Re: The Names You Want Opinions On Thread

  • Jealous of you ladies who have been able to narrow it down to one name. I'm terrified we will get attached to a name, and then when we see the baby, the name won't feel right.

Right now our top girl name is Sloane with Ava, Chloe and Mila as backups. The only boy name we have been able to agree on is Lennon. Hoping to find a couple backups if baby is a boy too.

Not sure now whether I want classic or edgy. I'm torn.

Charlotte is my top name. That or Anabell can't decide on middle names though.
I think Gay makes a great middle name for either of those.

As stated in my original post, I'm not a fan of the name my husband is. Thanks though.

  • @PinkLady2015 Eloise is probably our girl name. I love how old woman it is! I need to find a middle name that goes with it well, though. Although I am super sad anytime anyone puts it on their list, as then more people will use it!

Jealous! I love all E old lady names! (Eleanor, Evelyn...)
    What about Eloise Rose? Swooooonnn
  • Ohhhh that is pretty! <3
  • I think you can totally strong arm your hubby on this one. Especially if tears are involved.

Is it a bit b****y and domineering of me to strongarm my husband into have my father's name as a middle name for a boy if he gets to pick the first name?  I feel like my desire to honor my dead father trumps my husband thinking the name 'sounds ethnic' (whatever that means).

    Girl:  Emily Olivia
    Boy: _____ Derryl

    You win. The end.
  • Also, how is Derryl "ethnic" sounding?
RIGHT?!  I have no idea.  I associate 'Derryl' with the South, for sure, but my dad was from Arkansas so I can see how my brain makes that connection.
  • All the "Darrell"s I've personally known were black, but I feel like media has plenty that are white, or other races. So, sounds racially multi-functional to me. I think I'll patent that phrase though.

Do they pronounce their names 'DARE-el' (think Daryl Hannah) or 'Duh-rehl'?  I have a study participant named 'Darrell' and the first time I pronounced it the same as my father's name (first pronunciation) he corrected it to the second pronunciation. They look the same, but sound slightly different.
  • How do you pronounce Evelina? I read that name in a book awhile back and I thought it was really pretty but I could never quite figure out the pronunciation. Eve-lee-nuh or eva-lee-nuh? Or something else?
  • I love the name Kael but unfortunately hubby has banned it. His family owns an Edible Arrangements so he worked there his teenage years and he says Kael is too much like the kale they use as the arrangements base. :(

I don't blame you. My H and I argue about this too. My dad's name was William but no one called him that. H was named after his dad and hated him so he doesn't want to name a baby after anyone. I'm thinking about using the middle name Marshall (my dad's) and just sliding it in there. I told him he could have the girl name he loves if I could pick the boy name. Lol. We shall see.
    Good luck.
For the record, I don't think Derryl is "ethnic" sounding. Has he been watching The Office? Is that the only place he's heard the name?
  • @Nerdchild I don't think derryl is ethnic sounding but everyone I know besides Daryl Dixon with that name is Black. The all pronounce it like Daryl hannah.
  • Having issues coming up with a girls name :( I want her to be named after my mom which had passed away Connie. But I'm thinking of using it as a middle name. I've liked the names Lavina, Amory, or Annabelle. But idk.. It's hard picking names!!

They were all pronounced DARE-el, from what I recall.

I know a Daryl that is a short balled caucasion guy.

Eta: removed offensive word, because I didn't mean to sound like an ass.I'm totally leaving the bald typo tho because its hilarious
  • I know a Daryl that is a short balled white guy. Not ethnic
This. I know three Daryl's. Two of them are white as can be, and one is half Mexican.

  • Thanks for that @MotherOfDucks I was getting really bothered by "ethnic." Whiteness is composed of ethnicities too, and veiled language for non-white (like ethnic or urban) come off as racist, even if they're not intended that way.

I made a HUGE mistake this morning when my mother asked me if we had picked a boys name yet. I told her DH wants Easton but I also like Lincoln. I was met with dead silence. It was a rookie mistake and I knew better, which is why I should not talk to my mother on the phone while driving at 6 am.

For a boy DH likes Easton Alan. I am not completely sold on it yet, but it's growing on me. I also like Lincoln Alan. For a girl first name will be Margaret (family name) we are thinking Ann as a middle and Mack as a nickname (last name starts with a K). I would like a different A middle name but I can't think of anything that sounds good.
Margaret Amy? or Margaret Alyssa? Couple of suggestions for you. I know a lot of times an "A" as a middle initial is Ann.
@mckcak23 Mine is Anne with an E. :)

@MotherOfDucks Sorry dude, I was pulling a direct quote from my husband who uses 'ethnic' to describe anything not white. He also hates Latino names and lumps them under the 'ethnic' umbrella term. I hate it too.

Eta: only saying it here to describe use of the actual word. Not trying to pot-stir. Promise.

I love you NC but your H sounds biggot as fuck
  • @mckcak23 I told my mom over Christmas and was also met with stony silence, and then a stiff smile. All the names are from other sides of the family than hers, but I just don't care.

  • I love the name Kael but unfortunately hubby has banned it. His family owns an Edible Arrangements so he worked there his teenage years and he says Kael is too much like the kale they use as the arrangements base. :(
I love Kael, but I can see why he wouldn't want to use it. A friend of mine named her son Chael (like Kael), and every time I see it written down, my brain wants to pronounce it CH-ael (like CH like in "change")

    QBF

There's an MMA fighter named Chael Sonnen and he pronounces it the second way you mentioned. We actually liked that name for a bit.
