Re: **The Everything Random Thread for April Mamas**

  • It is so incredibly cold in my classroom. It is 73 outside (nice, right?) but my room is so much colder, like an igloo. I'm pretty sure they have the a/c turned on. Which doesn't even make sense, because the highs haven't even gone over 70 for over a week. It was supposed to be a bit warmer today, we have hit the projected high of 73, so I wore flip flops with my jeans...my toes are frozen. My fingers are even frozen. I want to curl up in front of a warm fireplace. This is just nonsense...!

  • @emgee27 Don't be too jealous! It doesn't always produce! Summer 2014 we had a ridiculous amount, like to the point that we had to go out at least once a day to collect them so we wouldn't have rotting mangos on the ground, we had mango in our dinners 3-4x a week, and we chopped up and froze so many we were still having mango in our smoothies until almost spring 2015! This past summer? I think I could count the number of edible mangos we collected on one hand. I'm really hoping this summer we have a good season, because DD1 loves them, and I'd also love to freeze some to be able to make DD2 fresh organic home grown mango puree!

I'm not sure how any of this is supposed to make me less jealous!!! haha! ;)

Also, I'm sorry about your toes. Having my feet be too cold is one of my absolute pet peeves!
  • Mangos are icky.  :s
  • @emgee27 Lol I guess more in the sense that sometimes we're rolling in the mangos (YAY!) and other times I wait and wait, hoping we'll get some, having recipes that we love and want to make, only to be sadly disappointed by a poor showing of fruit that year...we had this one recipe I made several times the year we had an over abundance, barbecue chicken cilantro smoked cheddar and mango quesadillas...I was looking forward to them this year, and then we had only enough mango to feed the crazy toddler.

  • I'm with @cmjenkies on mangos being icky. I also hate the texture of pretty much every fruit known to man, so any reference to fruit usually gets an ewww from me.

Now THAT is an UO! Yum!!
My grandma was allergic to them, her face swelled up crazy anytime she was around anything mango.. including sloppy toddler kisses after eating fruit squeeze pouch things. Whoooops. I swore them off after that, and even though she's been gone for over a year I still don't eat anything with them in it.

Once upon a time I did try a really delicious mango salsa, pre-grandma allergy haha.
  • I'm not sure what I think of mangoes, but I keep thinking of the song "underneath the mango tree" from James Bond.

Sometimes I feel really bad for some of my students. At the holidays we do these "candy grams" where kids spend $.50 to send a piece of candy with a card to whoever they want. Then in the last hour of the day we pass them out. There are ALWAYS a few kids who don't get anything. And I feel like the bad guy because I'm the one walking around passing out the candy and cards. There are 23 kids in my class and only 3 didn't get anything, while the rest are trading their candy and asking who sent them and how many they got. This is why I love the rule in elementary that if you're going to bring in something for some kids it has to be for ALL kids :/

That is kinda sad. I remember they did that when I was in elementary. I sent myself one at least once though, haha.
  • @imrachellea they did them at the elementary school I teach at today...there were lots of hurt feelings, and the principal sent out an email quickly that asked teachers to just put them in the kid's valentine bags instead of calling the students out to receive them in front of the class.

Ok, totally valid reason to skip them.

Oh man, I've been eating mangoes like crazy for months. So delicious.
Me too. In fact, my family knows I love mangoes so much that everyone buys them for me. On Monday, my MIL brought a case of 9 for me. I actually don't think I've purchased a single mango this whole pregnancy and I've always had them in stock at my house! <3
  • I had amazing mango juice in st Lucia and I've bought mangos since and I have no idea how to tell when they are ripe. I always screw it up

I'm the same way with avocados but DH is great at it. It's the only reason he comes grocery shopping XD

Depends on the kind of mango, but typically they are slightly soft on the outside and you get a mango-ey smell from the skin. If they aren't ripe enough, they don't smell as strong usually. If I happen to cut a not-so-ripe one, I just coat it in lime/lemon with a little salt and it's still amazing!

I know how to tell a ripe avocado but I can't seem to pick good ones, like ones that won't have too much brown or those terrible veins running through them. My MIL however is the avocado whisperer...she always picks ones that turn out PERFECT.

I like bumping Mike with mine and telling him to stop whatever he's doing because baby doesn't like it. He usually laughs and walks away, so I call it a victory.
  • Oh lord. My husband is pricing 4 foot tall teddy bears and he will not be deterred. I love the man, but really?  We should probably consider picking up the things we actually need before we start snapping up things that are not only completely unnecessary but also completely impractical.

...Although it is kind of cute to see him getting so excited about spoiling her.

Oh my gosh. When I was pregnant with DD, Costco had these huge, practically life size teddy Bears for sale. DH tried to buy one on multiple occasions (I think they still have them, shhh) Super cute, but not the best use of space haha.

  • They most definitely still have them! We were gifted one by a very excited family member when we announced we were pregnant. It takes up lots of nursery space, but it is adorable.

Mine came home one night this week with a stuffed pink unicorn that is bigger than our 60 pound dogs.  "She needed it."  (Kind of adorable, I must admit)

  • So do I have to have a nursing bra? I don't really wear bras, and wasn't planning on getting one, but apparently it's a necessity???

I just found a lightly padded bra that was easy to move out of the way. Front close bras also work. Some form of bra (or shelf bra from a camo) is probably advisable just so you can have breast pads to prevent leaks. I ended up not nursing for very long with DS, but that's my two cents.

I agree, if you don't typically wear a bra you probably don't need to buy nursing ones, but I would HIGHLY recommend the nursing camis, because you will need something to keep the nipple pads in place and they're just so dang convenient.

I think it depends on the person. I personally need one because when I had DD I leaked a lot and hated having it show up on my shirts even if I just stayed home. It was just one of those small pet peevs of mine. So I needed a nursing bra that would hold a pad easily.

Also it was nice to have so that if I needed to get out of the house for a 10 minute break I could run inside the store for something and didnt feel awkward with it all hanging free lol my boobs are to big for that to be comfortable enough for me to do.

But like i said, it depends on the person and their preferences

  • Same boat momma! My son just turned 2, and while I always thought of him as a "terrible sleeper": up to nurse every 1.5-2 hrs, not STTN until 11 months, he always went down quickly after nursing. Thankfully he is a good sleeper now, and hopefully baby #2 doesn't change that! I think our worries are normal...best of luck to you!

My shower was actually lovely! I'm waiting to get pictures from my sisters so I can start a baby shower AW thread ;)
