@jkershaw2013 We've used onesies with no issues; just be careful when putting them on and taking them off. C's stump finally came off yesterday (16 days old).
@jkershaw2013 yes, you can put a onsie one. There should be some breath ability to the onsie, nothing super tight but a regular onsie or little night time gown thing is fine. My baby class just said don't wrap a tight cloth around their tummy (I guess this is done in some cultures idk) and the most important thing is to keep it dry.
I discovered by chance that baby A stops crying when I turn on my blowdryer. She's about to frantically cry right now and I'm trying to see if there's a clip of blowdryer sound on Youtube

That reminds me -- the White Noise app on my phone was a lifesaver when DS1 was a NB. Sometimes if he was just fussy, I'd play white noise next to his ear (his favorite was the rain) and he would calm right down. (Similar to the Happiest Baby on the Block concept of "shushing.")
@AliKay20 There is a "Hair Dryer" song on Spotify! I made it into a one-song playlist and have it loop on repeat when I've exhausted all other strategies. It's nice because you can still use your phone for other things (like Etsy and Bumping!) while it plays in the background. The White Noise app that I found locks me out of using my phone.

Wait, are you serious? This is a thing?! Lol! Guess I'm downloading Spotify again on my phone!
I had Avery in the rock n play in the bathroom but she was fussing and crying. I had just gotten out of the shower and decided to quickly dry my hair or else I won't be able to later. As her cry got louder, I turned on my blowdryer and she fell back asleep.
The look on my face was as if I discovered a pot of gold. Mind. Blown.
@AliKay20 Yes! Nice job on the discovery! It totally works. Do I use the Spotify song? Yes. Have I blow dried my hair since baby was born? Negative. #thatnewbornlife
Ok well I'm definitely downloading this hairdryer business. I guess I haven't dried my hair in well over a week...much less shower. So thanks for the idea ladies! I'm desperate at this point at 130am.
I swear Aria becomes a completely different baby in the evening/late nights. And during the early morning and day she couldn't be happier.

@midwestbaby Ella is the same way, so different. During the day she'll nurse and then pass out for 2-3 hours. At night she's never down for more than 45 minutes. But it feels like she never sleeps at night. Just nurses or wants to be held. Omg I just want to sleep for like an hour or two... I'm sitting here in my room with the pack and play, DH is sleeping in the nursery on a mattress on the floor ..I think it's time to wake daddy up
@jkershaw2013 This is exactly my life right now. Luckily DH took shift 9pm-1am with her. I have been pumping extra milk for him to give her. It's been saving my sanity tonight that's for sure. Now I am up with her for the remainder of the night. She usually doesn't settle down until 4 am. Only two more hours to go...and maybe just maybe I can slip into bed without her having a meltdown.
I say wake your DH up for a shift so you can get some sleep. Tonight has definitely made my patience level better with that extra sleep.

Caia is also on a much better schedule during the day. DH took her from about 10 to midnight so I could get some more sleep but he is not dealing well with sleep deprivation either (even though he is not up as much as I am ). When he brought her to me for feeding he was cursing and saying how terrible she is because she wouldn't settle down to sleep the whole time he had her. I appreciate the uninterrupted sleep but I also don't want it to damage their relationship

I have a picture of DD when she was about 3 or 4 weeks old with the blow dryer and vacuum going right next to her swing. We had the white noise apps, but she wanted the real thing. It would knock her out!
Saw the pediatrician today and she confirmed my LO probably has a dairy sensitivity that's being transferred through my breast milk so no more dairy for me! She said it could be a few weeks before its out of our system though. Has anyone tried the little remedies gas relief, hylands gas drops, or gripe water? Does any seem better than the other in effectiveness?

Gripe water seems to actually help for us. Gas drops didn't seem to make any difference.
Almost everyone I know has had a cold in the last couple weeks. I've kept all the sick people away, but my big kids managed to catch it anyway. Tonight baby has been sneezing a lot, and is a little congested. He sneezed out boogers tonight and spit up twice, which is unusual. I'm so afraid he caught the cold too, and I don't know what to do if he did. He's only 3 weeks old

My MIL just said on the phone today, " Baby Peter! You're three weeks old today! Your daddy had a cold at three weeks old.". Ok, that was just something that had to said because I'm exhausted and that seemed like a great answer to your question. Hahaha. Sounded better in my head I would be so passed. I guess since they are too little for meds try saline drops? And a humidifier?
So DD is 10 days old now and the only place we have been outside the home is the doctor. I'm pretty sure that the consensus with a newborn is to keep them out of the general public as much as possible until they are two months old and have had their first round of vaccines. But I think I'm going to go stir crazy sitting in the house for that amount of time. Id love to just get out and run one errand to avoid cabin fever, but feel like I can't because DS is EBF. Have any of you ladies taken your newborn out before they were two months of age? I was thinking about a walk would even be great, but it's been so so hot and humid.

@midwestbaby We've been out a few times with C. We've gone to lunch, Target, and on several walks. To minimize being exposed to germs, DH usually will wear C in his carrier. We tried to time the trips after C has been fed and passed out.
At around 2 wks, baby A went to Target, Wegman's (grocery store), and some open houses (we stopped house hunting for now). She went to Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby at 3 wks old (needed my Milkies milk saver and diapers). At 4 wks, we went to a restaurant so DH & I can feel like normal people (got so tired of ordering in) for that 45 mins. At 5 wks, we took her to Whole Foods & Nordstrom. Just the other night, we put her in the Ergo and walked to Trader Joe's.
(Hm, I think I need to put this in her baby book).
She went to these places mainly in her stroller but just recently, DH has been wearing his Ergo if we are just going a few blocks away to some of these places. When I felt better (for me this was around 4 wks PP), we also have been walking around our neighborhood with our dog as a family outing but at night when the weather is semi-cooler (& less pple out and about).
2 things we make sure before we leave the house: Fresh diaper change and feed baby
In sum, we take her out once or twice (max) a week for 30 mins to an hr for my own sanity. Even being out for 10 mins to walk my dog gives me a sense of sanity.
@midwestbaby DD is 8 days old now, yesterday I went to tj Maxx right after feeding her so she wasbout cold. I wore her in my ring sling and were only there for like 10 minutes because I knew exactly what I needed. We also went to Walmart a couple of days ago with DH after her appointment. Again right after I breastfed her in the car so she would be out! I def. Think it has helped my feel more normal, plus I can get a little vitamin d! I'm so ready for it to not be so hot and humid!
@midwestbaby Perhaps we are the worst parents ever, but we had to get out of the house and have taken baby out quite a bit. So far no illnesses (knock on wood!).
We took him out to lunch at 4 days old, to the grocery store twice (once at 2 weeks and once at 3 weeks old), and then to two cookouts at 3 weeks old. I felt super guilty about the cookouts afterwards and really beat myself up about it since everyone was touching him and I didn't know if I had just made a huge mistake. But other than gas, he seems okay.
Like @AliKay20 , we also take a nightly walk for 10-15 minutes around 8pm each night in the stroller (when it is a little cooler). We only started doing that this week (4 weeks old) since I would swell up down there with the heat and humidity (probably something for you to keep in mind, too).
Getting out has been saving me from going completely insane, although I admit that as a FTM that is EBF, I didn't realize it was so dangerous.
I'm supposed to take him to a soccer game tonight (they're letting us watch from a press box to stay out of the heat and be around fewer people).
Here's hoping I'm not the worst mom out there and good luck as you figure out what works for you!
*Side note (noob): can you still say that you are EBF if you pump your own breast milk? If not, is there a term for "breast milk only but not always directly from the breast"? Lol

Caia has been to the grocery store, to a dinner party with new faculty, and to the college where I work to drop off paperwork. As a breastfeeding baby, I feel like she has better protection than a formula baby, and we just have to get out occasionally. She mostly stays in her lille baby carrier, worn by my hubby, so she's not getting a lot of contact with other people.
Married May 2014 DD born August 2016 Baby #2 due December 2017
@midwestbaby breastfed babies are actually even safer to bring in public than formula fed babies because they are getting your immunity through your milk. We took DS1 everywhere as a newborn. I just wore him or kept him in the carrier.
Thanks guys for easing my mind. I'm going to have DH read these responses when we get up for the day. Maybe he will feel more comfortable now after reading them. I know I do.
He has been going out and getting everything we need, but I need some nursing bras, and that's something I need to go out and purchase. Although I could imagine DH going and picking out a few and bringing them home for me to try on. Ha!

@midwestbaby We've taken Peter a few places. With Lilly-Kate we were at target the week she was born lol in October and she didn't catch anything! We just keep the car seat covered and keep our hands clean with hand sanitizer if they feel gross and dirty. I think as long as you're not letting everyone hold her or touch her she should be just fine!
Yes, I agree with @bananers -- go wherever you want to go! I took DD to the airport, the store, Starbucks, the mall-- basically wherever I needed to go. I would have lost my mind staying at home for two weeks!
I've taken Levi to target numerous times, walks, a friend's bbq, a family reunion, and a few other errands. I just make sure whover touches him washes thier hands, and don't let him get passed around by lots of people. We can't hibernate just because we have baby. Life goes on for everyone else, we do as much as we can safely to keep up.
@midwestbaby we took J to target at 3 days old to get formula, Swaddlers, and other things but he slept in his car seat the whole time. He also went to my BIL's wedding at a week old and has since been to target a couple more times.
@Lynnlove28 DH and I wondered the same thing. Baby J had an appointment Wednesday at 11 days old and the doc told us we could have stopped a week ago lol so I would just use your best judgment, if it looks fine then stop using it!
We went for our first walk on Wednesday - 10 days pp and have gone out for 2 walks a day since. I also stopped by my husbands office yesterday during one of our walks. My dr said 2 weeks pp is good timing and that walking is going to help mom heal faster. I'm c section though so not sure if that makes a difference.
We are going to attempt a target trip this afternoon. This is the longest I have ever gone without shopping there. I'm usually a twice a week kinda gal. So to go two weeks without, I'm like a kid in a candy store today. And all we are doing is picking up prenatals and looking at nursing bras. #itsthelittlethings

@Lynnlove28 we stopped the gauze and Vaseline after one week
@midwestbaby DS is 2.5 weeks old and until yesterday, we'd only been to doctors appointments and short walks outside. Yesterday I went out with him for an hour to a couple stores, and today to panera for lunch. He has stayed either in the stroller or worn by me each time out. It feels much harder with a second child to stay cooped up, but I also know of several families whose second child became very ill as a newborn because the family was more relaxed (cases of meningitis and RSV in newborns). It's a tough balance, and I'm especially going stir crazy because I've been staying almost all day in our bedroom so I can be out of the new nanny's way as she takes care of our toddler. We definitely won't let non-family hold the baby and are avoiding any crowded areas/ social gatherings.
@midwestbaby Our pedi even cleared us for church as soon as I felt up to it as long as I didn't let people hold DD. He recommended leaving her in the car seat or wearing her because people are less likely to ask if they're not just "out" there being held.
We've gone out to do a few things. We went to the grocery store when she was 5 days old (kept in car seat) and at 8 days old went to a community thing and then out to dinner. She just slept in his car seat for all of that. We have a carrier but I need to exchange it for a smaller size.
With our first, we also got out and about in the first few weeks. We def took the approach that it was better to include him in things we want to / need to do. Might be a coincidence, but our 3 yo has always been great at restaurants, likes to go to target and the grocery store, and is just generally very adaptable. I'm hoping that by including this LO in things, she'll also be as adaptable.
