What sucks is being set on names and having my (Mexican) husband say they 'don't sound white enough' for his taste (Paloma and Adriana are out, boo). Having him nix my father's name because it 'sounds black' (what?!) and he thinks his (racist) father will freak out. My father's name is Derryl, which I think just sounds southern, probably because my dad was from Arkansas so that's how I make that association.
Also, Alice and Jane are names I love, but my husband says those names are 'Old and plain'.
@TattoosandLace We're going Everett David if it's a boy, which I love. Both first & middle for boy and girl are family, so that makes me smile. We're set on Barbara Louise for a girl. Barbara was my grandma's name and even though half of my friends have MIL's named Barbara that they can't stand I love the idea of naming a baby for my grandma, who was so important to me.
Our name choice is the same for a boy or a girl... Max. Not a longer version. Just Max. I like it more for a boy, but my husband likes it more for a girl, so it may just be the name we go with either way. I know Mark Zuckerberg just named his daughter Max (Maxima) and I know it doesn't matter, but we were thinking of it before that happened.
My fear is that it'll be really cute for a girl if she's a cute little girl, but when she's a teenager she'll have to go through an awkward stage and also be "Max". At first, I tried to think of a longer girly version, but I don't like Maxine or Maxima.
For a boy, it would be Max Robert (Robert is the name passed down on H's side.)
For a girl, I think I'd want a really pretty girly middle name.
I don't really have a list of names to share yet, but feel free to tell me what girl names you think sound good with Norah (DD1). I just don't really like top 10 names, but other than that, I'm open to ideas.
Good taste DD is Norah as well.
We're pretty set on Isla for number 2 if it's another girl. Other names high on my list but vetoed for various reasons: Susanna, Daniella, Charlotte (this might be top 10, I know it's very popular), Stella, Vivienne, Aria (again super popular), Jane, Josephine. I have many more but I can't think of them right now.
I'd love to hear what you think some "short, strong" names are. I've been hung up on Elle for a very long time.
@ellou05 I've always loved Wren but I'm not sure if I could pull the trigger on it or if it's a guilty pleasure name. Are you set on one syllable? Or just short? I also love Jane, Anna/Anne and Maren
Elle is really pretty. My only concern would be that names with Ellie/Ella for a nickname are very popular right now so there might be a few of those in her age group. I don't know if that really matters to you though
I am not set on names, but I too have a Mexican DH as someone else mentioned so whatever I bring up his response is..well in Spanish it means this so, or in Spanish it's pronounced like this...yes, I speak Spanish too and you said you didn't want it to be a Spanish name so this is what happens! My grandmother's maiden name was Finn so I like that for a boy. I, too, like Isla for a girl. Dh's two girls are V names, but I really don't like any V names other than theirs so I don't know if we can stick with that theme. We are team green so I have to come up with both. I'm also one and done so I want it to be a name I really love...oh the struggle.
@TattoosandLace Amelia Anne is very pretty! But (based on the way you worded your comment) you get veto power if you don't love it as much as DH does. My vote for a boy name is Everett Marshall. I love family names as middle names
@thebigoaktree I love Ronan. I floated Rowan, Ronan and Roman to DH for a boy because I love them all (he vetoed Rowan and Ronan). Also love that the middle name honours so many people. DD's middle name honours MIL and my sister, and her first name honours my mom.
@natinat6 LOVE Livia. So pretty. It was on my list at one point. Love the nickname Liv/Livy but I have a nephew Oliver, so Olivia was out for me. I found Livia when I was searching for alternatives and thought it was so pretty.
@austinjl I don't think it's a big deal to repeat middle names! My nephew's middle name is after my dad and if we have a son his middle name is still on the table for us. I wouldn't repeat a first name but middle names are free game in my opinion.
If we have another girl she'll be Isla. Girl names have always been super easy and we've come to a 99.9% sure agreement early in pregnancy both times.
Boys names are where we struggle and would love feedback/suggestions. Last time we went into the delivery room with James and Julian. James is off the table, Julian clinging on barely. Right now our front runners are Roman or Miles. Other names we still throw around are Harrison, Grayson (my sister might be using this), or Liam (might be too popular).
I think my favourite is Roman - but I'd love honest opinions about it because we've gone through so many I'm questioning myself at this point. I suggested it as an alternative to one of my favourites, Rowan, because DH vetoed, but I've really come to love it. DH also vetoed Ronan. And a million other names I've brought up. With no suggestions of alternatives. He's the worst.

This is going to sound odd, but in that netflix series Hemlock Grove the kids name is Roman. Without looking at the character himself (he's a little crazy) but just hearing the name used in conversation I personally like it. I feel like it's one of those names that needs to be spoken aloud and used conversationally (not a word I know) for it to grow on him.
Rowan is one of my tops runners for a girl but I haven't gotten hubs on the bandwagon The struggle that is men
Thoughts? I brought up Ophelia and hubs instantly popped out "oh I'll feel ya" -_- I don't want to name my kid something that will haunt them and the speed in which he came up with that is scary...he must have been the bully in school
I hate to be that person, but I'm with your H. Last pregnancy, my husband was in love with the name Aurelia and all I could think was some middle school boy would come up to her and say "oh, I'll rail you! " couldn't do it.
Maybe I'll just steal @TattoosandLace DD's name. I love Blakeley!
Go for it, girl! Obviously I'm a little biased but she is seriously the best. We were really blessed with her. She's sassy and spunky but super sweet too.

@afrazer521 I forgot about that character! I think you're right because the more we've talked about it the more we like it, whereas when I first mentioned it I was kind of meh about it (I was just listing off every name I found since DH is so picky).
Side note - that show is so bizarre isn't it? But so good.
I really love the name Madeline for a girl and Oliver for a boy but DH isn't sold on either but we are holding off on the name discussion until we find out the sex. Also @TattoosandLace I love all of those combinations they flow really nicely! @afrazer521 I love the name Finn as well
Mollie Marie, Georgia Lucille, Grayson Michael, Jaxon Guard. That's the plan anyway.
I love Georgia! That's high up on my girls list so far. Girl names are hard because there are so many and I love a lot of them haha. I'll never narrow it down! My husband likes old-timey names like I do so sometimes we agree too much and then we can't decide haha.
Ruth was my paternal gma's name, means friendship, and is shared by some strong famous women.
Mae is a different spelling of May, which is my mom and maternal gma's middle name, and is a nickname for Margaret, which is DH's mom's name. Mae is also a name shared by some cool artistic women. I may go May. Haven't decided which way I'm leaning really. (Also, we are both Norwegian and May is used in Norway, which is cool.)
And our last name is RIDICULOUSLY long and difficult to pronounce (starts with C and is very Polish) so I want something shorter and easy to pronounce up front.
@rakel88 On the Soley pronunciation - I would have said SOL-ee. Stupid, yes, after reading other possible pronunciations. But something to be prepared for.
@LinzerBinzer yeaa, we're prepared for mispronounciation no matter what. It's annoying but I've dealt with it for 13 years living in the states and it's manageable. Also, we'll probably move to Iceland in the next few years so it won't be an issue there
I don't know how much of a concern this is to other people, but teaching our boy how to spell his name for pre-k was such a handful that we are looking at very short names for this one. A girl would be Eva. A boy would be Declan. (Longer than I'd like but I just love the name.)
Our last name is also four letters long, so we anticipate this making life much easier.
Our last name is difficult to pronounce and easy to make inappropriate (like, inevitable), so I definitely want the baby's first and middle name to be totally innocuous.
H and I have not been able to agree on any names, except for a boy first name because he knows how important it is for me to name my child after my dad-Luis. I like Luis Tracy (family maiden name) but he's not sold because Tracy is too "feminine". If we have a girl I would love for there to be a "lu" sound in there somewhere but our friends/family already have a: lumen, Luna, Lucia, Giuliana. I'm not a big fan of Lucy and h doesn't like Lucille, but I do like Luisa, h doesn't. Any other ideas? I brought up lulamae (breakfast at tiffanys) but h looked at me like I had 3 heads.
DobbysSock If we were having a girl, we were naming her Rowan. I told DH, that is what it was going to be, kind of cracks me up he picked Ronan, when it sounds so similar to what the girls name was going to be. My DH did the same thing, nixed names with no input. I told him make his own list, and I'll let him know what I think and/or like. If he didn't give me anything I wasn't going to let him have an input.
Other top boy's names for us would have been: Cullen, Arlo, Malcolm, and Seamus. Girls: Rowan, Amelia, Tallulah, or Hadley.
@MotherOfDucks I love Galen! I've actually thought about it myself, but it's a little too close to my brother's middle name for my comfort.
What do ya'll think of Guinevere? DH isn't really on board.. Yet. I love the idea of Gwen as a NN, but am curious what people would think before meeting her and just knowing her name. Still no luck for any boy names that I love. I really need to invest in a name book.

@DobbysSock You too! You even have the 'h' - you're my homegirl!
And your names sound very much in my wheelhouse! Isla was definitely on our list for #1. I think you should go for it! I don't know if DH liked it back then or what happened with it. And I mentioned Vivienne to him this time, and he didn't immediately veto but not sure how he actually felt about it.
Along with Vivienne, I was thinking about Layla. I think it's kind of similar to where you're going with the Isla sound. Both match well with Norah! Only thing is, Layla was #29 in 2014, and I'm worried it'll be higher in 2015. But I've really never heard of kids in my area with that name, so I don't think it's as popular here...
@thebigoaktree tallulah has always been a favorite of mine! Dh hates it though.
Dd is Arabella, so we definitely like more uncommon names. Kennedy was our second choice for dd so not sure if we will throw that back in the mix this time around or not. We had such a hard time naming dd, I'm not looking forward to naming this lo!
Dh's favorite boy name is Paxton.
We won't talk names until we know the sex and won't decide most likely until baby is here.
@MotherOfDucks I love Galen! I've actually thought about it myself, but it's a little too close to my brother's middle name for my comfort.

I had a friend in college named Gwendolyn that went by Gwen. She was awesome.
Also, not sure if anyone else has the tinder for baby names app. You and your Partner download it and sync it and then only names you both like appear in the favorites section. Kind of handy. It's called Baby Names and has an egg for a logo

@thebigoaktree My kid's name is Ronin. We pronounce it just like the Irish version. He's almost 5 and I still think it's the perfect name for him. Just be forewarned that no matter how you spell it, someone will inevitably call your son "RON-UN"..and it will bother the fuck out of you.
@dolewhipper I've been moderately obsessed with Lilou (French version of Lily pronounced Lee-loo).
Others on our list are: Boys: Julian (Jules), Finn, Max, Felix. I love Milo, Theo, and Louie but DH not so much. He likes Rex but all I can think of is Empire Records and Rex Manning. Girls: Dorothea (family name, Dot or Thea for short), Hattie, Violet, Tansy, Iris, Calla, Rosalie. I just realized that the last five are flowers, six if you add Lilou.
