Also for anyone who can't get full and just wants to feel like they're eating indulgent food, I eat a ton of cheese when I feel that way. Cheese has no carbs. I bought like 4 different kinds. Last night I ate cheddar Jack slices and it was delicious. Then again I'm not sure if any of you are as obsessed with cheese as I am
Yes to all the cheese. Cheese and almonds arw a go-to snack because they fill me up. And there are so many kinds of cheeses, that you can just switch it up and it doesn't get boring.
So I went to the Dr. Yesterday and she told me that she's not at all concerned with me losing weight (I'm down about 3 lbs since the start of GB dieting) -- unless I drop like, 20-30 lbs because I'm starving myself (Full disclosure, I'm a bigger girl. My pregnancy starting weight was 208, and I'm currently weighing in around 218-219.)
@wbwells I met with my nutritionist on the day I was diagnosed. She said to limit carbs to basically, 20 at breakfast, 45 for two snacks and 60 for lunch and dinner. Carbs are important because basically your body is going to convert any kind of carb to sugar. I miss sweets and bread and pasta and rice and pizza and gluteny goodness (and also, not being a slave to my meal schedule) but my nutritionist pointed out that my highest priority right now needs to be taking care of myself so that I can take care of baby. I get tugged around a lot at work from meeting to meeting, and often end up eating at bizarre, irregular, intervals (and often something I can race through a drive through to pick up and bring back to my desk, or get at the snack shop upstairs) or even skipping meals entirely.
The bottom line was, that's bad for me and it's bad for baby. So changing up what you eat (packing a healthy lunch and snacks, or eating actual food for breakfast instead of a cup of coffee on your mad dash out the door) may take extra discipline, but in the long run -- shouldn't that be your highest priority right now?
I do know that it is my highest priority now. I should've mentioned we live in Kuwait not America. Where the main protein source is tofu and soy. Which messes with my hormones and GI tract so much. And fruits and veggies that I've tried to like but physically make me sick. They don't sell Greek yogurt here and if I can manage to find it- it's $5usd for an individual serving cup. So I am willing to change my diet. I also don't work and this is baby #1 so I can sit around and cook all day etc. but I've already been warned they'll try and cut all beef out and make my protein come from beans, chicken and tofu. So it'll be a balancing act.
I also have have a small background in nutrition and know 1500 calories will put me in starvation mode so we'll see what happens next week.
I'm sorry @wbwells. The frustrating situation of GD sounds even more frustrating for your situation. Hopefully you can find a healthy balance and that the next couple of weeks will fly by!
I agree with cheese cheese and more cheese!! I love cheese and it makes me happy. Plus it's a great source of calcium, which our babies are stealing from us as quick as they can! I plan on having a snack afternoon of cheese and sausage (I'm not warming the sausage either. Yuck. I was told summer sausage has so much sodium in it that listeria can't really grow there so that's what I'm going with) and I'm actually excited to eat that. I like finding things that I look forward to.
Almost wish that they would do the same thing for GD that they do for people who are dieting. Like the Jenny Craig diet where they just bring all your meals to the door and tell you what to eat. The meals would have all he calories, fat, protein, carbs that pregnant women with GD need.
@shannonrnbsn No, she didn't say I had to watch it, but it's kind of freaking me out to see like, 36%-40% of my daily intake as fat. I guess it's the chicken salad I'm packing in my lunches that Is killing me. And the peanut butter. And she did tell me that avocados are "free" foods. But for some reason I can't ever seem to hit my protein goal. I'm eating an egg at breakfast, greek yogurt for a snack, chicken salad at lunch, whole wheat peanut butter crackers for a snack, and last night I had crockpot pot roast with carrots for crying out loud! I just don't see how I can eat *more* protein. bleh.
@Boonhilde I want cookies, too. ;.; My hubs bought a WHOLE TUB of chocolate chip cookies last week and ate them all himself. o.o In front of me. I love him, but he's pushing the limits here... :P
@wbwells Blech! That does put a different spin on things. On the up side, no one (including my nutritionist) has told me I can't have beef.
Also, ARGH, you guys! I measured 125 after lunch today. I literally ate the same freaking chicken salad wrap (on a carb smart tortilla) I've eaten every day for the past two weeks and a 1/4 cup 100 calorie container of applesauce. WTF!?
@shannonrnbsn - thank you for the pizza crust suggestion! We're also going to attempt cauliflower crust pizza I just REALLY like so bad for you, tasty pizza, but I can wait another 11 weeks for that. I was certainly in a mood yesterday as well.
I'm glad to hear cheese is such a go to snack! I definitely love cheese!

Was your water consumption different? I've had the same breakfast every day this week (literally the same. Thank you room service) and my numbers have been different. Biggest thing I've noticed- less water means higher numbers for me. More water is lower numbers.
It's possible. I usually keep a waterbottle on my desk, but today I just got pulled from place to place too fast to keep it full. So many variables to track! My after lunch readings are consistently the worst. Is anyone else seeing that same trend?
Anyone else getting lightheaded and nauseous? Especially at night? Even though numbers are pretty normal?
YAS. I haven't tried it yet, but my nutritionist said that if I'm waking up at 3:00 to pee anyway, a small carb - light snack wouldn't hurt and might even help keep my "fasting" numbers lower by discouraging my liver to push out sugar.
I think I need to set a timer and wake up at the same time every day to test. My fasting numbers have been weird but I wonder if it is because of the days that I sleep in longer and therefore have gone longer without food. Maybe? I honestly cant find a reason for a lot of the number variables, but I figure I might as well try something different. Planning on trying a 6am wake up call, test, potty break, and a snack after taking my number and then go back to sleep.
Anyone else getting lightheaded and nauseous? Especially at night? Even though numbers are pretty normal?
I had this tonight about 3 hours after eating dinner...although dinner was smoked chicken wings as we were out all day and I didn't really know what to get... I'm excited to have my class on Tuesday and learn more about what I should be doing!
Just popping in to share a recipe. Made this a few times last summer and I just made it again and forgot how good it was. The lime juice seems to keep the avocado from browning too much (so it saves well).
Hi ladies!! Wondering how every one is doing this week!!
I'm two straight weeks in on the GD diet and I feel like it is getting less stressful in a lot of ways. I have definitely learned how carb heavy my previous diet was. I'm actually shocked some times when I got to look up values of things as I would normally eat them to learn they are like 85grams of carbs for something that was a regular indulgence for me. (I was brave and skipped the sushi like many of you recommended. But I can't say I didn't have a few moments of tearfulness and self pity about it).
Some things that are cool for me with this diet:
1) I'm eating stuff I normally never would have considered ordering or getting. And it is always delicious, much to my chagrin.
2) My weight gain has finally stabilized instead of blowing up like it had been the whole rest of the pregnancy. I think if it hadn't been for the diet slowing my roll I would have easily put on another 15-25lbs this pregnancy, on top of the 25 I've gained. I know in the long run that wouldn't have been good for me or baby.
3) My regular eating pattern was dumb. I would skip so many meals and I knew it wasn't good for my body but I didn't realize just how not good it was. I didn't really understand how carbs work, what the body does if you don't fuel it, etc. I had a lot of bad habits.
4) I realize that waking up at rando times affects my blood sugar so I have started setting the alarm for 6am, test, and eat a quick snack. Then if I have time I go back to sleep. This has kept my morning blood sugars in better check and starts my day off in a better routine.
5) I have no more heart burn. And I had SHOCKING heart burn for WEEKS that I thought I would suffer with the remainder of the pregnancy. The change in diet meant that, for me, the heartburn is gone.
6) Since having my gallbladder removing 10 years ago, my intestines have hated me. But now that I am eating healthier and regularly, my other systems are more regular as well. Which I appreciate sooooo much.
While I miss just being able to mindlessly eat, I am actually happy right now with how healthy my body feels despite being almost 29 weeks pregnant. The diagnosis still sucks and scares me, but there have definitely been some silver linings in my case.
June2016BabyW- aw, that was a great post to read. sounds like you're having a good week! I'm going for my class tomorrow afternoon. Sounds like I'm going to learn A LOT.
@June2016BabyW thank you for the positive post!! Ive been feeling so negative about being diagnosed with gestational diabetes but you are so right: my heartburn is nearly nonexistent and ive actually lost 3 lbs (which is good for me, fine for babies). Im doing a lot better not skipping meals too.
Im still struggling with my fasting numbers. Im up to 10 units of insulin at 10pm each night, but it seems like every time they increase my insulin, my fasting sugars go up. So confusing. Hopefully this week it will even out and get down into the 80s.
Also (not to be gross) but if anyone else is dealing with serious constipation since starting the gestational diabetes diet, my nutritionist said its the increase in cheese so ive had to cut it out of my diet and have been eating a lot of nuts instead. Its seemed to help. Just a heads up in case anyone else is dealing with this.
Hope everyone is doing okay. And thanks again for the positive check in post! It is much appreciated!
I am SO proud of you @June2016BabyW!!!!! So so proud! I agree, it really does get easier. And I cannot stress enough the physical change that I feel. Before, I would feel awful and tired after eating. Now I feel like I'm tired before I eat and energized afterwards. I'm still (8 months pregnant) exhausted, but not with the swings from before. I haven't had any trouble with constipation, but agree with @chesterdoodle that the cheese is a gut killer. I've been eating enough lettuce/vegetables that I could eat a pound of cheese a day and be fine. And frankly, I'm only truly sick of the lettuce. I'm fine if it's in something but I will shank someone if I eat another salad. We can do this ladies!!!
@shannonrnbsn seriously, the amount of salads I've been ingesting is ridiculous. I'm more concerned about listeria than I have been in forever.
Extra score: my body is starting to not crave sugar as much and when I do eat a lot of sugar my body reacts quickly to it. I had three mini twix as a snack and I could feel my heart racing and I got shakey feeling. It feels like my sensitivity to sugar has gone back up. I also measured out a 1/4 of a cup of jelly beans the other day and I thought "what a shitty amount" that I quickly came to realize was a HUGE amount and I couldn't finish without sharing. This gets me excited that hopefully many of these habits will stay around and I will not eventually be one of the 50% of women who are diagnosed with GD that become diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes later in life. I want to be a fit and healthy momma!!
@chesterdoodle I hope they get things leveled out for you. The fasting glucose level sucks the most when it is out of whack because it feels like the only one you have no real control over. Usually with the other ones you could at least say "I'll try a different meal next time, drink more water, walk after, etc" but with fasting you are kinda stuck. Keep us updated on how the insulin is doing to help!
I've noticed some positives, too. I'm lost about 5 pounds overall in the last two weeks, but Dr. seems OK with it, so I am too. I'm week 29 and I had really only gained about 13 pounds this pregnancy at my heaviest. So now I'm down to 8 pounds gained over my pre-pregnancy weight. I might actually weigh less after I have baby than I did before o.o.
I'm eating a LOT less sugar. I guess with the pregnancy I had kind of slipped into the idea that I could eat whatever and it would be fine. :P I used it as my excuse to eat all kinds of unhealthy stuff that I would NEVER have eaten un-pregnant, so while, yeah, I am 100% relating to @shannonrnbsn 's salad-related homicidal tendencies, I definitely know that what I'm eating is better for me than what I was eating before.
I've also noticed that we're spending WAY less money on food. We're packing both our lunches instead of eating lunch out on the regular. And I'm less likely to lazily avoid cooking dinner when I know I have a fridge full of perishables that are going to spoil before the end of the week.
I do have a question for you all though. I have a shower coming up next weekend. What did/are you all doing about cake?
I've mainly skipped cake but it's pretty easy for me since I'm not a huge cake fan typically any way. (Ugh, give me a cookie cake with icing on top and I will destroy it immediately. Yum!) At this point I think I would have some sugar shock from it. I'm also avoiding stuff I can't easily look up nutritional value.
If you are dead set on eating cake though, a small slice probably wouldn't hurt, balance it out with protein and fiber, and drink lots of water. Worst case scenario-you have one higher reading and you know the exact cause of it and know that it was a rare occasion.

Wait what? 50% of women developed type 2? I had read it was more like 25%?

Doc gave the okay for cake for special occasions. This week is BOMB.COM because I had a work birthday party (yesterday), family birthday party (my birthday is Saturday) and my work baby shower tomorrow. Bring on all the cake!!!! My numbers still reflect good because I'm balancing it by not eating additional snacks and eating lower carbs at meals (more protein/veggies).
@CourtJack yeah, that was one of the scary statistics they gave me at the dietician. "50% of women with GD will develop Type II within 5-10 years." Obviously the risk is higher for women who are at a higher weight not pregnant which is why I am hoping to keep the motivation going post pregnancy and get fit!!
Waiting for class to start. The nurse told me I failed the second blood draw only-and by .4. I was under for the fasting draw and the third draw. Sigh. I guess that's neither here nor there now but it was a little sad.
You just freaked me out, so I went out googling Looks like a lot of websites say you are 20-50% more likely to develop type II within 5-10 years that a woman not diagnosed with GD.

The only way to help combat that is to be in the best shape of your life after pregnancy and keep your BMI down. Motivation.

So today was the first day of tracking my blood sugar and this may be a silly question but I'm a little confused and wondering if this is normal if you don't mind giving me some feedback! My numbers were: Fasting: 92 1 hr. after breakfast: 130 1 hr. after lunch: 111 1 hr. after dinner: 83 I was especially thrown off by the 83 an hour after dinner, I didn't have a ton of carbs so maybe that explains it? I just didn't know if they're always all over the place/if that's okay since they're all in range (even though the fasting and after breakfast were just barely in range).
Mine are usually pretty all over the place and even if I eat the exact same thing same time etc the numbers vary. I was told as long as you were under your targets it is fine. And my place wants to know 7 day average for all readings and wants that number to be under 110. So when I send them my numbers weekly they just keep sending back "looks great and your average is under the total. Talk to you in a week." Even when I've had some "higher" numbers my average has been around 95.
The 83 after dinner probably is because you didn't have many carbs. Make sure to space your carbs out through the day and get enough in. I also have a snack before bedtime to keep my fasting level semi OK.

Alright - so when I measure my blood sugar, my fasting level needs to be under 5.3 and my 1 hour after meals needs to be less than 7.8. I don't know what this means when I look at all your numbers?!?!?! Stupid Canadian diabetes.
@CourtJack I looked at a conversion chart and your goals looks very similar to the ones I was given (95 fasting, and 140 1hour after meals). I didn't even think about the measurements being different, but it makes sense.
@alysemciver sorry you are struggling woth the fasting numbers too. Its so frustrating. are you on insulin too? If so for how long/ how many units?
Hi sorry I'm mobile so I never see responses unless I happen across them. I take it with a syringe because my insurance doesn't cover the pen. I measure it up to 1.5 in the morning so it will hit me most at night and 1 at night for the next morning. It's a slow acting one. I'm out and don't have it with me or I'd give you the name. Humalog maybe?
