Any opinions on Bennett James B________? (Not sold on the middle name. More concerned about the first name right now) Our last name is very English sounding. I can't decide if it will be too much of a mouthful. Also my maiden name is Bennett so I love the idea of incorporating that.

I like the name Bennet know an adorable little boy with the name. There is a good chance we are using James in one of our kids names as it is a family name. I think your name flows nicely

@Nerdchild Education/undoing taught racism is the best thing you can do. And raising our kids differently. The burden of change is on white people, and there is some work to be done for sure.

I haven't fully discussed names with anyone.. just been making a list on my phones notebook haha.
Two names we've discussed are

Freya with either Nanette or Jo as middle name (Nanette for my nanny or Jo, which is a slight tradition my moms and my middle name is Jo... short for josephine)
Peytie Jo

for a boy
Dashel either James or Taylor
I havent brought up this one yet to my fiance. He likes the name Elijah or Eli and i just dont for some reason.

Our boy name is Eldon Archer.

Our girl name was Mirah (which I still love) but I'm worried she'll get called Miriah a lot.

We love Ophelia but I can't come up with a cute nickname... Oph? No....
Any suggestions?

I find this totally untrue. The "burden of change" is on ALL people, not just whites. As a white woman I have been the victim of racism from different ethnicities, and have seen far too much racism in my life from people of every single background. No one race is utterly responsible for all of the racism in the world. It's something that needs to be addressed by everyone, and tolerated by none.

@benten24 No, racism cannot exist without oppression. Discrimination can. White people are and have been the oppressive race in this country (and most parts of the world) for generations. Hatred is not our problem alone, but the systemic and cultural racism in this country is.

ETA: I'm speaking specifically about the U.S. Racism globally is still linked to oppression, but the oppressors are not always inherently white.

I love that name Ophelia! But you are right, it's hard coming up with nicknames for it. Only thing I can come up with us Phelia and Lia (Leah).

Mirah is a very pretty name too.

My husband and I have irrevocably fallen in love with the name Charlotte. I know it is popular to the max and normally that would bug me but I love it. Two problem are the MN and the NN.

The middle names I like at least a little bit are:

Charlotte Ann (My Grandmothers MN)

Charlotte Renee (My Mother MN)

Charlotte Grace

I would love some other smooth flowing options!

I don't really like any of the nick names I can think of. I could be persuaded to like Lottie a little more. I don't like Charlie, Char, Char Char, Charlee (Sharlee). Anyone know of any others that might work?

H and I have been avoiding the name conversation for a while and last night we finally talked about it and I think we have names picked out. Russell Albert for a boy. My dad's middle name is Albert. And Lucille Bea for a girl, though I am not 100% sold on the middle name. 9 more days till our anatomy scan.

Sometimes I can't believe people who are procreating can be this daft. And then shit like this happens.

A question to the actual topic though, for a girl: Layla or Lyla? I don't necessarily want my future daughter having people "falling on their knees" for her. But I'm not sure if people with names associated with songs actually get really annoyed by others singing it to them.

I think it would be older people making the reference to Eric Clapton. I do like Layla a lot for girl.

And now the challenge. What name would go with Murphy?? We had a girl name but no boy name. I like Finn, DH wants Finnegan but we haven't even come to an agreement on that at all. Ugh this naming a human thing is hard work.

Having a really rough time trying to figure out a possible boy name. We have girl names narrowed to 2 possibilities but we have nothing for a boy.

Originally (about 10 years ago) we wanted Jaden but it's just too popular. We then went through all the "J" names and there's nothing. So now we are stuck back at square one.

DH likes boy names that reference the dad's name somehow. His name is Jason.

He has since suggested Mason which is nice but way too popular right now.

Help!!

@dolewhipper I have a student named Jude and every single day I say "Hey Jude!" without thinking about it and then laugh at myself in my head. But nobody ever sings Hey Jude to the kid and I think he's blissfully unaware. I also have two Stellas and even though I initially wanted to scream STEELLLLLLAAAAAA I repressed the urge and don't even think about it. My guess is Layla would be similar if people even made the connection. Plus, it's a really pretty name.
