Glucose testing

Re: Glucose testing

  • I've got my test tomorrow. As far as I know I'm getting the 2 hour test instead of the 1 hour test. It's a one and done - no re-testing if you fail the 2 hour. Fingers crossed all goes well!

  • So today has been an adventure...I showed up for my appointment for 8:30 and was told that the location had to close at 11am and I couldn't do my test. I clarified it was a 2 hour test and not the 3 and they said because they need to draw blood 3 times and the time to drink the drink, if I'm sick etc that it couldn't be done. Wtf. So I had to drive to another further location, who when I told them what happened was furious and said they were just being lazy. They shut doors at 11 but their meeting doesn't start til noon.

So long story short...I'm at the other location. Have had my initial fasting blood draw and drank the drink. It was lemon lime I think. I'm lounging in a recliner in a private glucose sitting area with the room and tv to myself! So I guess it all worked out though I was a little annoyed it started the way it did. At least I've only lost an extra 30 minutes instead of more or worse, having to completely reschedule. Hoping for good results today!
  • @camichael84 - I had to walk down the hall to the cafe to buy a muffin during mine because I forgot my snack for afterwards.. AGAIN!  I bought it between hours 1 and 2, and put it in a sealable salad container with a napkin over it so I wouldn't have to see or smell it. I ate it in about 2 bites as I walked to my car after. I think it actually tasted pretty good, though it wouldn't have mattered either way

Currently waiting between my 1 hr and 2 hr draw. Having the appt between drinking the glucola and the 1 hr draw has made the 3 hrs go a little faster. Also, I'm being a bit of a creeper and watching all the mommies coming and going that are drinking the one hour glucola and thinking how they're due the same time as me. Yay for September mommies!

@AnnaS930 I stopped at the gas station on the way and got water, almonds, and beef jerky. And brought a package of cheese and peanut butter sandwich crackers with me. Your muffin sounds better. I am seriously contemplating stopping at Taco Bell on my way home. Also, I downloaded "Shutter Island" to my Kindle and have been reading it today. (Last pregnancy I read "What's Your Number"... totally different genre. Haha.)

Eta: Had to pass the hospital cafeteria on my way up to the appt. It was cruel punishment smelling all the breakfast food, and knowing I can't eat until noon-ish.

  • @camichael84 - yes! I read Shutter Island 2 years ago for my 3 hour glucose test... how was that already 2 years ago?!?

  • First-time poster, sorry ladies but I'm fairly shy.  Anyway, just got a call a full week after my 1hr test saying I failed.  Not sure why, but I'm completely crushed, had to sit here at my desk and cry for an hour.  I'm just getting so sick of all the testing, I have to get an ultrasound at every visit because I had ONE low hormone level at my 12 week appointment (been normal ever since), so they are convinced something is wrong, even though baby measures completely normally every time.  And now they are trying to tell me that my hormones are so high that I can't control my blood sugar?  Which is it, it can't be both?!?  Secretly I want to tell the docs to go shove it, no more appointments and I'll see them when I go into labor.  Not to mention that when I took the 1hr test I was just getting over a stomach flu, hadn't eaten normally in almost a week.  Why are the doctors so desperate to prove something is wrong with the baby?

Hope you all have better news than me, best of luck for healthy, happy pregnancies!
  • @SciFiMomma - I cried in my first pregnancy when I failed my 1 hour, and teared up this time too. Hang in there, sounds like you've got a lot going on and try to find some silver linings in the increased monitoring that they're doing. You're in the home stretch now, keep your head up!

  • @AnnaS930 You mentioned "Shutter Island" before and how you couldn't put it down, and that's why I picked it. So far, good book recommendation!

  • @SciFiMomma I second Anna. I cried when I was diagnosed with GD with my first, and can see myself having the same reaction if I fail again.

This may be a small consolation, but about half of failed one hours go on to pass the three hour test. So while you will have more testing, it doesn't mean you necessarily have GD. And even if you do, your baby will be just fine as long as you're controlling your sugar. Hoping all the best for you!

  • @camichael84, Bless you.  I wish you all the best for a happy and healthy pregnancy!
  • I'm all finished up with my 2 hour test, but I won't likely know the results until my next appointment with my OB on Tuesday. Unless they call sooner. Fingers crossed I pass! Good luck everyone!
  • I'm glad I already had my glucose test and passed. I ate a half of a medium bag of dark chocolate mom's in 2 days!
  • Well apparently I just barely missed passing the 1 hour glucose test, so guess who's got the 3 hour Monday morning?

  • @SarahDarah333 bummer :( hopefully you pass the 3 hour!!

  • I am actually allergic to almost everything in that drink so my doctor and I sought out other options. I was going to one do the finger prickly testing 4x a day for 4 to 6 weeks. At my last appointment she said I could discuss the hemoglobin  A1C test. It measures your sugars over the last 3 months.  I am just glad I didn't have to drink that and risk a reaction. As far as I know the results came back good!
Just something to consider if you can't take the drink.
  • I failed my one hour test.  I got a 150.

It's the last stretch ladies hang in there! Soon we will get to hold our little bundles of love!

Good luck to those of you who haven't taken your tests yet!
  • I have my Glucose test on Monday. They honestly told me nothing about it other than that I couldn't eat any processed sugar the day before, and the morning of I would need to eat a high protein only breakfast and then an hour later down two juice boxes they supplied to me at my last visit (equaling 50 grams of sugar), and then 30 minutes after drinking said juice report to the clinic for blood draw. I'm assuming this is the hour test?

I'm not sure how nervous to feel about it. My mother had GD with my little brother and she was merely advised to lay off the potatoes. However, if I test positive for GD and then don't respond quickly to treatment or diet change then I risk out of my clinic and have to transfer to the regular hospital. Hospitals have a tendency to upset me immensely so I'm a little concerned in that regard... but more for that the the actual GD.

I failed the one-hour (142) and have my three-hour set for Tuesday. Really not looking forward to it. :s
  • @abyrd1227 I failed mine too- have to take the 3 hour Monday :( Right there with you- not looking forward to it!

  • Found out I failed my 3 hr last night. Already started my diet and testing my sugar. My dinner numbers were okay. My fasting was not so good. Not too surprising since my morning numbers were my problem last pregnancy.

  • Sorry to hear that @camichael84 but it sounds like you've already got a plan for going forward which is great. I should find out my results next Tuesday....
  • Have 5 minutes left of my 3 hour right now. Can't WAIT to get something to eat, haha.

  • @camichael84 oh, I'm sorry. What a bummer! I was rooting for you to pass it. At least you already know what to do. Aaaaaand you can join us on the GD check-in too :) We can use another experienced person.

  • @camichael84 sorry to hear that
  • I haven't spoken to my OB yet, but I'm thinking this doesn't look good?

    Fasting: 88
    1 hour: 159
2 hour: 177 (Why would this go up??)
3 hour: not entered in the system yet

  • @homebird - ummmmm, I've never seen such a thing. And with 3hr not entered perhaps there was a lab error??

Fasting and 1 hour look really good. 2 hour would have easily been a pass if numbers kept trending (under 155 passes 2 hour.. I know because I got a 155).  That's really wacky, I'm afraid it doesn't look good in that I'm afraid they'll have to redo it... but that's a complete guess not knowing the situation.

  • @homebird Have you heard from your OB yet? The two hour being higher than the one hour doesn't make sense to me. Other than that, your fasting and one hour numbers look good.

  • i apologize i did not read all the comments in this thread as i think there were a 163+ new comments since the last time.  I just need a place to shout out that I PASSED!!!! with flying colors...i have a terrible sweet tooth this pregnancy and even though i passed i really feel like i need to cut back on the sweets and carbs (they seem to go hand in hand for me)...but i'm just so happy i passed!

  • Alright after a bit of a freak out, I'm stoked to say I passed the 3 hour! I really wasn't feeling well the first hour of it, then I felt ok, and afterwards I really felt off. I brought snacks and began to inhale them the moment I was allowed, and thankfully I didn't drive myself because I was dizzy, had hot flashes, and my lips began to get tingly and go numb- so weird. My doctor called this afternoon to check on me- apparently the third draw my blood sugar was severely low and she was worried about me- but I'm AOK. She called again just around 9 a.m. to let me know that I passed all three draws with flying colors, and mentioned I probably shouldn't drink anything with that much concentrated sugar in it because my body clearly reacts very strongly to it, and to make sure I eat (never a problem lol). So relieved, and I freaking love my doctor :)

Hey ladies!! I'm so sorry- I just can't read through all the previous posts. But I am going to go in for my 1 hour glucose test tomorrow. It is a non fasting test. My doctor gave me barely any information but to show up so I still have a lot of questions.

When should I go? (I can go anytime now that I have the summer off from work)

what should I eat for breakfast?

is eating ice cream and waffles with chocolate chips and syrup today going to affect my test tomorrow?

    what can I expect?

So sorry if these have been answered already, just don't have the time to go through all the previous posts and I'm a FTM and this is all so new to me....thank you!!

    @Ah825

When should I go? I'd recommend the morning, but any time of day would work.

what should I eat for breakfast? A protein heavy breakfast is best. Eggs and turkey bacon is a good choice. A small amount of carbs probably won't hurt, but you don't want to over do it and skew the test.

is eating ice cream and waffles with chocolate chips and syrup today going to affect my test tomorrow? No. That's not how it works. Your body will process (or not process, if you are diabetic) the sugar you eat soon after you eat it.

what can I expect? You'll go in, get your drink if they haven't already given it to you), and will have 5 minutes to finish it. It's only 8 oz, so very doable. Then you'll sit around for an hour before before they draw the blood. Pretty easy. Pretty straight forward. Some people get dizzy or nauseous (I never did), and it's a good idea to have a snack for afterwards.

  • @Ah825 Agree with @camichael84 on the protein heavy, carb light breakfast. If you can eat breakfast at least half an hour to an hour before you start the drink/test I'd do that too. I ate a bowl of greek yogurt with granola maybe 5-10 minutes before I chugged my glucola which likely helped me fail the 1 hour by just a few points (easily passed the 3 hour, but I felt terrible all day after). You'll fail the screening test either way if you have GD. I just regret eating immediately before the 1 hour.

  • I took the 3 hour test yesterday; still waiting on results.  I was expecting to go to work after the test ended, but I felt so horridly nauseous, hot, flushed, and icky after that I just went home and slept all day.  There has GOT to be a better way to screen for GD that doesn't involve missing a day of work and making poor pregnant women sick!
