Anterior Placenta

Re: Anterior Placenta

  • How do you know if you have one?
They will tell you at a ultrasound.
Oh. I've had 3 ultrasounds and no one said anything. I'm having a hard time feeling her but maybe that's because I have extra fat ;)
They told me at my 12 week.  And I think it would be something they would tell you if they noticed it because it sometimes affects whether you can hear the heartbeat with a doppler (which they couldn't in my case).  You could always ask if they know where your placenta is positioned if you are curious :)

  • I agree with @DeriveMyPi they probably would have told you by now.  Some babies just take extra time to feel :)

  • My ob said that they can't tell whether you have an anterior placenta until around 12 weeks since the placenta moves around. I haven't had an ultrasound since I was 9 weeks so I don't know yet. However, last pregnancy I had an anterior placenta.
  • So, I'm 16 weeks in a few days and my stupid anterior placenta obscured a heartbeat!  I went to my midwife appointment and she asked if I wanted to hear the baby's heartbeat.  I told her about my placenta and so she asked if I would freak out if I didn't hear it.  She couldn't find it....boo.  She did hear it kick though.

Sorry about theheartbeat but I'm sure it was nice to hear the kick!
  • @Pankers sorry you couldn't hear the heartbeat but so glad you heard something I would have been a wreck if I had nothing maybe kiddo was practicing some karate in there ;)

  • I'm also a club member. Found out at A/S on Tuesday for the first time (19w3d)!
  • I have one too. I'm 20+1. My OB told me about 3 weeks ago, when I went in for spotting and cramping. She said I probably won't feel the baby until about 23 weeks, but I swear I felt a kick on my hand last night, could have been my pulse, but I'm hoping it was the baby! You will be able to see it on your a/s. I am a nurse and even I was surprised at just how big my placenta is.

  • I'm actually feeling sad to find out I have an anterior placenta. I'll be able to feel the baby at some point right?
  • Found out today that I've got an anterior placenta. I have been feeling baby move for a few weeks (I'm 20 today), but it's very infrequent and not very strong. I've definitely noticed more kicks to my intestines though, which is a strange feeling.
  • I'm finding that if I push on my lower tummy while laying down, I can feel tiny flutters, but nothing when I'm standing up. I guess that's something right?

  • Add me to the list ! found out yesterday I have one as well..not the best news but definitely not the worst!
  • Is anyone else feeling kicks on the inside, like towards my spine and not out towards the world? @Lindsayleigh1989 @noelietrex @TattoosandLace
Someone please tell me I'm not imagining this

I've been feeling movement really low out front (by where we finally found the heartbeat at my last appt) and also little "knock knocks" by my butt that make me feel like I'm  crazy

Mine was also really low but tonight I'm having low back pressure so idk could be baby hugging back there I have only felt a kick once and no other movement so I'm no expert ;)

My low back pain/pressure is noticeably different this pregnancy. With DD, I did not have an anterior placenta. I know every pregnancy is different, but I'm sure that has something to do with it.
  • Well I'm glad I'm not nuts. Thanks ladies! I'm having lots of pressure down low too, almost like he's pushing up against my left hip bone and my spine. It's so weird.
  • I feel nothing :(

Don't worry I hit the halfway mark today and I have felt one solitary jab and nothing since ;) it will come sucks though I wish I could feel her more!

  • Ok I'm at 19 + 1 and this is my first. When I went to have my ultrasound the tech hardly explained what this all meant. Hopefully my doctors appointment will be better tomorrow

For sure ask for an explanation mainly the placenta is creating a cushion between you and the baby which is why it makes it much more difficult  to feel the baby :) hope your appointment goes well keep us updated !

  • Still not feeling a thing but I'm not stressing over it. I have Chron's and IBS so I think it might just take me a long time to differentiate between bowel and baby
  • Anterior placenta is on the right. So it creates an extra layer and that is why we don't feel kicks until a bit later when the baby is bigger. No need to worry @cpocks
  • So what I feel lower down may be her little movements? I'm not sure though. The images and reading back through this thread sure help. It's just frustrating but glad it isn't just me and glad I found some other people in the same boat!

    Thanks for the support!
  • @cpocks the babies are very low right now anyway under belly button level when I have felt little flutters they have been very low so it definitely could be that. I'm realizing too how difficult it is for me as a FTM to even know what im looking for.

  • Shoot I must just be farting lots jokes
it's hard to know as a FTM but yeah I probably have felt something then? I know she was moving lots on our ultrasound
  • I just got back from my A/S and looks like I'm in the club too! I have felt a couple fluttery movements but nothing too sharp or noticeable yet (20w2d but measuring ahead). I am glad I lurked here before finding out either way, the diagrams were helpful.
  • @theshannondee same here! Found out today but have felt small flutters, maybe once a day. And I'm not even sure if it's actually baby!
  • I felt some small flutters last night! I don't think I'd recognize them if I didn't know what to look for! (I'm 17 weeks, STM.)
  • Doctor told me this is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about. It is when it is low and you may risk the chance of bleeding aka placenta previa that they worry.

Also the doctor was able to find and feel movement and was able to show me how she's moving so that was amazing!
I'm 19 weeks today and she thinks I will feel her in 2-3 weeks and 24 weeks at the latest.
  • @cpocks Nice, glad you got to see her moving!

I'm 19 weeks today as well and I haven't felt anything yet (and this is my second, also my second anterior). I was thinking the same thing, that I'll likely feel her in a few weeks. I think the last time it was between 22-25 weeks that it started kicking in (pun intended)

  • Ok here is some hope!!!! After going to the doctor today and her pushing a bit on my belly to show me the movement I suddenly can feel my little girl moving like crazy!!!
So people I'm not saying push on your tummy but I am saying it's going to happen for us
  • Add me to the club! I have been feeling movement but my midwife said that's why I only ever felt it way over on the side, never in the middle. It made me feel better about not feeling consistently. But she assured me I'll feel it more regularly very soon!
  • Oh also! I find that lightly pressing on the side of my belly has allowed me to feel more movement. Maybe it's because I'm aggravating the baby but it's comforting and my husband can feel it from the outside when I do that sometimes too.
