tanning while prego

Hi ladies, so I'm not some obsessive tanner by any means but I have been really wanting to tan.  I have done a lot of research and from what I have read, tanning is safe as long as the beds are very well ventilated to avoid over heating.  I have a few weddings, baby showers and bridal showers this summer and I would feel better if I had a little tan.  what are all your thought on tanning beds and spray tans every once in awhile?

You know...I honestly didn't think people used tanning beds anymore. I went to the dermatologist yesterday because I was concerned about a few moles. Somehow tanning bed usage came up and she said she still had so many patients come in or that she sees in public that obviously still use them. I was surprised. I guess it's something some people do and just don't talk about.

I'm a paranoid sunscreen fanatic (with myself and especially my kids) and just can't imagine using a tanning bed.
  • Well I kinda figured that's how the conversation would go haha. I'm not frying in a tanning bed people! i have seen so many pregnant women over the years at our community pool, how is an hour in the sun different then my 8 minute leg tanner?  As for the self tanner, I honestly don't see any harm.  I have read so many articles including baby center that have one specific article on how self tanner can do wonders for your self esteem while pregnant.  i understand the concern, I really do!  I'm honestly talking about a one time deal before an event.  Thanks for the advice ladies, I respect all your opinions.  However I do see fake tanner in my future, maybe even a leg tanner. Gasp!!!! I might even get my hair done... An apology to anyone who doesn't share my humor, I am going to blame it on the hormones
  • @fourPsinapod yeah I don't even know where to start..
  • I can't even.
  • @joyful08 that's funny my husband asks me the same question at least once a week. I think it's called being a women....
  • I would say if you want to spray-tan you are likely ok (depends on the products). Many are effectively sugar-based/edible.
  • I would just lay out in the sun if I were you!!

My OB actually says no to self tanners, even the stuff like Jergens.
Personally, I would err on the side of caution.
    And a grammar lesson.
That's good to know!! I used to use the jergens natural glow stuff on my face. I loved how it also has sunscreen.
  • Why would you do something that causes cancer? Honestly that baffles me... The difference between people sitting in the sun or people going tanning is that hopefully people sitting in the sun are wearing sunscreen and hats and stuff to protect their skin, by going tanning you're doing the opposite. Everything I've read has said tanning is not OK during pregnancy (most say it's not even without pregnancy).

When it comes to my baby I like to follow the rule of why risk it? If I read something could be bad or hasn't been tested in pregnancy before I avoid it to the best of my ability. It's a small price to pay to give my future child the best chance at being healthy.

    Oh this got fun fast!
Ditto the anti-tanning. You want to be as healthy as possible for your kid, right? If you wouldn't smoke, you shouldn't tan. Even in natural light, IMO. In my family, skin cancer isn't really an issue of IF but WHEN. I've never tried to tan in my life, and I've already had two biopsies and a removal of pre-cancerous cells. Three people in my immediate family have had basal cell carcinomas removed. Why bring that on yourself? Why make your kid watch you suffer? So you could impress some strangers one summer?

Why? I use it and other tanning products. I know there is some talk about not using particular face washes (I'm doing it anyway, because from what I can tell, studies done that show that there is danger were in oral doses of the specific ingredients, and HIGH doses. Not the 2% salicylic acid stuff), but I hadn't heard this, and I use Jergens and another tanner.

Well. For one, sorry about all the tense convo on here. But I would not personally use the tanning bed because of 1. The waves it gives off are similar to a microwave and that can't be good for your bump at all. They are much more penetrating than the suns rays. 2. Stretch marks! Any sun exposure but especially from a tanning bed will dry your skin out in those places too deep for lotions to reach and increase your odds of stretch marks. I am prone to them so no thanks. That's just mho. And yes. I am one of the women like you that ask for opinions and sometimes already know what I'm going to do. I thought your generalization was funny. Whatever you do I would ask your doctor. I'm pretty sure tanning beds will not allow you in if they know you're preg go so that right there may be a warning sign. Love and luck to you!

When I asked why, she said because there are no studies to show it is or is not safe.
I never questioned it after that, or researched.
It's not something I regularly use anyhow, so it wasn't a big deal for me.
I think she tends to err on the side of extra cautious too.

  • I'm a tanner 1-2 times a week when not pregnant because of acne and winter depression. To clear up some confusion. There are beds out there with better bulbs now that help reduce the risk of cancer and you also lessen the risk if you don't let yourself burn.

The HCG in your system while pregnant allows you to burn easier so really even women laying by a pool aren't helping their babies. You are increasing your risk of a fever if you get sunburned and that is not good for the baby.

I error on the side of caution for my baby's sake and only use products my doctor has researched because to me the baby's development is way more important than me feeling good about my legs.
