Gestational Diabetics Check-In

Re: Gestational Diabetics Check-In

  • That is definitely frustrating and I'm sorry. It's different for all of us but in the end, we all get a beautiful reward! I know we can do this.
  • Loading the player...
  • @alysemciver I'm sorry that this so so challenging for you; it's rough when you are trying but still struggling.  You can do this mama!  I'm thinking of you!
  • Well it happened, I had my first high blood sugar reading today at 137 after lunch :/ are you guys varying wildly from day to day while eating the exact same stuff?

I literally had the same food I had yesterday, and yesterday my post-lunch reading was around 98. What the heck, body?

@alysemciver :( I'm sorry this is being rough on you. My nutritionist said that if you don't take in *any* carbs, then your liver will push out extra sugar to compensate until it runs out and you go into ketosis, which is also bad for baby. :/ How do you avoid that?
  • @alysemciver I'm sorry.  :-(   is it the gestational reason or celiac reason for not getting any bread? I liked udis a lot when I was gluten free trying to figure out what was wrong with my stomach. That also sucks that your GD is hitting harder. Is there any correlation between GD management and celiac? (I'm totally thinking I saw a couple of times you are celiac so if it wasn't you, then I apologize and ignore my nonsense).

@ashleybkeen are you tracking exercise and such as well? Movement after eating can help change glucose levels as well as some other things I think. I'm sorry your number was wonky. It gets stressful trying to figure out what appears to just be randomness a lot!
  • @AshleyBKeen Activity can affect your levels,  so if you were more active yesterday that could be a reason.   My dietician also said that being sick or overly fatigued can affect numbers,  so maybe something like that?   Sorry for frustration - i know it can be difficult!
  • I've been on my butt a lot today, but I work in an office so I'm on my butt MOST days. Exercising is not exactly an option when you're chained to a computer for 8 hours. I did have a two and a half hour director's call this morning, and missed my morning snack as a result. >.< so I should have had *less* sugar in my system than yesterday. Frustrating.
  • Just wanted to jump on here and give you a yummy recipe: https://nutmegnotebook.com/2011/06/chipotle-chicken-taco-salad-2/

it's super yum and easy to customize to tastes :)
  • Maybe it was skipping the snack that threw you off @AshleyBKeen they were pretty insistent that I eat every three hours to keep glucose levels consistent. Don't beat yourself up! You've got this
  • You guys are so sweet, sorry I'm feeling so grouchy. It is all worth it. I can't have bread because of celiac but even GF bread is too much carbs for me for some reason. It's so hard to keep my blood sugar under 200 I pretty much have resorted to insulin, water, grilled meat and green veggies. Thank you guys so much for all being so encouraging when I was feeling shitty, love this thread and this group and all of you
  • That sucks. My heart hurts for you and the frustration that must be.
  • I had a dream about making that recipe last night @MamaNicoleof3 sooo I'm going to have to make it ASAP!
  • Hi ladies! I am 30 weeks pregnant today and found out that I most likely have GD this past week. I am feeling terrible about it and am trying not to beat myself up. I am happy to have found a support group/thread/forum!
  • Welcome!!! You're not alone. These are some great ladies who will help you as best as we can.

I've had GD for 2 weeks and have been fairly good. Today though, Easter, has been tough. Of my 6 pricks, only 2 have been under where they're supposed to be. The other 4 have only been slighty higher...but still. It's tough & frustrating!! :-(
  • I had a dream about making that recipe last night @MamaNicoleof3 sooo I'm going to have to make it ASAP!
It's so good. I made it on Friday night and was
so bummed that the avocado I got for it wasn't ripe yet. Sad day, man.
  • Ya'll! O.O Work luncheon. Wednesday. Indian Buffet. What even do I do!?

o.o; As far as I can tell, Salad and tandoori chicken are my only hope.

  • Stay strong sister. Choose the whole grain carb choices. You can do it!!!
  • Hi ladies. Anyone else totally blow their numbers with Easter last night? My SIL made ham, but I swear there was more brown sugar than ham! ;) And I also didn't refrain from cheesecake. :(

My doc hasn't put me on meds but might. Those on meds, do you find you can get away with eating more carbs?

I do not like artificial sweeteners but I need something delicious! Are you guys staying away from AS?

I had to really restrain myself but ended up doing awesome for Easter. It was definitely hard but I kept thinking of the final reward and realizing that I can eat all the Reese's pieces I want in about 12 weeks. Definitely making lists of things I want people to make for me when baby comes (my mom promises to have a whole batch of her Italian sausage rolls made just for me).

I struggled today not with bad eating but being mad a little about having to restrict my intake or not give in to cravings. And I plan on going out Saturday and getting the sushi roll I love and just hoping and praying my numbers will stay low after it.

ETA: I get artificial sweetener in for my one a day diet sodas. Im not intentionally trying to get it in but not intentionally avoiding it either. And I dont add any to foods or drinks other than the diet soda.
  • Went to bed without a bedtime snack because I was exhausted and woke up at 3:30 feeling awful. Checked my sugar and it was 69. Normally it's 86-95. What the heck. I'm tired of the swings!
  • @June2016BabyW Sorry for your struggling!  I wanted to give a quick heads up on sushi.  I've had it once and I thought I was being good (had one roll, a salad, maybe a soup?) but it was my highest number.  I learned the rice is made with mirin, which is high in sugars.
  • @shannonrnbsn - I'm sorry labor buddy!! Hang in there, you got this!
  • @shannonrnbsn that's a crazy low number for gestational diabetes. Hope you got a bite in to eat and was able to get more sleep!!

@mrsallikat thanks for the heads up. Bummer. How high did it jump your numbers? I was hoping if I ate it then went for a long walk maybe I could balance it out. For some reason a sushi roll sounds soooooo good right now.
  • @June2016BabyW: I just went back to my food log and I had one roll, salad with shrimp, and a little edamame and my 1-hr post eating number was 211 (for reference, I am usually 115 or less after one hour).  It was sad because I felt like I was being good (and tried to find carb numbers online in advance) but decided sushi is out for me for the rest of this pregnancy.  My GD nurse is a Type 1 diabetic and she told me that she can't eat sushi because it makes her sugars go crazy.

Insulin didn't help me eat more carbs it just helped me not blow my numbers out of the water. If I had a fourth cup of brown rice with meat and veggies my number would only be 160 instead of 200. I had to eat some form of carbs though because my keto numbers were out of control
  • My friend kind of made up this recipe for spaghetti squash, and I've never had it so I was really unsure of it, but it turned out delicious! I'm still learning about the GD diet but it's super low carb (I've put the individual things into FitBit to get a more accurate sense of the carbs and I came up with around 20...). Sorry it'll be a long post as she just sent it to me in an e-mail but I really like it and feel good about eating it so I wanted to share!

Also, I did turkey sausage with this and cooked everything in the juices of the turkey sausage.

Roasted Spaghetti Squash with Veggies and White Wine Sauce

    Ingredients:
 1 medium to large spaghetti squash
 ½ cup of fat free chicken broth
 ½ cup of white wine
 1 tbsp of olive oil
     4 stalks of celery – diced
 1 bell pepper (your choice) diced
 1 box of sliced mushrooms
 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
     ½ tsp salt (optional)
     ½ tsp pepper
     1 tsp Italian seasoning
     1 tsp of oregano
 2 tsp of minced garlic
 pinch of cayenne pepper – if you like it spicy!

    Directions:
    1. Preheat the oven to 375
    2. Poke some holes in a “cut line” around the spaghetti squash and then
microwave on high for 7 minutes
    3. Remove squash from microwave, cut in half and scoop out the seeds. Then
brush the flesh with olive oil (this is in addition to your tbsp of olive oil
    listed)
    4. Place the squash flesh side down and roast in the oven for 40-45 min
    5. When there is 10 minutes or so left on the squash, heat the olive oil in a
skillet then add all of the diced veggies and garlic. Sauté for appx. 5 min
    6. Once veggies begin to soften, add in the chicken broth, white wine and all of
the seasonings. Let this simmer for 10 min.
    7. Pull the squash out of the oven when they are done and scrape some of the
flesh out and add it to your sauté pan. Be sure to leave a thick enough layer in
the skin so it doesn’t collapse.
    8. If your sauce is too runny, you can use some cornstarch to thicken it.
    9. Add the sauce with veggies and squash back into the two squash halves and
serve. If you want, add some shredded Parmesan to the top and put them
back in the oven for a few min.
*Note: I add whatever veggies I have on hand to this recipe, so be creative!
  • Thanks LB for the recipe! My H has been attempting to look for options also because he is trying to keep encouraging me through being engaged in it also. Poor guy misses bread and pasta too, so this will be a welcome recipe.
  • I'm glad your H is being supportive! That makes it so much easier   My H looked at this all said and done with quite an odd look but then tasted it and was quite pleasantly surprised. I hope you and your H have the same type of reaction!
  • @MrsAlliKat crap crap crap. I'm not surprised it would raise numbers that much. I was just hopeful that it was something I could still enjoy.

Love quinoa but getting a little tired of it already. And I've never been a big salad eater but have been eating so many more lately. Part of me just wants to go on a food strike! This takes so much planning and I'm not a planner by nature (in regards to most things). And I know for others it is taking even more planning and even more frustration. Blech.
  • Sushi!!!! That reminds me, I'm adding SO much to my list of foods I'm going to eat ASAP after giving birth. Sushi, ice cream, Vanilla Coke.... I crave it all so much more when I can't have it!

    Anyone else?

  • @June2016BabyW I feel you. So much salad. O.O.

    @Boonhilde my most anticipated post baby meal will be a rare steak with blue cheese crumbles, good wine, a baked potato with EVERYTHING and chocolate cake for dessert. Om. Nom. Nom. And then the next day a spicy tuna roll, with Masago and so. Much. Sashimi. And the NEXT day, *finally* a flipping lunch meat turkey sandwich on brioche and ice cream. ;.;
  • I'm going to keep up with the GD diet after giving birth for overall health and wellness.

Jokes. I'm going to eat allllll the pasta in the world. And sushi. So much sushi. With beer. On my deck. In my jammies. And give no shits.
OMGosh LOVE THIS. And so totes right there with you. I was just saying ice cream, sushi, beer awwwwww beer.
  • I saw this on Pinterest and wanted to pass it along to my GD mamas!

  • My favorite line? Because no, butter is not a carb.
  • Damn it. I just want to go through a drive thru that is not Panera.
  • I was super angry about food today. Got an IHOP omelet finally. Just so damn mad some days.
