuff going on. Although there are a bunch of crazy things going on with our schedule at school this week, but I think I can manage.
@cafedisco I will be returning to work in the fall. I am only paid for 6 weeks (and it is 6 calendar weeks. Last time Christmas break cut into my paid 6 weeks
Gosh you all are lucky to get any paid time - especially 6 weeks! We only get whatever sick days we have saved up, which will only be about a week for me by then (we get 2 a year). My summer is short (7.5 weeks), so between that and the end of the year, I know I won't be ready to go back. I'm just struggling with this a bit. I stopped working and was a SAHM for a year when DD was born. Less than 3 months doesn't seem like enough time at home with baby!! I guess I just need to talk to HR about it, which I haven't done yet.
Me: 31 DH: 36 Married 5 years DD born 8/30/13 #2 expected 4/25/17
I need to read up on my schools policy a bit more, but I do know that the time off is only "paid" when you use your sick/personal days. This is only my second year in the district so I do not have many accrued. They do have a general bank that you can apply to (for emergency illness, surgery, pregnancy, etc) but I would feel guilty using some of those days.
I think school has helped me start to feel a bit better (never thought I would say that). It makes it easier to conquer the 6 small meals a day because I just sort of graze throughout the day since I don't have a lunch break this term.
I have a couple of stinker classes that test my patience but other than that things are just busy and going along!
@cafedisco and @wagnerw the 6 weeks of paid leave will come out of my sick days. I have just saved pretty much every sick day for the past 10 years and used less than 30 last time (because of Christmas break) and will probably be using 30 this time unless baby comes before Easter (not due until the 21st so I doubt it)
our district does does have a sick bank that you can dip into if you run out of sick days, but people have to donate extra sick days to the bank and you are allowed to take so many for every year with the district, but I can't remember what that number is.
@cafedisco You only get 2 a year? That's absurd!! Come move to Baltimore and get 10 a year Or better yet, to wherever @ebloom3 is so you get 6 weeks paid!
I'm going to take the rest of the school year off - which will be 8-10 weeks depending on when baby arrives. Hopefully all that will be paid with sick days - I need to look at how many I have saved up. DD was 2 weeks early, but I know that has no bearing on the second kid. Definitely not going to use anymore weeks at the beginning of next school year. I know I'll be itching to get back to teaching in the fall, and the first few weeks of school are so exciting, I never want to miss it.
Joining in late to this convo. I am taking the rest of the year off. The district just made a new policy that allows one week paid leave for each month you've worked there with a maximum of twelve weeks. I am so thankful that they decided to do this. Although, I have been banking my days (40) for the past four years in anticipation of needing them for when baby comes, but oh well.
@JaneArson I get 2 weeks lol! I end up using a lot for DD being sick though. I only had 3 left at the end of last year and I am only in my second year with the district.
I guess my dates are just different than everyone's. We end the week of Memorial Day and teachers are back last week in July.
Me: 31 DH: 36 Married 5 years DD born 8/30/13 #2 expected 4/25/17
I meant 6 weeks paid...with my sick leave (I am not quite that lucky!). To me it's "paid" because I know some women who get 6 weeks, but don't get paid (even with sick leave).
@JaneArson you're in Baltimore? I'm in the county. We get an insane amount of sick days every year! Plus family leave, plus urgent business.
@cafedisco I am planning on taking the first few weeks of the school year off. We don't get out until late June (I'm in New Jersey) so I'll need about 6 weeks this school year and I'm going to take the other 6 next year. I know other people in my school have done the same.
