The Named

Re: The Named

  • @marajay6 I'd probably go with the Quintin spelling if that's how it's spelled on your family tree. However, I've got it stuck in my head that if the name I picked is after someone/something it should be spelled that exact way. If you don't have my hang up, I prefer the Quinton spelling.

  • Quentin, but I would also pronounce that differently than Quintin.

    How would you pronounce each?

  • Okay ladies I need your honest opinions. Like I said in earlier posts my husband wanted to name our little girl Evan Elaina. I just can't get down with Evan, it's beautiful and goes with our other girls names (Deklyn and Cameron) but for some reason it's just not doing it for me. I am having the hardest time coming up with names. So the only three names I am considering are

    Brooklyn Elizabeth
Harper Mia or Harper Madelyn (both my mom and mom in law love the name Madelyn )
    Ava Alaina

    what do y'all think?

  • @marajay6 I agree with above comment. I prefer Quentin but would pronounce it Kwen-tin, versus Kwin-tin in the case of the double i spelling.

  • @seitzy3 I like Harper Madelyn the best, but they are all beautiful names!

I like Ava the best, but personally shy away from more popular names. What about Evelyn instead of Evan?
  • For a girl we are leaning towards Abigail or Jordan (no middle name decided yet) and for a boy we like Benjamin, Cruz and William. We don't find out until next week!
  • seitzy3 I worked at a summer camp with two adorable sisters who were campers, Declan and Donovan. I know different spelling, but I loved that sib set together.
  • @seitzy3 LOVE Harper Madelyn
  • @COmama87 Ugh, that's a bummer she kept bringing it up. That would bum me out.  Let's see if she just drops it or if your husband says he wants differently.

One of our top boy names is Quintin. But I have no idea how to spell it:  Quentin, Quenton, Quinton, Quintin.  How would you spell it? It is from my family tree - my ancestor spelled in Quintin, which seems to be the least common spelling.
I have a friend who spells it Quinton, everyone calls him Q. I love that name!!
  • @seitzy3 I am a big fan of the name Ava! What about Ava Madelyn? I like that combo!

  • Same as @ndelaney89 we are leaning towards William as an option. We already know we are having a boy and William is a family name on my fiancé's side. I am not in love with it but honestly am not finding anything else that I prefer.

Also in the running are Samuel and Benjamin. I like Levi but my fiancé is not on board with that one. Finding boys names that we both like and sounds good in English and French is proving difficult!

@fireflygirl12 I love the name Everly but DH is saying absolutely no. Which makes no sense since we would call a girl named Evan, Evi as a nick name. Men.

@nativetexan512  I wanted to call Cameron Delaney and have a Deklyn and Delaney. My DH is so dang picky. I thought it was adorable. But of course now I couldn't picture Cam as another name

  • It's crazy to me that when we named our daughter Eliana, no one had barely heard it before, and now I hear it everywhere I go....we also have a neighbor whose daughter is named Iliana. This the original name I pitched to my husband but he didn't like it as much

  • Our new top contender for a girl is Melia Brooke...melia is a Hawaiian word for the plumeria flower and Hawaii has always been my 2nd home....for a boy, we are still probably going with Jesse...my husband likes Cole and so do I, but it doesn't work with our last name at all

My daughter's name is Katherine, so your Catherine is obviously my top vote!  But I have always loved Olivia, too.  On my daughter's dance team of 50 girls, there are 7 Sophie/Sophia's.  Even though Catherine and Olivia may be common, I feel like Sophia is the most common.  If that's not an issue for you, no biggie!
  • @chavezrd2  I also love Catherine the best, even though they are all beautiful! Catherine is just so classic and timeless, and I don't even see it on the top 100 (Katherine with a K is #83) .....and Olivia and Sophia are in the top 3 names in U.S., so it would be nice to have a beautiful name that's not as common!

@chavezrd2 I agree, Catherine is a great name. Olivia and Sophia are beautiful, not going to lie, but just in our friend group there are 3 baby Olivias and 2 Sophias. I'm not sure if that matters to you though? If not, I think Olivia is great :)
  • Our 2nd boy will be Zachary Kevin.  Kevin is DH name.  His older brother is Austin William.
  • @chavezrd2 I love Vivian. I also like Olivia and Sophia, but there are a bunch of both in our circles.
  • My dh wants to ask why is Olivia so popular? Character or folks just like it?? So sounds like we are down to Catherine and Vivian ... Thanks ladies!!

  • @marajay6 I'm only about a month behind on this thread so I apologize for the very late, out of context, tag but I couldn't resist - because my daughter is Evelyn Della and, if she had been a boy, (we were Team Green) our top name was Quintin.   And I totally hear you on the popularity of Evelyn.  I really, really wanted a name that wasn't too popular but Evelyn just sat with me and nothing else even compared so we went with it anyway.  Ever since, each time the SSA releases their year's list of baby names by popularity, I check it hoping to see the name moving down and not up!  (So far, it has not been the case.)

  • In need of opinions / suggestions if you ladies don't mind!

Dale is DH's middle name and both of his Grandfather's first names so it will be the middle name for this child, regardless of sex (we are Team Green).  Honestly, I like it better for a girl than a boy even though I know that's not it's typical use.

Girl - Isla Dale.  Not loving how Isla is gaining in popularity and also wary of the mispronounciation/mispelling nightmare we may be subjecting our daughter to but haven't come up with anything we like better.

Boy - We have a list of options but I'd love opinions/suggestions!  Our last name is hard to pair with sometimes so I'm going to include a similar surname below so you get the idea (but, never fear...our last name is not "Hammi".)  ;)

    Silas Dale Hammi
    Miles Dale Hammi
    Levi Dale Hammi
Saulius (alternate spelling Salius) Dale Hammi

I feel like our last name doesn't pair well with one-syllable first names so I'm almost even trying to avoid names that can be shortened to one-syllable nicknames...so if we went with "Saulius" I really don't think I'd want it shortened to "Saul".

Also, this baby will be joining big sister Evelyn Della.

  • @JennM205 I love the name Isla! DH isn't crazy about it so we've moved on to other names. I had the same concerns about the mispelling/ mispronouncing. I think it will be one of those names that becomes more popular so people will start to know he correct spelling and how to pronounce it, but wont be overly popular.  Out of your boy options I really like Silas and Levi.

  • @JennM205 I like both Silas and Levi. Levi Dale has more of a country sound to me, if that matters any. I love Isla and the only reason I tossed it out of our list of names was because of my concerns with pronunciation, but I think with its rise in popularity that will fade with time as it becomes a more well known name.
  • @jenm724 I love Silas, and also like Miles.  Both sound really nice with Dale.
  • @JennM205 I like Silas the best. With Miles in a close second.

  • What do we think about the name Minerva for a girl?

    Pros
classical Greek goddess (of wisdom and war and lots of other awesome things)
the association that both my husband and I have from our colleges/prep school, or if it's too weird.
powerful full name with Minnie as a nickname when she is young

    Cons
My mother and sister aren't huge fans.
My husband isn't crazy about the nickname Minnie, but his family is weird about nicknames anyway, rarely using anything but your full name.
I recently learned that one of the characters from Harry Potter has Minerva for a first name, and I absolutely do not want people to think my daughter is named after a book I haven't read!

My husband recently suggested we add Catherine/Katherine to the mix as in either "Catherine Minerva" or "Minerva Catherine". Neither struck me at first, but maybe they are growing on me??? Ahhhhh, I don't know!
  • Ha! So before the a/s today, DH and I had settled on Jameson Edmund- Jameson was to add a spin on the family name James and Edmund for his father. I had some additional names I liked too, including Aiden, Mason, Caleb, Logan, Liam, Tristan, etc.- but DH was anti all other names. Then today we found out we're having a boy and the technician asked if we have a name, so I said "Yes, Jameson" and DH goes "well... we haven't exactly decided..." um... what? lol! Then he tells me he really likes the name Aiden! So now we're thinking Aiden Edmund. I thought of Aiden James but I don't want to end up with people calling him AJ. Who knows, DH may change his mind ten more times lol!

    Jensen

  • Forgive me if someone else has suggested this earlier, but my husband read something on Reddit that suggested both the dad and the mom create their own list of say ten names they really like. Could be less if you don't like ten. Then you swap lists and each can veto a certain number off of the list (remove half maybe?). Then you've narrowed it down to a manageable amount to pick from. I think we are going to do this for fun. Not saying that works for everyone, but when we just toss out names I never remember which we both like etc (say if we are in the car or out and can't write it down) then again we've only known the sex for two days so we haven't really done a lot of name discussing. :) either way, happy baby naming!
  • @RG1 - my favorite on that list (and a favorite name overall) is Everett, hands down. I really dislike Branson on that list but like the rest!
@SarahMConnors - I like Aiden Edmund, but I think Aiden James has a nicer sound to it. I don't think kids will choose initials unless the family starts it, I hardly knew guys' middle names growing up unless we were close friends. Also, I feel like a lot of "AJ"s are short for A-name Junior, and less so much for actual initials.
@JennM205 - My favorite of that list is Miles, I think it sounds good with Dale and the pseudo-last name, and Evelyn and Miles is just an adorable combo in my humble opinion!
