Re: Breastfeeding Support

  • Anyone elses nipples bleed by day 2 pp?  It's not bad and though he's not latching correctly every time. I make sure he has good latch before I let him just keep going.  Just today he nursed over 20 min and I didn't realize until after he was done that he drew blood.  This happened both sides just at different times today.  LC brought in gel pads for me to use in between.  Is this just part of getting used to it?

Have any BFing moms noticed any changes in the frequency of LO's pooping? Our little guy used to dirty several diapers a day. He turned 3 weeks yesterday, and for the past couple of days he's been going only a couple times, one of which is a very large poop. The color and consistency still look normal, and he has plenty of wet diapers. Everything I read says there is a wide range of normal in terms of how often breastfed babies poop, so I'm curious what others' experiences are.
My son just turned 4 weeks yesterday and he is pooping less frequently for the last week or so. He sometimes goes more than 24 hours without a poo and then poos a few changes in a row. I read that after the first month they may only poo once a week. But I'm not sure if that's breastfed or formula fed babies.
I have read and heard from my pediatrician that it is completely normal for the popping to slow down and not too worry unless the poop starts to change consistency to be more like ours.  So once a week isn't worrisome as long as it still looks like it used to.  My four week old is still pooping all the time, but I guess I have noticed a slight slope down
Ditto. I noticed today that there is less poopy diapers then the previous 3 weeks, but still a few a day.  Before he was going after every feeding.

The LC at the hospital for me said no, but I won't lie the same thing happened to me around 4 days pp. In good news for you, DS and I are doing much better now. Gel pads, lanolin cream, ice before latching if you're sore from the cracks, and absolutely enforcing a good latch will get you through until hopefully your LO learns a little more about eating. DS is now 3 weeks old and while one side always seems to pinch for the first 3 seconds or so after he latches, time and getting through the learning curve for us both (as well as possibly a little toughening up/getting used to it from my nipples) has made it a much easier experience

  • She spent 7 hours eating from me today. I'm impressed. And hoping this is a growth spurt that is almost over because I need sleep!!
  • Mine changes poop habits almost daily but I was more concerned with the fact that it stopped being seedy. Runnier looking now but from what I can tell from reading/LC that runny is normal. She is just over 3 weeks old.
Yes, ours is a bit runnier now too. At first I was nervous it was diarrhea, but from everything I've read it seems to be normal.

Ours is runnier too but I notice that when he farts/poops while I change him it super foamy.  Still yellow and has some seedy bits but not looks like hair mousse.
  • Ok weird. This morning DS didn't want to really eat.  He ate for only 5 min and was nearly putting effort on, kept spitting out the boob.  It had been three hours since his last feed and I was feeling really full and sore so since he didn't want to eat more I decided to pump to relieve the pressure and of he got hungry I'd just put it in a bottle.  But I've been pumping for a while and even on the side that he didn't touch I only got an once so far.  It's been like 15 min. Then suddenly it started pouring like crazy and I'm getting a lot more milk.  I normally have the fast letdown in the beginning of feedings but a heavy letdown on the middle of one? Anyone have this?

I have multiple letdowns per nursing session, yes.  This is normal.  They vary in intensity.

That or they have issues latching cause it's hard as a rock.
  • Holy shitballs.... I think my little guy has lip tie!  I knew his upper lip was longer than normal cause the dr said so but she said it would only be a cosmetic issue when teeth cone in, now I'm reading it can affect the seal and auction of the latch while breastfeeding! Why didn't she mention that?  This explains all the issues I was having.  The clicking, upper lip not staying flanged, the fact that he will make his latch shallow even if a get him on right, poor sucrion. All these things can also cause gas which has been an issue for us! Hopefully they can clip it at our appt on Wednesday.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend. Just meant that I have finally left my little bubble of my own home. I in no way think that any mom isn't a real mom even if they never breastfeed at all.

Congrats on overcoming this first hurdle. I'm sure no one thinks you're trying to offend them. I totally understand. I haven't done it in public yet and I'm worried too. My best friend just had her first a month before mine and her first time nursing in public was horrible. Some creepy old man stared at her the whole time. I tested out my nursing scarf this morning so hopefully if I have to use it soon enough  I'll feel prepared.

Glad you got me! This was definitely a hurdle I was worried about and I feel proud to have gotten through it! My sister got me a great cover from Bebe Au Lait that is formed out in front so I can see her face but am totally covered... Definitely recommend! They have at Target for sure and probably BBB and BRU too.

  • Getting comfy nursing in public is such a game changer.  This is my third, so I'm very relaxed, but it's my DH's first, so a couple times he's taken aback.  We were out to dinner tonight, and he started to hold up a menu to shield me, and my parents & I laughed - it was seriously drawing much more attention than just letting me pop her on the boob.  For me, the key is waiting for a fairly discreet moment (not when the waiter is standing over me reading the specials) to get latched on, then arrange myself & baby.  Et, viola!  There's seriously nothing showing.  The majority of people never realize what I'm up to.  This is my third, and I've never been hassled nursing anywhere -church, airplanes, waiting rooms, restaurants, etc., and it's such a great way to soothe a crying/fussy baby, instead of having to leave, get up & walk the baby around, etc.

The great thing is that the nursing tops are much, much improved since my last go-round nine years ago.

  • My LO has been gassy/fussy this afternoon.  My best guess is that bc if his poor latch due to tongue tie and having to use a shield, coupled with the occasional syringe feed supplement (pumped) is causing air to get in.  We have a lactation appt tomorrow to check weight and I will be addressing a few things.  Namely if switching to a bottle might help.  I'd much rather EP than continue on like the last day or so has been!

  • Ok so.... DS has started a weird pattern of spacing a couple feeds like an hour apart, then will take a long nap. Currently it's been 3 hours since his last feed. At night I let him sleep as long as he wants, but during the day are you waking them if its been over 3 hours? I don't want to kill my supply, and I'm afraid if he sleeps too long he'll get day and night mixed up again. He only wakes up 2x a night to eat so I don't want him to be eating too little. He's 5 weeks & gaining over an ounce a day, so I feel like he definitely wouldn't be sleeping if he was hungry?

I wake my LO every 2-2.5 hours during the day to eat because she does one stretch that is 6-7 hours at night, but she is only 2 weeks. The recommendation is that they eat 8-12 times in 24 hours so as long as they are getting that I think you're fine.

  • I also wake LO to eat usually every 2 hrs during the day if she's really tiered she will hair eat and stay asleep pretty much so it doesn't mess her sleep up at all but maybe I'm just lucky. DS was such a skinny baby I'm trying to get baby girl some fat rolls haha.

  • So we went to a family wedding last night where I had to nurse LO like 4 times because it was that time of the evening where she was cluster feeding. I nursed in public with one of those scarf looking nursing covers and had a couple people try to move it back to see the baby. They were totally oblivious to the fact that I was nursing and then super embarrassed lol. I don't really feel like I have this NIP thing down yet I was trying to position her and then help her re-latch a couple times and if anyone was looking hard enough they may have gotten flashed my husband looked so nervous. But I'm not about to go hide out in the bathroom the whole time yuck!

Good for you! I have a wedding on the 29th and am worried about having to nurse her a lot too. But as you said, I'm gonna have to get over it because I am not sitting on a public toilet for 20 minutes multiple times!!

  • So I met with my LC.  DS definitely has lip/tongue tie so we're gonna get that fixed.  We did a weighted feed too and every break we take she weighs him.  After 5 min we did a burp and a weight, turns out he drank 3oz in that short time and was content.  She said that was pretty fast. Lol. She is hopeful that fixing the ties is gonna really help his gas and latch issues! Yay

I'm having a really hard time getting my LO to latch correctly. Her tongue and upper lip both needed to be clipped but feeding still hurts me afterwards. I have to use a nipple shield now and I'm worried it will reduce my supply. I've gone to an LC twice. First time she alerted me to the tongue tie issues. Now she says to keep using the shield and focus on getting LO to flange her upper and lower lip like a fish, like adiaz said. But I can't get her to do that without taking her off my nipple. She is 3 weeks old now. I'm worried that I'll never get her to latch properly and will always have to use the shield, and I'll run out of supply :-(

Did your PC recommend a dr to clip the ties?  I got my recommendation yesterday and he got me an appt for tomorrow afternoon.  He said sometimes the fix is instant so he likes to get the infants in asap so the BF relationship doesn't struggle too long.  After all, a week for babies is alot since they grow and develop so fast .

Yes, I got the procedure done (tongue and upper lip) when she was 9 days old. She is still hurting me when she latches on, even with the shield (it does ease once she's on). The LC said I need to work on getting her to flange like a fish before I can nurse without the shield,  otherwise she'll hurt me again.

    What do you mean?
  • @lizbeth86 when we were working on latch, the LC suggested getting the baby latched and then having H pull his chin down a little bit to help get that lower lip out. It really helped to have a third hand when we were getting the hang of it.
  • Has anyone used the Milkies Milk Saver to collect whatever milk you leak while nursing or pumping? What do you think of it? I'm tempted to get it for MOTN feedings, which is when I leak the most, but it seems like it could be a lot of extra hassle. I don't know how much milk I'm actually leaking, and I don't know if it's worth it to go to the extra effort of storing the milk and taking it to the fridge in the middle of the night.
  • @Lizbeth86 I've been using a nipple shield since about day 5 and we are now over a month and my supply has not appeared to have been affected. I was pumping after every feeding for a few weeks to get supply up but now only pump 1-2 times a day to help with any heavy feeling and to build my freezer supply. She did a weighed feed not too long ago and ate 3oz from me and I can still routinely pump 2-4oz (depending) from each boob. I'm not as worries about supply any more and we are starting to practice eating without the shield-when she is calm and not starving I will try her breast first and let her get a feel and practice latching. Then I will put the shield on and nurse her if she hasn't been able to maintain the latch. The other day, for the first time, she nursed for a little while shield free from the side that is the bigger problem for me.

Hope your feedings get easier. Relax as much as you can. Stress will affect your supply just as much as anything else will. And drinks lots of water!
  • I'm also on a shield and working my son off of it the same way as June is. He feed without it twice today! Just  do what you need to!

They should have recommended you take your LO to a chiropractor to get a craniosacral treatment.  It helps relax muscles to rule of structural issues that can effect breastfeeding and fix things caused by the ties.  Tongue and lip tie can cause to jaw to pull back which will cause issues with the latch as well as the ties themselves.  The Dr I made an appointment with is a dentist who specializes in revisions of lip/tongue ties in order to improve nursing and he and my lactation consultant both told me that getting body work has great effects.

  • I'm also on a shield and working my son off of it the same way as June is. He feed without it twice today! Just  do what you need to!
When she feeds without the shield I get stupid excited. Similar to how I felt when she first started feeding WITH the shield.
  • Thanks everyone for your help! June and Amawanderlust, are you using shield bc your LO can't latch at all, or because LO bites you?
  • My LC is saying my LO just needs more time?

Mine latching at all and it hurt SO BAD! She would basically chew trying to latch and get milk. The LC said I have "an abundance of breast tissue" along with slightly inverted nipples and she has a tiny mouth. So the hope is that the longer I feed the more my nipples will toughen up and stick out and it will also give her a chance to grow more and with a bigger mouth and better mechanics will latch better eventually. Or I use the nipple shield the entire time we breastfeed. The LC said whatever works for us to go for it.

Even with the shield I have to make sure her latch is good or it hurts. The same with pumping, I have to  sure my nipples are in the flange just right or they pull funny and rub and hurt. And when she is done eating my nipple is white, which i read some information about. So the nipple shield helps her latch but still doesn't completely solve our latching issues.
