Re: Gestational Diabetics Check-In

  • I was super angry about food today. Got an IHOP omelet finally. Just so damn mad some days.

Be careful with IHOP omlettes.  Not sure if they do it anymore but they used to put some pancake batter into them to make them fluffier.

  • So I have my course next week. So so I get to be in denial till then? :-)

Also at my apt today, I was told that the limit was 10.5 and I tested 10.9. What do these numbers mean? No idea. And I'm an idiot and didn't even ask because I was so taken aback.

They still do.  And they can't make them without it.  Hubby has a good friend who is the manager of one.

:( I didn't know they couldn't make them without it. I just remember in my "how to not make your intestines explode when you go out to eat with celiac disease" info, they mentioned that a lot of diners and IHOP in particular puts pancake batter in their omlettes but that was a few years ago so I wasn't sure.  Because logically you want that in your otherwise healthy, low carb breakfast option....

Our friend has said that if you can't eat gluten, don't eat there because it's in just about everything.

Oh yeah, any place that has a majority of their food options gluten based is out for me.  I just remember how surprised I was when I found out many omlettes in restaurants have pancake batter in them!  It never would have crossed my mind to even ask about it and for people watching carbs etc, it could be a real pain in the butt.

***and now back to your regularly scheduled amazing GD support!****
  • Apparently some IHOPs will make it without, all you have to do is ask for it straight from the egg and tell them you can't have the gluten. Although, even if they go straight from the egg and skip the pancake batter, they make it in a contaminated kitchen. Many places that say they are GF friendly don't actually have dedicated work stations and tools for GF food and cross contamination happens a lot.
  • I started nightly insulin shots on friday to help with my fasting glucose levels, which are just anove normal levels. However i hate needles so much. Each time i have to inject myself i want to vomit. My insurance covers needles but my doctor mentioned i can try to get special approval from my insurance for pens instead.

anyone using insulin pens now? If so what do you think? Do you find them easy to use/ less scary?

Thanks in advance for any responses!
  • @chesterdoodle no experience on the insulin but cab I ask what your fasting glucose levels typically are? My morning one this morning was 96 but I can't figure out why and it isn't much above the recommended level and I am hoping it doesn't trend that way. But wondering what yours averaged to be for them to recommend insulin.
  • @June2016BabyW my fasting numbers are in the 90s to 110. Average was probably around 100 when they started me on insulin. They want my fasting numbers in the 80s. My after meal numbers are in the same range as my fasting levels so they said its simply the placentas causes issues (im having twins). Nothing diet or exercise can do. Its definitely frustrating.

I'm a nurse. The pens are FANTASTIC because it takes the error out of drawing the medicine, you simply dial the dosage and press it into your arm/belly and push the button. The needle is a very fine gauge, like 29-33 I think. So it's a much easier option than syringes.

This is true. The placental hormones are highest in the morning. You're probably on insulin because of the twins. My fasting is 80-high 90s and my office is satisfied with that.
  • Damn it. I just want to go through a drive thru that is not Panera.
I had an apple pecan chicken salad from Wendy's last night and good readings :)
  • My fasting level yesterday was 96 and today was 99. Again, just hoping it is a fluke and not a trend.
  • Did you guys have to take a three hour class? did you get given a calorie level to meet? sorry for all the newbie questions.

I also want us all to get Diabetus shirts. Yes? Best idea ever?

  • So I got diagnosed, met with my OB and an endocrinologist last Saturday, and then left the country Sunday for a work trip/vacation.  Endo told me to monitor my fasting number, and then 1 hour after b/l/d and see where we go. He gave me my goals- morning fasting under 5.0 (90), 1 hr after each meal under 7 (126).  so far the only 2 times I have failed a meal number, is when I had either coke (12 ounces) or chocolate (a giant kit kat bar.  whoops)  but with being on room service my breakfasts have been the same every day, so easy for a control to see it's the sugars specifically not the carbs (maybe that's common GD info? and i just didn't know it?)  however, I can't get my morning fasting number under 5.4, unless I sleep for 13 hours, or unless I workout on an empty stomach.  I don't want to go on insulin shots, but obviously my fasting number is high, so it needs to be controlled.

I'm dreading meeting with the nutritionist when we get back because she's supposedly giving me a specific, strict 10 day meal plan to follow, and we'll measure my numbers on that, but I guess I question why, if I've shown myself that the crap sugars are the only things that screw up my meal numbers and morning is my only issue, do I have to completely change my diet for the next 10 days, especially considering I've been told she doesn't take calories into account, she just gives you a blanket diet of approx 1500 calories.  Before baby I was eating 2200 and losing weight, I'm eating about 1900 and putting on the appropriate amount, I'm terrified of cutting to 1500 calories.

Sorry for the rant, I know I shouldn't be complaining especially with only half of the info regarding my diet, but I really am glad for the support and the info from others on this page that we can all talk about it without judgmental comments :)
  • wbwells 1500 seems low. That's what I was eating when I was trying to lose weight.

  • @wbwells 1500 also seems low compared to what I was told,  but I don't have a specific calorie goal to meet.  My doctor told me it is more important to get the nutrition I need and need to go on insulin than to deprive myself of calories/nutrients.

I'm not on insulin, but my understanding is that sometimes it is needed to control just those fasting numbers.

Good luck figuring things out, and enjoy your travels!
  • @CourtJack yes, I had a 3 hour class with a dietician and nurse to talk about the glucometer, general GD, and nutrition. Then I had to start tracking every thing I ate for a week and testing fasting level in the morning and 2 hours after breakfast lunch and dinner. Now I have to send them all my numbers once a week and my 7 day average.

I've been tracking all my food on myfitnesspal now because otherwise I struggle to balance my carbs, protein, fiber, and calories. They told me to aim for 2200 calories and to not try to lose any weight but to keep carbs under control. It feels like I am eating all of the time now but not yummy craving foods. I've found that eating the same breakfast every morning helps (but sucks in some ways) but I am eating so many veggies and lean protein that without 3 snacks a day I wouldn't come close to calorie goal. Plus if I work out by walking or something it looks like I have even more calories. I've lost 4lbs since my education session last Tuesday but have been staying pretty stable on my weight the last couple of days.

This. But I check an hour after eating. They're not concerned with my calories at this point because I'm still under my pre-pregnancy weight. I can have 30g carbs at breakfast, and 3 snacks, and 45g carbs for lunch and dinner. If you eat something with over 5g of fiber, you can halve it and subtract from the carbs to get "net carbs." I think of these foods as having a "coupon," so like your fiber one treats or cereal or carb smart wraps give you more cushion room and make you fuller for longer. @courtjack HELL YES I WANT A SHIRT. @wbwells room service would make this extremely difficult. I'm sorry :( 1500 is way too low.
  • So I went to the Dr. Yesterday and she told me that she's not at all concerned with me losing weight (I'm down about 3 lbs since the start of GB dieting) -- unless I drop like, 20-30 lbs because I'm starving myself (Full disclosure, I'm a bigger girl. My pregnancy starting weight was 208, and I'm currently weighing in around 218-219.)

@wbwells I met with my nutritionist on the day I was diagnosed. She said to limit carbs to basically, 20 at breakfast, 45 for two snacks and 60 for lunch and dinner. Carbs are important because basically your body is going to convert any kind of carb to sugar. I miss sweets and bread and pasta and rice and pizza and gluteny goodness (and also, not being a slave to my meal schedule) but my nutritionist pointed out that my highest priority right now needs to be taking care of myself so that I can take care of baby. I get tugged around a lot at work from meeting to meeting, and often end up eating at bizarre, irregular, intervals (and often something I can race through a drive through to pick up and bring back to my desk, or get at the snack shop upstairs) or even skipping meals entirely.

The bottom line was, that's bad for me and it's bad for baby. So changing up what you eat (packing a healthy lunch and snacks, or eating actual food for breakfast instead of a cup of coffee on your mad dash out the door) may take extra discipline, but in the long run -- shouldn't that be your highest priority right now?

  • I'm frustrated because items that normally should be considered to be healthy are causing Me to spike. It's pissing me off and making me irrationally crabby. Like I realize that a banana and a whole wheat roll have carbs, but don't tell me I can have "45" when it's not about the number really.

Yes. This. I had Greek yogurt and low fat cottage cheese for my snack last night before bed and my numbers were dumb high this morning for my normal. I had to fast since 930 last night to get my monitor checked for accuracy and when I tested at 7am they were 99, at 1030 when I got to the appointment they were 94. So hadn't come down much. Then I finally ate but since I am running around for work and appointments all I could eat was a healthy goody bar thing (dark chocolate, nuts, etc) and a diet mt. Dew. Then my number was at 83. I don't like how inconsistent and random some of this feels. If I eat the same meal the same time every day with same water intake, same sleep, same exercise, same stress, my shit numbers should stay the same. Makes me feel stabby.
  • EXACTLY. And I don't like how the swings feel. Like the other morning it was 69 and I thought I was going to pass out, whereas that would've been close to my normal fasting pre-preg.
  • I took my levels 2 hours after my breakfast "snack" and was 82. I'm shaking and feel like shit and just got lunch. Haven't eaten or drnak anything since last test and tested before I ate because I feel low. No. I'm at 93 again. How does it go up when I haven't eaten or drank anything?!?!
  • @June2016BabyW if your blood sugar level drops low enough and you have extra sugar stored in your liver, your liver will express out sugar to your body until it runs out. So your bloos sugar is usually on a kind of parabolic curve, where it goes up after you eat, then goes down and spikes back up again because your liver is pumping it out when it gets too low. When your liver runs out of sugar that's when you go into ketosis.

I'm a newbie to the diagnosis, but I will be taking the 3 hour class/getting the particulars in my diet.

And yes please to the shirt!!

@shannonrnbsn and @June2016BabyW - I felt like I knew I had GD before I failed even my first test as I started noticing the swings. It'll be interesting to actually start tracking as right now it just seems random other than if I haven't eaten in too long. All of this is just so much to take in!
  • @AshleyBKeen that makes sense. Thank you. I was ready to get stabby on every one because I was frustrated!! Gonna try to regroup myself this weekend and have a better meal plan ready for next week. And fasting is dumb (which is weird because I'm usually all about skipping meals usually).
  • I can't.get.full. And it's making me all sorts of ragey. And I'm even forcing myself to eat things that don't sound good, because they're good for me and what I should be eating. But then I'm still hungry and have just choked down food I wasn't enthused to eat in the first place, and therefore angry about it. And I just.want.pizza.

*back to the regularly scheduled posting, thank you for reading my rant*
  • And I just.want.pizza.
I hear you!  I NEEDED pizza the other day and ended up having an Atkins tv dinner pizza.  It wasn't amazing, but it didn't make my numbers skyrocket, so I called it a win (and felt better by having a little salad with it too)
  • @junebabyjoy I found a whole grain pizza crust at our local Fresh Thyme market. It's got 17g per serving, and I think a serving would be one or two slices. So if you went a little light on the tomato sauce and covered it in good veggies, meat and cheese, you'd be set LB. Also, I ABSOLUTELY knew I had GD before being diagnosed. There would be times that I would be so shaky I almost fainted and I got the tunnel vision/stars effect.
  • Guys I am blowing my macros on the daily. How are you all getting more protein and less fat in?
  • To be honest, I'm not watching that. But your lean meats and legumes should help with that, I would think. Did your doc say you had to watch that?
  • For me greek yogurt helps up my protein intake fairly easily. I also take a protein powder shake when I want additional protein. And I buy the cartons of egg whites at costco. These are all habits from pre-pregnancy that I'll have to get back into now :)
  • Went to a 2.5 hour class today. I'm trying to follow the recommended meal plans and I'm STARVING! Usually I don't have any appetite at all so this is weird. I know veggies are free so when I'm hungry I can scarf down on veggies (yay!) but the problem is... I WANT COOKIES!

Lol. I'll get there. ;) Someone please tell me the beginning is the hardest part.

Okay. How do they expect us to gain weight and not lose weight? They said to gain 1/2 to 1 lb a week, but I don't see how even THAT is possible on this "diet." Or are our babies going to be big even if we lose a few lbs? I know there's a risk we'll have huge babies....

  • The beginning is the hardest part. You settle into a rhythm but still have moments. Weight loss is normal as long as it's a little bit, large weight loss is not okay.
  • I knew I had it before diagnoses because I'd get really thirsty and have light headaches and an overall nauseous feeling. I'm so oblivious I probably would have thought it was just pregnancy if I hadn't had GD with my last pregnancy
  • Also for anyone who can't get full and just wants to feel like they're eating indulgent food, I eat a ton of cheese when I feel that way. Cheese has no carbs. I bought like 4 different kinds. Last night I ate cheddar Jack slices and it was delicious. Then again I'm not sure if any of you are as obsessed with cheese as I am
