Re: A Strong Start to Breastfeeding/BFing Q&A

  • How fast do you go through those little nipple pads? I bought a huge box of disposable ones to get me through the begining and until I could make some washable ones. It's been 2 weeks and 2 days and I'm nearly out! I didn't realize I'd be leaking so much!
Mom hack I figured out while leaking over the weekend at the IL's- fold a burp cloth hot dog style and stick it in your bra so it covers both boobs. I definitely leaked but it didn't show!

I've done this, with a receiving blanket at home one night. Lol just started leaking and baby needed me so I just folded, stuffed, and grabbed a clean diaper, lol. Burp cloth would work a lot better!

@babyfmama DD's ped told us yesterday that it's super hard to diagnose thrush simply from seeing white patches on the tongue. I was really upset because DD has been so fussy for over a week, spitting up excessively, has had red spots on her butt that absolutely will not go away, and white on her tongue that I thought was milk and after my nipples became super sore and I got the pins and needle feeling along with bright pink nipples, it all came together. I was crying to the pediatrician for not catching it sooner and now she has white patches on her lip, inside of her cheeks, and roof of her mouth. I personally had a hard time telling that anything was wrong with my breasts because the pins and needles, aches and pains, and sore nipples of thrush don't feel all that different from my regular sensations from being a breastfeeding/pumping mom. If your DS doesn't have any signs of thrush and if your breasts/nipples don't feel different from your regular sensations then I'd say just keep an eye on his mouth and see if that white on the back of his tongue spreads or if you start to see any white patches on the sides of his mouth, on his lips, or on the roof of his mouth. From what I understand, the bright pink sore nipples on mom are a fairly good sign that there's thrush.
Now I'm questioning thrush. My girls don't have any signs of it but I do have bright pink sore nipples. They've been like that for a long time though, I assumed it was from tons of pumping. And my pins and needles feeling only lasts for the first minute or so of the feeding. And I don't get it pumping. So I assumed it was normal? Crap.
  • @Sunshinebins I'm sure you can have sore pink nipples without thrush being the culprit. I attributed mine to DD's poor latch and the fact that she turns her head with my nipples in her mouth to torture me. It just took me putting all of her symptoms together with the fact that I was GBS positive and pumped full of antibiotics and me having bright pink sore nipples to realize that our circumstance was thrush. I didn't mean to scare you! It's definitely worth looking into though if you are concerned!

Thanks. I did ask my doctor a week or 2 ago and they said if the babies don't have symptoms, it's likely not thrush. But I've read conflicting info on that! I will ask again this week!

How is it going treating it? I've heard it can be a real pain to get rid of! I hope yours isn't

We just went to her ped yesterday so we just started the oral nystatin and nystatin cream for her bottom yesterday. The yeast rash on her butt has actually gotten worse and I feel so so bad. I've done so much laundry in the past day and a half that I'm going insane, and boiling all her nipples and all my pumping parts after using has been really annoying. As for me, I just was told to get 7 day monistat and use that on my nipples and clean with a vinegar solution before and after each pump or feed. My breasts haven't been overly painful like a lot of people talk about when they talk about thrush, so I'm mostly just concerned about DD and know that I need to get rid of mine so that she doesn't catch it again once hers is gone! It's mainly just annoying and I really hope it goes away quickly and doesn't come back!

LO is a week and a half old and he seems to get frustrated during MON feedings. He eats great during the day, every 2-3 hours and plenty of poops and pees. But at night he wakes up after only being down about 20-30 minutes. By midway through the night my boobs feel empty and he just stresses out at the nipple, huffs and puffs and makes his little snorty noises, pulls off and is just overall spazzy. It's like I'm all tapped out. I know he's hungry because when he pulls off, he roots around, sticks his hands in his mouth, etc.

I figure he's cluster feeding which I expect, but it's the fact that it seems he can't get anything out of me by that point that's getting me frustrated. Not sure if I should try something else. Going to the ped today and we'll see what she says.
  • 13 days post partum and still struggling with the latching business... Some days are better than others and I've taken to using a hospital grade pump to take care
of other feedings (and supplementing a bit when I still don't have enough). I've had not great but sometimes success with a shield.

DH just went back to work and now I'm struggling with figuring out how to fit in pumping and caring for LO.

And when to call it on this latching business. Doing both seems to be confusing us both and while she falls asleep at the breast she sucks down bottles at a record pace. I'm not crying the way I was last week (baby blues are for real) but I'm getting so very discouraged and the mixed feeding methods are exhausting.

My LO has similar issues in the MOTN and is three weeks today. I pump during the day a bit and will then give her a bottle during MOTN feeds, she only has two, since she has issues latching in the MOTN. It appears that she's too tired to properly latch since she just lets it fall out of her mouth. After the bottle though she'll latch a little bit
  • I figured out that it isn't a puddle of pee my baby and I usually wake up in- it's breast milk!! Any advice? I don't want to waste the milk but do those milkie savers really work?
  • Now I gotta Google milk savers. I feel like I leak so much at night!
  • Also, went to ped this morning, lo doing great but asked dr. About white on tongue and dr says we got a case of thrush.....dang it! Luckily that's the only symptom...so far hopefully we knock it out before it turns into an ordeal.
  • Those that have recommended lecithin - does it matter if it's sunflower or soya?
  • Now I gotta Google milk savers. I feel like I leak so much at night!
They're basically cups you put in your bra to catch milk- Ezra only wakes up twice a night so I leak like crazy! I'm gunna try them tonight and I'll let you guys know!

curious about this too, I had to pump at 2 am bc I was so engorged. So afraid of mastitis.

From what I understand, either is fine but sunflower lecithin is better of the two because it's cold pressed rather than chemically extracted like soy. Eta: soy lecithin can be a bit hard on the stomach for some people too at first.

My lactation consultant said she recommends sunflower over soy, can't remember what the reasons were off the top of my head. Haven't gotten clogged ducts yet with this baby, but I used to have them all the time with my son and I wish I had known about it then!
  • Anybody still struggling with thrush?
  • Anybody still struggling with thrush?
LO was incredibly fussy and kept pulling off the breast during feedings last night and I keep seeing this white on his tongue and have been experiencing extremely painful nipples during and in between feeds so I called the ped today and they called in medication to treat thrush just now. I'm a little concerned that they didn't need to see LO but maybe it's one of those things they want to get ahead of? I hope it is really thrush and we are treating the right thing and it helps calm the baby.
  • I just picked up DD prescription today. I just noticed it Sunday and yesterday afternoon was the soonest I could see the pediatrician....of course the pharmacy couldn't get the medication until today. Hoping to get on top of things since it isn't a complete blow up yet.
  • Ya, the dr seems really relaxed about it. Didn't suggest I do or take anything. I asked him, and he was so casual said to just pick up some otc cream. Our symptoms are mild bur I've struggled with candida for years and know if not handled it just gets worse.

  • Anybody still struggling with thrush?
We are. DD started her meds two days ago and I just took my first dose. We saw her ped over the weekend and I finally went to see my dr this afternoon. Really hoping it clears up for she and I both really soon!
  • I'm way to stressed about it....and stress can make it worse urgh! It just sucks how it's a suffer through it till it gets better situation. I know there are way worse things to be dealing with. But thrush seems like such an unnecessary pain in the....well pain everywhere :/
And seeing baby get fussy over it is the worse part :(
  • @1mae2016 @ncm0328 @lizChesnut how are your LOs exhibiting symptoms other than the white in their mouths?

Is it weird that I put a Medela bottle underneath my non-nursing boob to catch my let down? I feel like these milky savers are so much more sleek and well designed than my current set up... Lol.
  • @babyfmama she's been abnormally fussy (for her), LOTS of spitting up which she never did prior to the past week and a half or so...that's basically all, so it was tough for me to put everything together to come to the conclusion of thrush. I thought my nipples were due to normal breastfeeding aches and pains and I thought her being unusually fussy was due to a growth spurt or something, didn't think anything of it.
  • @babyfmama I didn't think much of it. Thought maybe lo was having a growth spurt at first...Considered it might be thrush as I'm prone to candida overgrowth if I don't watch my diet,  plus I recently had antibiotics when giving birth  (gbs+) which can flare it up.
But Then I noticed He Seemed fussy and he's a really chill baby. He was also clicking and popping off the boob while feeding.
At the peds I pointed out the white on his tongue and dr. Said yup and put in the script.... :(
  • What are you ladies doing to treat thrush. I have the script for lo, nyacin. But dr. Didnt suggest anything for me. Been doing a vinegar rinse on my nipples after each feeding. Taking probiotics, back on my candida diet if you're familiar with that. But wondering if there's more I can do! And what's safe for baby!
  • They prescribed nyacin solution for LO and nyacin cream for me but that's it. No vinegar rinse or anything else.
  • Vinegar rinse is just 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup if water. After each feeding I rinse my nipples with it try and let them air dry and put on fresh milk pad. It's sortve a hassle but I don't want it to get worse

I do this too. With my first, I got cracked nipples and mastitis and this time I'm just careful to avoid infection. I put apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle and just do a little spritz after feedings, let air dry, then apply coconut oil. It's a bit time consuming, but infected nipples are dreadful.
  • I'm doing vinegar wash, 7 day monistat cream on my nipples 4 times a day, and my ob prescribed diflucan (one pill every other day for 6 days-3 pills total) and gave me a refill since she said often more than one dose is necessary just like when used for vaginal yeast infections. Baby has oral nystatin and nystatin cream for her yeast rash on her bottom and has to take/use both for 14 days.

After the coconut oil do you cover back up? Or continue to let it air dry?

I'm sure ideally, having the nipples exposed to air is best overall to prevent moisture. But I do the coconut oil and then put my nursing pads in and cover back up. They always feel better after that routine.

Cool! Think I'll start just to prevent any other infections! This mastitis sucks!
  • Okay so I'm still trying to catch righty up to lefty and I'm finding that since lefty is always ready to go I just tend to use it more. Kellymom says I can try pumping the other side every time I only use lefty to increase its supply but here's my question-how long do I do that for? A week? Two? LO is already a month old so I'm feeling like my window to get the supply up is closing (if not closed).
