I've been back since August 8th but the kids don't come till next week. I co-teach so hopefully if things get bad I can just let the other teacher know and run out. I don't want to tell my boss till 12 weeks. I know she will be supportive but I just want to hold off. If I need to take time off for appointments I'll let her know early
I went back to work on Thursday, but the kids don't come back until the 31st. The kids get out in mid-June and I'm required to work 10 days past the end of the school year.
I don't care for my principal or dept. chair enough to tell them I'm pregnant anytime soon. I'll wait until December or January, whenever it becomes too obvious.
Another teacher here! I'm currently a Title I teacher and I do small group math and reading instruction for low performing students. Previously, I've taught 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 8th grades. We go back the day after Labor Day here in Michigan and I'm hoping to work right up to our spring break, which is the first week in April. I'll end up with about 5 months off (April - August...connecting my short maternity leave to summer break) and plan to go back to work in September 2017 at the start of the next school year. My first two sons were born in April and May and the timing worked out very well with work and summer break. It's nice that we have so many educators in this group already! Looking forward to getting to know you all.
The cafeteria about did me in today! I walked in to monitor the lunch line and oh mercy-the smells! It hit me hard and I had to turn around to regain composure. Thought I had it together then I walked into the teachers lounge. So many different lunches, so many different smells...
I'm a literacy coach and LA teacher in junior high. I just started at a new district, so I'm going to keep my pregnancy under wraps as long as possible and prove how awesome I am before announcing I'll take the last 6 weeks off school! This is my second though, so I'm hoping I don't show too soon. Hopefully my extra fluff around the mcorner dale will help
@belocin, I didn't even think about smells! I don't go back until next week, but between the cafeteria and smelly high school kids I might be in trouble!!
First day - DONE! I survived and all the kids ate lunch, shed no tears, and made it home safely (that's a big feat for first day of Kindergarten!) Pregnancy icks: - All the smells of course - The snot I wiped off another kid's (not my student) shirt. The back, mind you. How do you even get snot on the back of your shirt? I don't know why I even bother to wonder such things. - Wet shoelaces. Why are they wet? Nevermind. - When a kid sneezed out yogurt and I almost barfed because I'd already been nauseous for like 2 hours! Teacher loves: - Squeezy hugs - Sweet smiles - All the "your nice," and "your pretty" compliments I received from various 5 year olds today - The hooray they all shouted when I told them to come back tomorrow!
I told my principal and department chair. My principal was super excited and supportive. She is young, only 38, and has 3 daughters who are elementary aged, so she asked a bunch of questions. Nausea decided to hit today. I feel like I need to throw up, but can't (like, I would feel better if I just would). Tomorrow the kids return! Here we go!

I have my first day of staff development tomorrow and I had totally been dreading going back to school this year. But after reading your "Teacher Loves" it makes me SO excited for all the happy teaching moments that I know will happen. Although I teach 8th-10th grade so my teacher loves are more along the lines of "everyone behaved today" and "wow they really liked that review game today"
@belocin, @mrsw0920, & @chelle087, I'm the food service director for my district. I'm dreading next week (when I hit 7 weeks) and my ladies start cooking again. Thank God all my schools have a bathroom in the kitchen for me to run into!
I teach first grade and had the first day of school yesterday. I got there at 7 a.m. and got home at 8 p.m. Had just enough time for dinner and collapsed in bed. Today is day two and barely hanging on. I'm thinking a 9:30 p.m. bedtime haha. I'm finding that having to always be on the go is making me forget about how tired I am....until planning time where I turn off all the lights and sit in peace (past two days - meetings galore coming up though). By the time I get home I'm exhausted. I just can't wait to not feel tired anymore. The other day I cried to my hubby because I was so sick of being tired all the time and I worried I would be a bad teacher this year and disappoint everyone (won teacher of the year last year). I just need to suck it up for another 4 weeks or so and hope the energy comes back! Hubby now takes care of all the animals and I have hardly touched the kitchen
@Nolegirl1185 fellow first grade teacher here! Aren't they the sweetest? We start back after Labor Day and am finding hope that you aren't noticing how exhausted you are while with the kiddos. I'm also worried about not being on my A game. So much to worry about!
Yes! I love firsties! I taught a K-5 VE class my first year, kindergarten the next, and first since then. By far, teaching first grade is my favorite. I think all teachers worry about doing their best and improving each year, it's probably normal for us to worry we won't be on our A game. However only a few more weeks and hopefully that feeling will go away! Good luck to you, rest up while you can
Well, day 1 is in the books! Within 5 minutes of second period 2 ninth grade girls in my English class almost got into a fight. One girl backed down and stayed calm; the other flipped two desks. Luckily, my principal heard the call for an administrator and knows I'm pregnant. I had help very quickly. Needless to say, I told all three assistant principals I'm pregnant, so they know I can't break up fights! The rest of my day was great, thankfully!
@KirstinH88 I thought the same thing! The girls didn't know each other! After class, some kids who went to middle school with the desk flipper told me she is always like that. She is quick to fight and to a temper.
Yes. So much yes. They jam packed our first two days full of meetings with no classroom time (we allegedly have more classroom time next week, but we all know how that goes...).
Hi all! Fourth grade teacher here. This is the second full week of school for us. I have been stacked with the lowest performing kiddos this year. I have 27 all under grade level for ELA first thing in the morning. Needless to say I have been too busy to remember I'm pregnant and thankfully not too many symptoms yet. My principal does already know because I had some complications last week which resulted in two unexpected doctor's appts. I broke down like a crazy person and ugly cried in her office. So embarrassing!
@mallyandryan hope everything is okay now. I can imagine how you must be feeling with your class this year. It can be very frustrating. Your admins must think highly of you to give you such a class. They know you will be good for those kids this year. I also forget I'm pregnant until I get dizzy and nauseous at the end of the day. Ugh. It's no fun getting things ready for the next day when I simultaneously want to eat, puke, sleep, and poop. Bleh.
@Breesy14 yes... End of the day is definitely the worse right now. With my son, I was sick every morning, but normally ok by the time I got to school. This time I am just beyond exhausted and feeling rough at 3:00. I wasn't supposed to have that many kids, but it seemed like all the new kids this year needed extra support so because of schedules they have to come to me. I am also team leader and redelivering training for a new reading curriculum that I have to attend training for, so it should make for an interesting year. I have several kids with a reputation for behavior problems, but luckily they have been a pretty sweet group so far, just really needy. Good luck this year!
@mallyandryan I get where you're coming from. I am on a committee with two other teachers to help plan mods in our kinder lesson plans for sped kids. Usually we have 3-5. This year we have 14! I'm the only kinder teacher teacher on the committee so I really have my hands full. Enrollment has been closed in our school because we're full too - we have over 1200 k-5 kids this year in a school built for 800. It's nuts! Then, if that weren't enough, the good ol state of TX required all kinder teachers to be ESL certified this year. So none of the kinder esl students will be pulled for services. We are expected to pull them one on one several times a week this year. They won't receive any additional support. We are up to our ears with the extra responsibilities we have this year on top of the usual. It's going to be a busy year! Good luck to you too! We will certainly need it.

@cookies754 @chelle087 I fear my reaction to the smells will give me away before the bump does!
