So I know the 'rules' have changed since I have had my daughter, what was everyone told about drinking alcohol and breastfeeding? We hardly touched on the subject in my breastfeeding class and I'm curious what everyone was told.
I second the other advice. FYI, "pumping & dumping" will not "clear" the alcohol out of your milk. Despite how engorged breasts feel, they're not static jugs that hold milk that stays unchanged until baby nurses. Your milk's alcohol content is the same as your blood alcohol level at any given moment - so if you're legally drunk, your milk will contain 0.08% alcohol. Obviously, I'm not suggesting getting drunk with a baby (even if you're not BFing), but everyone should be reassured that it's not like you're giving your baby a glass of 10% alcohol content wine.
So the only reason to ever pump & dump is if you've overdone it, or for some other reason cannot nurse and you're engorged - then pump for comfort. The alcohol will clear your milk at the same rate as it clears your system.
I use an app to keep track of things (wet/poopy diapers; nursing; pumping; etc) and it shows that, on average, she has spent over 5 hours breast feeding daily. She is close to 6 hours today. 6 hours of having someone latched to me. Please tell me she will start spreading out feedings. And some times she is on one breast for 15 minutes and other times she wants both and will spend 45 minutes on one and 10 on the other. I let her stay latched as long as she wants (still getting her to put weight on) so she isn't sucking the entire time but when I try to pull back she starts vigorously sucking again. And I can hear and feel her swallowing so I know it isn't all just about comfort. She hates her pacifiers and doesn't like the bottle.
Not complaining (much) but hoping there will be a time when she needs less time breast feeding. Born on the 10th so about 2 1/2 weeks old.
Anyone having issues with latching? . This is my third and my hardest to feed. She is destroying my nipples. I believe it may be a lip tie and I have an appointment July 20. Had to get a nipple shield but afraid it will affect my supply. She is also super gassy!

Is it a shallow latch that she's doing? A tip I read which helped me was when you grab your breast to feed them, put your thumb on the tip area where you want her nose to touch and your index finger where you want her chin and pinch so that it is closer to the shape of her mouth. Wait for her to open wide like a yawn then place her quick on the breast. You should feel her nose and chin on your fingers and don't let go until she starts to suckle for a minute then let go. Her lips should be flanged like fish lips.

Yes! It does get better. In the meantime, unless there's a true concern about weight gain or nursing, stop keeping track. Just let these days float by in a sea of nursing & diapers. They'll end soon. Better not to know.

Can you get in person help? It was really a lifesaver for me, and battered nipples on top of everything else (including other kids to care for) will push you over the edge. I would really, strongly recommend an LC or La Leche League leaders. If not possible, Jack Newman's book is excellent.

I was tracking my feedings religiously at first until my LC emphasized exactly what you've said. I was driving myself crazy watching the clock up until then.

I'm tracking my feedings because the lactation consultant and the pediatrician asked me to. Had problems with latch and now using a nipple shield. Have to go for weekly weigh ins to make sure she is gaining. Going for a weighed feed today and hoping that she is making positive progress and that the weighed feed shows she is getting plenty.
I was previously also pumping after every feed for the nipple simulation and to keep supply up (LC advice because of the nipple shield) and was so thankful when that got cut back to just twice a day. Between feeding and pumping that felt like all I was doing!!
So I started pumping to see how much milk I can make and turns out I don't have oversupply, just fast letdown. So I think during the day when I know he's bout to zonk out for three hours I'll pump right after he eats to make sure I drain both sides. I might have been screwing myself over by block feeding thinking I was making too much. I only get about 2 oz from a full breast and he seems to want more than that. And pumping is easier than I thought it would be in terns of set up so I think DH will get his wish of being able to do at least one feeding per day or every other day.

If you have access to an LC or even just a good scale, you could do a weighed feed. That's where you weigh baby, feed, weigh again. I just went today and between both breasts she took in 80ml. I rarely pump that much. Baby is much better at getting milk out than even the best quality pump. I also liked seeing how much she ate so we have a better idea of how much she will need from the bottle when i go to work. I think we would have either overestimated or underestimated.

Oh that's a good idea. That way you don't put to much in the bottle and waste any milk.
Did anyone get fever/chills and lumpy boobs when their milk came in? I experienced this last night before realizing I was engorged and leaking. I was on antibiotics for 2 days in the hospital so I'm worried it left me wide open for other infections (went in with gbs, delivered with some other infection and needed different antibiotics). I'm 5 days pp now.

Fever and chills no but lumpy? Oh yeah. It felt so odd when they were engorged. I felt the Lumos more near the top where there is less fat and if I pressed on them I would leak.
Anyone have suggestions to avoid too much gas when giving a breastfeed baby a bottle? DH is going to give DD a pumped bottle once a night so we can take shifts and get more sleep. Last night was the first night and she fussed over the bottle for awhile. Then, a couple hours later she kept grunting, presumably from gas from the bottle. She's sleeping in our room in her pack n play, so it messed with our sleep as she grunted away on and off for hours.
Anyone else giving a bottle or 2 a day have ideas on how to avoid this gassy grunt fest? DH burped her well afterwards, but she still had gas. We're using slow flow natural avent nipples and bottles.

We use the same bottles like once a day as well. Making sure no air gets to the nipple is the most important part. DS gets fussy a lot anyway so we haven't noticed a difference. But dh is also way better at burping than me.

fever/chills sounds like an infection -talk to your doc.
Anyone else notice they are super engorged/full in the night/early morning and then soft and empty feeling in the evening? I even experimented with pumping and in the morning I got about 2.5 oz per side and the evening I got less than an once per side.

Yes very normal but the milk is fattier more filling in the evening so they need less. Our bodies are awesome!!

I'm just getting over mastitis. It started like that. Fever, chills, lump and pain in my breast. I too was GBS+ and had antibiotics during labor and delivery. Mastitis kicked in about 15 days pp. My ob prescribed me an antibiotic course and is helped a ton. I'm much better now, but it was misery. Ob recommended warm compress before nursing, really massaging the lumps while nursing to work it the plugged duct and infection, and cold compress after nursing. And feed feed feed, you've gotta keep that milk moving. Good luck!
End of day 3 and as of this morning little one has lost 15% of his birth weight and was slightly dehydrated (only one wet diaper, pooping okay, in 12 hours, dry mouth). The pedi has me supplementing with .5 oz formula and/or expressed milk at each feeding (I'm choosing to use a syringe while he's latched) with a weight check tomorrow to assess next steps, if needed. Fenugreek on the way via Prime, mother's milk tea in my cup, and 15 minutes hospital-grade double pumping after every feeding, praying my milk comes in soon. Anyone have trouble establishing supply? Any other tips? Everyone is telling me his latch is great (hospital nurses, pedi, in-hospital LC) but I'm thinking I might want to get that quadruple-checked too? Feeling bummed that I'm not making what I "should" be...

Stuck in box:
Sounds like you are doing every thing right. I know it is stressful but you are following up with the professionals and doing the absolute best you can. I know the pumping after every feeding can be exhausting but it can really help to establish supply. And I as shocked when it seemed like all of a sudden my milk came in. She was delivered on a Friday night just before midnight and midafternoon that following Tuesday afternoon my milk was all of a sudden there. We did have latch issues that were really apparent.
Stay positive, stay as relaxed as possible, and keep feeding your LO as often as possible! Let us know how it goes the next couple of days!

Hang in there! We had a similar issue. LO had a great latch and was a good eater, but my milk didn't come in until day 4 or 5. We followed a similar protocol to you, pumping and supplementing as necessary for a day or two. We got through it and now have a great breastfeeding relationship without any supplementing. Try to be patient, and don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to get things going.

Didn't have fever and chills (I was also GBS+). But holy engorgment!!! At first I was pumping on top of BFing for relief but then realized I was making it worse since it's a supply and demand issue. I'm still dealing with some engorgment- I'm actually waking her up in the night to eat since I wake up in pain.
Question: DS is a month now and still falls asleep frequently during feeds. I spend almost the entire day nursing, he cries like he is starving, eats for 2 or 3 minutes, then falls asleep. I thought we would be past that sleepy newborn stage by now?

My friends baby was like this but she was also over 3 weeks early so she was sleepy longer. What helped was doing a burp and diaper change after she fell asleep cause it would wake her up and then they'd start again.
We had to start supplementing formula when DS was three days because his bilirubin levels were so high he was approaching the threshold for phototherapy and my milk still hadn't fully come in. So we started with 20-30 ml and now are doing around 40 ml per feeding through a tube at my breast. I make sure he empties both breasts before he gets the formula and sometimes he unlatches and spits out the tube before he finishes all 40 ml.
So now I'm wondering if I should try to scale back the amount of formula he's getting. His jaundice is gone and he's gaining weight. I'm going to ask my midwife on Tuesday, but I'm feeling some trepidation about reducing the formula supplements. I'm even wondering if we should increase the amount he's getting now that he's bigger. I guess I just don't trust myself to make enough milk for him to be completely bf.

Maybe try for a day and count wet diapers. As long as there are enough diapers and the color is pale yellow then you should be fine. Babies using formula tend to gain weight faster anyway because of the extra stuff they add to it so I wouldn't say you need to increase at all. The only time I would think you'd need to add more is of there is no weight gain. Ask your midwife what she thinks about maybe doing a trail run for a couple days and see if he is losing/gaining.
We've started trying try have DH give her a pumped bottle once a night. Problem is she gets fussy afterwards and won't sleep. We thought it was gas from the bottle, but we got a Dr Brown's bottle and tried that tonight. No gas, but she is wide awake and fussing over an hour and a half later. She's not hungry since she took 4.5oz! Any suggestions? We really want DH to be able to give a bottle so we can split up feedings since she eats every 2 hours still and it's really hard on me. She normally falls right asleep after breastfeeding. This is maddening!

Maybe try a couple minutes of skin to skin with dad afterwards?

Have any BFing moms noticed any changes in the frequency of LO's pooping? Our little guy used to dirty several diapers a day. He turned 3 weeks yesterday, and for the past couple of days he's been going only a couple times, one of which is a very large poop. The color and consistency still look normal, and he has plenty of wet diapers. Everything I read says there is a wide range of normal in terms of how often breastfed babies poop, so I'm curious what others' experiences are.
Hi it's day 6 since my daughter has been born & the pediatrician is having me breastfeed her 1st but if she looks hungry give her a ounce of two of formula, she lost a lot of weight and I'm not producing enough milk.. I'm exhausted but I want to breastfeed my baby girl anyone else going threw the same situation? I have breast pumped after feeding & nothing comes out hopeless mom trying not to give up

My DD still goes A LOT, but, I read that frequency of poop can slow down at about the month mark where they might only go everyday or 2. Doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about.

My son just turned 4 weeks yesterday and he is pooping less frequently for the last week or so. He sometimes goes more than 24 hours without a poo and then poos a few changes in a row. I read that after the first month they may only poo once a week. But I'm not sure if that's breastfed or formula fed babies.

I have read and heard from my pediatrician that it is completely normal for the popping to slow down and not too worry unless the poop starts to change consistency to be more like ours. So once a week isn't worrisome as long as it still looks like it used to. My four week old is still pooping all the time, but I guess I have noticed a slight slope down
Mine changes poop habits almost daily but I was more concerned with the fact that it stopped being seedy. Runnier looking now but from what I can tell from reading/LC that runny is normal. She is just over 3 weeks old.

Re: Breastfeeding Support
So the only reason to ever pump & dump is if you've overdone it, or for some other reason cannot nurse and you're engorged - then pump for comfort. The alcohol will clear your milk at the same rate as it clears your system.

Cheers!
Not complaining (much) but hoping there will be a time when she needs less time breast feeding. Born on the 10th so about 2 1/2 weeks old.
