@jkershaw2013 Be careful with Babywise - it advocates the "cry it out" method which is pretty controversial with a newborn. Just take it with a grain of salt. Not trying to stir up a big debate or anything.
I know nothing about Baby Wise but just wanted to point out that my friend (mom of 2 & a trauma RN) just told me last week that the cry it out method shouldn't start this early as the baby's nervous system is not yet fully developed & if she cries, she actually needs to be comforted right away.
Yes. Cry it out can be a method to use, but not until they are older. Newborns always cry for a reason. Even if you have no freaking clue what they want. (This was me last night!). The first time I used the cry it out method my first was 16 months. Bu the time you can use that method you will know your baby's cries, and you'll know that "fake" one all too well!
@Bookhousegirl I don't even know if I would classify it as projectile, it didn't shoot feet away but it didn't just dribble out of his mouth either like if he were to just spit up. Now that you mention it though, I think the both times he threw up were right after a cluster feed so maybe he was just being over fed.
I talked to a nurse this morning and told her what was going on and she basically just told me what I already knew. She said feed him smaller amounts but more frequently, burp him after every ounce, sit him upright for 30 minutes after every feeding, and have him sleep on an incline. At one point a few days ago he was taking 4 ounces and she said a 2 week old baby shouldn't be drinking that much. Since last night though he's been eating 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours. She wants me to call back tonight to update her on how he's been today which so far so good.
Has anyone used a chiropractor for an infant adjustment?
Yep, I had LO seen last week at 4 weeks. They didn't do much, but they were able to "adjust" his lower back. They thought it might have been causing some of his gasiness. He's still gassy, but not quite as bad as before. Just make sure you see a chiro you trust, and know what they are doing and why.
@Stephanie7693 - yes, it would be the chiro I saw during pregnancy. I was thinking about it specifically for gas. Glad to know you LO got some relief!!
@tisunge602, @Stephanie7693 and @AliKay20 I should have read a little bit more before I posted!! I didn't know the premise was to cry it out!! It was recommended to me by some of my co-workers but I thought it just helped you establish a routine with sleeping/feeding! Oops! I've only read the first chapter! But yeah the cry it out method is def. Not appropriate for a newborn, I agree. I hate it when DD cries!
@jkershaw2013 look into the baby whisperer .. It is kind of like baby wise but not so drastic. It helps set a routine and pattern but isn't quite as rigid as baby wise
I just read through a bunch of these (trying to catch up after being so involved with LO over the last few days!!) anyways, DH and I both have colds from our BIL who we saw a week ago (I of course came down with it literally the DAY I went into labor)
besides the obvious washing hands, not sneezing on baby, etc etc does anyone have experience with their newborn miraculously not getting your cold? I'm so pissed because I didn't know BIL was sick when we saw him. It made labor, and currently recovering (on day 3) so much harder than it needs to be!! Coughing + stitches = absolute hell

The thing about Babywise I DO like is the Eat-Play-Sleep routine (sometimes called EASY). We started using that pattern to establish a schedule when DS1 was about 6-8 weeks old and it really helped -- in fact, I think we did Eat-Play-Sleep until he was almost a year old.
If you're looking for help with nighttime sleep specifically, check out the No Cry Sleep Solution book. I read that when DS1 was a baby and it gave a lot of good ideas.

Are you breastfeeding? If you are, LO will pick up the antibodies your body is making through your breastmilk! Hope you feel better soon.
I second the Baby Whisperer book. We used it with DD and I love that we rarely ever have had to let her cry it out. In fact if she cries for more than 5-10 minutes we know there's probably something going on (teething, dirty diaper, etc.) and her crying at all is rare.

Yes to the Eat Play Sleep routine. It helped me feel somewhat structured, and help DS1 distinguish between nights and days. I didn't read baby wise, but I was told about the EASY part from a friend and it was great for us. I plan on starting it again with LO in the next couple of weeks.
@tisunge602@Bookhousegirl At what age did you start trying to implement that structure? I'd like to try to get into a routine but have no idea when that can even begin to happen.

I think we started around 6-8 weeks? I know for sure we were doing it by 2 months because we left him for a full day with my parents for our anniversary and I remember writing out those instructions!
The thing I like best about EASY (Eat, Awake, Sleep, You) is that LO doesn't get used to eating himself to sleep. He eats right when he wakes up rather than right before a nap. So as soon as he wakes up from a nap, he eats, then stays awake til falling asleep for the next nap. That way, down the road, you never have to wean him off of nursing himself to sleep, if that makes sense, because he's used to doing the opposite.
When baby is really little, you'll go through lots of EASY cycles per day because newborns can only stay awake for an hour or two at a time. But the older they get, the longer they can stay awake, and you'll get down to fewer and fewer EASY cycles (i.e. naps) per day. Does that make sense?

I believe we started around 4 weeks with DS1. At that point, he would only stay awake for an hour at a time, but it still gave us a little predictability. We also started a nighttime routine around the same age and his bedtime and routine has basically stayed the same up until now (2.5 yrs old). I swear by the nighttime routine - bath, bottle/boob (this we took out when he was 1ish), book, bed - and he's been sleeping through the night since he was 8weeks or so. Not sure that we'll be so lucky with this LO, but I'll still start attempting it around 4 weeks.

I started a routine with DS1 when he was about 10 weeks old. I was going back to work a few weeks later so I wanted to get a routine going. It was still very much an "on demand" thing but we put him in his crib to nap, etc and had a bedtime routine.
For those of you who have given up dairy (now or previously) for a dairy sensitivity with breastfeeding, when did you see an improvement in baby's GI system? It's been a week and no improvement here.. His pediatrician said it can take a couple weeks but it's quite frustrating! I just hope it works soon, I hate seeing baby in pain.
Does anyone have trouble with little one constantly crying from around 11pm to 3 or 4 am? I have tried everything i can think of, from feeding to swaddling to soothing to diaper.
Curious if anyone is using any type of White Noise with their little ones.
We have been using an app that plays "car riding" noises but trying "lullabys" tonight. Spotify has some great classics songs made into lubbabys. It's pretty cool, hoping it works with DS tonight!
@sbelle474 we are more fussy from 1-5 am. Hoping the white noise helps tonight. Haven't tried it for nighttime just naps.

Same here. DD is always fussy before "bedtime." We pretty much just feed her, change her, swaddle her, let her cry, repeat until she cries it out. It's awful.

@sbelle474 Yes, C constantly cries from 10/11-12/1. It used to be 12-2am but we've gotten it to move up so we can tag team versus just one of us having to deal with it. We try everything from feeding to changing his diaper to holding him and he just wails. He will finally get to a point where he's so tired that he'll eat and pass out.
@msdidonato I used a nature sounds playlist on Pandora for DD and at nap time for my daycare baby. It has nature sounds and some soothing music. They both seemed to like it. LO has been good at night so far, but he's only a week old. Once he gets to being fussy we'll probably start using it again. Right now he sleeps with an air conditioner though, so he does have some white noise.
@sbelle474 my LO is fussy around the same time. It takes the longest to get her down and to stay down. All other rules when she wakes up to nurse she's relatively easy to nurse and then go right back to sleep. Last night I eventually just let her fuss for a little while. Not raging scream and cry but a couple cries then quiet, couple cries then quiet until we both just fell asleep. I live snuggling with her during the day and when people come to visit I let them hold her even when she's sleeping, I'm thinking I might need to limit that, I don't want her to get used to being held to sleep!
Finally after not pooping since Monday, I was about to call the pediatrician this morning, J pooped so much he almost had a blow out and once I got done changing him and a new diaper on him he pooped some more. Go baby J!! Gotta love a good poop...or two.
Adding to the fussing at night...J is fussy from around 9:30-12:30 almost every night.
I use the white noise on my rnp and mamaroo and it lulls him to sleep - JR actually gets annoyed with the lullaby and nature sound settings. Also when he gets fussy in the car and I'm alone I turn on a static radio channel as loud as his cries and he calms down instantly.
@squishy0511- With dd1 the projectile vomiting stopped pretty quickly but the gas continued for a few weeks. It was probably a month of no dairy before the gassiness completely went away. It slowly got better but we definitely still had some rough days.
Hayes is exactly one week today. He is back to birth weight but the amount he is sleeping is insane. DD never slept so I don't know if I just need to change my expectations or if this is normal. He has probably been awake all of 45 minutes today. I don't want tonight to be a complete shit show. Any ideas on how to keep him up for a bit? The usual tricks aren't working (wash cloth, tickling feet, etc). Or is this just normal?
@LWC1112 same here. Luckily LO is really laid back, so when I lay him in the pnp he just lays there. I feel bad that he's awake at night and just laying there, though. I've tried keeping him up today, but nothing is working here either. He's a week + 1 day. I'm hoping he'll figure out the whole night/day thing soon. I feel for the mamas with cranky babies all night. DD was a lot less content than this guy is.
@msdidonato The white noise helps us quite down DS immensely. We use a white noise app on our phones to a wireless speaker (he seems to like the pink noise track -sounds like static). We play it pretty loudly.
@LWC1112 my LO seemed to do nothing but sleep for the first two weeks or so. Each week he spends a little more time awake. At 4.5 weeks he spends quite a bit of time awake now. Like a whole hour or more at a time!
@LWC1112 I felt the same way for the first 2 weeks, but this week he has been much more awake (3 weeks tomorrow). It didn't seem to affect his nighttime sleep, though, so I wouldn't stress too much, enjoy it while it lasts!
I have a random question, I've recently switched to feeding my LO formula because my supply has slowly been dwindling. She seems to be somewhat constipated since getting mostly formula. She has a dirty diaper Atleast once a day but they're formed stool and she looks like she works pretty hard to get them out. Anyone know what we can do help loosen her stools up some?

@kcolly32. We are in the same boat. I actually sent a message to the pediatrician this evening bc it's breaking my heart to watch DS squirm and get so frustrated. I will let you know what they say!

Last night was a pretty bad night. DD barely slept and was fussy all night. She wasn't content in my arms, in her pack and play or her swing. I decided to give up on sleep so I'm just sitting here drinking coffee catching up on TB. The birth announcements this morning lifted my spirits a little, I know they all have been waiting so patiently to meet their LOs! I guess I'll "sleep when baby sleeps" today...
