@liepertsm I'm also a teacher in the Midwest/ Chicago suburbs, although I don't do recess. My mom (who is about 2 sizes bigger than me, sans baby belly) gave me one of her winter coats for DD who was born in January. I plan on using that one again. I used to do recess duty and know how cold it could get. If you can't borrow a good one, I would probably invest, if possible. It will be worth it to be comfortable and hopefully reuseable if you ever plan on having more. Lots of people have said that baby works like a heater and keeps you toasty, but I never got that from DD. I was always cold, even at 9 months. It really is different for everyone!
My sister had my niece on 3/26/2014 and I'm due 3/5/16, so I'm basically taking all of her things. I saw some really cute ones on the H&M website over the weekend and was tempted though.
I'm going to play it by ear. Definitely live in a cold state but if i can get by without buying one i definitely will. I don't spend a ton of time outside, my only concern would be going out to play with my daughter but maybe I could get away with one of my husband's coats for that. If I have to buy one i'll probably look for used, or maybe it will be late enough in the season they will be on sale.
They don't have maternity-specific sizing, but Uniqlo has the absolute warmest coats (for less than $150!!) that I've ever worn. I've lived in NY my whole life and I FINALLY felt warm walking around NYC for the first time last winter after I bought one of their coats.
I started using my maternity coat right now- I can still zip it with out unzipping the side panels but there is no way I would make it all winter without making it bigger. It was a gift from my mom but I think it was definitely worth it- I live in Michigan and hate being cold!
@kpknoke my mom got it from motherhood maternity- I think she ordered it from Macys. Its black, down filled- no hood. Pretty nice coat in my opinion, wish it was a little thicker but does the job.
I was one of the people insisting we wouldn't need winter coats because pregnant people are always hot. I am eating my words and I really need one! I have super warm coats for the winter but I'm realizing I really want to be able to zip something up. I don't want to spend a lot, but at the same time, you wear if everyday, so...
Just a heads up - there are also jacket extenders that will save you having to buy a whole new jacket. They zip into your jacket and make any jacket a maternity coat. Also, they can convert to baby carrying in the future. Here's what one would look like:
Follow up: There is currently a fleece zip up hoodie with zip in panels for maternity and baby carrying selling on groupon goods for $14.99. It's $20 after shipping.
I lucked out on the coat front, my mom lost a ton of weight but still had a winter jacket from before and that should get me through. It's 2 sizes bigger than my usual size, but my normal one is just starting to get too small! No way I'm going through a MA winter with no coat!
I got a puffy maternity coat with the furry hood from old navy. With online sales, coupons, and free shipping in total it was $50 or so. It's a really warm coat. I wore it Saturday night to the great pumpkin blaze in 38 degree weather and was toasty.
I have the non-maternity version of the ON puffy coat with the fur-trimmed hood and I had to order it like three sizes bigger because it runs so small. It works for now, but I will probably need a bigger one down the road. @jrde50eb12 Do you think your coat fits true to size?

They don't seem to have the specific one that I got, https://www.uniqlo.com/us/product/women-warm-tech-down-coat-146588.html but I'm sure they will as they cycle past Fall clothing.
But even this one is shockingly warm, & $99 (I have this one too
