The Named

Re: The Named

  • So I've reached out to family for middle names, and the name Everett came up (my father's paternal grandfather's name).  Everett was my #1 pick for baby #1's first name, but my husband preferred Emmett (I was pretty much tied and was happy to go with Emmett instead).

So we have Emmett Martin already, and this one we are looking at Cooper Ross or Cooper Everett. I tend to like multi-syllable middle names (better for yelling when they're in trouble? lol). I don't find it odd to have one child's first name so similar to other's middle, but if people do, let me know! Up for opinions!

Edit to tag you @AnnaS930Since it's a middle name I don't think it's a big deal to use Everett. That being said, I like Cooper Ross a lot more but that's my personal preference. It has a nice ring to it
  • @mom2adoodle I appreciate that. Ross carries more significance, as it is a family surname and my father's middle name. My husband wasn't super sold on it at first but I think it's growing on him.

  • @AnnaS930 I don't think it's weird. I like Cooper Everett a little better, but like them both.

This was so funny for me to read because my second boy is named Everett Lynd. I'm a big fan of that name -- it makes me think of an old cowboy.

I think Emmett and Everett are different enough that it'd be just fine to roll with Everett for a middle name, but I'm biased.

  • So I have a little conundrum. We recently found out we are having a girl. Prior to finding out I mentioned a few girl names to DH and he didn't have much of an opinion. He recycled a few options we had listed for our first before we knew he would be a boy. Out of left field he said he really liked the name Mikah a few days after our a/s and that's the name he envisions being hers. Well he didn't know that my sister has loved the name Micah for awhile and has told me previously that she would name her next kid that. My sister is not pregnant and probably won't be anytime soon (single not dating at all). I know I need to talk to her about it, I love the name Mikah, but don't want to be the b***** that steals a name. How would you ladies approach this? Would you tell DH we need a different name or go with it and talk to person whose called dibs on a name?
  • @COmama87, in the abstract, I would say that no one owns a name and you should choose whatever you want.  However, this is the kind of thing that my own sister would go ballistic over, so I know it's not that easy.  I think that you have the right idea.  Talk to your sister, explain what happened, and hope that maybe she's changed her mind.  Or that she would love having a niece with that name, since she's not close to having a baby.
  • @Ssoccerball thanks! I am not so great with confrontation, so I dread even tiny things. It's hard to say how my sis would take it. Sometimes she flies off the handle and others its no big deal (usually she gives the opposite reaction to what I'm expecting).
  • @COmama87 Idk, names are sometimes pretty special to some. If my sister took my name I would be irate. I have two separate friends who had SILs take their names without talking to them about it and it became world war 3. I think your sister deserves at least a discussion. Of course, if your sister isn't dating anyone who knows if her SO would even like the name. But I would still talk to her about it and see what her thoughts are on your DH bringing it up.
  • @COmama87 be honest with her but bring it up in a laughing way maybe, like "you won't believe the name that SO suggested..." and see what her reaction is, you'll be able to read her sincerity it could be "you should use it, really!" Or an oh "heeeellllllllll no!" And best to respect her either way!

  • We've decided our little girl will be Eliana Nicole.
  • Thanks @AnnaS930 and @mom2adoodle. I did the jokingly way of bringing it up, she said use we should use it. I figure we've got some time to decide and make sure there won't be hurt feelings or look for a different name.
  • @JLmama118 aw that's my daughter's name (diff middle name)

  • @noelani42 do people ever have an issue pronouncing her name? I'm hoping it gets pronounced el-ee-ah-na and not el-ee-an-na. Which way is your daughter's name pronounced?
  • for what it's worth @JLmama118 -- I pronounced it your preferred way in my head when I saw it. :)
  • @JLmama118 I have never heard anyone pronounce it the second way. I think it helps that there is only one "n". We also pronounce it the 1st way. I do live in California where there is a hispanic majority, so that might contribute to people knowing the correct way to pronounce it. I HAVE had many people read it too quickly and call her Elaina.....that's happened quite a bit....

I'm also in CA. I've wondered about people calling her Elaina at first glance. I guess with any name though there will always be somebody who butchers it. She'll probably go by Ellie a lot of the time anyway.
  • @JLmama118 our daughter mostly goes by Ellie too... where in CA are you?

  • Sloane Loren (pronounced like Sophia Loren)
  • Tomorrow is the big day for us
  • We likely will go with Gianna Isabella (Gianna pronounced Gi-on-ahh). Every time I go through other choices for first name I go back to this name. I am not falling in love with any other names.
  • All this maiden name talk, I want some frank opinions on something I've been thinking about. My maiden name is Michael. It was always the plan to use it as a middle name for a boy. But since it seems we are having another girl, and will be done after this one, would it be too terribly crazy to give her the middle name Michael? I'm mostly considering it as a second middle name (even though I'm not crazy on two middle names) to appease DH. Seriously, tell me I'm crazy if you think I am, but I was so hoping to pass my maiden name on.
@camichael84 On the name front - I babysat a female Michael.   We all called her Mikki (pronounced Mickey).   On the same note, my brother is Michael, but would've been Michael either way, boy or girl.   So I say use Michael it's a great name and one that means something - can't go wrong with that.
  • @LakeR2014 Thanks! I think we are going to name her Layla Michael Rose. DH is on board now. I told him about all the positive feedback I got on here, and he told me that the more he hears it, the more it has been growing on him.

Eeeehhhh I think if you can find another name you love, it would be ideal. Nobody "owns" names, but I know what it's like to be attached to a name. My late grandma's name was Nellie, and I called dibs on it with sibling and cousins at the age of 16. If one of them had "stolen" it, I would've been heartbroken.

  • @camichael84 YAY!  I love that name and the significance.   So happy you're going to use it. :)
  • @camichael84 - aren't men hilarious? I have basically a knee-jerk reaction to a name, I instantly know if I love it or not. My husband was not sold on Cooper Ross.. then my family suggested Everett as it's another family name (they don't know the first name, just throwing out suggestions). I really liked Cooper Everett and tell my husband that and he says "I'm kind of liking Ross..." UGH, come on now. Granted - we have another 4 months to decide but I like making decisions early! Don't give me time to start liking other names then go back to the first!

  • We find out Wednesday at the a/s if we're having a boy or girl! We have agreed on a boy name- Benjamin James- and a girl first name -Vivienne-. If we find out we are having girl we'll have to discuss our middle name options further.

@AnnaS930 My DH has really shown very little interest in naming our children. His input so far has been telling me he wanted to name a son after himself (DH's nickname is Big Dave and he wanted a Little Dave). I didn't like that, so he gave it up easily. The only other input was being adamantly against Michael as a middle name for a girl. I'm so glad he has come around on that one, too. I love that he let me pick the names of our children, but it was frustrating when I was trying to decide on a girl name this time. I'd run a name by him and unless he hated it, I'd get a "yeah, that's good".

  • @camichael84 I think it's great! I might be a little biased though since I have a Layla  ;)
  • @runningisrad I talked to her about it the other night when she asked if we had come up with any names. She said to use it and then was bringing it up a couple of times this weekend in a joking manner. She can be so sarcastic at times its hard to know when she's being serious. I'm still looking for other names, but DH keeps saying that Mikah is the name he wants and is being stubborn. At least there's 4 more months til this little girl gets here and I can figure this out.
  • We're having a hard time with girl names. I really like Genevieve with nn Evie or Vivi, but it's a big no from DH. I think we have it narrowed down to Mila, Eliana, Aubrey and Eliza.
  • @jlmama118, I had the same pronunciation concerns on Eliana, but have also only heard it pronounced Ellie-ah-nuh.
  • We changed our minds from Xander to Reed.
I love Reed. I wanted it as a FN for DS2, but DH compromised to use it as a MN. We chose the Reid spelling.
  • One of our top boy names is Quintin. But I have no idea how to spell it:  Quentin, Quenton, Quinton, Quintin.  How would you spell it? It is from my family tree - my ancestor spelled in Quintin, which seems to be the least common spelling.
