Re: Weekly Randoms (7/11)

  • Does anyone have any good veggie snack ideas for a picky kid?

By picky, I mean he tends to prefer veggies over most meat, which may be just a phase.  But I feel like all he does is snack all day instead of a real meal.  I've been giving him celery sticks with PB and raisins, which he loves and makes me feel better because he's getting protein from PB.

  • Have you tried hummus? I know it seems strange, but I have several friends with picky toddlers who will eat it. It's a great healthy protein source.

    He does like hummus.

Maybe I can try to make him a veggie wrap with hummus on a whole wheat tortilla.  He'd probably love that, thank you!

    Stuck in the box!

I have a friend who did muffin tin meals with her toddlers.  Stack the cups with different things like veggies,  hummus, cheese,  etc,  and call it a meal.   It's still snacking,  but concentrated and fun.

What about like broccoli and cheese egg quiches? Something where you can make it in a muffin tin and add as many different veggies and cheese as you want.
  • Another one I used to do a lot when babysitting was "fajitas."  Put a little cheese (plus veggies or chicken or whatever he'll eat) on a tortilla and heat it up in the microwave for just long enough to melt it and then fold it half.
  • Does he do smoothies? If you are concerned about protein: add cottage cheese. Skim milk powder is also a good addin for getting more protein. And Greek yogurt. Does he like veggie dips?
  • I've never thought of smoothies but that's a great idea!

These are all awesome ideas, I'm going to try them this week.

  • @BumpasaurusRex my daughter is the same way. She loves veggie burgers- they heat up fast in the microwave. I buy the ones with lots of beans for protein!

Mine does not willingly eat veggies either. It's a constant fight. I can get away with throwing veggies in tomato sauce or meat sauce as he doesn't care to go looking for them at that point.

I also make fruit + veggie smoothies. It usually goes over very well.

  • I fell into the daycare rabbit hole today.  ahhhh.

My work has a daycare, but it has had some issues this year.  A couple of the teachers were let go and there was a TON of turnover.  The tuition is cheaper than most places, but you also dont get the tax credit.  The issue is also that I don't work close to our house.  This would leave me with basically 100% of the responsibility of drop-off and pick-up unless something super unusual was going on.

If we went with something closer to our house DH could handle drop-off because he doesn't have to be at work until a little later than I do, and then I could handle pick up.

I'm not qualified to pick out a day care!

  • @FerForShort Is the quality of care equal? If both places are equal and price doesn't matter I would probably go closer to home so my husband could do the drop off and I could have more time to get to work. If price matters but everything else is equal I would choose the cheaper option. And of course if one place offers better quality care I would go there either way. Is there reason the turn over was high or why the teachers were let go.

  • @FerForShort wait is the daycare AT your work or just close to it?  From my experience almost all day cares with children under 2.5 have a crazy turn around because they pay crap.
  • @FerForShort while daycare teacher turnover is something that raises a flag and requires investigation - just about every daycare (unless it's one provider in home) is going to experience periods of turnover. The reasons behind the turnover is important.

In the daycare we are at now, we LOVED the director but we were so so on the infant room teachers at the time. Shorty after DD started, both teachers left (one voluntarily the other was fired). One of the women who replaced her I absolutely adore and I am going to request this baby be with her again this time around. So it worked out well for us.

Her current main toddler teacher is leaving at the end of the summer to get her masters in speech pathology and work in a school system, so her reason for turnover doesn't worry me although I will miss her. They have already hired her replacement and they are getting the replacement up to speed and slowly transitioning more to her. This also gives the kids time to adjust to a new adult in the room.

our daycare is great about communicating turnover and taking time to ensure a smooth transition (ex a floater may spend more time in a room before and after a transition to help/be a familiar face). The director and assistant director routinely take the time to play one on one with my daughter especially when she is having a rough day (poor sleep or when she is transitioning rooms) which I love.

It is also super amazing that our daycare has live cameras I can access via a secured site so I can watch her play all day.

  • Thanks for the insight ladies!! Who knew daycare could be such a black hole! We are going to make some appointments to tour my work daycare along with a handful that are closer to home. Hopefully that will help with the decision.

@blush64 I'm not sure how equal the quality of care is. I have some good friends who have their kids at the work daycare and plan on getting some pretty candid advice from them. Obviously at the end of the day I plan on choosing the place where we feel our child will be the best taken care of, but if all things are equal is where I'm running into what would be more convienent.

@PerraSucia it is across the street, but it is 100% dedicated to kids of parents who work at my company.

@angeltennis3 it is my understanding that the teachers that were fired was because they were rough with some kids. I also know that a lot of the parents had some problems with the director. Since then a new director has been hired. I know that any daycare could have a bad teacher so I hate to make a judgement based on a few people, but gosh it's such a big decision.
  • @FerForShort not to sound like a boob pusher, but man if you're planning on BFing and were close enough to nurse a few times a day versus pump, I would drive my kid all over town with me.  When DS was a tiny, it was a lot easier to have him near my office than the house because if I lagged at work and was 15 minutes late I knew I wouldn't be effed in getting him in time.  H still did the morning things, like got the bag ready and took care of him while I got dressed, so I just used him to carpool. I don't know what you do for work, but it really worked out for me.  Now he's older and in preschool near our house and I'm always freaking out about leaving on time to get him because I have a job where people will run into you in the hallway and ask a 20 minute question.
  • I finally heard back from the nurse. I have to stop the PIO injections for 2 days and use a suppositories/pills combination. I have started coughing for 5-10 minutes directly after my shot and she said it sounds like an allergic reaction. I actually had the same reaction several times but this week it has been every shot. I really hate the shots but I  nervous to switch because the doctor really prefers them. I try the shots again on Thursday and if I am still coughing I have to return to the doctor.

Two weeks and 2 days can't pass fast enough to stop all of this and just continue a regular pregnancy. I am still so thankful I am not suffering like some are.
  • @FerForShort, I worked in daycares in a prior career, and bad director was the first thing that popped into my mind when you mentioned what your work daycare was like.  In my experience, bad directors breed drama, and drama breeds turnover.  Even though the pay is abysmal (a huge problem in our country for such important work), there are a lot of teachers who will stay put for a good director and a good situation.  It's good that there is now a new one in place.

I would meet the director, ask about normal turnover rates, ask other questions about curriculum, scheduling, ratios, food policies, etc., and go with your gut.  I think that if you're planning to nurse @PerraSucia's point is a really good one.
  • @blush64 do you have a nut allergy? A lot of people with nut or legume allergies have issues with seeds too

No allergies to nuts that I am aware of but since the 2nd week I haven't used that oil. I have been using progesterone in Ethyl oleate oil. They told me it was really unlikely to cause a reaction.

My PIO is in sesame oil and I have had a hard time with it this round. I have a pretty decent itch constantly. I was going to switch to Ethyl but it was going to cost me 10x the amount so I am just sticking with the itch.

I am am switching to inserts in two weeks because my husband is traveling and I don't think I can inject myself.

I hoept pe the reaction stop for you. I, personally, prefer the PIO to the inserts.

  • @FishyMom thanks, I am hoping there no side effects on Thursday. I didn't even realize there would be a cost difference between the oils, I just take what they give me. I am lucky because I am not paying the costs. (I am a gestational surrogate so the IPs pay) It's really unfortunate how expensive this whole process is.

Injecting myself isn't as bad as I feared. Due to my husband's work schedule he isn't able to help.

Now she'll be all up in my grill to be "closer to the baby so she can help." Her version of 'helping' is waking a sleeping baby so she can hold him/her while I clean and cook for her. I'm now pulling out my hair and DH can't even talk about it he's so annoyed with this. UGH. There aren't enough expletives in the human language!!

I'm not sure how great the deals are on Prime day.  I think I've seen deals on diapers, which is always great.

But I keep running wish lists so I can always keep track if the prices go down and two days ago, things that were discounted have now jumped up in price.  So I think they increase the price prior to Prime day and then put them on "sale".

  • There's a good deal on the 7-in-1 Instapot.  I've been watching it since January and this is by far the cheapest it has been ($70).

My experience with Prime Day and amazon deals in general is that they are usually a good price, but the percentage you're saving is misleading because they calculate based on the suggested retail price and not the normal amazon price.  I can understand why they do it since it a) makes the discount look better and b) the amazon price moves around so much it would be hard to give a good number from it.

For things I'm not as familiar with, I usually look them up on camelcamelcamel.com since it tracks the price over time.  You should note that it doesn't record special prices like lightning deals or deal of the days.  It just looks at the day to day purchase price on amazon.

  • A lot of us have had our first ultrasound by now. Do any of you have your anatomy scan scheduled yet? Curious to know if we all have similar dates!

Mine is set for September 20th. I should be 19 weeks and change by then.
