  • @denny+lee Yeah I can see it if you birth at home and then you're literally just lying in bed with your baby attached to your boob all day long and can just like...I don't know...hide it in a bag? what do they do? Lol.

Yup, they carry it around in a bag. I watched a thing about all the various birth plans and a lotus birth was one. Not gonna lie, I found it super weird that the sprinkled it with spices and herbs so it didn't smell bad. Carrying around a bag of rotting organ meat just isn't my cup of tea I guess.
  • ...I feel like my cat would eat it and that would be upsetting.

I feel like this would be something better tucked into a sock. I mean, I know sometimes they leave the placenta attached, too, so maybe like knee socks? That wouldn't be cumbersome on a baby.

Woah...... what? Placentas should be tucked into a baby's knee sock because it would be less cumbersome? Am I reading this correctly? WTH lol!

    Duct tape. Bam, done.
  • BTW, I Googled "lotus birth". I sincerely wish I hadn't. The images are not something to be seen. Nope.
  • I did find this amazing Jezebel post about it https://jezebel.com/would-you-let-your-newborn-keep-his-placenta-for-six-da-1452339792

"As someone who walked this gauntlet when I decided that, as a former drinking, smoking, totally unhealthy boozehound, that I suddenly needed a drug-free, natural birth in a water tank of ultimate zen, I can relate to the fact that the notion of doing it right when it comes to having your baby, whatever the fuck right means, is a highly individual. As bizarre as this is, it's this lady's "feels right." As a citizen of choices, I gotta give it to her, hook, line and placenta."

I believe these cases are all to be a people who traveled to South America. From the research I could tell, none of the cases originated in the state.

None of them did, but if they still have active virus in their system and are bit by the right mosquito, they have the potential to spread it. Hopefully the fact that they've identified the people means they'll properly contain this. I never thought I'd be cheering on snow coming, it'll at least keep the mosquito's at bay.

Interesting. I was just watching the news, and they said that people infected with the virus and in the US do not pose a threat for spreading it... Off to do more research. It's such a scary topic!

EDited to add: CDC says in addition to mosquito bites, it can be transferred mother to child (pregnancy) and through contaminated blood. I wouldn't consider someone infected as a risk to me unless I was handling their fluids. That being said, keep them the F away from me anyway!!

I think though that if an infected person is bitten by another mosquito, it poses the potential to procreate. So someone may have traveled to Florida from one of those countries, but that doesn't contain it from spreading if local mosquitos become infected. It can't spread from person to person.

Edited to add: someone with it would be a risk to you because now we don't know if it has infected our mosquito population.

    Fun food for thought!

My DH and I have a baby moon/vacation planned to Costa Rica in March for 4 days. The condo stay was a wedding gift and can't be changed. My parents and his friends are going as the condo sleeps ten. My question: If Zika is found in Costa Rica/OB says too risky, should he go without me? I brought up the option and neither of us is sure how we feel about it. Would you encourage your H to go without you?

If it's found there, is there a possibility he could bring it back with him?  If there are no health concerns, I'd be ok with H going if his friends are going.  I would be sad but glad he could get some fun time before baby.  Could he still do a mini vaca with you?

It's not transferable from person to person, only through the bite of a specific breed of mosquito so no issues there. I'm not sure realistically what we could do otherwise.
  • I'm dying reading the posts about the placenta in the tubesock or having the cat eat it. Cannot stop laughing.

Actually, the debate is still out on that one.  It may be sexually transmitted but that is still an "unknown" (pretty much like everything else about this stupid virus).  I am glad I ended up canceling our St Lucia trip though...my doctor told me today that would have been her recommendation even though the virus is not yet confirmed in St Lucia (and she is a pretty laid-back doctor).  I hate zika right now.

I discussed with H him going to St Lucia without me.  He didn't really want to go without me to begin with...once I found some research that the virus can possibly be transmitted sexually, that sealed the deal.  I've never been so glad to be stuck in the miserable cold weather where all the mosquitoes are dead but I'm really bummed for H that his 40th birthday is going to be stuck here in the cold.
  • @Bear14+ @nicknshan It's really scary. Even with the cold (not really cold but 50's and 60's) I still sometimes get bit. Not all infections lead to microcephaly but I certainly don't want to risk that! And one of the patients came from Colombia, that's not even on the CDC's list.

  • My fiancee put on some deer with cream of mushroom soup in the crock pot last night & now my whole apartment smells disgusting. He's always experimenting with new food & I'm usually the guinea pig, but I think I'm sitting this concoction out. On the other note my 23 m/o daughter slept 17 1/2 hours yesterday night, & 14 hours last night. I'm beginning to believe that aliens have abducted my daughter & replaced her with a sleepy headed clone! Ohh, & my anatomy ultrasound is on the 28th, fingers crossed it has a penis! :)
