How much weight so far?

I had my 21st week app last week and the doc told me that I have gained 13 lbs.  WTF!!?!?  I refuse to weigh myself anymore because I don't want to see that number on the scale.  I have always struggled, so not knowing is best for me.  Any my boobs have grown three sizes.  I am now a 40E!  Doc expects me to gain 20-25 lbs total.  I was already heavier when I started (165) so I really only wanted to gain 15.  Kinda depressed.  Anyone else care to share their stories!?!?!?

Re: How much weight so far?

  • I was about 195 starting. I lost 8-9 in the first tri. Last month I gained 7 and my doc lectured me because being heavier to start he really wants me to keep my gaining under control. But now I lost 2 lbs in the last 2 weeks. So I've only gained 5 but that means I'm still down 3-4 from my start. I'm hi risk and constantly monitored, so honestly I don't care what I gain loose as long as my bp and other vitals are good and baby continues to thrive.

  • I've given into the fact that the best I can hope for is 35 pounds. I'm at 23 weeks and have gained 17 pounds. 3 of the which was in the past week. I'm still exercising but if I eat out or anything I gain tons of weight quickly. It's been rough. Hang in there. 2 weeks before we conceived I was at my lowest ever, 118 pounds and just finished running my first half marathon.... and then when I found out I was pregnant I was 124( a week after thanksgiving and a month after my race)... and now I'm at 141 and feel like a whale... I think the weight gain is hard one everyone. I keep trying to focus on eating "clean" and how breastfeeding will help a ton... and how running and diet will get me back to a body I like. It may never be the "same" body, but something I can be proud of.
  • I gained almost exactly 30 with my first and at my 21 wk appt had gained 13.  The number on the scale is hard to see, but I was back to 10 lb over my pre-pregnancy weight by 2 months post-partum and that was just from walking (and breastfeeding)  It's hard to see but don't stress about it as long as you are taking care of yourself!  Everyone is different!

  • I don't think 13 sounds that bad and unless you were significantly overweight to begin with, gaining 15 pounds is very low. I had gained 10 at my appointment at 21 weeks which we felt was good to stay on track to gain no more than 25 total. I've been sticking with the doctor's office scale number so my next "weigh in" will be at my appointment on Friday - we'll see!
  • I am at 14lbs as of last visit at 20 weeks(now 23weeks). Haven't stepped on a scale since. I refuse to be obsessed with the weight. I gained 75lbs with my first when I was 18(a long time ago!).
  • I started out at 110, I am at 123 now at week 13. I am also only 5ft, so I feel like a whale. But I feel like if I stay under 35 lbs of gainage, I'll be a hero to myself. We are going to lose most of it quickly anyway ladies, try not to focus on that stupid scale. I don't even have one at home. Focus on how you FEEL instead. Our bodies are doing incredible, albeit exhausting, things!

  • So far, at 24w, I have gained 8lbs. Initially, OB only wanted me to gain about 15 or so but I don't know how realistic that is. With my first, I gained about 40 and she was 9+ pounds at birth. I know I can't be anywhere near that this time around but my goal is to stay under 25lbs.

  • I'm in the same boat as @midwestbaby I was a bit underweight to start due to health reasons so I'm happy with the weight I've gained now, which is 20 pounds at 23 weeks. Sometimes I worry it's too much but my OB hasn't said anything. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless your OB says something. I always thought gaining weight in pregnancy was a good thing.

I did have a dream last night though that I went to my 24 week appointment and the scale showed I had gained 53 pounds! That made me wake up in a panic.
  • I weigh myself at home every week to keep track of my actual weight, wearing just a tank top and undies. I used to have an eating disorder (I've been recovered for about 6 years) and I still get sort of upset by the number on the scale at the Midwife's office because obviously my weight is a couple of pounds higher when I'm weighed at 4 in the afternoon, fully dressed with shoes on. The weather here has been sporadic too, so I know that at my 20 week visit, I was wearing a light sundress with sandals but at 24 weeks, I had jeans, tennis shoes, plus a tank top, tee shirt, and jacket. So my "weight gain" at the midwife's office was 3.5 pounds since last visit, even though I had actually only gained 2 lbs according to the scale at home.

Gaining weight during pregnancy is hard, but having been through it once before, I can assure you first timers that, so long as you aren't severely overdoing it (read: eating a giant bowl of ice cream every night before bed, or indulging in fast food on a daily basis), the weight will come off with no problem. Especially if you breast feed!

  • I weigh myself every Friday when I start a new week. As of last Friday (24w), I was up 9lbs. I'm shocked by that. With DS, I was up by at least 15 by this time. I gained a total of 42 with DS, and he was 9lbs 10oz at birth. While I lost 50 pounds PP, I put on 10 after weaning at a year. I started this pregnancy 12 pounds heavier than my last. I hope to not gain 42 this time, but I'm not worried about it. My OB will tell me if she's concerned. She didn't bat an eye at my gaining 42 last time. I'm 5'9" and she told me everyone carries and gains differently.

  • I'm 21 weeks last week when I went to the doctor is gained 5pounds... Doctor said everything is going well and since I'm 4"11 I'm going be all baby weight.
  • I've gained about 8 lbs at 24w.  With DD I had only gained maybe a lb or two by this point, so when I saw 8 at my dr appt last week I was like WHAT?!?  But then with DD I gained 43 total in the final 15 weeks.....not good.  It was all water retention, so it wasn't really anything I was doing, but still.  I'm hoping that my weight gain this time is more steady and healthy, and my BP doesn't go nuts.  Last week it was 90/60 - woo hoo!!!

This isn't true for everyone.  My weight gain with DD was all water retention, I lost it all 11 days pp.  However, once my milk came in on day 10, I stopped losing and my body held onto every calorie I ate.  I gained 30 lbs while breastfeeding, and that was real weight, and no matter what I did I couldn't lose it until I stopped BFing.

I would just say do you, be healthy, indulge when you want, and it's up to each of us individually do do what's best for us.  For me, BFing was important, so the weight loss had to wait.  What will be will be.

Seeing as many of us probably found out we were pregnant just after or around Thanksgiving,  I was wondering if anybody else is sort of on the fence with what their "prepregnancy" weight was?  I had picked up 4 pounds over the holiday which I am normally able to drop most of before Christmas, but this time it didn't go away! Maybe less exercise with morning sickness or pregnancy hormones. I'm a normal bmi so my doc said anything between 25 and 35 pounds is fine, but I would rather be on the lower end of that (especially because I'm AMA already and if we have more children they will be very close in age.)

Anyway,  my weight had evened out to 11 pounds by about weeks 16 - 21 including the extra 4 (Thanksgiving) pounds.  Which I was okay with,  but then over the past 2 weeks my weight shot up 5 pounds. Anybody else having weeks of plateau followed by rapidly increasing weight??

Edited because simple math is difficult today!

With DD, my OB only wanted me to gain 15 lbs, too.  I laughed in her face when she said that.  I ended up with a 10 lbs baby, so that only left me 5 lbs of "other" weight gain.  I have to imagine that my placenta accounted for a lot of that, and then add water retention....I gained 43 lbs and was back to my pp weight 11 days after birth.  This time I didn't even ask my new OB, but I did tell her I thought my old one was a cracker jack for telling me to only gain 15 lbs lol, and I started both pregnancies right around the same weight.  She told me 25-30 would be fine, but I didn't respond to that and haven't brought it up since.

  • I'm 25 weeks and have gained 10 pounds as of this morning. I'm about in the same boat as you @jengle77.... Started at 168 and was hoping to keep total gain to 15 pounds. I constantly have to remind myself that my doctor is not worried and said up to 25 pounds is still healthy for me and Lil' Turbo... And that's what I need to be concerned about. I can deal with the few extra pounds later.

@nikkoli98 - yes! I'll gain nothing for weeks, then gain 2-3 pounds, then plateau again. I feel like my bump grows that way too. No changes for a while and then I wake up one morning and wham! Noticeably bigger.
  • @1faceinacrowd I weigh in right after dinner with clothes on. I try and weigh myself weekly to keep myself in check. In the beginning I didn't weigh at all and then gained 10 pounds in 3 weeks, so I need to monitor myself for my own sanity.
  • I started out at 130 lbs when I found out about the pregnancy...fast forward to today, right at 26 weeks, I've gained 23 lbs since then! I'm also 5'9. I know this weight gain is not done as I have few more months left but I've gotten over the initial shock of "holy shit, I weigh how much now?!"

Doc didn't seem to worry at all so I'm not going to stress about it. I'm not eating way more than I used to. Just focusing on carrying to term and delivering a healthy baby.
  • I'm 24 weeks and a healthy weight and I have gained 10 lbs.  My last pregnancy I only gained 20 lbs but I know I'm a bit ahead this time around.  I think I will gain about 25 lbs this go round!

I am about the exact same as you, 5'9 and have gained 21 lbs and will be 23 weeks. My doctor has said it was a healthy weight gain.

  • @alikay20 -  I'm under 5'4" and I've also gained about 20lbs (I'm 23w tomorrow).  I probably overdid it at the holidays but honestly I'm not too worried at this point.  My boobs are a million times heavier than they were pre-preg (post-nursing DS) and otherwise I'm carrying entirely in my belly.  My OB hasn't said anything about my weight but the nurse who gives me my Makkena shots said something this morning when she asked what my weight was at my appt.

I gained 35lbs with DS and he was born at 36w, so basically I'm gaining about the same as last time.  I was able to knock all that off and more between nursing and a couple of clean eating/21 day fix diets and exercise.  I'm not worried!

I've gained right around 20lbs, but ten of it was last month when I was on bed rest. My doctor said that is fairly normal, as long as that pattern doesn't continue now I am cleared for working out again! I was also a little heavier than normal prior to pregnancy, but in my case it was a heavy dose of steroids (for three months!), trying to get healthy enough I could go off all my medications for at least the oh so important first trimester. I did manage to stay off them, and the developmental ramifications of the meds he avoided. The only real risk from starting them up again now is pre-term labor, so we need to be a bit more vigilant than normal about it. It's not a significantly increased risk, so the trade off is worth it.

So between the steroids, and pregnancy I am up about 35 lbs over what my "normal" weight is. Blech. Oh well, this little guy was *very* wanted, and given my health condition I am so thankful we were able to get that small window of "okay to TTC."

I'll trade skinny jeans for mom jeans to actually be a mom!

  • I actually had just finished doing a full cycle of p90x3 and was working on the 21 day fix extreme when I found out I was pregnant. I actually think because I lost about 15 lbs at that point I was in some of the best shape I had been in a long time. My starting weight was around 152 lbs and up until week 14 I was down to 148. I use the 148 as the number I go off of. As of my appt yesterday I was at 164. Im actually happy with the 16 lbs, as I am expecting twins. Right now I'm about what I was at before I lost weight. My doctor said I'm kind of on the low end of the spectrum for weight with twins and she said she'd be surprised if I'm over the recommended 35 pounds (low end). I eat all of the time and do yoga and I feel pretty good. I try not to concentrate on the number because I know I need to gain for them to be healthy. At my appt yesterday both babies were 1lb, so I'm pretty happy.

  • I'm eating pretty healthy, walking every day, and still putting on more weight than I'd like.  I attempted to go for a run a couple weeks ago (I ran pre-first-trimester), and it was so awful and I promptly came down with a head cold for a week that I resigned myself to brisk walks. I'm just doing my best, and if the doctor isn't concerned, then apparently this is just what my body does pregnant.  And I'll just keep repeating that.
  • I don't know my weight gain, no scale at home. I have an appointment Monday and will find out then. With my first I probably gained about 20, my belly was HUGE and it looked like more weight. This time I'm trying to walk regularly like with the first and focus on putting good food in me. I think as long as you're conscious of your eating habits that is what matters. Try not to be too hard on yourself, but make smart choices.
  • Exactly @Bookhousegirl @texasmama2014 !!

I know it's hard not to feel bad when you see or read about other pregnant moms but we really are all different. I wanted to run throughout my pregnancy (I would run a mile or two 3x/week pre-pregnancy). But I had to listen to my body when I went running during my first trimester and started spotting every time I tried.

The guilt and fear of not being able to run really took a toll on me in the beginning but I had to get over it and change my negatice thoughts to positive, listening to my body. Now when I see pregnant ladies running outside or read about how they went for a run, I don't feel bad that I can't as much as I used to because at the end, the thing that matters most is your health and the health of your baby. :)
  • @AliKay20 Your body is doing amazing things right now.  Listening to your body is the smartest thing you can do.
  • You all are making me look bad! I'm 24 weeks and I've gain at least 20 lbs already. I'm up to 170!

  • Im 25 weeks today and have gained 1 pound so far. I started out too heavy so dr put my total weight gain goal at no more than 10 pds. I had gd with my 21 mo old. even tho I gained less weight than they told me to and it was managed with diet, he still ended up in continuous care unit because his glucose was too low . I'm trying my best to avoid that if I can this time . I don't worry about what the scale says I don't even look, I just have them tell me how much I gain or lose at each appt. I eat what I want within reason and watch portion sizes ,chase my 21 mo old around and walk the dogs more.  Think if ur dr is pleased with where your weight is at that's what's most important because they do it for the health of you and the baby.
  • I truly believe that everyones bodies are different. I was overweight to begin with. I fluctuated between 202-212. The day I found out I was pregnant I weight 212. I hit 23 Wks yesterday and I weighed 213.8.  I lost 11 lbs in my 1st trimester. My OB said that my metabolism and eating habits have changed which is why I have had a steady gain. My goad is only to gain 25 lbs throughout the whole pregnancy. I am right on track for that. But I know I have a tendency to swell and that will add lbs in the last few weeks.
34 Mother of 4 year old and 2 Labs. Happily Married to my Hubs of 6 years.
  • I started at around 130 and have gained about 20lbs so far. I was very worried that I was gaining weight too quickly, but my doctor is not concerned and said I still have a healthy BMI. This has been difficult for me at times because I was a gymnast until I graduated from high school and actually lost weight in college due to walking everywhere in a hilly/mountainous area. I gained a little bit of weight since college/getting married and despite trying to lose I never did so I have to remind myself that my doctor is not worried and that this is what the baby needs right now. I think it's important to have positive people you can talk to about it if you are feeling discouraged (my hubby and mom have been very good at keeping me grounded).
  • at 22 weeks I had gained 10 lbs which is so much more than with my first son, but my midwife said i'm right on track. I know i'm much bigger this time around, my belly has popped and I started out a bit heavier than with my first pregnancy. overall last pregnancy I gained 35 lbs. i'm hoping to gain about the same this pregnancy.

I do feel like I gained a lot before my last appt and I'm not growing as much these past couple of week so maybe I won't have a big gain. we'll see. I have a hard time seeing my body change and the scale go up but at the end of the day as long as baby is healthy and the midwife doesn't have an issue, then i'll just be okay.

I continue to work out and move and my body will do what it needs to do.
  • I lost 20 pounds my first trimester and have gained 4 back. I am 24w6d. My OB actually kind of got on to me for gaining those 4 lbs back and I'll tell you one thing is for sure, it was way easier to eat healthier when I wasn't thinking about my weight as much as I was focusing on my health. I'm not skinny by any means, but I'm not incredibly overweight either. Now that my focus is on weight gain, I feel like its so much more stressful and I'm thinking about it constantly.  :(

I started around 148 also! I had spent the time after my boys loosing around 40lbs! So 148 was amazing shape from what I had been at the start of my last pregnancies! In a weight lifter and now that's a restriction. So I do A LOT of walking! I went in yesterday and was at 161. It's difficult mentally to see that number climb so I'm constantly reminding myself it's a beautiful thing! I can't complain with 13lbs with twins. Fraternal so each their own placentas and sacs etc. Baby A was 1lb 3oz and Baby B was 1lb 2oz! Nice and healthy girls!
