Glucose testing

Sooo how did it go? Going tomorrow and googled photos and a few sites starting talking about how the drink is toxic??! I didn't click the site because I've got enough to worry about right now but curious how it's gone so far for everyone. This is my 2nd baby but first time taking the drink... :)

Judging by your Monday BF and this, I say you need to stay away from Google lol  :D

Mine went great! Probably because I haven't gotten the results yet. I did it on Saturday so DH could keep me entertained and it went well. The orange drink was good, tasted like flat orange soda with a little bit of Gatorade. They gave me the option of lemon, orange, or fruit punch, all cold, and told me the women that have done it more than once typically choose orange. I didn't feel nauseous or dizzy and DH and I just talked the whole hour so I didn't mind the wait. I did crash an hour or two later and had to take a nap, other than that everything went smoothly.

ETA: I'm a weird person and whenever I can't eat something  (dieting or fasting) I like watching DH or someone next to me eat it, like a 'you enjoy it because I can't' type of thing. So I made DH get himself a coffee and a muffin and was so happy watching him while we waited the hour. He told me I was weird like 5 times and that everyone would think he was the worst husband ever eating that in front of his starving pregnant wife but I lived vicariously through him until that last chocolate chunk was gone!

  • I have mine on Wednesday, I'll update you then.  Thankfully you drink before your appointment so you can get your blood draw after the appointment and you don't have to sit and be bored.

  • I received my fruit punch drink on Thursday at my OB appointment and I drank it this morning! I just had to go to any blood work lab in my area and get it drawn an hour after I finished it.
I didn't hate the taste but it was hard to get down.
I arrived at the lab with minutes to spare lol.

    hopefully I pass!

  • My doc gave me the drink early to take home and chill...i just had to drink it within an hour of my appointment time and let them know when i finished the drink so they knew when to take my blood.  I have yet to get the results back, but i'm feeling good about it...i hope i'm right!

  • I had mine done exactly 3 weeks ago! I had 5 minutes to drink the red kool-aid. It was chilled and I actually liked it :) But I didn't feel too hot waiting the hour to pass. My head hurt and I felt dizzy. I listened to a podcast to get my mind off of it. You aren't allowed to drink water nor drink during the waiting time so that was annoying. I was so thirsty!

I have read a lot of negativity about the ingredients of the drink. I have also read that some midwives may try to be creative with "alternatives" like gummy bears. I haven't done enough research to know if they elicit the same results as the sugary drink and I didn't question it when my OB asked for it done. I figured having diabetes and not knowing would be worse than drinking a little bottle of weird kool-aid.

I am going through a midwife and doing a home birth...I have the option of completely opting out, drinking Glucola, drinking apple juice, or doing personal finger pricks for 24 hours or whatever it is...Unless there's some solid research out there that Glucola is dangerous (which I don't think there is), I will be drinking Glucola and calling it good.

I did mine today.  It wasn't the nightmare I envisioned.  At all.  The worst part was the boredom.

I got the orange flavor (chilled; which I'm guessing greatly improves the taste) and it tasted like those long, flat, plastic pouch popsicles (Otter Pops?) only melted and very slightly carbonated.  I chugged it, but would have been fine sipping (I had the standard 5 minutes to finish).

No fasting required, but my doctor did say I might want to avoid a lot of sugar the day of my test (no problem since it was at 9:45 AM).  Otherwise, I was to eat normally.

I've had an aversion to sweets this whole pregnancy, so I expected to have a bad time with it, but it was no big deal.  I had a tiny bit of dizziness/fuzziness and a little headache (but I've had an earache for a couple days), but that's it.  I grabbed a small meal on the way home, then took a nap and I've felt perfectly fine ever since.

My doctor's office had no problem with me drinking water while I waited (which seems to be unusual), so I had a little while I was waiting since I was thirsty and didn't really want the syrupy taste sitting in my mouth the whole time.

They said they don't call with results unless you fail and that it would take 3 days to get the results, normally, but that they're down a nurse so it could be longer if they're going to call, otherwise they'll let me know the results at my next appointment (which is 3 days from now, so I'm hoping they've got my results by then).  I think that's a ridiculous amount of time to wait, personally, but whatever.  I have no reason to think I failed.

I took red flavor at 12 weeks and orange at 24. Orange was better. I was one point away from needing the 3h test this last time so I need to repeat again in a few weeks. Guess I'll try lemon if they have it. Makes me feel "yucky" but that's about it.

Im not super excited about having to repeat again. But I don't want a 12 lb birth experience if I can help it. So I'll just suck it up and go for the repeat.
  • Just finished drinking red one and not so bad, I feel jitterish a lil but okay. Now to wait, thank goodness the office doesn't have the tv on with all the med ads. I hate that! Good luck ladies, almost to the finish line :)

  • Anyone doing a two hour glucose test? My OB offered the 1 hour to begin with, but said if I do the 1 hour and fail I will need to do the 3 hour. But if I do the 2 hour that's all I have to do. Diabetes runs in my family so I opted just to get the 2 hour so I don't need to possibly give up 4 hours for this. Its the first time I've heard of a two hour test and just wondered if anyone else has that option?
  • I did it yesterday and had the clear one, I swear it was spiked haha it had a strange aftertaste and I had a pretty good buzz while I was waiting! My veins weren't cooperating so I had to get jabbed a bunch of times in both arms too and reacted to the bandaid adhesive so have rashes everywhere they put one... it was an interesting day! I never drink pop so I found it pretty hard to drink the drink, fx results come back good!
  • SO that was a fast turn around.....I failed.
by a LOT. They don't want me to retake anything lol I have to go to a 3 hour GD class tomorrow.

    Ugh...

Had my 1 hour this morning, got the orange drink. Spent most of the hour with my head between my legs- VERY light headed but got progressively better as the hour passed. Crossing all fingers, toes, etc that I pass & don't have to do the 3 hour this time around (and crossing them for all you ladies too!!!)

  • Sorry about the bad news @Megan324 :(
  • @Megan324 did you find out today after taking it yesterday? Just curious about what timing to expect. Sorry about the length of the class, hope all goes well with that and the managing!
  • @abberson Yup! Tested yesterday morning and found out at 1:30 this afternoon.
    @rock1cherry Thanks :(

    I'm really upset.

  • @Megan324 - I already commented on the other post, but I just had a flashback to receiving my 1 hour test results. They called me the day after my appointment and when I got the news I sat at my desk and cried. Luckily I sit in the corner of the office, so I kept quiet about it, but the tears just poured as I texted my husband that I had failed. It felt terrible.  Somehow semi-failing the 3 hour test wasn't nearly as upsetting because I had come to terms with it.. almost better you don't have to go through the 3 hour test, it's really a biatch.
One redeeming factor was being able to still indulge in some of the foods that made me happy.. like cheese. And a good tablespoon of peanut butter (adding protein to carbs can help your body process it slower).

  • @Megan324 sorry to hear that! Just remember that it absolutely isn't your fault. Hopefully the class will give you some great insight on how to manage through the rest of pregnancy
  • I took mine last week and I found it to be rather relaxing since I was having a crazy week at work.  I had the fruit punch which wasn't as great as the orange or cola versions I've had previously but I managed to suck it down within my 5 minute window and read quietly for a whole hour.  I'm I weird for saying it was very peaceful and I wouldn't mind doing it again for the quiet?  The only crappy part was no sugar that morning so no tea or coffee and I had to miss second breakfast due to a meeting but I managed to make up for it with a very wonderful cheeseburger to help balance out all the damn sugar.  The baby was about to bounce out of my dang uterus!

I called DH and cried when I found out I failed three hour. I fully expected to have GD, but it still felt horrible to know I did. I eventually came to terms with it, and it wasn't as bad as I'd imagined. However, it didn't help that my boss at the time laughed when I told her my diagnosis. I don't care that she had it, too, that wasn't the appropriate response.

I ate so much cheese and nuts on my diet. It made it feel less restricting to be able to indulge in those things. Also, I still was able to eat my favorite carbs (potatoes, pasta, watermelon, ice cream) in moderation. It's all about portion control and finding the lowest carb options.

Eta everything that got ate by TB.

  • i had mine last month, flat sprite lemon-lime flavor. i didnt eat before hand. it didnt taste great but not like death either. they served mine chilled. had to call them a week later to get the results, because they obviously care!! i did pass.

Sorry for all the ladies having trouble, it is not the end of the world, but i definitely understand being upset. Chins up!!! you are still growing an awesome little human in there!

I think turn around depends on your practice. Last pregnancy, it took them 3 days to get the results to me.

If you fail the one hr, you move on the the 3 hr. You fail that, you get a GD diagnosis. You'll likely take a class to teach you how to manage your sugar via diet and exercise. Typically, you'll be checking your sugar through out the day with a blood sugar monitor. You'll also receive extra monitoring of baby via non-stress tests and maybe u/s.

  • @camichael84  and now I teared up because you did

  • I did the 3 hour today, despite my reservations about doing it (that I have already complained about to some of you!). It truly sucked but I did make it all the way through it... and passed out after I left (waiting for a hamburger and fries... so close). Fingers crossed I pass.

Sorry to @Megan324 and anyone else for whom it hasn't gone well, please try not to blame yourselves! GD is manageable and sometimes it's just a thing that's happening because of your hormones. All we can do is the best we can for our babies. There's no need to be hard on yourself, your body is doing a lot of incredible and difficult things right now. No surprise things might be a little out of wack.

FWIW, I thought the orange was slightly better than the lemon-lime, and I did not find the drink as unspeakably nauseating as a lot of people do. BUT, I have heard from many people that if you ask your lab you can sub something instead of the drink. 25 jellybeans, pancakes, or some measured amount of regular fruit juice with an equal amount of sugar to the glucola are all things that might be acceptable to your lab. Ask them!
  • I did mine this morning. Orange drink tasted good! Watched a breastfeeding video upstairs in my doctor's office while I waited so not bad at all. Find out tomorrow if I pass, fingers crossed. Hope everyone else who still has to go in does too!

thats actually really cool that you got to watch a video while waiting. if i didnt have my regular doc visit scheduled on the same day they would have shooed me out to rot in the waiting room for an hour. instead i rotted in the tiny room waiting for doctor for 50 minutes.
  • Ugh, just found out I failed my one hour. They haven't called but I got the results online, they'd said we'd talk about the results at my next appointment in a week. Yuck. Not sure what to do until then!

  • Mine is next week - they sent me home with the drink last appointment. I'm supposed to drink it at home, then when I check in, tell them what time I finished drinking it so they can test me an hour later. One nurse said I could put it over ice, one said I couldn't, but they both said I had to drink it in 5 minutes.
The container is pretty small (like a half water bottle). I was expecting like what you have to drink before a colonoscopy for some reason.... Like a gallon. So I'm excited to hear it's not that bad and that it's not really that much.
  • I took mine this morning.  They gave me orange, chilled glucola at the beginning of my appointment, then I had the appointment and walked over to get my labs.  It was not as bad as last pregnancy when I puked, but I drank water and had a slice of bread before the test to keep from being sick.  I pray that I pass because I DO NOT want to sit through a 3 hour one.

  • So I assume no one else has been offered the one time 2 hour test I have?
  • @rock1cherry I am quite certain that I am doing the 2 hour test first thing tomorrow morning. My OB wasn't clear when she gave me the requisition form & I automatically assumed it was the 1 hr. However, when I booked my appointment at the hospital, they told me to fast and that the appointment would take at least 2 hrs.

Crossing my fingers that I pass and am trying to decide what to have as my "last" meal!
  • Haha @geminigirl16 yeah that sounds the same. I have to fast for mine as well. You'll have to let me know how it goes! At least it's a one and done. No 3 hour follow up. Good luck! Mine isn't until the 23rd.
  • I did the 1-hour glucose test yesterday morning. I chugged the lemon-lime and was fine. The nurses let me hang out in the NST room because it had recliner chairs and a private tv. I was able to work while I waited. And I passed! Wohoo!!!!
  • For sure! I'll keep you posted on how it goes @rock1cherry
