Anyone else frustrated with weight loss? I'm EBF And tracking calories I was eating 1500 before pregnancy to maintain my weight. I've read everywhere add 500 to that so I was at 2,000. I dropped it to 1900 the last couple weeks my supply is still fine but I can't go lower I'm too hungry. I seriously still weight the same as the day I came home from the hospital. So frustrating I do realize the benefits outweigh and I'll do whatever it takes to provide milk for my baby so I guess this is more of just a rant. Anyone with me the pounds aren't melting off at all here and I'm 6 weeks pp Thursday.

Along with tracking calories are you watching quality of food? And spacing out your meals for multiple meals and multiple snacks?
I find that I tend to still eat similarly to how I was eating with gestational diabetes. I actually had to start being mindful to eat breakfast. I would be starving middle the night/first thing in the morning but wouldn't eat (busy, feeding her, trying to sleep) and want eating til noon or later. I still do well with watching portions, consuming fewer carbs and increasing healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
Pace yourself. The weight will come off just make sure you don't cut calories too much. Even if your supply stays good, your body will try to hold on to the calories you are giving it as a reserve if it thinks you are trying to starve it.
Also like June, I've been using a nipple shield and my baby is almost 6 weeks. I was also mostly pumping when he was first born because he was preterm and small and would be sleepy. Now I'm pumping a few times a day but trying to breastfeed when I can. It's more because my nipples are flat and it's hard for him to stay latched.
I don't have any personal experience with the nipple sheild but I know my best friend had to use one until about 2 months then her LO did fine without it!
I'm eating really healthy during the week the weekends I splurge a little maybe cutting that back would help.
My thoughts? YOU MADE A BABY! Splurge on the weekends. Between recovery from birth and also sleep deprivation with a newborn, it's easy for our bodies to hold on to extra weight. This is a stressful time. Don't make it more stressful by depriving yourself (I just bought my third cookie cake since giving birth a month ago. I missed them sooooo much while pregnant and with GD!).

QBF- I have been eating so much more while BFing then I did while pregnant. My hunger and cravings are so much worse!! I have been eating chocolate chip cookies non stop basically.
Oops! I've totally let myself off the hook since I'm sustaining two human lives, although I need to get my act together

Omg that sounds soooo good!! Thanks I needed to hear that just hard because the weigh fell off with DS but I'm in my 30's now so I guess me metabolism has slowed down a bit!!

QBF
Let's get real here! Cookie cakes are by far the best thing on this planet as far as I'm concerned...
Oops I've been cheating all day every day lol. I had GD so I've been indulging. I lost a lot of weight during pregnancy, so I'm actually down 40 lbs from my pre pregnancy weight, but I go to my 6 week appointment tomorrow and I really hope I haven't gained any since my 2 week appointment!
Do you ladies wake up your LO to feed them? I feel like I'm getting mixed messages. Pediatrician and LC both say I don't need to wake a sleeping baby, but LC also doesn't recommend going more than 4-5 hours without feeding or pumping (for my breast & milk's sake). Also do I need to get in 8 feedings per day, or not? My LO would sleep at least two stretches of over 5 hours each at night. I'd be thrilled about this if I really could just let her do it and sleep myself as well...

I don't get an option, my person won't go more than a couple of hours between feedings. Most we have gone was 3.5 hours. It is definitely hard to know what best to do. If your little one is sleeping routinely 5 hours at a time then if your supply is well established i wouldnt think you would need to wake them up or pump. If you do then you are telling your body that is an in demand time and to make milk. But you don't actually need the milk then.
It has been drilled in to me that you should feed or pump at least 8 times a day. Again, so much depends on how old your baby is, how their weight gain is going, and how established your supply is.

I wake LO every 2 hours during the day to make up for her long stretch at night and to ensure we get at least 8 feedings per day.
I'm about to throw in the towel. If FF babies sleep in longer stretches that's looking mighty fine right now. She is nursing every hour and a half and that's from the start of one feeding to the start of the next. So I'm barely getting to sleep before she is throwing a fit again. My right breast burns for some reason (from the nipple back) and my back is killing me from being constantly hunched over trying to keep a good latch. And she keeps digging her tiny nails in to my flesh, despite the fact that we constantly trim them.
My LO also still doesn't go past one 4 hr stretch but if she did you betcha we would both sleep! Like pp I feed LO every 2 hrs during the day were usually at 12-13 feeding every 24 hrs girl likes to eat.

Hopefully it's just a growth spurt but I feel your pain LO was doing that a couple weeks ago. I actually bought formula so my husband could help at night and she wouldn't drink it!! She will happily drink a BM bottle but that requires me to be up pumping ughh.

You can do it! Sounds like a growth spurt . Make sure she is actually done before you take her off. Burp her and keep offering the breast until she is just not interested. For the latch, one thing my LC said is if at the end of a feed LO is still latches and only doing occasional sicks for comfort, let them , it's lime practice for them. Have you tried feeding while laying on your side. I never did till I was just too tired to hold him and my back hurts too. It was amazing, cause he loved it and we both fell asleep. Mind you we bed share sometimes so it's easier for me. If that's not poolssible try and lean back once latched on. Gravity can help make sure the latch stays where it should.

it wasn't even that she was hungry. Just angry. Didn't want to be held didn't want to be put down and screamed at me. She is always allowed to feed until she is done and even then I offer her more. She is spending, on average, 4 1/2 or more hours on my breast a day. And she won't usually take bottles, even expressed milk. She wasn't gassy or wet or anything. Just being an angry little person and I am at wit's end. Even this morning she is kicking and punching me as she breast feeds. Not amused by her right now. And I thought maybe it was cluster feeding from a growth spurt but this is just how she normally feeds. When it is a growth spurt she is literally on me nonstop (7 hours one day of breast feeding).
ETA: I can't do laid back nursing. We have enough problems with latching to need the nipple shield so I have to work to keep her latched to make sure she is able to stay on there long enough.
Reflux? Mine was angry all the time and wouldn't get off me (extra awesome with my yeast infection). Kicking and head butting were par for the course. Started her on Zantac, and while she still spits up a lot, she isn't nursing to calm her stomach as much, and reduced bubbling acid has slowed down the kicking and the tearing away at my nipple. She is also sleeping better during the day, though still rather short sessions at night (maybe 2.5 hrs).
With the burning, check for yeast. Mine felt like burning/itching/shards of glass when milk flowed. She is 1 month, if that helps, and didn't get bad reflux until around 3.5 weeks.
I was wondering about thrush perhaps for the burning pain. I actually think I've been turning my pump up too high because it hurt last night awful after pumping but has slowly been going away. So now that I'm about 12 hours away from the last pump, it hardly hurts.
As for reflux, I'm not sure? She spits up occasionally but not often. And during the day she isn't as bad. I'm not sure if days are easier for her because I am more patient/less frustrated or if she still has days and nights confused. She just took a good nap (2.5 hours) and latched right on to feed. Maybe I'm the pissy one and it rubs off on her?
My husband has the day off tomorrow so I can go to the dentist and he is going to take her and give a bottle (he will have her in the evenings when I go back to work in another week so she will need to learn to take bottles). I'm hoping to just get a chunk of sleep in and feel recharged! I know it is just about getting through this stage but man, in the midst of it, it is HARD! She will be 5 weeks tomorrow. They say it gets better around 3 months....here's hoping!!

My little guys does something like this, just not as often. He arch's his back, pushes me, cries ect. My LC said it's mostly gas/reflux related because we are still working on his latch too, no nipple sheild though.

So I do half pumping and half breastfeeding. I was pumping more when he was first born, because he was so sleepy, so it might be different for someone always just breastfeeding. I have never fed more than 8 times a day. I get 6-8 in a day and it's usually 6 or 7. I think once your milk is established and the baby is back to his or her birth weight, it's ok to go longer stretches. I usually just pump if my LO is still sleeping ( like right now). It's really whatever works for you and your baby. I'm pumping enough milk for him so he gets a bottle a few times a day and therefore I know he's getting enough. My son is 6 weeks old fwiw.
i don't know how you ladies do it that feed 12 times a day. My son breastfeeds for long stretches at a time usually so I would just be constantly bf if I were doing every 2 hours.
I I try to pump or Bf before I go to bed (12-1am), but I've found that pumping works better because than he is fuller that way. My H can then give him a bottle. Then he usually wakes up around 4-6 am for another feeding. After that he goes to sleep again until 8-10. Feed again. Then another feed around 12--2. Then 4-6. Then around 9. These times may vary a little bit and sometimes there is more, but it's been working pretty well.
Yeah that's a long nursing session I would never nurse the 12-14 times we do! My LO nurses like 12 min one boob and she's done my son did the same thing.
I think my son had finally gotten into a feeding pattern. He feeds about every two hours during the day and for or five hours at night. Then of course he's going through his six week growth spurt so who knows what tonight will be like. Last night I broke down and gave him two bottles because I was so exhausted.

I am only breastfeeding so far. I try to make sure we get to 8 feedings per 24-hour period, but my little guy rarely eats more than 8 times per day, and sometimes it's more like 7 or 7 1/2. He'll be 5 weeks on Saturday. I agree it's hard to find the balance between following baby's lead and also making sure he's eating often enough. I'm trying to stay close to 8 feedings per day at least for the first six weeks, to make sure my supply is well established.
LO must be going through her first growth spurt (3 weeks today) because she is fussy and cluster feeding like crazy. I must admit it's making me nervous that she's not getting enough even though she is peeing and pooping fine.
Totally normal fear. I'm usually pretty afraid she isn't getting enough, even though I know she is fine. Cluster feedings are hard. And I am finding that my kiddo just doesn't like evenings. Cries generally from 5pm-10pm for no reason, eats a lot and often, and has to be soothed a ton. Hoping this is just a stage she will grow out of.
Thanks everyone. When my little one feeds every 2 hours during the day, I'm not always sure that she's getting enough each time. And June2016BabyW, my little one is fussiest at that time too, so I always wonder if she needs to eat more. But then she seems to sleep fine once she goes down around 10 so she's probably ok.

From what I've read, babies have a witching hour on average from 6-10pm. My LO had it from 4-9 for a while then it just stopped at about 3-4weeks old. He may start again during his next growth spurt but for now he's good. Well, maybe not right now cause he had the ties clipped but before that, yes. Lol
My LO is turning 6 weeks this Sunday and I have noticed that his time on the breast had gone down from an average of 30 minutes to more like 15 minutes unless he is just comfort sucking at the end, which isn't that often. This last week I have been bottle feeding him more to get ready for me going back to work Monday, so I wonder if that is why? He latches fine and actually still looks for the boob after a bottle feeding (4oz.). Just wondering if he has really boosted his efficiency or its starting to like the bottle better... I wouldn't blame him, i have a crazy let down.

Could he be getting more from the bottle, so he doesn't need as much from the breast? I really don't know, my LO is still lingering and comfort sucking on my breast. I'm trying to figure it out myself.

My little guy start doing shorter feeds at about 4 weeks. We did a weighted feed and he drink 3+oz in 5 min and was done. No wonder he gets gassy.
Breastfeeding is totally messing with my head. DS is gaining weight and peeing and pooping up a storm, but it seems he has a lot of inefficient feeding. He will feed for what feels like a long time, pull himself off of the boob, and then fall asleep. Then 20-30 minutes later he wakes cranky wanting to eat. I guess there's a lot of comfort nursing going on but I feel like I get no break

This has been us since 9:00 pm. Feed for a bit, pull off and refuse any more. Nap for 5-10 minutes then cry like she's never eaten before. I get really bad restless leg when I am tired and by this time at night my legs ache so bad and can't stop moving/get comfortable but she won't stop nursing!!
@adiaz132003 I'm actually relieved to hear someone else's baby is doing this too. Mine went from 10-12min to 5-7min recently and of course I've been wondering if he is getting enough. He still poops and pees the usual amount, that hasn't changed. He also isn't looking to feed again right away and still goes 2-3hrs between feedings. I wouldn't mind doing a weighed feed. Is there a special scale for that?
Ugh, I've been trying to get my baby off the nipple shield and he now will latch without it but is taken a huge toll on my nipples! I went back to the shield and he seemed to nurse more efficiently...I guess that means I should probably keep with the shield and make a point to go to a lc to see how to fix his latch.

I had it done with a lactation consultant and I think the scale was the kind they use in Pediatrician offices.
Because I had a rough start to breastfeeding and needed to pump to protect supply, I'm having trouble NOT pumping now. I need to pump a little when I go back to work in another week but even then I won't be apart from her long so I may only have to pump once (plan on working in the evenings from 1-4 hours 4x a week). So right now I'm really just building the freezer supply and a small fridge supply in case my husband needs to feed her. But I feel guilty if I go more than a day without pumping, even though my back up supply is pretty good right now (just transferred another 24oz over to the freezer). I think in my head I worry that if I'm not pumping then I am hurting my supply. I still feed on demand and plan on still doing that when I m back at work. Just wish I could convince myself that my supply is fine and will stay fine just from breastfeeding alone. The nipple shield doesn't seem to affect my supply so I think I just need to relax and go with it.
People who are EBF and are not planning on going to work-do any of you not pump at all? I don't think my SIL ever has, even just to build a small back up supply so someone else could do a bottle here and there.
