Weekly fitness checkin - 7/25/2016

edited July 2016 in January 2017 Moms
Hey Ladies are we starting to feeling better or what?!

Who's made it back to the gym this week or did some at home exercises, cleaning running around with toddlers or simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator?

Let's hear it!!

Re: Weekly fitness checkin - 7/25/2016

  • I literally did the one legged slide out of bed this morning and put on my runners. It was tough but the time flew by chatting with my mom on thr phone and doing a Hebrew YouTube lesson. By the time I knew it the 45 min cardio up and down the hill was over!!
  • Loading the player...
  • Yesterday I walked for close to two hours. I was just going to walk for an hour but right as that ended a girl I just met this weekend texted and asked if I wanted to go for a walk with her and her puppy - I'm still new to town so I jumped at the chance for friendly interaction!  I woke up a little sore from so much walking after weeks of sitting around. I'll probably keep it to 45 minutes to an hour today.

  • Yesterday was yoga day, today was 30 min on the elliptical. I started with some back/sciatic pain last week and the yoga has really really helped!

  • I have finally been feeling better and am SO relieved to get back into some of my old routines.  I went for an hour long walk at lunch on Monday, woke up early for a run this morning before work, and am planning to go to my regular Wednesday Zumba class tomorrow evening.  It feels so good to be active again, but can I just say that all progress I made with my running speed is completely lost now?  I'm slower now than I ever have been - like, embarrassingly slow.  Like I had a hard time passing a lady walking this morning.   :| That's depressing, but at least I'm still getting out there, which makes me feel slightly better about myself.

I have really been struggling to motivate to work out. I felt like I had more energy but then I got hit with extreme fatigue again - plus it's so hot, even non-pregnant people are tired. Ha!

Ok, so seriously. Here are my goals for the week. I will swim at least 2x this week and I will go for some speedy walks or hikes W-F for at least 30min but hopefully more like 45-1hr. I will be more likely to do it if I get up in the morning - when it is not as hot. This weekend I am headed to the mountains so I plan to get a long hike in.

edited to add @AlabamaRedhead Yes! Yoga! I have been seriously slacking and I need to get back to it! It makes my body so happy.

  • My routine is either 30-45 minutes of walking a day or a pregnancy barre DVD. I change it up between the two. My walks are slow (and on the treadmill) due to the excessive heat. I just get winded too easily and I don't want to over do it, so slow and steady for me!
  • Well I've mostly been doing ok up till now, first tri wasn't terrible for me.  But since second tri started (last week?) I've puked due to gagging on vitamins and been too hot. And now I'm sick. I'm not ok with this turnaround.
Dr's appt today to see what's wrong. Ugh I want to be able to stand for 15 minutes without sweating or sleep vertically... or even seated got more than 2 hours without waking to throw up. Either of those would work.

Next week/after sickness, I'm going to love that this thread was started back up again
  • I've finally gotten back into running after a few weeks of headaches/nausea and not doing well in the heat. I've got Barre class tonight, hopefully followed by a 3 mile run. I will try to fit in another 3 miles before Sunday when I'm running a 5k to benefit Lou Gerhrig's research.

@Mylitta I hope you're feeling better soon! Pregnancy illness is the pits.

  • I'm afraid to run. My cervix is super long right now (twin pregnancies are highly susceptible to incompetent cervix/ preterm labor) and my OB told me to keep doing whatever I'm doing...... Which is not running ::sobs::

I'm walking and doing yoga every day. I think I might buy an elliptical or a bike trainer because my treadmill is taunting me in the basement :'( and walking is boring me, I need to get my heart rate up more!

Entering my food into MFP is stressing me out because I don't eat enough apparently. I'm supposed to get almost 100g of protein a day omg howwww???? But I'm finally able to get back to cooking and meal planning and eating real food again!

I'm trying to find something that's easy on my broken foot. I've been getting some walking in while wearing my boot, but I can easily over do it, then be in a lot of pain (and getting fussed at by H, which is also a pain, lol)! I'm trying out yoga tonight, but we'll see how it goes with the foot. Since it's my 5th metatarsal, I can shift my weight and it be okay, but it's definitely one off balance move away from a hot knife feeling. FX!! And way to go everyone else!

  • I was able to get back into the gym last week! BAM! If I am sure to eat a good meal about an hour before working out the nausea isn't so bad. SOOOO. I'm back to about 3-4 workouts a week.

I'm still working back into running though, I am running out of breath like crazy right now. I used to be able to just run 20 minutes straight at an incline, now I can barely go 3 minutes....

If I can't run long that day, I'll try and walk at as high an incline as I can, about %50-70% incline, for as long as I can. Better than nothing.

I made it to my regular yoga class last week for the first time since May, and it felt sooo good. Went again this morning, and am happy to be getting into a routine again!

I had taken a few prenatal yoga classes towards the end of 1st tri, but now I feel like they're too slow for me at this stage. I think they'll be great as I get further along. The only other physical activity I managed during the 1st trimester was walking, and even that was hit or miss depending on the weather and how I was feeling. I have a dog who needs exercise and I want to get back to taking long walks/easy hikes every day, but it's just too damn hot right now.

My plan for the next few weeks is to start doing Pilates again and then get into a good routine of yoga/Pilates/walking.

My last pregnancy I kept my runs up until 40 weeks, I'm not sure I want to go that long this time. This pregnancy I have also been running 3-4 times a week but it's so much harder. Before I had so much energy, but this time around I am so extremely tired but trying to fight through it. I thought I'd have my energy back by now, but doesn't look like it's happening.

I am so excited to hear that so many of us are starting to feel better and excited to get back into our routines. You ladies are really motivating me!!

Sometimes even though our workouts are not as fast as they used to be we have to just push forward and be proud that we are out there trying!!

I went to the gym with my husband this afternoon and climbed double stairs for 15minutes and rode the stand alone bike for 15min.

This evening I concurred the hill around my home again. It was so hard and I kept stopping and sitting on people's front lawns but I did it and stopped less then the first time I was out last week! Which feels great bc I can feel myself getting stronger!
  • Great job everyone!  I've still been sticking to my boot camp 4-5 times a week.  Even when I feel kind of blah (this morning) at least I don't have to think about what to do for my workout and can take it a bit easier... it's better than nothing!  Anyone have a good place to research what types of exercises should be limited/modified as we progress through our pregnancies?  We do a huge variety of stuff at my boot camp (including heavy sand bag/kettle bell stuff) and I want to make sure I know when I should be modifying different exercises.  Obviously I'm not doing anything I don't feel comfortable with - but I've been doing this boot camp for 3 years now and I don't want to inadvertently do something I shouldn't be.

  • I'm in awe of you guys!! I'm having such a hard time exercising... I work really long hours, and often need to keep working when I get home from the office. i tried a pregnancy dvd yesterday and it went surprisingly well, hopefully I can keep it up!
  • @kelseyh62 The only thing I've read is its ok to maintain activity you did regularly before pregnancy but to keep your intensity such that you can talk while exercising and don't lie flat on your back after 1st trimester (you can lay down just keep your head propped up on something so it's elevated)

I miss running outside!!! I almost feel like that would be more motivation, fresh air during this pregnancy is medication in itself. But I live in Texas, there's not such thing as 'outside activities' during the summer. Especially while pregnant, these hot flashes are killing me! D:

This thread is awesome! You all are so inspiring! I finally started to get some normal energy back on Monday! H and I went for a quick paddle and a walk and last night I went for a 2 hour hike before meeting a friend for dinner. Felt SO good!! We're putting the finishing touches on our two new paddleboards tonight (we built them) and plan to take them and the kayak up to a series of alpine lakes that are about 30 minutes from our house this weekend. Cannot wait.
  • Thank you for this thread! I haven't been doing workouts for the past few days because the tiny studio we're staying in right now has super creaky and unfinished wood floors. Dont really want to disturb the downstairs neighbors that much or end up with splinters! We've been walking for about 4-5 hours per day and have been going up and down our six flights of stairs to and from the apartment every day. It helps somewhat but I'm ready to have regular workouts again!
  • Yesterday it was cloudy in the afternoon so I managed to get in a 45 min walk brisk walk in. It was SO refreshing to be outside! Today I will go swimming after work!

  • Quick question: Can you do hot yoga while pregnant? What do you all think? If I remember vaguely, back in college I would frequent a hot yoga class & the instructor was pregnant (when I was going she was about 7-8 months). However, she TAUGHT it, didn't really do much of the movements. Just wondering.........

Also, reading these have really given me so much motivation! I feel like a zombie when I get home from work in the evenings but I am going to try to get out there more, even for a walk!

  • Agree on the no hot yoga. I did hot vinyasa yoga religiously for years and the RE and OB told me no. I had an instructor that was also a dear friend of mine that taught right up until she was due, but I wouldn't have done that either. I never asked her what her doc said, but I wouldn't have been comfortable with it. It's simply too hot.
  • I'd say no to hot yoga. I remember in my class there was a mama in there, who was like 8 months. She tried to get in the "coolest" area and she struggled. I was shocked the instructor allowed her in. But she mainly did very modified poses, not what most of us were doing.

I'm even careful with doing regular yoga. The prenatals are way slower, but they get the job done.

Another no for hot yoga. Aside from potentially creating too much heat and getting your heart rate up too high, it's generally pretty detoxifying and you are not really supposed to detox while pregnant. Also, I think the heat, on top of pregnancy hormones, can increase your risk of overextending muscles/ligaments.

I actually gave up hot yoga after a few months of trying to get pregnant, and I still really miss it. Something to look forward to next spring I guess.
  • @nolemama24 It's too bad isn't it bc hot yoga is really awesome! But I think the same rule applies to hot tubs we need to stay away from heat so that our heart rates don't become elevated. I also read somewhere that when you are hot your body pumps the blood to your skin to cool it down.

I concurred another walk this morning and can you believe that I had a dude in an unmarked white van honk and whistle at me... (seriously.. I don't think that has happened since highschool) it wasn't until he was passing me that he saw 'the' belly. I think he felt ...just...plain...weird about it afterwards (judging by the facial reaction I caught a glimpse of as he drove by) he looked confused...sorry...embarrassed.. lol

45 minutes took 55 minutes I had to stop a little longer then usual bc I was starting the feel out of breath.
  •  Agree on the hot yoga front.

I decided to actually take my 15 min brake and walk around the perimeter of the hospital grounds where I work. It was 0.85 mile and took like 15 min. Perfect! I need to do this for my breaks that I never take!

You can still go to those same studios/teachers in the evenings, even if it's not a prenatal class if you just tell them you can't make the other times and need modifications they'll walk you through it no problem! (But ditto on the no hot yoga, ESPECIALLY no Bikram)

    1) Does walking around Costco tonight count as exercise??? (lol ;) )

    2) A different type of exercise but nonetheless important - Kegals. Does anyone have a way to remember to do them? I will, when I think about it. But I'm bad to remember vajayjay exercises.

  • I'm just sticking to walking for now. And probably forever lol. I have always struggled with enjoying excercise - if it weren't for my Fitbit which makes me oddly motivated I would hardly ever move. Occasionally I'll get back into running with a 5k trainer app but a few weeks after finishing the program I always fall back off the wagon. I would love to be able to do a 10K but that's going to have to be a future goal. But I'll try to focus on the positive - Today makes three days I've walked atleast an hour.

Doesn't it feel awesome to get that energy boost while working out on your break?? :)
  • @nolemama24 I'm continuing to do hot yoga after reading the studies and whatnot. I've been doing it for years and tolerate it easily. Mine isn't crazy hot like 105F or something and I know I stay under the 102F they caution about (I'm curious to actually take my temp when I go throughout class, too). I wouldn't recommend it, just sharing what I do.

I planned to go for a long walk this morning, but ended up opting for more sleep instead :/

Then I went the pool in the afternoon with a friend and her 2 toddlers. After I puked in the locker room (for the first time this whole pregnancy!) I chased her crazy fast 2 year old around a lot. I'm counting that as exercise and calling it a day.
  • Tore myself out of bed this morning to climb this darn hill around our home. I only stopped to say hi to a doggie so that is progress!! The first time I think I stopped 4 times!

Unfortunately I'm exhausted and going back to bed for a twenty minute snooze.
  • you guys are all doing great!!! i am keeping up with my daily bike rides to work (about 40 minutes total of biking) and walking my dogs daily. i also try to go for a 3 mile walk during my lunch break a few times/week. but UGH i just cannot get myself to the gym to lift weights or keep up with any of that. I'm starting to get some back/neck issues I think from my dwindling muscles, so I need to get back at it. i also have been sleeping in on all of my early morning runs, which I don't know why i'm doing because they make me so happy. maybe tomorrow morning... I have found myself being SO much slower on my bike rides, walks, runs, etc. And it's not fatigue slow--it's just slow. i don't know if I'm getting out of shape or it's the extra blood supply or what, but slow. blah. okay, tomorrow I will run.
