3rd Trimester

Another induction question - WWYD?

I'll be 40 wks tomorrow. I get weekly NST and U/S. So far baby is looking perfect, but he's been measuring kinda big all along. (Not HUGE, but they're saying he's well into the 8 lb range). I have not progressed at all the past 3 times I've been checked. (1 cm, 10% effaced). The doc is willing to induce me if I want... but he'd go as far as 41.5 weeks without doing so. I need to decide at tomorrow's appt how I want to proceed, especially if there's no natural progression. WWYD? Hold off on the induction and hope something happens on it's own? Go ahead and schedule it for later this week? I HATE risking a CS (as I know it's more likely with an induction) but I also hate just waiting and having him get even bigger if my body still doesn't progress (IE, delaying the inevitable). My anxiety level is through the roof (even though physically, I feel fine). TIA!!!

Re: Another induction question - WWYD?

  • Here's one of those annoying answers: only you can decide. :)

Your baby's growth should slow at this point, so he's not likely to be gaining .5lb/wk at this point, and of course you know that all growth measurements are only loose estimates.

My OB thinks that my baby might be on the big side *for me* but she is doing the same as your doctor and holding off on induction until close to 42 weeks. In my personal opinion it's best just to wait, particularly if your doctor is fine with waiting. It's very, very rare for a woman's body to make a baby that is truly too big to birth vaginally.

  • Congrats on making it to the end!!! You are so close! I think if I had the option, I would do the induction, but it's just personal preference. ?Good luck with whatever you decide.?
  • If it was me, I would probably get on the induction schedule for this weeken or early next week and then wait and see what this week brings.  I don't think being induced at 41-ish weeks is too early at all (In fact, my OB really pushes induction by 41 weeks unless someone is really resistant to it.  They do not like to push things out to the 42nd week).

  • Personally, I would wait. Your baby will not stay in there forever."No natural progression" sounds like your body is just going to hold on to this baby forever - which logically just doesn't make sense.  If labor hasn't started then (IMO) it isn't ready to start. As long as everything is looking good I would give it another week. 40 weeks is an estimate and so is your baby's weight.
  • Like the PP said, it's your choice.  But, if you are feeling fine and LO is fine, sounds like holding off on the induction is okay too.  Best of luck in your decision and to you!!
  • This would be me. I'm 50% effaced and 0 cm. I scheduled my induction for 41 weeks 1 day (the 18th). This still gives him some time to come out on his own. Right now he's about 8 pounds 6... any longer and I might as well have a c section. According to my doctor since my cervix is doing something, just not progressing, it's likely the induction will be successful. She told me usually the induction won't work if your cervix is hard and closed. Still hoping I go into labor myself. Labor dust your way! GL!
  • I would say only take it as far as your body can handle.  I personally would wait, but that's only because I had a very long induction with DS and am really not looking forward to this next one (next week if I don't go on my own).  My first induction I was barely 1cm and 50% effaced and I had 37 hours of labor, almost heading to a c/s.

Maybe wait to see what they say about his size at the u/s?

  • I'm in the same boat and I'm going to try to wait.  I go back Monday so I'm not sure if they'll let me wait all week next week without picking an induction date, but I'm sure going to try.
  • If it were me, I would wait a few days past EDD and decide...since EDD is a guesstimate and so are the weight estimations, I would want to wait a few days to see how things look. I think I'd probably go with an induction around 41 weeks.
  • Personally, I would wait. I'm one of those trying to go natural though so I'm very against being induced myself. I'm also 10 weeks behind you and don't know what it feels like to be in ur shoes. you're the only one that can make this decision but you body obviously isn't ready yet
  • If it were ME I would schedule the induction for the end of the week.  FWIW, my son was 8.5lbs at 39 weeks when I was induced (because of pre-e) and I pushed him out just fine. 8+ lbs at 40 weeks doesn't sounds that big to me, so try not to stress about his size).

But like others have said, only you can decide. Wink

  • I would wait.  I chose to be induced wih my first baby at 41 weeks 1 day, because I was miserable.  My labor was 32 hours long and quite difficult, I hated being "strapped" to the bed with monitors and IV's.  That being said, they told me she was 7.5-8lbs the day before I had a 9lb 1oz baby girl!  So you can't really go by the guesstimate of baby's size.

  • Due dates are "estimated" for a reason.  I think babies come when they are ready to come.  Unless there is a true medical need, personally I would not choose to induce.

  • If my cervix was favorable for an induction I would probably go ahead and set an induction date for just after my due date. If my cervix was not favorable I wouldn't opt for the induction.

  • congrats on making it to 40 weeks!  i was induced but I only agreed because i was already 3cm  80% on my own.  my induction went picture perfect (for being a natural induction...foley bulb, no pit, walking, etc).  I ended up having a vag deliv.  But i still did stall at 7cm for about 4 hrs and they threatened c/s.  I had them start the pit and then I went to 10 in an hour.

If I were you i would not get induced unless medically necessary if you are only 1cm dilated.  Your body/baby just doesnt seem ready yet, and from what i have heard, inductions fail and go to c/s the most when you start out not having progressed any on your own

good luck in the end it is your own decision!  your baby will be here so soon! :)
