Maternity Winter Coat?

I know it's August but I'm thinking ahead!   :)

I was lucky enough to get by without a maternity coat for my previous babies (Oct and Dec birthdays).  But with a March due date I feel like I have no choice!  What are you all planning?  Advice on where to look?

Re: Maternity Winter Coat?

  • I live in Michigan so I will definitely need a coat- I mentioned it to my mom and then one day she said she just bought me one at Macy's because she had a bunch of gift cards she needed to spend. Thanks mom! :)

  • I had 2 March babies and lived in Nebraska at the time so winters ranged from really cold and windy with baby 1 to a really mild winter with baby 2.  I was able to get through much of the winter in my normal winter coat and by Feb/March it didn't phase me to just wear it unzipped because I was warm anyways with being 8 months pregnant and what I was wearing under it.  I still live in the Midwest and plan to wear my regular coat and just layer it.  I couldn't justify buying a maternity coat I really only needed for a few months.

  • We get a decent amount of snow where I live and winters get cold, so I bought a brand new one when I was pregnant with DD. I knew I would get my money's worth from it in one season. I'll definitely get my money's worth now, since I'll need it this winter, too!

Are you about to have your third March baby?  How do you plan to celebrate all those birthdays at once?? :)
  • I voted that I wouldn't need one. I'm in North Carolina and our winters vary quite a bit. But, they never get extraordinarily cold and so I am hoping to get away with unbuttoned coats and layering.

DS was an early December baby. I had a maternity fleece from Old Navy that was just fine. You tend to run a little warmer in third tri (Jan/Feb/March are our coldest months), anyway. I actually got a nice black dress coat from a Motherhood outlet and never actually wore it.

  • I live and work in Chicago and commute by foot daily.  I will most definitely be purchasing a coat and it will need to be a good one because of the winters that we have.
  • My sister-in-law had a late February baby and gave me the wool maternity peacoat she used! I'm glad, because I probably would have just made do without it!
  • I had two Winter babies and never bought a coat. I was fine with the first because I would avoid the outdoors and bundle up other clothes. The second was inconvenient because DD1 is an outdoorsy person. I think I will buy one this time because I don't want to fight with my kids about living in the snow!
  • I had gotten one from a coworker when pregnant with DD, but I wasn't too big yet during the winter, but I know this year I'll need one, I'm going to try and get away with mine as long as I can, because after this pregnancy I don't see myself needing it again lol

  • I live in Wisconsin where it is freezing and horrible, but I don't plan to buy one. I will either borrow one of DH's coats or just wear mine unzipped. Last pregnancy (August baby) I was sooooo HOT when I was 7 and 8 months pregnant so if that holds true this time winter will feel pleasant.

  • I live in Oregon so it usually is pretty mild here.  I can't bring myself to spend a ton of money on a coat I'll only wear one season though, so I'll probably pick one up at a second hand store

  • The winters are pretty mild here, but some days are just so damn cold! Last time I wore my normal coat unzipped, but I was still cold and I remember thinking to myself that next time I have a baby I'm getting a new one. I'm one of those people that's always cold and am miserable when I am. I love being nice and toasty.
  • I have one from last pregnancy and used it sooooo much! And actually still use it on exceptionally cold days because there's room for extra bundling underneath. A great investment in my opinion.

I live in ON, Canada, so I'll 100% absolutely need a good one and I'm not looking forward to it. I'll be finding one online as we don't have even one maternity store where I am. I'm kind of dreading spending the money on it..

Eta: Anyone have any suggestions that are available online? I have a 3 year old that will want to be building snowmen and making snow angels all winter long.   :/
  • I am one of those always cold ppl but I don't like a big bulky coat. Mine is a thick but not bulky coat that's a size too big so I can pile the layers on under it. My last babe came in April and I got away with mainly large baggy sweatshirts. I really only need a coat for the short walk to the car. I say if you are a coat wearer and you think you'll get more than a month of wear out of it, get something that makes you look beautiful!
  • Our winters are bad, but honestly I won't be outside for any extended period of time. It'll mostly be going from the car to buildings. I'm just going to make due with my wool coat unbuttoned if I need to.
  • I got a great one at pea in a pod on super clearance during my last pregnancy. It had been leftover from the year prior. Maybe check and see if any stores have something left?
  • I'll be in So Cal so won't need one but I did live in Ohio when DD was born in February and didn't really need one then. Pretty much just had one heavy coat that I bought one size larger than normal. Left the hospital in a sweatshirt as I wasn't in the cold long.
  • Unless I find something really cheap--just gonna go unbuttoned. It's super cold up here in Maine, but mostly in and out to car and buildings.  When I'm active outdoors on a nicer day a heavy coat is usually too much anyway.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm actually going to share this thread with DH bc he's the one trying to convince me to get a coat. I think after reading all these posts I could probably get away with my normal jacket, unzipped. Thank you all and stay warm!
  • @Burrberrymum I live in ON too!!! Lol that is all.
  • I live in New York so our weather can be cold. I hate wearing a coat when I drive so to drive I usually have my husband start the car and have my seat warmer on. I park very close to the door at work so I'm not outside very long. I have a bunch of wraps and ponchos that I wear and lots of layers. So no buying a coat for me!

  • I borrowed one from a friend for my last March baby, and didn't end up using it at all - I just used my normal winter coats, they worked fine all winter for me.

  • I found one recently on super cheap sale so I got it, but had it not been so cheap I probably would have just dealt. The PNW gets wet but not really cold, but I figure a wool coat with a hood will get used, plus it's wrap with a tie not buttons or zipper so it fits me now and I could potentially get away with wearing it when not pregnant

  • I'm in northern Utah and since it's coat weather from about November through April (and sometimes randomly in June or September) and I plan to have 1 or 2 more babies I will probably just buy one. All of my friends lately have had summer babies so I don't know of anyone to borrow from.

  • I have a coat that is to big that I'll probably wear.  The only time I really wear one is when it snows because I don't like driving in one.

  • Even though I live in MA I avoid coats as much as possible. I hate being bulky so I'll just deal
  • DS was born March 30th and my MIL gifted me one for my birthday in Sept. I believe she got from destination maternity and it's gotten it's fair share of use! My friend had her son on DS 1st birthday!! She borrowed throughout her pregnancy and I'll be wearing it again. It's been in use 3 winter seasons now!

You our can usually find good deals on Old Navy maternity, H&M maternity and possibly even ASOS. I haven't used them for outerwear but their basics are super affordable!

I live in Northern CT. East Longmeadow is 10 minutes from me. Are you in the area?

  • SS: My son was due in January so I got a new coat last time from motherhood maternity. I'll reuse that this winter

  • I bought a clearance coat from Motherhood Maternity. It was $100, marked down to $80 with 40% off, so $48.

I live in the Chicago area and commute on the train from the suburbs to the city. I have a 1/2 mile walk from the train to my office and the wind in the Chicago loop is NO JOKE. I knew I couldn't get away without one.
  • @twinklepits i'm right outside Boston but I grew up in Enfield so I know exactly where you're at!
  • @Cbeanz

Yes ma'am.   Fourth baby, 3rd one due in March.  DD 1 & 2 have bdays of March 5th and 15th, DD3 was born end of January and thus baby is due March 25th.  We will just turn March into a second Christmas at our house.....lol.

Actuaully what we do now for the 2 March birthdays is have a combined party for both with family and then they get their own friend party.  It's a crazy month, but it is definitely fun.

  • I live in Michigan but I still don't wanna shell out for a maternity coat. I do need a new winter coat in general though. Ill probably get one non-maternity and leave it unbuttoned. I did the same with DS (late April baby) and the belly never felt cold!

  • SS: I've recently lost a lot of weight (a lot). I had a winter coat at my largest that was cute and still pretty roomy. I held onto it because I figured it would be perfect for a maternity coat.

  • I got a really cute maternity pea coat on sale on the Old Navy website last pregnancy. It doesn't get too cold where I live but I was really glad I had a coat that felt put together and fit without worrying. Plus I'm always cold and I love outdoor holiday events!

If you want one I really think it's worth it. I wore it every single day Dec - Feb!
  • Any advice from teachers (or someone who is outside a lot) on this? I live in the Midwest and will be doing outdoor recess likely twice a day. I was hoping not to have to invest but with recess duty, idk.

  • @liepertsm. I bought a puffy coat from Old Navy last time around. It was so warm that I actually have worn it pretty frequently since then too
