The other day I wiped my son's butt while nursing, that's totally just as glamorous but like @kbrands7 said, it really does get easier to multitask as they get older and sturdier.
Anyway, I have a question- in the never ending saga of my week from hell, the baby has now caught whatever the weird virus was that triggered my son's respiratory distress the other day. She has ulcers all over her palate and absolutely refuses to nurse or suck on any sort of artificial nipple. The doctor said just keep trying and if she has less than 3 wet diapers in 24 hours bring her back in for dehydration. I'm pumping because my boobs are not happy about this situation, and I was thinking about trying syringe feeding her? Did anyone have to do that/ if so, any tips? Or does anyone have other suggestions for ways to get milk into her that don't involve sucking?
@Bellodomani FX for a quick recovery! I hope your son is feeling better. We spoonfed/cup fed DS1 for a few days when he was an infant. I'd recommend the cup with a toddler in the house. A small, clear cup works best to allow small sips at a time. If you have a fast letdown, you could also hand express into her mouth; I've done this with DS1 when he was way too stuffy to drink before other decongestant measures kicked in. You've had one hell of a week I really hope it gets better, fast!
Any idea how long after you eat that something could affect your breastmilk? LO is 6 weeks old and being so fussy about going down for naps and bed the past night/day. Wondering if it's just a phase (Wonder Weeks says she's supposed to be happy!) or if I ate something that might've upset her. She's great when I'm on the go lately, but putting her down for sleep is struggle bus central!
I'm nursing and looked down to see Holly looking up at me so I said "Hi" and she smiled so huge it broke my heart into million pieces. Worth the struggle.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say either she is in the throes of the 6 week sleep regression (in which case it'll pass) or she's gone thru that developmental leap and come out on the other side more alert and awake, so needs more effort/ baby trickery to be put to sleep. 6 weeks is when my son started to need either motion (car seat, stroller, swing, carrier) or the full swaddle + dark room + white noise in order to fall asleep. Either way, I'd say it is pretty unlikely that the problem is related to something in your diet- sounds more like a sleep problem than a tummy problem.
I breastfed the baby, and my husband said, "You should drink the whole bottle." Referring to the bottle of champagne I bought in April. He took the baby upstairs and put her down for a nap. Baby is still sleeping. Bottle is empty. I do what he tells me to do.

Why do I feel like every week is a regression or a leap - it is never ending!!! We had to put her down 3 times last night and nap time was twice today. I just got back from a 30 min car ride to get her to sleep. I hear her stirring in her car seat... Just when they are good, something happens and takes that away haha

So much this.
And I just pumped a boob and tested the milk. The strip was black. Let it be said that I cannot drink a bottle of champagne and have the alcohol out of my system an hour after my last drink. My first official pump and dump.

It is soooo true. But I will say (and it's a hell of a lot easier for me to see this now that I'm on kid #2) the flip side of that is that when you're in a shitty phase, that can also change very quickly. The only constant with infants is how quickly they change, for better or worse.
@kbrands7 Thank you for the tip! The cup feeding worked way better than the syringe because she kept trying to suck on the syringe, it would poke her ulcers, and then she would scream. Got a couple ounces in her twice today via cup and then the pharmacy filled our prescription for magic mouthwash and between that and Tylenol she's nursing a little now. Hopefully this is a turning point!

So true as she slept 7 hours straight last night..!
@That1didntcount ugh I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I used to get them all the time and almost threw in the towel. Have you tried lecithin ? Since I've started using it I haven't had a clogged duct issue (knock on wood).
Also, have baby nurse using the dangle method while you massage the area.
As is breastfeeding isn't hard enough, let's throw in sore/bleeding nipples and infections! Ugh.
I fought the good fight, but my Saturday night involved urgent care and 10 days of shitty antibiotics. Hate this, and am so down in the dumps. I had to go in though tonight bc my daughters 3rd bday party is tomorrow and I need this body to get right.
Is anyone not wearing deodorant because of breastfeeding? There's no way what I rub on is going anywhere toward my nipple where she's sucking, right?
Nope, but I'm definitely avoiding perfume. I may smell like breast milk all the time, but so does LO and hers is the only opinion I care about.
Okay guys let me tell you something cute: i had helped my mom with a big moving project so I was really sweaty and stinky, she'd made me laugh so hard I'd peed my pants (yay for vaginal delivery?) and Ez had puked all over me. I turned to DH and said "okay smell me I stink!" And he did and said "you just...you gotta love your smell man".
I need help! My LO wakes up screaming with gas pain every day between 4:30-5:30AM. gripe water/gas drops don't work and I'm starting to wonder if it's a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance from his MOTN feedings (usually between 2-3:30AM). He typically will only eat for a short time ~5-7 minutes on one breast at that feeding. What can I do to test this theory? Feed him a pumped bottle at the MOTN feed? start on the same breast as the last feed from a few hours before?
I've seen several mamas talk about wearing a nursing tank with a kimono or something similar tossed over. That sounds nice but I'm a 36 F over here. The nursing tanks I have are not giving me the support I need. I have 4 great maternity bras with underwire from motherhood maternity. Unfortunately they only carry my size in black and beige (I refuse to call a color nude). I've been trying to wear them with the seamless camis I wore before becoming pregnant all under a large/ loose shirt. I just don't pull up the straps on my cami so I can easily feed in public. What im really struggling with is night time. I leak at night because I don't want to wear underwire to sleep but the nursing bras I have without wire don't hold me in if I roll over.
Im a 34G in US size. What I use as night is a Melinda G soft cup nursing bra or a leading lady nursing tank. The nursing bra doesn't provide a ton of support but I don't fall out of it at night and my pads stay in place. I also really like the leading lady tanks because the top sits a little higher than the others so I feel more covered and supported.
Is anyone else's LO losing the latch, and then freaking out while bobbing up and down several times before settling for awhile, then doing it again a few minutes later? I can't figure out if it means my supply is low or she just wants to comfort nurse without the actual food part or that she's just really tired or what...

Totally normal- both my kids have done this, often when they're tired or otherwise fussy. I get the feeling with this baby it means she wants the comfort of nursing without the food, so if my milk is actively pouring out I just let it spray onto a rag then let her back on when it stops.
So ANGRY!!!!I was so stressed that my regular supply had tanked. pump 4oz and get on with the day. Then all of a sudden I'm barely able to get 1 let alone 2 oz. But then I realize my breasts still have milk Wth is going on. Looked into it firther, it's my damn pump! The power supply is taking a dump
@lizChesnut Check the white membrane. Once it gets flimsy and doesn't sit flush, you should change it.
@amberraysofdawn How many weeks is your baby? Mine started doing this during her spurt/leap 1 of wonder weeks. She is still doing it at 8 weeks. Before it was because my supply needed catch up to her spurt. Now, I think she's drinking faster and getting a tiny bit distracted.
@missnc77 Em is 6 weeks old. She started doing this during her first wonder week, too. I've started taking her off the breast and burping her for a few moments before putting her back to see if she still wants more. Still not sure why she does it - though I suspect it's because my supply hasn't caught up with her growing appetite - but pulling her off and burping for a few seconds seems to help calm her down and for my breasts to have a few moments to prepare for more feeding if necessary.
Anyone try upspring milkflow before? I just bought some in hopes of boosting my supply and wondering if anyone's had success with it
I tried it in the capsules and chocolate drink mix and it seemed like it helped. I've since run out and my supply has gone down so that's my only measure, but I only felt like it worked if I took it more than the recommended amount. The drink mix is good in coffee if your drinking it right now. Otherwise you can put it in milk and it's just like chocolate milk.
After your last nursing session before LO goes down for the night, do you pump before bed? I nurse around 8pm and then it tends to be 1-2am before he's up for another feeding. Would you pump somewhere in there, or just let it go til the MON wakeup?
I let it go. If you empty your breasts, they will think they need to create more milk. I try and make it to the next feeding, but if I wake up really engorged, I'll manually pump an ounce for relief. LO is so erratic right now with how much she sleeps and when she wants to eat at night that I feel nervous about how pumping may affect my supply at night (as in making me more engorged).

I stopped pumping at night because after two days of just two night time pump sessions I woke up so engorged my good breast was rock hard and leaking. I now power pump every once in awhile, that combined with committing more to starting Ezra on slacker boob has evened me out a lot (slacker leaked last night! I was so surprised it woke me up!"
Baby is eating like crazy lately! Eating until spitting up/barfing it ALL right back up! Idk if he's in a growth spurt or preparing for one but this kid is on a mission lately. It feels almost like he's preparing the boobs for extra milk production because all of a sudden I'm feeling engorged on both sides! Urgh, just when I thought they had regulated.
She'll be 2 months on Wednesday which means I've made it 2 months EBFing. I haven't caved to the formula in my pantry yet. I'm so proud of myself, and even more proud to say that I'm confident I can make it the next month as well. It has gotten easier with her getting bigger. I feel pretty awesome for sticking with it! Hooray for all of us coming up or that already hit the 2 month mark! We're doing it!!!
Whoohoo congrats @missnc77!! One of the best things we can do is remind ourselves how far we have come! It's amazing what our bodies can do, even when it seems like such a pain in the...
Yay to us! One and a half more weeks and I'll hit the two month mark as well! Even though I had a rough start, most of the time I really enjoy bfing, it makes me feel very close to my baby girl, also I feel like I can give her something nobody else can, it's a pretty good feeling. I love it that she grows and gets everything she needs from my body
I hated it at first and almost threw in the towel at week 3 but I'm so glad I stuck with it. It's a MILLION times easier now and we have a great routine now. Are my nipples still sore and get clogged ducts almost daily? You betcha, but compared to those first 3 weeks, it's much more manageable. Thanks for all of your encouragement ladies - it made it easier to keep chugging along. I see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!
Yep! I think a turning point for me was when I drank a bottle of champagne, and my husband gave her 3 bottles in a row until my milk came back okay. I felt like I was letting her down, and by the time I could finally feed her, I was so excited to do it even if it was 2am. I missed her. I feel great about where I am mentally to make it through to 3 months, then the game will change with pumping while she's at daycare. But that's a bridge we'll cross together once we get there.
I have been lurking but not commenting much but I'm hoping to be able to participate more. You ladies are doing a great job sticking with it! LO and I have had a hard time with BFing but I feel like we are doing pretty well now. We had to use a nipple shield on and off but once I got over the fact that things were just going to have to be that way for a while I have been enjoying BFing. I didn't imagine it being this difficult but we'll reach 2 months on Thursday and I feel good about that. She will go to daycare in August so we may have to adjust some things then but right now we're hanging in there!
