Sleep problems and those wary of CIO

This is in no way to stand on a soap box about CIO, because prior to last week I was against it for our LO. But after being up 11 times one night, and 4 times the next night over an hour each time with an inconsolable little girl I didn't know what else to do. My mom, MIL, and 2x mom SIL all said we had to just let her CIO. So, we did...

Here's what I found out. If I had not let her CIO, and even done something like pick-up/put-down, I don't think we ever would have known what was wrong. After ditching the sleep sack (she was already arms out, but sleeping like crap anyway), when we let her cry for a few minutes, she ended up flipping to her tummy, fussing for a minute, then out. Like, REALLY out, sleeping 11+ hours. Now, she flips to her tummy immediately on her own (because she hates when we do it for her), sleeps 7p-630a, and she NAPS. At 5.5 months old, she had only napped in her crib twice. I am floored by how letting her CIO helped us realize what was wrong for her to even be crying.

So I know this wouldn't be the case for everyone, but just saying that those who may be struggling with letting them CIO, there may be something they need that, only CIO will help you figure out. Just my two cents :)

Re: Sleep problems and those wary of CIO

  • We've had three nights where she slept this long. Night one she cried 30 mins, night 2 was 23, then 15, then 5. She started flipping herself on night 2, but it took her a little bit since she wasn't used to not having the sleep sack restrict her. Last night she still cried for a minute but just until she flipped herself.

  • I didn't read that as only CIO will work for certain issues, but that it may work well for some babies. It's great to read others' experiences - thank you!

  • @Loolaide‌ You're right, that is how I wrote it. So I guess what I meant to say was that for us, CIO did work to find out she needed something that I wouldn't have realized if we tried other methods. And I know CIO is not for everyone, and even those that may try it may find it doesnt work for their baby. In all honesty, I wasn't sure it was for me and I totally understand those that don't want to try it. I wanted to share a success story for those who are wary but not necessarily opposed. So I should have worded it differently.

Here's my question. Anya has never rolled from her back to her back to her stomach, and she can roll stomach to back, but she usually won't. Am I safe to put her to sleep on her tummy?

That is awesome! We did CIO about 4 weeks ago and I'm so glad we did. She's been flipping onto her belly and sleeping so much better, just like you said. It's also helped us now that she can find her paci in her crib and put it in herself. We put like 5 in there so she can find one if she needs it. It was so nice to read success stories about CIO before we tried it ourselves, so hopefully anyone that's at their wit's end finds this helpful.

How old are yours when you do cio

  • @ChiAmy I probably wouldn't put her on her belly if she wasn't rolling both ways, though head control is just as important. Funny thing is, LO has pretty much hated being on her belly for longer than a minute or so until she started rolling to it on her own like I said. She could roll both directions early (3ish months maybe) just didn't like being on her belly. That's why this was so shocking for me that that's what she wanted. She is CONSTANTLY trying to be on her belly now, awake or asleep. She wants to crawl in the worst way, just not quite there with the belly off the ground yet. She's just shy of 5.5 months.

  • I'm still flipping her back in the middle of the night when she ends up on her stomach and cries, but I know we're going to have to do some sort of CIO for these eventually. This is really helpful.

Thank you. Her head control is great, she just is not a roller..my son wasn't either. How long did she cry the first night?

  • I was totally against CIO until one night when I had been up for 3 hours with J, and we felt like that was our only option. Now we are on night 5, and it is definitely working. Makes me feel awful to hear him cry, but he's starting to learn to sooth himself. In fact, he just fell asleep without his pacifier. It's working for us!
  • Sounds like ditching the sleep sack so that she could get comfy is what did it.

  • You should never put baby down on their belly. If they roll there on their own it's okay, but place them down on their back.
