@shadykady many of us have previous losses, hx of infertility, or have had concerning symptoms (eg. Bleeding). My first shouldn't have been til 12 weeks, but I had bleeding and cramping so I got multiple early ultrasounds to track a subchorionic hemorrhage.
@shadykady My first pregnancy with my first OB wouldn't do it a 6 weeks, when they let me schedule my first appointment, but let me get one a week later. This time, with a new OB group, they didn't have me POAS, but immediately did an ultrasound at my first appointment, which they were happy to schedule between 6-8 weeks (they might have pushed for 8 weeks if I didn't have a previous loss). You may try calling around if you don't have any good reason to stick with your current OB and you really want one.
@shadykady - I also think it depends on your doc/midwife/OB. Mine current doc usually has the first appt between 8 and 10 weeks and does one then. It's late enough that you don't get as much confusion, it's a fine time to do a growth ultrasound to get a realistic due date, and it's early enough that you can talk through testing options and still have the time to make those appointments.
@shadykady I have a history of losses and have been working with an RE. Mine does weekly checks until releasing to regular OB. Honestly as frustrating as the wait is, these early ones often cause more stress/anxiety than anything, particularly if you have irregular cycles and didn't track ovulation. You could go at what you think is 6 weeks and really be 4 and see nothing and stress for a week or more for a confirmation scan. I think 8 weeks would probably be the ideal for first scan if I had to choose.
I've just been hardcore lurking on this page...I went a little over 5 weeks in and to my surprise my doc pulled out the U/S cart. He's pretty awesome so when I said, "Isn't it too early?" His response was, "yeah, probably but we might be able to see something and I know you want to." Unfortunately we didn't see anything at all. Now I have to wait until May 5th for the my next appointment. So these pics are keeping me going until I can stare at my own little one. Congrats ladies!
I had my u/s today!!! Measuring 1 day behind (7w3d) but we aren't worried because we aren't sure exactly when I ovulated. What do you all think? Boy or girl? It was transvaginal.
@Blondesweety444..I'm sure you're kidding about the boy/girl because it's so early but beware with posting u/s pics here asking for guesses on the sex. People tend to go slightly bananas about it.

That is one sweet little squiggle though!
Sorry I should have been more specific. I was thinking more of the Ramzi theory...but I have no idea how that works! So I could be crazy.... I'll blame it on the pregnancy brain!
@Blondesweety444 the Ramzi method only works on very specifically oriented ultrasound as per the dude who invented it. Unless your ultrasound happens to be taken on exactly the proper plane, it's about as accurate as any other old wives tale - 50/50
Sorry if it's huge, I'm mobile bumping. Measuring 6w-ish pushing my due date to the end of November, but she found a heartbeat right away. My sister said my uterus looks "staticy". Hoping for a clearer pic at my next ultrasound in 4 weeks!
My blurry little jelly bean! Measuring small but she said that's because she couldn't get a clear pic with my full bladder that the assistant forgot to tell me to empty... Whoops! Love seeing that heartbeat!
Had my second u/s with the twins and they're growing great! Both were measuring 9w and had 170HR. This is starting to feel real now that they're actually visible on the u/s
Ended up with an emergency ultrasound today after a stabbing pain in one side for about 3-4 days so wanted to make sure everything was alright. Baby H is healthy and measuring exactly on time at 10 weeks 3 days! And had a HB of 172! Still not sure what the pain is (checked ovaries while I was there so now keeping an eye on my appendix) but the main thing is baby H is healthy! Also excited as my first ultrasound wasn't scheduled until June. Not the circumstances we wanted one but it felt amazing to see the baby.
You ladies that got ER ultrasounds are so lucky. I got mine done at the ER about a week ago and they wouldn't even let me see my little blob, I was very upset.
I've had two losses and I have a 10 month old, and it's still standard to wait until 12 weeks. My OB is great, so no switching just to get an early u/s. Was just curious.
@shadykady I don't know about the other ladies here, but I see a fertility specialist. So along with my losses and PCOS, it's standard in my office to have 6 week ultrasound with a two week follow up. My OB won't see me until 10-12 weeks.
& They have the 3D machines

I just called and they said my first appointment will be more like a consultation. I will be 8 weeks. The lady said they normally dont do an ultrasound until about 20 weeks!? Has this happened with anyone else? I wanna see my peanut!

That's pretty typical. That is how my office does it, but I have had a loss and spotting so that is why I have had early u/s.
@samanthaj7 i think you should be able to have your first trimester scanning if you want to. You can opt out but normally they need to do the NT scan between 11-14 weeks. When i called my OB, they said they want to see me between 8-10 weeks first and they scheduled an u/s right ahead. I do not have any history of loss, it is their regular procedure.
@samanthaj7 My 8 week was also just a medical history, consultation, manual cervical exam. They did, however, check for a heartbeat with the doppler (didn't hear anything, but that's normal at 8w). My office does the first u/s at 12 weeks, which is 2 weeks away for me, and the waiting is BRUTAL, so I feel your pain! You can try calling your insurance company and seeing what they cover. You might be able to request an earlier ultrasound if it's covered, but I think they usually only do ultrasounds earlier than 12 weeks if there is a history of issues, or other concerns.

Today our baby measured at 7w3d, 1.3cm and HR 150! So much progress! (Last week was HR 117.) They 'graduated' us to the regular OB's office so no more ultrasounds for us for a couple weeks.
It was finally my turn!! We had our first ultrasound today and the little bean is measuring right on track at 10.5 weeks! I thought I was only 9.5 weeks based on my average cycle length, but this is one time I am happy to be wrong - it means I'm closer to being done with the 1st trimester! HB was 162 and everything looks great!
