Glucose testing

Re: Glucose testing

  • Don't be hard on yourselves if you fail! Of all things that could go wrong in pregnancy this is by far probably one of the best!! So you watch your food intake and walk more for your last trimester, it's stuff we should all be doing anyway or are already.  Just remember there are way worse conditions for you and baby, and this is only a temporary thing.

  • I don't know if I passed or not, but I did the one hour screening yesterday. I drank the fruit punch and then had my regular appointment, then the lab tech came and took my blood after an hour passed. With DS1, I had the two hour test and passed, but I guess that's not as common? I *really* hope I pass the one hour, because I am so freaked out about GD. I make huge babies, DS1 was 9.5 lbs and DS2 is already measuring way ahead, so my OB keeps talking about it like she expects me to fail. Like she thinks maybe they missed it in my last pregnancy? I had my son in a totally different hospital system, and I always feel like my current doctors are subtly implying my old doctors didn't know what they were doing.

I passed my one hour glucose test this morning.  I was surprised by how small the drink was.  I was expecting it to be much bigger.  My test was scheduled for 9:20-10:20 am, so I just didn't eat anything before just to make I passed.  I know, that's probably bad to do but I did not want to take the three hour test.  phew!
  • Fail club: I failed at the one hour mark during the one hour glucose screening and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). I passed the rest of it though...I've been diagnosed with pregnancy "glucose intolerance" - but not gestational diabetes.

I'm still flabbergasted because there isn't a history of diabetes or anything in the family, but the body does weird things with all the hormones during pregnancy. So like what @RN1stBae said, I'll just have to suck it up these last twelve weeks for LO and eat smaller (low carb) meals throughout the day.
  • Sitting in the waiting room right now for the 1 hour; still have 45 minutes before the blood draw. First 5 minutes I felt kind of buzzed, like I drank a glass of wine quickly.  Now I just feel super lethargic and out of it. Baby is going nuts, though.

  • @rock1cherry So, in the end I only did the one hour test. They tell you 2 hours to accommodate for delays and I had to fast since my doctor apparently wanted bloodwork that I wasn't expecting. Nurse told me if I fail this test then I get the 2 hour (not the 3).

Two different nurses took my blood, one arm hurts and the other I don't feel a thing. Headed to the office now and all I want to do is crawl into bed. Hope no one expects much of me today  :(
  • And I was certainly not prepared to receive a giant Q-tip with instructions to swab myself vaginally and rectally in a few weeks!?! :o
  • And I was certainly not prepared to receive a giant Q-tip with instructions to swab myself vaginally and rectally in a few weeks!?! :o
GBS test. But my OB did the swabbing...

  • @camichael84 Lucky!! I'd prefer someone else did this... off to research GBS with Dr. Google!
  • @geminigirl16 It's not a big deal, results-wise. From what I've been told, women get Group B Strep on and off throughout life. If you're positive, it means a round of antibiotics during labor so you don't pass anything to baby. I was GBS positive with my first. The worst that came from it is that I didn't get into the labor tub because the antibiotics took so long to go through the IV that I couldn't hold out on the Epi any longer (and that was only because I'm allergic to penicillin, which goes through much faster).

  • Turns out I passed the 3 hour test with flying colors except the first draw after they gave me the bucket of syrup to drink. I wonder if that's because they give the same amount of syrup to everyone regardless of size? I am pretty small to be drinking that much of that crap.
  • @jas1982 - I had the same results as you last time. Failed the 1 hour and failed the first draw of the 3 hour test. It most often means that you're exhibiting just a bit of insulin resistance, your body takes a little bit longer to respond to a large amount of glucose but it eventually compensates and handles it just fine. Luckily, you won't often be intaking 100grams of straight glucose from a fasting state, so while it gave me a heads up to watch carbs a bit better, there wasn't much else needed to be done.

  • @Megan324 it really isn't that bad.  This is my 4th time having GD and it gets easier every time.  It does suck to give up certain things for the remainder of the pregnancy but the time goes by quickly.  @AnnaS930 has a great suggestion about the slushie in the hospital!  It has become tradition that I pack a 6-pack of Coke in my hospital bag and my mom brings me a pint of Graeter's chocolate chip ice cream when she comes to the hospital lol.

  • Add me to the 1 hour fail club!  I go on Wednesday to do my 3 hour test.  I had GD with DS, so I'm almost expecting it this time, this time around I did start eating better earlier on.  I am kind of looking forward to the 3 hours in the doctor's office reading a book.  I can't remember the last time I sat down to read

My doctor specifically asked me if I wanted to take the 1 hour or 2. I just said do the 2 hour and be done with it. She "prescribed" the 2 hour to me so I assume that's what I will get. We will see what the lab does!

  • @AMT1107 I took a book to read for my 3 hour last time as well. I'll be doing the same this time, and enjoying my toddler free morning. (I love staying home with DD, and wouldn't have it any other way, but 3 hours all to myself sounds nice.)

  • I read Shutter Island last time during mine.. although I had seen the movie I got sucked right into the book. Any time they did blood draws I was tapping my foot waiting to get back out and keep reading!  Made the test go by really quickly

  • It's really NBD.  The most annoying part for me is sitting there for the hour because I wish I could be doing other things.  I actually really love the Glucola!  But I'm a freak when it comes to sweets. :)

  • Soooo is there a chance that I was just stressed or something because I ate pasta for lunch and my blood sugar after 1 hour was 80.
and I had more than 15 carbs for breakfast and my number was 72.
    fasting number was 60.
     I don't understand.
I'm going to keep testing this weekend and maybe call on Monday to see if I could retake the test. Or take the 3 hour.

Just chugged my orange drank! It wasn't bad. Reminded me of Gatorade and I love Gatorade. It was cold though and I can't imagine it warm. I think that would be nasty. Now to dive into 11/22/63 for an hour...

  • @RG1- I started that book and never ended up completing it (was probably reading online at work and the link got taken down). As a Mainer, I'm a born Stephen King fan.. hope you enjoy!

Also, I'm really happy so many on this board think Glucola is "not bad" or even "good". I was pretty much alone thinking it was delish last go-round!

  • Failed my one hour, but passed my 3 hour. All I was told was that my test results were normal. I have a routine appointment tomorrow, so I am curious to find about more about my test results.
  • Failed my one hour but the nurse said not to worry too much before the 3 hour as my numbers didn't look bad at all. Here's hoping. Was going to bring laptop and try to work. But that seems silly, might as well relax w a book...
  • I had GD with my daughter 5 years ago and it was easily (although frustrating at times) controlled by diet.  Since I had had it before and am already high risk my Dr had me testing my glucose at 12 weeks.  It only took a week to discover the GD was back and since my fasting numbers were the worst of the bunch - straight to insulin injections I went.  I was surprised to find that the shots hurt less than the finger pricks!  Needles so tiny you sometimes can't even feel it at all.  Although it may feel like a crisis if you are diagnosed it's really not - you just need to be more vigilant about what and how much you are putting into your body. There are bonus ultrasounds to track baby's growth (who doesn't LOVE seeing that tiny life growing every chance you can?!) and usually a team of Drs and nurses monitoring your numbers to ensure you are both staying safe. And extra BONUS is when you go into labor, instead of just ice chips, you get all the delicious popsicles you want!  Hang in there GD mamas!!  You and baby will be just fine!

  • @annas930 I had the fruit punch and thought it was quite tasty. Mine wasn't cold but I'm sure it would have been tastier if it had been. I'll get my results on Thursday or Friday but I'm pretty sure I passed. At no point did I feel dizzy or lightheaded. About 20 minutes in I got really sleepy but that's it!
  • Did mine today... That crap made me nauseous. Like, 1st trimester nauseous. Ugh. I thought I was going to vomit the whole way to the appt. Results back tomorrow, but my doctor said that people who have trouble drinking it typically don't have GD.
  • RG1RG1 member
Question for people who have "failed" it: did your eyes go fuzzy after drinking it? About 10 minutes after I felt woozy and my eyes were all fuzzy and I couldn't look at the light. I mentioned it to my mom and she said it could have meant I have GD if I felt fuzzy from too high of sugar. Obviously I should just wait until tomorrow but I am of course overthinking and trying to analyze my own results. Haha

Did mine today followed by the Rogam shot. I had the results by the time my shot was done.
  • @RG1 I failed the 1 hr, badly, so badly they bypassed the 3 hr and diagnosed me right away. I felt fine drinking it. I don't drink many sugary drinks or eat much sugar in my daily life so I was expecting feeling sick from it (you'd expect it with how high my blood sugar got!). But nope, I was fine the entire hour, no dizziness or nausea, no fuzziness, and just crashed a couple hours later and took a nap.
