Re: Giant Gear Thread

  • This is probably a long shot but... Has anyone used the City Go car seat (made by Baby Jogger, the same company that makes the City Mini)?  I think it's pretty new (looks like it came out in April).  There are only like 4 reviews on it online and they are pretty mixed.  We were thinking of getting the Chicco Keyfit 30 but for some reason the City Go felt lighter.  The Chicco Keyfit has tons of great reviews.  We were also thinking of getting the City Mini but it seems like the City Go doesn't fit with it any better than any other car seat so I'm not sure...

FTM here - this is what is on my registry so far...

Stroller: Chicco Liteway Plus, I like that it can be used with a car seat or as an umbrella stroller

    Car Seat: Chicco Keyfit 30

Baby Carrier(s): I've registered for a moby wrap and a Lillebaby Complete All Seasons

High Chair:  Fisher Price space saver - it fits on a normal dining chair.  DH is really concerned about baby stuff taking up too much space (eyeroll)

Crib: Delta Chalet - it's white with a dark trim

Glider:  Undecided - I need to try a few out, but it's super important to me.

Dresser: Delta Chalet to match the crib

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device:  Graco Glider Lite LX gliding swing and a fisher price bouncer.  A friend talked me into putting a mamaroo on the registry but it's crazy expensive I can't imagine someone buying it.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): I don't have anything specific picked out for these items.

    Baby bottles: Glass Philips avent

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable):  Pampers!  I'd love to do cloth but I realistically I think we'd hate using them.

Other must-haves:  Graco Pack 'n Play and a boppy

  • I'm an FTM and there is one thing I've put much thought into is the swing. I really want one of the 4Moms mamaRoo. It will probably be our big splurge for baby. I might be able to borrow one from a friend, but this is something we both totally want.
It was our big thing we wanted too! I found a brand new 2015 version still in the box at a consignment sale yesterday for a little more than half off! MIL bought it for us even though I wasn't expecting her too! If you have your heart set on one I'd look at consignment sales if you are comfortable doing so.

Not a big gear item, but has anyone used a nursing poncho? I'm looking at one like this https://www.etsy.com/listing/252843461/multi-functional-car-seat-cover-and?ref=shop_home_feat_3

I like the appearance of it and the coverage better than the ones that just hang around your neck. I think it might be useful to throw in my bag to cover myself while pumping at work too.

    Thoughts?

@emisi I'm also planning on trying the Kiinde Twist system - looks awesome with minimal pieces to wash!

Does anyone else have experience with the Kiinde system?  For the most part all the reviews I've seen are pretty positive.

  • @cgss11 I like that poncho. It looks like it will give good coverage. Since it will be winter I am looking to make an infinity scarf that is also a nursing cover.

  • Anyone else thinking about getting something like an Owlet monitor (https://www.owletcare.com/) in addition to a video/audio monitor?
    EQD born 12/15!

  • Anyone else thinking about getting something like an Owlet monitor (https://www.owletcare.com/) in addition to a video/audio monitor?
We were thinking of it.  I'm curious to hear other people's experiences with it (or similar items) if they have one.
  • Anyone else thinking about getting something like an Owlet monitor (https://www.owletcare.com/) in addition to a video/audio monitor?
I'm definitely interested in this. I can envision myself not sleeping at all early on because of worrying too much.
  • Be careful with the Owlet, I know someone who used it but something was wrong with it when they bought it, they weren't aware of the problems with it at the time but their child got second degree burns because the monitor overheated.
  • I'm a FTM but my best gals all had babies between June 2015 and June 2016 so they helped me with the registries and also are giving us a bunch of stuff. So...

Where are you registering (if at all)?  Target and Amazon, completion perks and easy to maintain, as well as easily accessible to shower guests

Anywhere you would advise NOT registering? Not sure, I wanted places that were accessible to all our family and friends, were easy and friendly to work with, and if possible had some sort of completion discount.

Stroller: Baby Jogger City Mini, I also found the adapter that will fit the Britax we've been given. Bonus!

Car Seat: A girlfriend gave me her less-than-a-year-old Britax B-Safe and an extra base

Baby Carrier(s): I have been given an Ergo 360 with the infant insert as well as a Boba wrap

High Chair: Graco 4-in-1 Seating System. Also, we have been given a Bumbo floor seat from a friend.

Crib: Delta Children Haven 4-in-1 in white. For the mattress we picked out a Sealy brand and for the crib sheets and changing pad covers we selected a couple of prints from Carousel Designs.

Glider: Baby Relax (Tinsley Swivel Glider in Grey) - also hoping to get the matching ottoman

Dresser: We are re-finishing the dresser that was in SO's room when he was growing up.

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: We've been given the following: Graco Duet Connect LX Swing and Bouncer, Chicco Lil Driver Activity Center, as well as a Fisher-Price Gym and a Fisher-Price Jumperoo.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): Boudreaux's butt paste has worked wonders on all the babes, even my nephew's super sensitive skin. Also, added Lanolin for my nips!

Baby bottles: Only registered for a few because we won't know what she likes until she's here. I did however register for some Medela brand (since that is what I have for my pump) and some Tommee Tippee. All the girl's kiddos loved that brand.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): For newborn diapers I'm going to try both the honest brand and pampers sensitive. Once she's big enough for cloth diapering I plan to go with BumGenius pocket diapers.

Other must-haves: Medela breast pump. If you have not called your insurance yet to see if your covered, it's not too early! Mine is, but I'm also getting one from a friend and just replacing the essential parts. I'll keep one at home and one at the office. Also going to get a hand pump to keep in my purse.

My girlfriends also suggested adding wipes to get the supply started. I'm going with sensitive skin stuff because diaper rashes seem to run rampant in both our families. Also suggested to add to the registry were nursing pads (Charlie Banana Reusable were referred to me), milk storage bags and nipple shields, a Nosefrieda and digital thermometer.

I added a couple of  Aden and Anais burp clothes and swaddlers because I love them and think they're so sweet looking.

Also, added a soundspa for LO and a humidifier to keep in her room. Both were strongly recommended.

Things you're going to skip or were not useful last time: In lieu of a bassinette we're doing a Pack-n-play (Graco Element Playard). We decided not to do a video monitor. None of our friends have gotten any use out of theirs and we're both worried that if we had one we would just stay up all night watching the monitor. Our house is 1200 sq. feet so we feel that an audio monitor will be just fine.

It was strongly suggested to me that I not register for clothing or blankets, since those will be given anyways. I did, however, add a snowsuit to the registry because it will be very cold here in the winter and we're outside a lot. On that note, we were given a JJ Cole Bundleme for her infant seat.

I only put on a couple of pacifiers. I found from all my friends that babies can be very picky about them so I figured we'd try a couple and then see what works.

Not registering for a wipe warmer or bottle sanitizer. My friends all have them and never use them. If we change our minds then we'll get them from the girls.

Just FYI, I was looking at the upcoming baby deals for Prime day tomorrow, and the Kiinde starter kit is on there. Several other things too obviously, but I see a lot of people have mentioned that.
  • Has anyone tried the city select stroller with a second seat added? It seems smaller that some other double strollers.

  • @dmontgo I loved my jujube I got 7 years ago. Not sure they make the same model anymore but the smart features like the wipe clean, crumb drain etc were wonderful. I am going for a backpack style this time around and looking at the BFF. I think you will be very happy with your JJB

@zubenescamali Thank you! This was from the "Be Right Back" line. I love how you can wipe it clean!
  • I am a second time mom.
Where are you registering (if at all)?  I registered at Amazon because of the 15% off. I am not telling anyone about the registry, it's just the stuff I want to buy at a discounted price.

Anywhere you would advise NOT registering?
I heard other mom's suggest staying away from Buy Buy Baby. I never registered there, too high pricing.

Stroller: Baby trend travel system with jogging stroller. Love it. Now I'm getting the Baby trend sit n stand stroller since I will be hauling a 2 yr old and a newborn.

Car Seat: Baby trend infant seat, Safety 1st Newbury convertible car seat.

Baby Carrier(s): Baby K'tan. My baby liked it at first but as he grew it got too tight for us. This time around I am getting the Tula and infant insert.

High Chair: eddie bauer. Love it. Got it at target. So classy looking and 2 yr old still fits!

    Crib: Graco 4 in 1.

    Glider: didn't get one

    Dresser: had one refurbished

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: Rock n Play. This thing is the best! All mom's need this! I kept my son in it for the first 2 months by our bed then put him in his crab. Smooth transition for us.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): whatever was given to us at shower.

Baby bottles: Lansinoh Momma. Best bottle going from breast and bottle.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): Pampers Swaddlers until 6 months then I switched to HEB brand. This one will be the same unless allergic reaction to the diapers.

Other must-haves: Earth Mama Angel Baby new mama bottom spray. THIS STUFF IS GREAT POST PARTUM. So soothing. Much better than the dermoblast the hospital gave me. That stuff burned before it helped.

Things you're going to skip or were not useful last time: swaddling.
  • FTM here, this is what I *think* we'll end up doing.  Lots of hand me downs from family.

Where are you registering (if at all)?  Right now we have registries on Amazon and Babies R Us.  I would like to avoid Buy Buy Baby (just to not have 3) but they have those 20% off coupons so I'm debating putting our stroller and car seat in a BBB registry.
Anywhere you would advise NOT registering?

Stroller: I think we've settled on the City Mini GT.

    Car Seat:  Chicco Keyfit 30

Baby Carrier(s): Hand me down, not sure of the brand yet.  If it doesn't work out, I have my eye on a Ergo 360 but I haven't actually tried one out.

High Chair: Hand me down, not sure of brand.

Crib: Hand me down, Davinci Emily (will be getting a new mattress for it)

Glider: Not sure yet but going to figure this out soon.

Dresser: We have NO ROOM for a dresser currently.  We are hoping to buy a house within 6 months of baby's birth so will probably just get one in our new place.

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: Hand me down swing.  We'll see how it goes.  I'm not sure it's in the best shape, but it works and if baby hates it we'll be happy we didn't waste our money on a new one.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): I registered for Aveeno and Babyganics.  Might get rid of Aveeno and pick out some Burts Bees instead.  Not sure.

Baby bottles: Registered for a few Dr. Brown's glass bottles and some Comotomo bottles.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): We're going to do cloth: prefolds + Thirsties covers for NB and then will get some pockets and maybe some all in ones for older ages.  Already got some LBBs (pockets) off of Amazon, which are cheapies/made in China.  We will probably check out some other brands at a local cloth diapering store before making any other decisions on what to add to our registry.  Plus, I think we'll wait and see how it goes once baby is here before spending a ton of $$ on anything.

Other must-haves: We're getting a hand me down bassinet, play mat, bumbo.  Need to figure out a good monitor - preferably a video monitor.

Things you're going to skip or were not useful last time:
  • I am not sure if anyone knows this but if you update your Target registry there is a function on there that you can add any product to your Target registry no matter what website you find it on. I haven't tried it yet, but there are products that Target does not carry that I want, so rather than having several different registries, everything is in one place

  • Where are you registering (if at all)?
Anywhere you would advise NOT registering? STM so not planning to register although I do know babies r us runs a coupon special for anything you buy yourself off of your registry

Stroller: I like the small umbrollers, even found one with a pouch on the backside so you can throw a few diapers wipes bottle etc. in it... Our babes are December babies so the whole newborn in an umbroller thing won't be a problem, at least for me since I hate the snow and won't be outside much until it's warmer.
And bonus I still have DD stroller so no need to buy new

Baby Carrier(s): last time around I had a jeep carrier I hated it!! It completely turned me off, but this time around I think I'll give it another go with a different carrier(hoping for some good input on this one)

High Chair: I like the space savers that sit directly onto the chair, we took that thing everywhere with DD... It even reclines which was nice for beginning stages of baby foods

Crib: I'll be using DD crib, best thing about it is the drawer underneath to put sheets and blankets in

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: we used a borrowed swing with DD, this time around a plug is a must!!! Batteries get pricey!

Baby bottles: I learned the hard way with DD I had gotten a really nice set of expensive bottles opened them all up, breastfed for 4 months then pulled the bottles out and she refuses to use them!! After trying every fancy bottle out there, my girl like the cheapest of the cheap $1 each Walmart bottles.... Every baby is different don't get hung up on what everyone else is using

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): disposable

Other must-haves: swaddlers were a lifesaver the first time around, plan to use them again

  • Where are you registering (if at all)?
Im a STM with almost 5 years in between. We moved past March and I sold almost all of DS's baby things, so we're registering again. Plus, this one is a girl! So we have stared a registry on Amazon. This is probably the only place we will register.

Anywhere you would advise NOT registering? Walmart was horrible with us last time. We live in a small town so the nearest babies r us is about an hour away, so that was our only option people actually bought from. But they were extremely rude. Hopefully we just had a rare bad experience.

Stroller: We have a baby trend jogging stroller since we run. Otherwise, were thinking of skipping the stroller this time. We didn't use it a lot and im
    a fan of baby wearing!

Car Seat: Safety 1st onboard 35 air

    Baby Carrier(s): Baby K'tan breeze

High Chair: Not sure yet, but probably a space saver since we have a cramped dining room.

Crib: Dream On Me Violet 7in1 is what we're looking at right now

Glider: We have one from DS

Dresser: Still browsing. Trying to find one to refinish or a pretty white one!

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: Fisher Price cradle n swing, sassy cuddle bug bouncer

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): Aveeno calming comfort

Baby bottles: We used drop ins last time which were really nice. But I'm researching other options this time.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): We're going to try cloth after the newborn stage. I'm definitely thinking of going all in twos or prefolds with covers. So many options!!

Other must-haves: Bumbo (with tray), boppy pillow, swaddleme wraps! (DS didn't sleep through the night until
these), gowns (so much easier for midnight diaper changes)

Things you're going to skip or were not useful last time: Definitely a wipes warmer! We had one but never used it. We just held them in our hand for a bit. Plus we didn't want DS to get used to having them all the time to avoid it's when we were out.
  • Hi all - this might have been mentioned before but I didn't see it or might be common knowledge and I'm behind the curve... I'm a FTM working on my registry and while at BuyBuy Baby this weekend they informed me that they are part of Bed Bath and Beyond and will accept those 20% coupons Bed Bath and Beyond sends out.  They will also accept more than one coupon at a time (if you have two 20% off coupons you can use them on two different items in the same transaction).  So then I called Babies R Us and asked and they will also accept those and all other competitors coupons (as long as they are printed and not expired).  Thought that was a really good bit of info to pass on because 20% can be a lot on some of these big ticket items!
  • @KatieJo1205 I think it depends on the bru you go to. Since the city and hour from me doesn't have a BBB, the bru does not consider them a competitor so won't accept the coupons. But the city 3 hours from here has both and the coupons are accepted.

    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • The BBB coupons also have a lot of exclusions for expensive items.  So for example, we want a baby jogger stroller but it is excluded from the coupon.  Amazon will let us use our registry completion discount on it though.
  • @penelope4612 - really?  That is a bummer.  They gave me the impression that there was just one or two brands that would be excluded (I was specifically asking about the gliders and they said all but one can use the 20% off).  Guess I will have to look into it a little more.
  • Question: can you create a registry on Amazon and never really share it with anyone, then take advantage of the discount? I'm pretty sure it would really help with the ridiculously expensive stroller/car seat combo I've been coveting.

Yes, you can! You can mark your registry as private or you can just choose not to share it. I haven't made mine public yet and it says that I'll get my completion discount on October 1 and it even marks the individual items in my registry that are eligible for the coupon, since not everything is.
  • Question: can you create a registry on Amazon and never really share it with anyone, then take advantage of the discount? I'm pretty sure it would really help with the ridiculously expensive stroller/car seat combo I've been coveting.
Yup! We marked ours private. I actually already bought everything with the completion discount cuz I entered my due date a few months sooner than it was. I bought all the furniture and running stroller along with a few smaller items...I couldn't wait until Oct! I'm too much of a planner/ need things done type of person. And since I never intended to share it with people there wouldn't be confusion.

And not everything qualifies for the discount but a lot does. It has to be sold by Amazon and a baby/kid item from what I could tell. I tried to add a Garmin watch and that didn't have the blue banner saying it qualified lol. Can't hurt to try though!

    STM, not registering

Stroller/Car Seat: We had an evenfo travel system. I'm not sure what model but from a brief glance at their website it looks like the evenflo vive

Baby Carrier(s): We used a basic ring sling when she was extra little and switched to a babyhawk mei tai carrier around 4/6 months. I loved both and recommend them highly. I wore her all the time and these were both comfortable and durable. I'm planning on using them both this time around as well.

High Chair: We had a second-hand chair that strapped to the table. I liked it okay but it doesn't work on all tables and it won't work on the table we have now, so I'm looking for something new.

Crib: My uncle built our crib.

Glider: Didn't have one but wished I did, we'll get one this time so I'm on the lookout.

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: Used the rock n play pretty much constantly for the first few months. She uses it for her dolls now.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): burt's bees for nearly everything. Boudreaux buttpaste for diaper rash (I swear by this stuff)

Baby bottles: We used medela but only because it was the first kind we got and she didn't reject them. They were fine.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): For cloth we used fuzzibunz, thirsties, and bumgenius, I liked Fuzzibunz pockets the best. For disposables we used seventh generation. I like them because they are unbleached and unscented, plus they are one of the two kinds they sell at our co-op.

  • For people registering in more than one place, are you register for the same things/types of things on both? Or different stuff different places?

I've got my Amazon register pretty much done. But I feel like I need one at a physical store for people who aren't big online shoppers. But that opens the door for duplicates...

@tinattt23 I put different things on each depending on where it was the best price after discounts.

Eta: mine are private so I'll be buying what I need so after discount price is all that mattered to me.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • @tinattt23 I'm not registering anywhere except Amazon but if I was, I would put the cheaper things on the registry for the physical store and keep the more expensive ones on Amazon, but that really depends on what you've registered for and what the completion discount is for the other registry. I don't expect anyone to buy our Britax travel system we've registered for, but it's nice that we'll get a completion discount on it since we registered for it on Amazon.
  • @tinattt23 - I'm registering at BRU and Amazon.  For some items that we'll want doubles of (i.e., sheets, bottles), I put some on each registry.  I tried to put items in each price range on both.  If something was clearly less expensive in one place, I put it on that registry. If it is something that is cute (burp cloths, halo sleep sac), I put it on the BRU because I figure people like picking stuff like that out in person, although I didn't honestly didn't register for much of that stuff bc I figure people will just buy it regardless.  Also, if it's something not available in store anyway (like the stroller we want in the color we want it), I put it on Amazon.
  • I don't know if this is on people's radar or not... it wasn't on mine because I've personally never bought a glider before.  But we went to BBB to look at gliders and ended up picking out one that was "custom" (we picked the fabric and the color of the wood) and they told us it would be 4-6 weeks for delivery.  However, another couple was looking at a different glider and were told that one was 14-16 weeks.  So I guess just reaching out to warn folks that sometimes the furniture you want might not be available right away.
  • @penelope4612 I ran across this late last week. Ordered our glider at BRU and it will take 12 weeks since there are none currently in the warehouse, so it needs to be made.
  • ea301ea301 member
Related: does anyone have experience with Dutailier gliders? I like the look of them but not sure if the exposed moving parts are problematic or if I need swivel capability in addition to gliding...
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @ea301 - I don't have any experience with Dutailier, but I would highly recommend going to a store and sitting in the gliders before buying.  DH and I went and tried out gliders at BRU and BBB (it's probably location specific, but our BBB had way more gliders to try out than BRU - like 15+ vs 4) and had plans to go to a furniture store if BBB didn't work out.

I was not at all planning on getting the type of glider we purchased - although looks kind of like the one you want (Sona Plus from Storytime: https://www.besthf.com/best/Storytime/Glider-Rockers/items/SONA).  I wanted one that looked more like an arm chair.  But after trying them all, it was the right amount of soft and firm, offered good lower back support, and you can lean your head all the way back and still have cushioning there (not true of a lot of the arm chair ones, and we are not tall people).  We were able to use our BBB 20% off coupon so it ended up not being that expensive, and it came with the ottoman.  They did offer us the option of a locking version vs an non locking version - I'd assume the locking version is safer for little hands but honestly can't imagine DH and I bothering to lock/unlock again and again so we went with nonlocking, which was cheaper.  Plus it was customizeable so we got to pick out the color of the wood and the type and color of the fabric.

    Definitely go to the store!
  • STM: I'll probably register if we have a girl but only to get the registry discount for all the girly shit I know I'll end up buying!

    Stroller/Car Seat:
We had the Britax B-Agile travel system. Absolutely loved but didn't use as much as I thought I would due to babywearing.

Baby Carrier(s): I had a K-tan for when DS was a newborn and now we have a Tula. Highly recommend both. We're going to get a toddler Tula for DS since he still loves being worn so new baby can use the tula. Considering getting a Tula insert but haven't made that decision yet.

High Chair: I absolutely wouldn't recommend our high chair. It has two "pads" and food is always getting caught in there and its a PIA to clean. I would recommend getting a minimalist high chair.

Crib: We got our crib from IKEA and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Glider: I wouldn't recommend/not recommend our glider so I won't comment much on it. I think a glider is an absolute necessity though!

Swing/Rock N Play/other rocking device: We had a swing that was fine. Again, this is necessity but I have no strong feelings on ours.

Baby care (ie, lotions, shampoo/soap, diaper creams, etc): We use the lavender Johnsons and Johnsons and I'm 100% convinced this is why my newborn slept so well. I HIGHLY recommend Pinxav for diaper cream!

Baby bottles: We used Tommee Tippee for bottles and my DS took to them right away! He didn't get a bottle until six weeks at least and I found these are the most "boob-like". I also am aware all kids take to these differently so I'd just recommend having a few different types on hand.

Diaper brands (cloth or disposable): My son did great with LUVS from Amazon (so cheap) so we are still on those. But, this is all about body type so you may have to try different ones.

In general, I would say babies are weird so don't stock up on too much of "one brand" of things like diapers, bottles, babycare stuff because someone else says their kid of loves it. Just have a few, save your gift cards and send your husband/partner/family/friend/mailman out to get more when you find out what works for your LO.
