@mamabish So I just looked up that Jason means healer. Galen means tranquil and calm but is also the name of a second century physician and philosopher so Galen also means "healer". Sort of a stretch but could appease hubby...

Not sure about Galen but I like this approach! Name meaning vs name sound, it could def help!
@dolewhipper I have a student named Jude and every single day I say "Hey Jude!" without thinking about it and then laugh at myself in my head. But nobody ever sings Hey Jude to the kid and I think he's blissfully unaware. I also have two Stellas and even though I initially wanted to scream STEELLLLLLAAAAAA I repressed the urge and don't even think about it. My guess is Layla would be similar if people even made the connection. Plus, it's a really pretty name.
I didn't realize Stella was getting so popular. We will be naming this baby girl Stella Audrine, as it was my grandmothers name, but STEELLLAAA!!! definitely was brought up.
And now the challenge. What name would go with Murphy?? We had a girl name but no boy name. I like Finn, DH wants Finnegan but we haven't even come to an agreement on that at all. Ugh this naming a human thing is hard work.
I put Murphy and Finnegan into Nymbler and here are some of the results.

Oh, I love Declan! My maiden name is Rowan, so we'll be using that for a middle name if we have a boy.
@dolewhipper my niece's name is Lila. I prefer that spelling but probably just because that's the only Lila I know IRL.
I love Layla though. I don't think they'd get the reference often, if at all.
Do you all pronouce her name "lee-lah"? Thats how I would if I saw it spelled thay way. Were going for "lie-lah" and figured the y might make people go that direction.

My name is Stella and I've had the "STELLAAAAAA" thing said to me my entire life. I don't mind it, but it still happens now. If the reference were something I hated it might bother me but I love that movie so it's okay. It's funny to me that now it's a popular name because my entire life I never met another person with my name (though it was apparently everyone's grandma's name). Everything cycles through I guess! For those thinking about it, the name has served me very well!
@Taymiller you know I'm partial to finn. People always asked me when I was pregnant and said finn was an option if I would name him Finnegan or Phineas and just call him finn, but I am SUPER anti "naming your kid a name, but planning on calling them something else." But that's me. If I need to call him something "longer" aka he's doing something he isn't supposed to I just bust out the middle name.

We have a name for either a girl or a boy picked out, Madalyn Elizabeth and Issac Daniel. The middle names are family and we just fell in love with the names. Hoping for a girl, but a happy healthy baby boy would be loved just the same . Due July 9th!
Sometimes I can't believe people who are procreating can be this daft. And then shit like this happens.
A question to the actual topic though, for a girl: Layla or Lyla? I don't necessarily want my future daughter having people "falling on their knees" for her. But I'm not sure if people with names associated with songs actually get really annoyed by others singing it to them.
I like "Lyla" but would also spell it Lila. Like my great-great-aunt. Classic name.
As for me... I think I've narrowed my boy names... Please weigh in. Honestly.
Evander Rhys or Galen James
I'm also starting to feel iffy on the girl name.... but DH freaking loves it so I'm just blaming hormones and sticking it out. Lol.
ETA: I really wanted to work in the name Delton with my boys. But I can't figure a way to make it work that I like. It's a family name (incidentally my Aunt Lila's brother.)

I think it would be older people making the reference to Eric Clapton. I do like Layla a lot for girl.

Ummmm.....the whole Stella thing, I always think of this (link below). Which is fine, because I love the name Stella and I love this show. Every time my husband hears the name Stella, he thinks of the same thing, and we start laughing!
@MotherOfDucks As much as I like Galen, I know two men with this name, and both of them deal with people shortening their name to "Gay" a lot.......both as a friend just calling them that, and someone doing it to offending them. "Oh okay.....whatever you say, GAY!"
And then my poor friends husband, Gai.nus, gets the "gay anus" comments all of the time.
Hey all! Loving these name ideas here my husband and I have decided to choose between several, narrow it down to 3 or so, and wait until we meet our little one to officially decide! Anyone else doing this?
Also, just so my post isn't completely off topic... do you mama's think it's alright to have an "I don't give a &#$@ about your opinion" when it comes to negativity on your name choices? Since we're talking about opinions, I thought it was a valid question! I don't want to seem rude to my friends and family, but it is our child after all!

I think you just have to be clear on whether or not you're asking for opinions. People have asked me if I thought about names and the first thing I say is, "Yes, we've already decided, so if you hate it, keep your opinions to yourself." Then I don't mind sharing.
I think some people assume that when you give them a list of names you're considering it means you want them to give their two cents. Some people want opinions, some don't. Also, if they insist on giving their opinion anyway, tell them to shut up.

Absolutely! Best thing to do if you don't want opinions is to keep the name choices to yourself. Most people won't give an opinion after the baby is born.
Everyone has asked if we have names picked out. We tell them yes, we do. They are going to be a surprise! I know if I were to tell my mom or sister the names with the disclaimer to keep their opinions to themselves that they wouldn't and tell me anyways.
@fleurdelakeview I'm glad I'm not the only one whose husband can't have a serious discussion. He suggested we name her Candy because he wants her to have a stripper name and he likes candy.
This gave me such a good laugh for the day, just when I needed it most, Thank You!!! Your hubby is such a jokester, I loved it! At least he is coming up with something. My DH won't even talk about it until we find out the sex of the baby....ugh!

@JenniO4 Well your husband is still ahead of mine at least. Mine says that he will start thinking about it and start discussing it when we are in the delivery room.....

We also aren't making any final decisions until we actually meet the baby. We've discussed names and each have a few we like, and a few we individually liked that have been nixed, but none that are definite contenders even. I wanna meet this person before I decide what to name it!
And I agree with pp on making it clear whether you want opinions. I think people take it as an invitiation to offer their two cents when you tell them what names you're thinking of, instead of saying straight up that you've already decided. So in your case, I probably wouldn't share my list with people since nothing is set in stone people will feel they can weigh in on the decision.
@kaylaa22 We also decide early, but we don't tell anyone until baby is born. We know some people will give an opinion whether or not we want to hear it. Plus, since we are team green, we can save the other name for a future baby and not worry about someone thinking it's okay to diss that name after baby is born.
I'm 15 weeks along with our Rainbow Baby and DH and I are pretending (while pretending on my side LOL) to ague about gender. He's certain LO will be a boy (and will be surprised if ultrasound if LO is a girl) and I keep saying that baby could be a girl. I have no clue what I want for a boy's name, and I haven't asked DH about it yet, but I have girl names running around in my head. I want to combine our mom's names (it's what my parent's did) but Im not sure how to, or if I want to use their first names or middle names. My parents used their mom's first names, but DH's mom has a double first name. Emma Louise is my mom MaryAnn is DH's mom (technically Ann is her middle name but b/c she had a really long last name her parents wanted to give her a break in school they thought Mary-Ann Middle Name Last Name would be to much.
Also Im trying to decide if I want to go the rout my parent's did or the route DH's Mom's did. Double First name, Middle, Last or just a First Middle (the becomes the first) and then last.
I like Anne Louise Last Name and then call her Anne Louise, But DH pointed out how much it bugs me and his mom when people only use the first part of our name and do we want to perpetuate that problem with our LO?
I thought about Anne-Louise Elizabeth (Last Name) but wonder if that would be to much of a mouthful, but then again they won't be little for ever.....O.O has anyone else ever had a decision resolve in their mind mid asking other people what they think? I really, really like the look of Anne-Louise Elizabeth ......
Or Mary-Louise Elizabeth?
P.S. The reason I want to spell Ann with and E is b/c ever since I read Anne of Green Gables I have become slightly obsessed with spelling Anne that way.
Our First LO was born sleeping and we named him Daniel Elijah, I have no clue what names to even think of for our little Rainbow Baby if She (which I will keep calling Her until we know gender for sure b/c it gets DH's goat a little). This is a list of names we had going before Danny was born: These Were My Idea's Michael Anthony Peter Anthony James Mathew Noah Jeremiah Jacob Anthony Ezra These were DH's Ideas: Aaron Dominic Noah Dominic Noah Peter Noah Melchizedek (DH"s said it as a joke and I added to the list just b/c ) John Jeremiah

Huh, after looking back at this list, I wonder why I hesitate to give a girl a tough/long name to use but have a whole bunch of long names for boys....maybe it's b/c I don't think of using these as a double first name, just a first and middle...
@mommyTARDIS Have you thought about maybe using Annalise? Then you would still get the Anne sound, and "lise" which is kind of close to Louise (you are just ditching the "ou").....and it would be all one name.

You poor thing, I feel for you. That sounds frustrating to wait til the last minute especially when the pregnancy hormones are all about planning and preparing.!!!

@JenniO4 Im not too worried. We walked into the hospital with almost 20 names for DD (still on separate lists), and she was named in 10min (first name on one list, middle name not on either)...but it is a little frustrating. But the other night, we were waiting for the fire in the fireplace to go out, and DD was in bed, so I threw some names at him and he did mention the TYPE of names that he doesn't like and ones that he does like, so at least we are getting somewhere....even if it is very, very, very slowly.
